Responsibility, spontaneity and liberty

Isaiah Berlin maintains that there are two distinct forms of freedom or liberty: negative and positive. Berlin’s principal claim is that negative liberty does not require that the self be somehow separate from the empirical world (causally aloof, or an originator of causal chains). My principal claim is that to be an agent is to be committed to a separation of self in this sense, thus that the self for its very being requires to possess a species of positive liberty. This conception proceeds in part from Immanuel Kant’s claim that there is a separation between spontaneity and receptivity. Commitment to this assertion allows there to be an understood distinction between the self as a spontaneous self-active agent that makes choices, and the self as a mere reactionary brute that does what it does by biological imperatives. In this thesis, I defend the view that negative liberty is subsumed under positive liberty: you cannot have the former without the latter. I am therefore taking a rationalist stance towards Berlin’s thinking. My methodology is to bring into consideration two perspectives upon the underlying normative principles within the space of reason. The first is of Kant’s understanding of the principle of responsibility and the activity of spontaneity; the second is John McDowell’s understanding of that principle and activity. The key claim of this thesis is that Berlin misunderstands what it is to be a chooser. To be a chooser is to be raised under the idea that one is an efficient cause; human children are brought up being held responsible for their reasons for acting. This principle allows mere animal being to be raised into the space of reason, where we live out a second nature in terms of reason. Using their conclusions I further investigate Berlin’s understanding of conceptual frameworks, taking particular interest in historic ‘universal’ conceptions that shape human lives. He too finds that that we are choosers is necessary for what it is to be human. I take his conclusion, and suggest that if he had had a clear understanding of the space of reason, the historic claim that we have choice would find a more solid footing in the principle of that space, in that we are responsible for our actions. I conclude that the upshot of understanding the ‘I’ as an originating efficient cause is that we treat ourselves as free from a universal determinism that Berlin himself disparages; and that the cost to Berlin is that all choice is necessarily the activity of a higher choosing self. It is part of a Liberal society’s valuing, by their societal commitment to, the ideology of raising our children to understand themselves as choosers, that we have choice at all. This is irrespective of whether that which fetters choice is internal or external to the agent, or of whether having self-conscious itself requires such a cultural emergence of second nature.

Att främja reflektion och samarbete : En essä om facilitatorns yrkeskunnande

Den här uppsatsen handlar om facilitatorns roll och yrkeskunnande. En roll som är relativt ny och för de flesta fortfarande helt obekant. Facilitatorn anlitas för att underlätta för grupper att föra samtal och dialog, men också för att gemensamt reflektera. Viktiga förutsättningar för att hitta formerna för fruktbara samarbeten, vilket står högt på många organisationers agendor idag.   I uppsatsen redogör jag inledningsvis för den möteskultur som råder inom organisationer idag. En kultur där medarbetare och chefer avsätter mycket tid i möten som vare sig ger dem själva, organisationen eller samhället något av värde. Det är många gånger envägskommunikation eller förmedling av information. I en tidsanda som ställer höga krav på rationaliseringar och effektivseringar har det dessvärre också blivit så, att tiden för samtal och genuina dialoger succesivt har reducerats till förmån för ökad kommunikation i olika digitala kanaler, inte misnt e-mail och sociala medier. Jag vill hävda att vi människor behöver träffas och samtala för att nå en gemensam och fördjupad förståelse för varandra och våra olika sakfrågor. Vad händer på sikt om vi inte ges möjlighet till gemensam reflektion? Hur ska vi kunna samarbeta om vi inte lär känna varandra och de förutsättningar som råder?   I inledningen redogör jag även för delar av den kunskapsteori som finns kopplat till ämnesområdet yrkeskunnande och teknologi, men också för min mission – att återerövra samtalet som en viktig arbetsmetod. Uppsatsen är skriven i essäistisk stil och det empiriska materialet kommer från de texter jag själv har författat under masterutbildnignens två år då dialogseminariemetoden tillämpats, men också från den dialogseminarieserie som jag själv har genomfört med sex andra facilitatorskollegor. Tillsammans har vi börjat utforska vår gemensamma profession och det yrkeskunnande som vi representerar.   Facilitatorns yrkeskunnande är mångfacetterat och svårfångat, men handlar i mångt och mycket om att vara öppen för människors olikheter. Se dem som berikande. Vara krockfrämjande. Bejaka olika perspektiv och infallsvinklar på saker och ting. Inte vara rädd för att konfrontera. Facilitatorn jobbar med olika tempoväxlingar och har en mängd olika metoder och tekniker till sitt förfogande för att möta olika problemställningar. Planerat eller improviserat. Det finns tydliga analogier med teatern, men också med läkar- och läraryrket. Det handlar om att skapa spänningar och väcka känslor hos deltagarna. Och sedan ta hand om och förvalta de känslor som väckts. Som facilitator blir man aldrig fullärd. Alla grupper är olika och varje ny mötessituation bjuder på nya utmaningar.   För mig känns det som att resan mot bättre vetande precis har börjat. I mina texter kan jag skönja en utveckling över tid, men det finns otaliga gator kvar att utforska. Jag är fortsatt nyfiken och jag vet bestämt att jag vil fortsätta att fördjupa mina kunskaper om facilitatorns yrkeskunnande och gärna då med dialogseminariet som fortsatt forskningsmetod. / This thesis explores the role and skills of a professional facilitator. A facilitator is hired to facilitate meetings and other group processes trough dialogue, conversations and active participation, with the purpose of makig reflection and collaboration within and between organisations possible.

Kant a Husserl o transcendentálním charakteru zkušenosti / Kant and Husserl on Transcendental Character of Experience

The aim of the thesis is to examine both Husserl's and Kant's transcendentalism in a way that would avoid the tendency to put the main accent on Husserl, which is an approach common to almost all literature dealing with this topic so far. Since it is for the most part Husserl's own critique of Kant that inspires such ongoing underestimation of Kant in comparison to Husserl, this work focuss on the question of the legitimacy of this critique. The core of the thesis is an original interpretation of Kant's transcendental philosophy which, instead of taking for granted the phenomenological point of view, attempts to describe Kant's philosophical enterprise from its own perspective and in its own right. In its second part, the thesis provides a brief description of how Husserl, starting initially from the position of descriptive psychology, arrives at a transcendental dimension. When so put side by side, it becomes evident that the two transcendental positions are in fact very different. Husserl's critique of Kant then appears as unjustified, even though quite understandable as an attempt to draw back from certain immature motives of his own philosophy.

Facilitating forgiveness: an NLP approach to forgiving is an attempt at uncovering features of the blocks that prevent people to forgive. These blocks to forgiveness can be detected in the real life situations of the six individuals who told me their stories. The inner thoughts, feelings and the subsequent behaviour that prevented them from forgiving others is clearly uncovered in their stories. The facilitation process highlights the features that created the blocks in the past thus preventing forgiveness to occur. The blocks with their accompanying features reveal what needs to be clarified or changed in order to eventually enable the hurt individuals to forgive those who have hurt them. The application of discourse analysis to the stories of hurt highlights the links between the real life stories of the individuals within their contexts with regard to unforgiveness to the research findings of the existing body of knowledge, thereby creating a complexly interwoven comprehensive understanding of the individuals' thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in conjunction with their developmental phases within their socio-cultural contexts. Neuro-linguistic-programming (NLP) is the instrument with which forgiving is facilitated in the six individuals who expressed their conscious desire to forgive, because they were unable to do so on their own. Their emotions had the habit of keeping them in a place in which they were forced to relive the hurtful event as if it were happening in the present. Arresting the process of reliving negative emotions requires a new way of being in this world. The assumption that this can be learnt is based on the results from a previous study, in which forgiveness was uncovered by means of the grounded theory approach as a cognitive process (Von Krosigk, 2000). The results from the previous research in conjunction with the results and insights from this research study are presented in the form of a grounded theory model of forgiveness. / Psychology / D. Foundations for spirituality : a 'hermeneutic of reform' for a church facing crises inspired by St Francis of Assisi

Either relational contact with God is seen to be existentially attainable or God will become increasingly irrelevant to contemporary society. For Church identity and effectiveness as she serves the world, it is vital that God's initiating power can be seen to impact on this world. As response to fourteen symptoms the Church faces as 'crises,' an inclusive hermeneutic seeks fresh categories for a foundational spirituality capable of catalysing reform and transformation. This comprehensive foundational hermeneutic hypothesised is grounded on three foundational categories of experience, relationality and spiritual intuition. Any reception of such transcendence has to occur subjectively ‘in experience.’ Evasive as it is, experience is posited as a foundational category that needs to be rehabilitated through fundamental philosophy and theology, as well as interdisciplinary explorations. It will be shown that the challenges facing the contemporary Church are rooted in lost experience of transcendence. However the entry point experience provides is never to become narcissistically selfreferential but aims to establish a reciprocal relationship in faith. As an overarching category, dynamic relationality will need to be socially transformative. The deep 'God-person' relational mode, as it synthesises both human capacities and spiritual faculties, is experienced interiorly and as such is called spiritual intuition. It is argued that the notion of, and capacity for, intuition has been widely ignored and eroded. It is demonstrated that a 'reasonable intuition' is a more synthetic faculty 'naturally' open to illumination and infusion by the Spirit than an excessive traditional Church reliance on the workings of reason-intellect. Here the witness of the life of St Francis of Assisi allows simpler and accessible entry into the categories of affective experience and spiritual intuition under overarching relationality. Francis as model, when compared to other Saints, substantiates the three foundational categories. The conclusion chapter tests the foundational theory as it is applied to the fourteen challenges the Church faces. The results of this study, and its applications, offer a promising, fruitful humble metaphysic as 'solution' for the ‘Church in the world’ much in line with Pope Francis' recent approaches. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. A estruturação e a concepção de situações didáticas de ensino envolvendo situações-problema diferenciadas, entretanto, com respeito aos rituais algorítmicos identificados nos livros didáticos de CVV, foram atingidos com base numa visão de complementaridade entre a Teoria das Representações Semióticas e as categorias do raciocínio intuitivo descrita por Fischbein (1987), exploradas nas quatro fases previstas pela Sequência Fedathi. Assim, iniciamos o trabalho com o levantamento e compreensão do ensino e da aprendizagem do Cálculo em Uma Variável Real – CUV e dos poucos estudos científicos desenvolvidos, tanto no Brasil como no Exterior acerca do ensino do CVV. Damos ênfase final à descrição da transição interna do CUV para o CVV, o que não se observa em estudos acadêmicos. Em seguida, com a intenção de delinear, caracterizar, discutir e compreender a natureza do principal raciocínio que tencionamos registrar, discutimos a natureza epistemológica, filosófica e psicológica do raciocínio intuitivo, suas categorias (intuição afirmativa, intuição conjectural e intuição antecipatória) e outras faculdades psíquicas vinculadas a este, nomeadas por percepção e insight. Depois de caracterizar um ensino de CVV apoiado na crença e na certeza matemática, apresentamos e discutimos os principais elementos da Sequência Fedathi e das teorias propostas por Fischbein (1987) e Duval (1991; 1995a). Em seguida, no que diz respeito ao desenvolvimento da pesquisa e a investigação de campo, com arrimo no viés de complementaridade destas teorias, analisamos obras didáticas reconhecidas de CVV, que servem como referência de estudo, com a intenção de identificar e superar possíveis entraves no tocante à elaboração das atividades aplicadas aos estudantes. Os dados empíricos foram obtidos por meio de documentos produzidos por um grupo de oito estudantes escolhidos em uma amostra total de 80 alunos do curso de Licenciatura em Matemática do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia – IFCE – Fortaleza, no período de 2009/2010, matriculados na disciplina Cálculo III, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas efetuadas durante e após as atividades, de modo individual e com o registro visual do momento em que desenvolveram suas estratégias. Todavia, para efeito de discussão no corpo da tese, apresentamos apenas oito estudantes. No final deste estudo, podemos dizer que a exploração didática de categorias do raciocínio intuitivo (intuição afirmativa, intuição conjectural e intuição antecipatória), com base em uma mediação didática que envolveu a exploração de registros de representação semiótica, pode proporcionar a evolução do conhecimento do estudante a respeito dos conceitos principais do CVV. Para tanto, o apoio computacional, com o emprego de softwares como o Geogebra e do CAS Maple, pode indicar elementos mais significativos no que diz respeito à transição interna do CUV para o CVV. Outro ponto relevante concerne à importância do estímulo à elaboração de imagens mentais produzidas pelo ensino que estimula a intuição matemática, a produção de metáforas e a apreensão perceptual dos objetos em 3D do CVV e, deste modo, a evolução de crenças e valores epistêmicos não contraditórios relativos às propriedades formais do CVV.

Dennettova kritika kválií / Dennett's Criticism of Qualia

Topic of this thesis is Dennett's criticism of the philosophical notion of qualia. First, the notion of qualia and the meaning it acquires within philosophy are introduced. Then, four thought experiments are presented to serve as an argument in favor of existence of qualia along with Dennett's reaction to these thought experiments. After that, Dennett's criticism of qualia as immediately apprehensible, ineffable, intrinsic and private properties of conscious mental states is introduced while one of the most common objections to this criticism is emphasized - Dennett's conception of qualia is too narrow and we can preserve it in a moderate way. Subsequently, the thesis outlines such a modest concept - the concept of phenomenal consciousness. This thesis attempts to show that there is no place for phenomenal consciousness in Dennett's heterophenomenology and Multiple Drafts model and that Dennett is as skeptical about this term as he is about the notion of qualia. In the end, the thesis asks the question whether it is really necessary to give up the concept of phenomenal consciousness if we want to study consciousness scientifically - from the third-person point of view.

Polyphibianism : evolving transdisciplinarity into an imaginary organism of living knowledge

Transdisciplinarity emerged from the urge to grasp the elusive knowledge in the most fertile zone in between and beyond disciplines that escapes even the most elaborate interdisciplinary operations. While interdisciplinary protocol enables experts to operate within foreign disciplines, in the extreme case as diverse as art and science (by inviting artists into scientific departments and vice versa), the production of knowledge remains confined to particular domains. To transcend these confinements and access the knowledge that evades institutionalisation Basarab Nicolescu’s Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity sets up conditions for an open structure to be grown outside the current compartmentalisation into a living knowledge. This thesis imagines a possible evolution of transdisciplinarity into knowledge to be lived internally rather than learnt externally in order to overcome the anxiety in transcending the established culture of disciplinary research. By entering the transdisciplinary zone, the identity of experts-specialists dissolves, even the crudest separation into artists and scientists becomes obsolete. From the illusion of losing control over knowledge arises the fear of a return to archaic, mystic or even shamanic ways of knowing. Far from proposing a return to shamanism in its ancient forms this thesis imagines the way of polyphibianism – an imaginary solution to navigate efficiently the protoplasmic state of knowledge that would be indigenous to culture of disciplinary researchers. With every significant discovery the disciplinary researchers already intuitively trespass into the very zone that the Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity invites them to enter intentionally. From examination of documented introspective inquiries into their act of discovery the thesis infers the necessary sensibilities and adaptabilities of the individuals to cross the borders of their disciplines. Their seemingly lost identity is temporarily restored with the term polyphibian (analogous to amphibian) designating their ability to survive and explore multiple environments. With each change of circumstances in research a polyphibian adapts by swiftly reinventing its instinctive instruments, mutating its organs of knowing, indifferently to conventional habits of thought. Through their introspective writings this thesis investigates the polyphibic aptitude of Henri Poincaré, Henri Bergson and Marcel Duchamp to scout at the periphery of physics, metaphysics and ‘pataphysics, to intuitively anticipate the role of chance, chaos and complexity in both arts and sciences. A threshold of complexity has to be surpassed in order to bring the current apparatus of knowledge to life. Bergson’s insight on laughter and dreams suggests how intellect could transcend itself. The thesis proposes to consider laughter as faculty that could induce self-awareness in the intellectual apparatus while dreams are considered to facilitate self-organisation of intellect on higher orders of awareness. In Deleuzian manner of mutating Bergson’s work into Bergsonism, polyphibianism is a mutation in transcribing the code of Creative Evolution where Bergson insisted on interdependency between the theory of knowledge and the theory of evolution. The scholarly dispute on Bergsonian and anti-Bergsonian tendencies present in Marcel Duchamp’s work is revisited in the thesis by interpreting the higher dimensional Bride as a polyphibic organism of living knowledge with access to higher orders of awareness, able to guide the Bachelor’s apparatus of mechanical production and preservation of knowledge out of its predicament. Informed by peculiar Duchampian experiments that challenged both the domain of art and science the research projects in this thesis consist of an intervention at CERN that tested the impenetrability of institutionalised art-science collaborations and installation of the Interval of Suspended Judgement with high mathematical precision at the threshold between physics and ‘pataphysics. With these projects the problems of categorising researchers into artists and scientists are revealed. As Deleuze suggested, to effectively formulate the problem, to realize it in multiplicity of contexts, a new concept must be invented, a new organism must be conceived. This thesis gave birth to an imaginary organism of living knowledge in order to relieve the unnecessary anxieties and to fully engage in transdisciplinary research.
