Mårsell, Maria January 2008 (has links)
This essay is an introduction to the intentions and purposes of the british play writer Sarah Kane (1971-1999). Her own voice is presented both via quotations linked to her work and by an explanation of her connections to the surrealist poet and actor Antonin Artaud. The main focus is on Kane’s second play, Phaedra’s Love, first performed in 1996. The play is analyzed in co-relation to La volonté de savoir, the first volume in Michel Foucault’s trilogy Histoire de la sexualité. The analysis concentrates on how the structures in society control and act in relationship to and in collision with desire. In La volonté de savoir Michel Foucault presents the thesis that there exists a special talk about sex and sexuality. A talk that states that these are repressed issues. Foucault asserts that such a talk originates from several discourses and institutions in society and together they constitute a chain of power. In his analysis Foucault examines why we declare ourselves as oppressed and what consequences that generates. This essay relies heavily on an inquiry of these consequences and its discourses. The theories of Foucault are applied to Phaedra’s Love and explain the scenarios in which the social discourses of power collide and how they try to affect the characters and their desire. Together they make clear, that desire, in the play, is not primarily related to sex and sexuality. It is rather a desire; the object of which is the state of self-governed individuality. A need for an individual space in the discourses of talk. The main characters, Phaedra and Hippolytus, changed attitude concerning talk and silence result in a powerful social reaction. They both riot against a structure which maintains the standard discourses of power and knowledge. The riot is to be read as the final outcome of the society that surrounds them. The social reaction that comes with this exposes that the controlling discourses of power ultimately are based upon, not talk, but violence. Several other aspects are of importance for the analysis and its conclusions even though they are not pointed out in this abstract. The play Phaedra’s Love and Foucault’s theories both operate on numerous levels at the same time, and as a whole, they both present experiences they wish the spectator/reader will reflect upon.

Tryggvason, Asgeir January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to analyze how students are constituted as subjects in local curricula. The theoretical perspective is grounded in Michel Foucault’s notion of governmentality and power/knowledge and his critique of a sovereign subject. From this theoretical perspective I use Foucault’s concept of formation of objects and Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s idea of subject positioning as tools for a discourse analysis. The analyzed documents are local curricula from fourteen Swedish municipalities. The documents are divided in to two equally sized groups based on the political governing in the municipality. The analysis presents five themes by which statements that constitute students as subjects can be categorized. These five themes are; lifelong learning, desire, essential traits, students responsibility and life and health. The differences between local curricula from political right wing and political left wing governed municipalities are rather small, but there can be seen differences in the technologies of liberal governing. The subject that is constituted in local curricula is primarily a self-governing subject who governs it self in relation to a expertise knowledge.

Konstruktionen av Amerika : Om objektsbildning och hur objektet Amerika skapas i två historieböcker för gymnasiet / The construction of America : About formation of objects and how the object America is created in two history textbooks for high school

Tamayo Hokkanen, Roberto January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this essay has been to show how the object America is constructed in two of the most used history books in Swedish high school. The theoretical framework used in this paper is based on the post-structural discourse analysis as presented by Michel Foucault. More specifically can be said that Foucault´s theories about formation of objects have been used as a tool to show how the image of America is constructed in the books. Later this paper also discuses which subject positioning the studied books take, also this inspired by Foucault´s theories. The study is presented with long quotes from the studied material to reach a transparency that enables the reader to see which dictums the conclusions are based on. This also makes it easy for the reader to judge whether or not the conclusions are reasonable. Two central themes has been located and focused on: 1) The arrival of the Europeans and their conquest of America and 2) the emancipation from Europe. With its focus on America this essay has been able to reveal that America gets its meaning through the Europeans which due to the theoretical framework means that America doesn´t exist without being contrasted with the European civilization. The essay has also shown that the linguistic category “America” embodies different significance in different parts of the books. At first America is generally described as a continent without history that gets invaded by Europeans and the linguistic category refers to current Latin America. This changes however and later the linguistic category “America” refers to the current United States and gets associated with terms such as freedom.

Sindhia : En queerteoretisk diskursanalys

Ghoce, Monique January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to explore the female experience as it is spoken of in the novel Sindhia written by Rut Hillarp (1954) and how the main character in the book violates the experience from a queer perspective. My aim is to through a close reading highlight a number of discourses that underpin the book's imminent theme of love and submission. According to Norman Faircloughs critical-discourse analysis, the text one reads produces a certain amount of discourses that one consumes. This way there is a dialectical interaction that can be set into a practical analysis together with a suitable academic perspective. This is the method I use in this thesis. The academic perspective I add isJudith Butler's queer theoriessupported by Michel Foucaults social genealogyin order to understand/analyze the woman’s position in relation to a social empirical history. I came to the conclusion that Sindhia produces the woman's discourse from an ancient biblical/ mythological time up to modern time. It brings forth untold perspectives that disclose the social hierarchies and women's rebellion against them, a rebellion that has been silenced. The text simply transcends the myths and highlights what has been made invisible, it brings new perspectives to the discourse about women. This shows that the ancient stories that have submissioned the position of women also carry subversive possibilities.

Skapandets rätt : ett kulturvetenskapligt perspektiv på den svenska upphovsrättens historia / The Rights of Creativity : Swedish Copyright History in a Cultural Context

Fredriksson, Martin January 2010 (has links)
The Rights of Creativity is a study of Swedish copyright history from the birth of Sweden’s first copyright legislation in the early 19th century to the passing of the current law in 1960. As the title suggests, the law is regarded as part of a wider cultural context and the dissertation moves beyond the borders of legal history and analyses the law in relation to the history of literature, film, television and other media that partly reflect and partly intersect with the legislative process. The main object of the study is to see how the author is constructed in legal and cultural discourses during the 19th and 20th century. The dissertation focuses on three Swedish copyright laws from 1877, 1919 and 1960, but these laws and their preambles are also related to a few contemporary cultural intertexts, namely: August Strindberg’s novel Röda rummet [The Red Room] from 1879; the director Mauritz Stiller’s films Gunnar Hedes Saga [The Blizzard] and Gösta Berlings saga [The Saga of Gösta Berling] from 1923 and 1924, and finally the television shows Hylands hörna and Skäggen from 1962 and 1963. Apart from this it also pays some attention to the Freedom of the Press Act from 1810 that came to include Sweden’s first copyright statement, as well as to the development after 1960. Eventually it aims to show how the historical legacy has affected the copyright legislation and debates of today.

Big Brother is Watching You: Panoptic Control in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four / Storebror ser Dig: Panoptic kontroll i George Orwells 1984.

Padden, Michaela January 2014 (has links)
George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, first published in 1949, is a vision of socialism gone wrong. The setting of Oceania is a world ruled over by an oligarchical collective, “The Party,” which wields absolute power through a formidable combination of surveillance technology and the operation of the principles of “panoptic control,” a concept drawn from Jeremy Bentham’s model prison design of the late 1700s and revived by Foucault in the mid 1970s. The combination of surveillance technology and panoptic control is central to the functioning of power in Orwell’s novel, a union which has created a self-sustaining form of totalitarianism dependent on the oppression of individual identity for its automatic perpetuation. This essay offers a reading of Nineteen Eighty-Four as an implicit critique of Bentham’s Panopticon which in many ways foreshadowed the later work of Michel Foucault on the functioning of power within this specific type of physical and social architecture.

Madness and Antipsychiatry in the Novel from 1960 to 1980

Weeber, Jeanne 04 June 2016 (has links)
In the early sixties, the theme of madness suddenly became a prominent subject in both social sciences and litterature. Whether as discursive pratice or philosophical and social issue, there was considerable divergence in and around the anti-psychiatric mouvement. A comparative study of a body of litterature composed of nine novels by French, American, English, Dominican, New-zealander, Moroccan and Portughese writers allows a broad and contextualized comprehension of the various treatements of anti-psychiatry in contemporary litterature. Thus, Faces in the Water by Janet Frame and The Ha-Ha by Jennifer Dawson (1961), One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey (1962), The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (1963), Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein by Marguerite Duras and Le Locataire chimérique by Roland Topor (1964), Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (1966), Moha le fou, Moha le sage by Tahar Ben Jelloun (1978) and Conhecimento do Inferno by Antonio Lobo Antunes (1980) are analized from the point of view of psychiatry researches (Szasz, Cooper, Laing...) sociological (Goffmann, Anderson...) and philosophical reflection (Foucault, Derrida, Baudrillard...) in order to trace the outline of what that historical moment called 'madness'. Punctual obsessions and traditional definitions converge in these works to create a poetic of runaway, moreover, an aesthetics of escape.

For my argumentation and analysis I take as a base a specific part of his thought: the problem of domination in modern societies in the genealogic texts in the decade of 1970. It s about to identify how Foucault does his analysis of the relations of domination and the use of the power with the objective to suggest and point out his contribution to sociological analysis of domination. I will discuss the foucaultian program of the study of domination from four units of analysis: person constitution, knowledge, power and truth. The structure and division of the chapters will follow the specific and detailed study of each of those units of analysis, prioritizing their theoretical sense and consequences to the sociology. Thus, in the first chapter, I will highlight a little more the relations of affinity and the convergences between Foucault and the sociology in a way to offer more elements to justify the general objectives that this work intends to achieve. In the second chapter, I will analyze the subject of domination in Foucault s thought, discussing his basic presuppositions and its intrinsic relation with the heart of the foucaultian philosophical project, the person constitution. In turn, in the third and fourth chapter, I will discuss the interdependence between knowledge and power as an essential and opaque dimension of the ways of modern domination. In the fifth chapter, I will analyze the relation between domination and the truth discourse production / Nesta disserta??o, nos propomos a realizar uma leitura do pensamento de Michel Foucault que privilegie, em sua obra e esquema te?rico, as rela??es e implica??es te?ricas, conceituais e tem?ticas com a sociologia.
