Intuitive and Analytic Decision Making in Employee Selection Process : Intuitive Decision

Said, Tara January 2019 (has links)
This experimental study aimed to investigate intuitive and analytic decision making approach when assessing job applicants during employee selection process, and feedback related to employee selection process. Theories used in the study to explain intuition are the dual process model and the recognition model. The population was recruiters and non-recruiters. A sample of 169 participants were included. Recruiters’ and non-recruiters’ were randomly assigned into two conditions: use of intuition or analytic thinking as assessment strategy when assessing eight real job applicants. A comparison between their decision making approaches was made. Based on previous research, three hypotheses were obtained and tested. The first hypothesis was that intuitive decision making approach, in combination of experience of employee selections, will enhance assessments of the job applicants. The second hypothesis was that there is a positive relationship between feedback related to employee selection and accuracy in assessing job applicants. The third hypothesis was that there is a positive relationship between participants’ guessed cognitive ability test scores of the job applicants, with employability of the job applicants. The last hypothesis was supported, there was a significant and strong positive relationship between the two variables for all eight job applicants. Significant and non-significant results, methodological influences and theories accounted for are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight and understand the aesthetic experience as a gateway to knowledge of the Will in Schopenhauer's philosophy. The aesthetic experience, which is a way of perceiving the exterior things by pure contemplation, regardless the principle of reason (time, space, and causality), allows us to achieve a high degree of awareness to which, at such state, not only do we know the phenomenon, but, above all, the image of the Will, the essence of all the things, in a clearer way as they are Ideas, and in degrees. It is some sort of knowledge devoid of reason and everything that involves causal relationships and affirmation of the Will of life, which causes pain and blurs our knowledge. This contemplation is made in a very special way by the artist who has the genius, whose faculty of knowledge allows us to access the inner essence of the things. In this perspective of knowledge, there is a great deal of knowledge sharing following the principle of reason to another route, by which one can search based on the notion of the body (Will drive) and the notion of feeling (Beauty, Sublime, and Fantasy). The art work produced by a genius has, as its origin, the apprehension of ideas intuited in nature and, as its end, the communication of those ideas. Such way of knowledge is considered privileged by both the degree of clairvoyance achieved and the possibility to be spread in a variety of art works.

It happens as a narrowing of our range of vision which imposes a limit to our actions, as well as to our expectations. We depict the world in our conscience, but only that specific part which is coherent to our concepts, and also only what we can translate through language. From that on, our actions will be always based on the same concepts already solidified in the past, and will always be described by language. This will only bring us repetitions. Choosing Intuition as the way to keep contact with reality, Bergson searches for removing the obstacles which Intelligence has introduced only for the sake of calculations, measurements and predictions, which have become a filter to reality. When we remove the symbolic intervention, we will have a more complete view of the world that surrounds us, and also a truly open field for our actions. If, for Bergson, the concept of Duration is a more trustworthy way to translate reality than the concept of Time, it is not less true for him that the past consubstantiates the present in an inseparable interpenetration which turns into a unique and singular present. Also, more than just another distinct element in the conceptual web, the future is not there to be revealed, but to be started, to be created, filled with something unexpected, not only as some clay modeled by our past experiences, but as a blank screen ready to receive creative strokes by us, the artists / Ao escavar por debaixo da idéia que em geral temos sobre o tempo, Bergson encontra o peculiar modo de funcionamento de nossa inteligência, bem como descobre que esse funcionamento exerce profunda interferência sobre nossa visão do mundo.

Barn kommunicerar om film / Children communicate about film

Bolin, Ellinor January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to obtain greater understanding of how children relate to the film medium and their experiences. This is obtained by listening to the children and observing their verbal and nonverbal communication in two focus group interviews. Children’s access to and selection of film are due to adult’s restrictions. Science has focused on the side effects that come along when children are exposed to violent action films. As a theoretical starting point, I used communication theory and Argyle’s (1972) non verbal codes to interpret the children’s body language. The empirical results are linked to earlier research and analysed according to four different themes, all connected to the nonverbal codes. The children like the strong feelings that come along with their experiences; still they want to understand the plot in the films. They explain to each other when they can connect to their own experiences and seek for support when needed. They express mixed feelings when it comes to downloading from the Internet because it is illegal, yet they are excited over the fact that it takes a short time and they appreciate to have access. Watching film gives a different kind of understanding compared to reading, since more senses are involved. The children don’t believe producers will make more films suited to children’s wants and needs in the future. / Uppsatsnivå: D

It discusses the transformation of the relationship between intuition and concept in the philosophy of mathematics occurred in the early nineteenth century, when the nature of mathematical knowledge has undergone such profound changes that mathematics came to be called Pure Mathematics, a subject that is relevant to understand the contradiction between simplicity and clarity sought by the creators of Pure Mathematics to make it a language, and the difficulty and lack of meaning with which it is often seen in schools. The way of conceiving knowledge was profoundly changed by this transformation, and in particular changed the meaning of intuition. Kant's work has been discussed in this thesis due to the constructive role that the philosopher attributed, in its critical period, to the intuition of the knower subject; with the work of Kant, a genetic issue, about the origins and the conditions in which knowledge occurs, was inaugurated in philosophy, whence derives the importance that gained in its system the subject's ability to perceive objects through the notions of space and time, as conditions for any knowledge. Kant concludes that what makes knowledge possible is the fact that for its development contributes the subject‘s intuition and constructive action, and that this is how he achieves the concept, general representation, based on intuition, particular representation. Bolzano sought to eliminate from the investigations on the theory of science the study of the conditions and origins of knowledge, which he considered as a social issue that should be written in an order that would allow it to be communicated. Therefore, Bolzano denied that space and time could support language and mathematics, and sought to found principles able to reorganize knowledge in a hierarchical structure in which more conceptual truths could not be substantiated by more intuitive ones. Although Bolzano has not investigated the learning process itself, the importance he gave to education was so great that in his most important work, the Doctrine of Science, Wissenschaftslehre, he defined science as determined organized knowledge so as to compose a textbook. The philosophical, scientific and cultural consequences of the Industrial Revolution that occurred in the early nineteenth century, were studied in this thesis because it was in the context of its emergence that emerged deep processes, on the one hand, to create a public knowledge through the reorganization of universities, the emergence of large Polytechnics who needed graduate engineers in large scale, proliferation of publications with educational concerns; and, on the other hand, a search for reorganizing knowledge created or arisen in previous centuries in a hierarchical manner according to principles, which led to a search for treating in a theoretical manner the knowledge hitherto seen as a set of isolated truths. The study of the authors treated in the thesis, especially Kant and Bolzano, were made based on their original works, and any recourse to commentators did not substitute a careful reading of their ones.

Andriotti, Fernando Kuhn January 2012 (has links)
It’s undeniably that decision making is something present in the day-to-day of everyone, regardless of the type of activities in which we are involved. As a characteristic of the environment which is very dynamic, demanding rapid responses from executives. As others authors have posted, there is a great difficulty on the part of current models to include all the elements present in decision making, leading people to consider the use of more informal sources, with easier access, among them intuition has an important role. Thus, this study seeks to present evidence for addressing the following research question: how intuition works in the instantaneous decision-making process? The main objective is to understand how executives and managers make use of intuition in this specific type of decision. Making use of a literature that sought elements of decisionmaking as well as intuition in the field of management and psychology, it was possible to establish points of intersection, which allowed the development of an instrument for conducting interviews with some executives of IT. Based on a selection of managers from south of Brazil, we obtained access to presidents and executives, some of whom agreed to participate. After collecting and analyzing data, it was possible to find evidence to suggest that intuition is the more important element of trust of managers. In addition, contributions are made to the concept of intuition in the field of management, and how the elements presented are related to each other to enable intuitive thinking in situations that require an instant response. As a theoretical contribution, can be noted the discussion of the topic intuition, as well as some points of divergence from the literature studied. For managers in general, it appears that despite the ignorance and suspicion, intuition can be a reliable source and that can be worked like any other skill.

Solidão e formação, solidão da formação: Reflexões teóricas sobre a possibilidade desprezada pela psicologia / Solitude and Bildung, solitude of Bildung: theoretic reflections on the possibility disregarded by Psychology

Nascimento, Rafael Baioni do 20 October 2014 (has links)
The main thesis defended here is that the simple association between solitude and suffering is ideological, and can only be supported by a rigid science that doesnt take history into account and is not open to the knowledge produced by art. Based on the critic theory of society, especially the thoughts of T. W. Adorno and his conception of art and rationality, I have analyzed some literature and philosophy authors from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, notably those considered precursors of Romanticism, its representatives or greatly influenced by it. In this journey, I have tried to show how a type of solitude, present in the life of these authors or in their works, as a topic or in the form, has critic elements in relation to the society they lived and we, somehow, still live, and utopic elements important to those interested in the overcome of this society based on exploitation and privilege. This solitude is the solitude of formation (Bildung, in German), a development of the burgeois individualism in which converge subjective independence and mediated sociability: subjective independence made possible through financial independence of liberal capitalisms ideal individual, and mediated sociability present in the artistic production and reception

Intuition in the Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum: Faculty Attitudes, Practices and Preparation

Epeneter, Beverly Jean 01 January 1998 (has links)
The primary goal of undergraduate nursing programs is to prepare students for nursing practice. Achievement of this goal may be hindered by reliance on the scientific method in nursing education. Nursing practice often requires the ability to make judgments in situations of ambiguity without the benefit of objective data. The ability to rapidly "read" a situation and respond appropriately is critical to safe nursing care. This requires education in the intuitive way of knowing. Intuitive development may be impeded when students are taught to rely on the rational, scientific way of knowing. The end result may be that students are unprepared to meet the demands of nursing practice. Research on intuition in nursing has focused on nursing practice. To date, no study has explored intuition in nursing education. This study provides data on intuition in undergraduate nursing curricula. A descriptive research study was done on faculty members of the National League for Nursing (NLN). An intuition survey was developed and pilot tested on 10 undergraduate nursing faculty. The survey was sent to a random sample of 676 NLN faculty members nationally. A 51% $(N = 330)$ response rate was achieved. The survey included: (a) intuition attitudes, (b) attitudes toward including intuition in the undergraduate nursing curriculum, (c) intuition in the current curricula, (d) practices related to development and teaching of intuition, and (e) preparation for teaching about intuition. The major findings are: (1) Faculty expressed attitudes of value for intuition. (2) Faculty expressed attitudes that support the importance and appropriateness of including intuition but had concerns about including intuition. (3) Intuition is currently included in the undergraduate nursing curriculum on a limited bases. (4) Faculty use many strategies to develop their own intuition and to help students develop intuition. The majority of faculty rate the strategies as effective. (5) A limited number of respondents had preparation to teach about intuition and the majority expressed interest in learning more about intuition. (6) Program type, years in nursing education, and highest degree in nursing made a difference on intuition attitudes.

Sense and Sensibility : Three Components of Moral Sensitivity and Their Underlying Neural Mechanisms

Hedblom, Carolina January 2019 (has links)
A phenomenon explored in the field of the cognitive neuroscience of morality is moral sensitivity, which is a collective name for a subjective experience related to the ability to detect and respond to morally relevant cues in a given social situation. This thesis will review the underlying neural mechanisms of moral sensitivity and three key components: Empathy, moral disgust and moral intuition, also called moral “gut-feeling.” Initially, the thesis provides a basic explanation of what moral sensitivity entails and the primary observations of which brain regions are often associated with moral sensitivity. Studies show that emotion and cognition seem to be essential to the experience of moral sensitivity, which will be further emphasized by reviewing the chosen key components. Research on morality and empathy suggests that the affective and the cognitive components of empathy each are essential to moral sensitivity. The second key component, moral disgust, describes how moral sensitive people react to violations to society by being motivated to keep away from social interactions with poor moral influence. Research on the third key component explains how moral sensitivity can be affected by moral intuitions, here moral “gut-feelings,” depending on the closeness and emotional salience in a given situation.

Vad betyder min novell? : Författaren tolkar sin okända text

Svensson, Morgan January 2010 (has links)

All my short stories have been written in an intuitive way according to which no outline of characters, intrigue or plot was made in advance. A consequence of this process is that not even myself as the author is aware of the meaning of the texts and therefore I too have to interpret the stories. Because of the character of the text, I use an analysis of archetypes according to C. G. Jung’s analytic psychology. In addition to this I also use concepts from hermeneutical and existential phenomenology, represented here by Viktor Frankl, Emmanuel Lévinas, Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricoeur. The Jungian analysis shows that the content in the short story Sjön (The lake) in a high degree is structured in a way that correlates very well with this method. When it comes to the phenomenological thinkers, several of their concepts are applicable in my short story. In the philosophy of Frankl and Heidegger, the concept of conscience is a warning to the individual to take care of his life, which is a possible interpretation of the anxiety of my main character. When it comes to his seeking for the significance of an important earlier event in his life the concept of memory in the discourse of Ricoeur also bring some light to the understanding. Finally, the concept of the Other in Lévinas´ philosophy can explain his longing for a reestablishing of a meaning in his life.
