Isaksson, Maria January 2021 (has links)
The Swedish curriculum emphasizes the importance of pupils’ active learning, influence over the education and communicative skills in language learning. The Storyline approach has since its entry in the educational context in the 1960s, influenced teaching all over the world. The approach emphasizes pupils’ interest, meaning-making processes and creativity and thus agrees well with the content of the Swedish curriculum. This research overview aims to offer insight into how the Storyline approach can affect pupils in an English as a second language context, in different ways. It focuses primarily on how the Storyline approach can promote pupils’ second language acquisition, what impact the story and its characters have on pupils’ motivation and what effects the aesthetics in Storyline have on pupils. It also gives an overview of challenges that pupils and teachers might encounter while working with a Storyline project. The findings of the study indicate that the Storyline approach, through group work and communicative, meaningful tasks, promote pupils’ learning of English. Moreover, the context of the story and the characters seem to enhance pupils’ intrinsic motivation to learn the English language and the aesthetics can make pupil active agents in their learning process and mediate their knowledge. However, the Storyline approach also involves different challenges for both pupils and teachers, such as trying to find a balance between the teacher’s and the pupils’ control, keeping the story and the characters alive throughout the whole project, dealing with lack of time, group work issues and presenting the work in front of other pupils.

Touré, Mamadou 12 1900 (has links)
The increasing difficulty of providing university education in developing West African countries due to lack of access and inadequate facilities, combined with the breakneck development of information and communication technologies (ICT), have given rise to hopes that open and distance learning (ODL) can provide a practical alternative to face-to-face classrooms (OECD, 2006). However, although the literature reports that ICT and the interactivity they provide can foster learning (Karsenti, 2006), the reality of current education systems forces us to admit that not only has the ODL revolution not been fully realized (OECD, 2006), it will happen only when, to cope with transactional distance, which is a major factor in ODL, learners will not be content with simply learning but will learn how to learn, and this will require autonomous skills. Nevertheless, despite decades of interest and research, real learner autonomy is still marginal, and philosophical debates have replaced the quest for practical solutions (Albero, 2003). It was therefore deemed relevant to explore how ODL educators use available solutions, said to foster learner autonomy, such as certain forms of tutoring and group work. The aim was to gain a deeper understanding of how these practices are applied and their role in the failure to develop autonomy. Following the works of Albero (2003), this study organizes the principles of autonomy within a conceptual framework: interrelations between action and development are described, evidencing the importance of providing support to learners. This topological dimension underscores how educational support must take into account the diverse areas where learners can exercise their autonomy, and a temporal dimension highlights the importance of the progressive reduction of support. This study was initiated in 2009 under the ODL program of the 2iE (International Institute for Water and the Environment) at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. It is organized as three articles: the first seeks to identify the conditions for effective ODL as perceived by learners, and evokes the need for autonomous learning; the second attempts to understand, based on interviews with tutors, whether coaching practices conform to autonomous principles; and the third, based on the expressed intentions of the course designers, examines course compliance with autonomous principles. Given the geographic distance between learners and our aim to understand their perceptions of ODL, we adopted a mixed methods approach, using qualitative methods to better understand learners’ perceptions (Karsenti & Savoie-Zajc, 2004) and quantitative methods to account for their isolation. To grasp the educators’ perceptions, we opted to use qualitative description as a more appropriate way to comprehend the social issues involved (Karsenti & Savoie-Zajc, 2004). Of the 170 learners who were emailed a questionnaire, 62 responded. The results appear to confirm that learner autonomy is a condition for successful ODL. Nevertheless, requests by the learners for more support, despite ongoing efforts under the coaching system, efforts recognized by the learners themselves and confirmed by the ten tutors interviewed out of 40 approached at the 2iE, led us to reconsider: there may still be a place for heteronomous learning. The analysis suggested that learners’ dissatisfaction could be explained by the failure to take into account diverse aspects liable to influence learning. In addition, referring to the interviews with the 11 course designers (out of a total of 30), it appeared that, although they were well aware of the need to adapt the courses to the realities of ODL, neither site-specific contents nor flexible structures were included in the course design. The study concludes on the urgent need to cast off traditional face-to-face learning modes and to hire professional educators trained in learner empowerment. And the question arises: will autonomy ever be defined in the literature as a praxis, i.e. a goal in itself, or will it remain a poiesis, whereby autonomy aims for production and loses its purpose once the objective has been obtained?

Da percepção à performance: um estudo do emprego do aplicativo móvel Duolingo no processo de ensino e aprendizagem de alemão como língua estrangeira em contexto universitário / From the perception to performance: a study of use of mobile application Duolingo in the process of teaching and learning German as a foreign language in a university context

Melo, Telma de Macedo 27 February 2019 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the use of mobile application Duolingo in the process of teaching and learning German as a foreign language (FL) in the context of classroom learning at university. At first, the use of a learning App was mapped, as well as learners satisfaction after guided use of the App, their performance and persistence while doing the App tasks along one semester. With such data, an overview was established in order to verify to what extent the Duolingo App is appropriate for German basic level learning. Therefore, the data were collected in three steps. Firstly, a probe was applied to identify users habits and beliefs in learning a FL with mobile Apps. After that, a didactic intervention was made in one German class, and by using Duolingo App for Schools a control group was established to test the App tools. Thus, data were collected through automatic activities reports, which allow for the analysis of learners performance, persistence and autonomy while using the App. Lastly, an evaluation script was applied in order to check the pedagogical usability, which evidenced learners satisfaction and motivation while using the App. It was concluded that Duolingo App is a possible tool to complement the activities in a German classroom, as it helps the vocabulary learning process. This research contributes to elucidating the questions about the usability of mobile Apps such as Duolingo in FL learning, for it presents tools for developing pedagogical usability evaluation. What is more, this research shows the importance of mobile Apps in the German learning process, evidences learners massive interest in using Apps, and points out some relationships between the Apps digital resources and learners beliefs, motivations, and autonomy.

Autonomní učení anglickému jazyku v kontextu české střední odborné školy / Learner Autonomy in English classes at a Czech Secondary Technical School

Minakova, Irina January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation explores the efficacy of the learner autonomy (LA) principles implemented in secondary technical school EFL classes through project-based units incorporated into the conventional four-year language curriculum (2011-2015). This integrated approach remains uncommon in a Czech secondary technical school, even though it suggests a teaching model that enhances ELA and increases communicative competence and motivation among learners. A mixed-method design based on longitudinal four-cycle action research and quasi-experiment approaches was selected (1) to examine the changes in self-regulation and academic achievement development over time; (2) to investigate the efficacy of autonomous projects systematically applied within the assigned treatment group (TG), and (3) to compare the results of the treatment and control groups as to their self-regulation and academic achievement development. For the quantitative strand, a structured Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-A) and a series of academic tests were administered which were consequently analysed through null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST). The instruments employed within the quasi-experiment were focused on the following two major questions: (1) whether there was correlation between self- regulation and academic achievement...

Arumí Ribas, Marta 24 March 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to analyse how a teaching action is integrated into the consecutive interpreting classroom. This teaching action is based on a socio-constructivist approach and attempts to encourage self-regulation processes in learning. The action takes the form of a battery of metacognitive guides designed specifically for developing the skills required for learning consecutive interpreting. Our focus of interest is the study of the move from hetero-regulation to self-regulation through the incorporation of instruments of mediation - the metacognitive guides - designed to develop the skills required for learning consecutive interpreting. Conceptually, the research takes as its main theoretical references learner autonomy and the relationship of this field with socio-cultural theory and the processes of self-regulation. As for methodology, we follow the criteria of ethnographic and ecologial approach to research. One of the important challenges of this kind of research is finding a model of analysis that serves as a basis for studying the data resulting from metacognitive reflection. To do this, we have used a discourse analysis approach. Once the data has been segmented, for the interpretive analysis we have taken into account the following aspects, among others: a) the relationship between the sentences through the markers and connectors; b) the location in time; c) the modalization and the polyphony of voices in the speech. Among the main results obtained, the mediation instruments, ´learner´s diary- and ´metacognitive guide-, prove to be valid forms for verbalizing metacognitive reflection. Also, that self-regulation of learning is developed in a cyclical and dynamic reflection process. In this process, different degrees or levels become clear. Identifying them helps to integrate and work with the metacognitive element in the classroom. And it should make it possible to draw up a learning-to-learn program focused on teaching consecutive interpreting: a program that respects the micro-processes related to the levels of consciousness identified and which, at the same time, should prove useful for teaching purposes.

A study on Learner Motivation by means of Learner Autonomy as Studying Technique in Modern Language Learning

Gehrke, Karina Wiebke January 2022 (has links)
