Remote Sensing Tools for Monitoring Grassland Plant Leaf Traits and Biodiversity

Imran, Hafiz Ali 03 February 2022 (has links)
Grasslands are one of the most important ecosystems on Earth, covering approximately one-third of the Earth’s surface. Grassland biodiversity is important as many services provided by such ecosystems are crucial for the human economy and well-being. Given the importance of grasslands ecosystems, in recent years research has been carried out on the potential to monitor them with novel remote sensing techniques. Improved detectors technology and novel sensors providing fine-scale hyperspectral imagery have been enabling new methods to monitor plant traits (PTs) and biodiversity. The aims of the work were to study different approaches to monitor key grassland PTs such as Leaf Area Index (LAI) and biodiversity-related traits. The thesis consists of 3 parts: 1) Evaluating the performance of remote sensing methods to estimate LAI in grassland ecosystems, 2) Estimating plant biodiversity by using the optical diversity approach in grassland ecosystems, and 3) Investigating the relationship between PTs variability with alpha and beta diversity for the applicability of the optical diversity approach in a subalpine grassland of the Italian Alps To evaluate the performance of remote sensing methods to estimate LAI, temporal and spatial observations of hyperspectral reflectance and LAI were analyzed at a grassland site in Monte Bondone, Italy (IT-MBo). In 2018, ground temporal observations of hyperspectral reflectance and LAI were carried out at a grassland site in Neustift, Austria (AT-NEU). To estimate biodiversity, in 2018 and 2019 a floristics survey was conducted to determine species composition and hyperspectral data were acquired at two grassland sites: IT-MBo and University of Padova’s Experimental Farm, Legnaro, Padua, Italy (IT-PD) respectively. Furthermore, in 2018, biochemistry analysis of the biomass samples collected from the grassland site IT-MBo was carried out to determine the foliar biochemical PTs variability. The results of the thesis demonstrated that the grassland spectral response across different spectral regions (Visible: VIS, red-edge: RE, Near-infrared: NIR) showed to be both site-specific and scale-dependent. In the first part of the thesis, the performance of spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) based on visible, red-edge (RE), and NIR bands alongside SVIs solely based or NIR-shoulder bands (wavelengths 750 - 900 nm) was evaluated. A strong correlation (R2 > 0.8) was observed between grassland LAI and both RE and NIR-shoulder SVIs on a temporal basis, but not on a spatial basis. Using the PROSAIL Radiative Transfer Model (RTM), it was demonstrated that grassland structural heterogeneity strongly affects the ability to retrieve LAI, with high uncertainties due to structural and biochemical PTs co-variation. In the second part, the applicability of the spectral variability hypothesis (SVH) was questioned and highlighted the challenges to use high-resolution hyperspectral images to estimate biodiversity in complex grassland ecosystems. It was reported that the relationship between biodiversity (Shannon, Richness, Simpson, and Evenness) and optical diversity metrics (Coefficient of variation (CV) and Standard deviation (SD)) is not consistent across plant communities. The results of the second part suggested that biodiversity in terms of species richness could be estimated by optical diversity metrics with an R2 = 0.4 at the IT-PD site where the grassland plots were artificially established and are showing a lower structure and complexity from the natural grassland plant communities. On the other hand, in the natural ecosystems at IT-MBo, it was more difficult to estimate biodiversity indices, probably due to structural and biochemical PTs co-variation. The effects of canopy non-vegetative elements (flowers and dead material), shadow pixels, and overexposed pixels on the relationship between optical diversity metrics and biodiversity indices were highlighted. In the third part, we examined the relationship between PTs variability (at both local and community scales, measured by standard deviation and by the Euclidean distances of the biochemical and biophysical PTs respectively) and taxonomic diversity (both α-diversity and β-diversity, measured by Shannon’s index and by Jaccard dissimilarity index of the species, families, and functional groups percent cover respectively) in Monte Bondone, Trentino province, Italy. The results of the study showed that the PTs variability metrics at alpha scale were not correlated with α-diversity. However, the results at the community scale (β-diversity) showed that some of the investigated biochemical and biophysical PTs variations metrics were associated with β-diversity. The SVH approach was also tested to estimate β-diversity and we found that spectral diversity calculated by spectral angular mapper (SAM) showed to be a better proxy of biodiversity in the same ecosystem where the spectral diversity failed to estimate alpha diversity, this leading to the conclusion that the link between functional and species diversity may be an indicator of the applicability of optical sampling methods to estimate biodiversity. The findings of the thesis highlighted that grassland structural heterogeneity strongly affects the ability to retrieve both LAI and biodiversity, with high uncertainties due to structural and biochemical PTs co-variation at complex grassland ecosystems. In this context, the uncertainties of satellite-based products (e.g., LAI) in monitoring grassland canopies characterized by either spatially or temporally varying structure need to be carefully taken into account. The results of the study highlighted that the poor performance of optical diversity proxies in estimating biodiversity in structurally heterogeneous grasslands might be due to the complex relationships between functional diversity and biodiversity, rather than the impossibility to detect functional diversity with spectral proxies.

Gustafsson, Joakim January 2016 (has links)
The research was conducted in order to contribute to the general body of knowledge regarding the prospective transport system GTS Transport System developed by GTS Foundation. This dissertation will explore and further develop the GTS system. This was achieved with the research question: How does the future GTS Transport System look in a user-centered design perspective?   In a design process, a deep and comprehensive research laid the foundation in order to create an understanding of the needs and demands that would need to be fulfilled for the future transport system. The GTS Transport System was carefully studied and analyzed in order to reach a deeper understanding around its visions, ideas and technical solutions. Comparação do perfil de mutagenicidade e da composição química do material particulado atmosférico de Limeira, Estocolmo e Quioto / Comparison of mutagenicity and chemical profile of the atmospheric particulate matter from Limeira, Stockholm and Kyoto

Maselli, Bianca de Souza 11 May 2018 (has links)
Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is associated with various diseases and has recently been classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Although the PM toxicity, including genotoxicity, is known to be related to particle size, the contribution of its chemical composition to the observed effects has not yet been fully elucidated. The size and composition of the particles are influenced by meteorological and climatic characteristics, especially the temperature and the period of solar radiation. The Salmonella/microsome assay is the most used for the evaluate of the mutagenicity of PM samples, however a small number of strains are used. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the influence of the different atmospheric and climatic conditions of the cities of Limeira (Brazil), Stockholm (Sweden) and Kyoto (Japan) on mutagenicity profiles, using 11 strains with different selectivity, and chemical composition profiles of total particles suspended (TPS) composed samples collected during the winter of these cities. For the results to be directly compared, the same methodology was adopted, including the sampling procedure, the sample preparation protocol, the mutagenicity test protocol, and the chemical analysis techniques for the identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their alkylated derivatives. Limeira presented the highest concentration of TPS (99.0 µg/m3), followed by Kyoto (28.0 µg/m3) and Stockholm (6.2 µg/m3). Although the TPS concentration in Limeira was 16-fold higher than in Stockholm and 3.5-fold higher than in Kyoto, the percentage of extracted organic material (EOM) obtained was 9, 15 and 5%, respectively. The extracts from the TPS samples collected in the three cities presented mutagenic activity for all strains, both in the absence and presence of S9, except for TA102 that did not detect the mutagenic activity in any of the extracts, and for YG7108 in the presence of S9, only for the Limeira sample. Despite the differences in meteorological and climatic conditions of these cities, their mutagenicity profiles were similar. The lower mutagenic potency for YG7108 in the absence of S9 and the non-mutagenicity in the presence of S9 reveals the lower contribution of alkylating agents to the mutagenicity of the Limeira sample in relation to the other cities. Considering the selectivity of the strains used, we can also observe a greater contribution of compounds that cause DNA oxidative damage and of alkylating agents for the mutagenicity of the Kyoto sample. However, according to the responses of the strains that have increased activity of the nitroreductase (NR) and/or O-acetyltransferase (OAT) enzymes, YG1021, YG1024 and YG1041, show the highest contribution of nitroarenes and aromatic amines for the mutagenicity of the three cities, with emphasis on those mutagens that depend on OAT activation. The mutagenic potencies expressed as a function of EOM mass (rev./µg EOM) were similar for all samples. When expressed by air volume (rev./m3), the mutagenic potencies were proportional to TPS concentrations of the three cities (Limeira> Kyoto> Stockholm). When applying the diagnostic ratios, it was possible to verify a mixture of sources of pollution in Limeira and Stockholm. The diagnostic ratios of the PAH indicate that Limeira sample is composed of fresh particles with a slight predominance of combustion sources. The Stockholm sample present aged particles with a predominance of petrogenic sources. This result was unexpected, since Limeira\'s atmospheric conditions are more favorable to particle aging than Stockholm\'s. The study of the transport of air masses explains, at least in part, the presence of aged particles in the Stockholm sample. It also suggests that the reduction of PAH concentrations in Limeira depends on the control of local sources, while in Stockholm control of local sources would not be efficient in reducing these pollutants. In parallel to the evaluation of the TPS samples, a new miniaturized protocol of the Salmonella/microsome assay in microsuspension was also developed. The protocol using 12-well microplates was validated by employing thirteen mutagenic compounds tested with three selected Salmonella strains based on their different spontaneous reversion frequencies (low, medium and high). Both the miniaturized microplate agar (MPA) and the microsuspension assay presented similar sensitivities, concluding that MPA is a promising tool and can be particularly suitable for environmental studies such as effect-directed analysis (EDA) or monitoring programs.

Investigating Scale Effects on Analytical Methods of Predicting Peak Wind Loads on Buildings

Moravej, Mohammadtaghi 11 June 2018 (has links)
Large-scale testing of low-rise buildings or components of tall buildings is essential as it provides more representative information about the realistic wind effects than the typical small scale studies, but as the model size increases, relatively less large-scale turbulence in the upcoming flow can be generated. This results in a turbulence power spectrum lacking low-frequency turbulence content. This deficiency is known to have significant effects on the estimated peak wind loads. To overcome these limitations, the method of Partial Turbulence Simulation (PTS) has been developed recently in the FIU Wall of Wind lab to analytically compensate for the effects of the missing low-frequency content of the spectrum. This method requires post-test analysis procedures and is based on the quasi-steady assumptions. The current study was an effort to enhance that technique by investigating the effect of scaling and the range of applicability of the method by considering the limitations risen from the underlying theory, and to simplify the 2DPTS (includes both in-plane components of the turbulence) by proposing a weighted average method. Investigating the effect of Reynolds number on peak aerodynamic pressures was another objective of the study. The results from five tested building models show as the model size was increased, PTS results showed a better agreement with the available field data from TTU building. Although for the smaller models (i.e., 1:100,1:50) almost a full range of turbulence spectrum was present, the highest peaks observed at full-scale were not reproduced, which apparently was because of the Reynolds number effect. The most accurate results were obtained when the PTS was used in the case with highest Reynolds number, which was the1:6 scale model with a less than 5% blockage and a xLum/bm ratio of 0.78. Besides that, the results showed that the weighted average PTS method can be used in lieu of the 2DPTS approach. So to achieve the most accurate results, a large-scale test followed by a PTS peak estimation method deemed to be the desirable approach which also allows the xLum/bm values much smaller than the ASCE recommended numbers.

Delayed neutrons from the neutron irradiation of ²³⁵U

Heinrich, Aaron David 10 October 2008 (has links)
A series of experiments was performed with the Texas A&M University Nuclear Science Center Reactor (NSCR) to verify ²³⁵U delayed neutron emission rates. A custom device was created to accurately measure a sample's pneumatic flight time and the Nuclear Science Center's (NSC's) pneumatic transfer system (PTS) was redesigned to reduce a sample's pneumatic flight time from over 1,600 milliseconds to less than 450 milliseconds. Four saturation irradiations were performed at reactor powers of 100 and 200 kW for 300 seconds and one burst irradiation was performed using a $1.61 pulse producing 19.11 MW-s of energy. Experimental results agreed extremely well with those of Keepin. By comparing the first ten seconds of collected data, the first saturation irradiation deviated ~1.869% with a dead time of 2 microseconds, while the burst irradiation deviated ~0.303% with a dead time of 5 microseconds. Saturation irradiations one, three and four were normalized to the initial count rate of saturation irradiation two to determine the system reproducibility, and deviated ~0.449%, ~0.343% and ~0.389%, respectively.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF OFDM IN PAPR REDUCTION USING NEW COMPANDING TRANSFORM AND ADAPTIVE AC EXTENSION ALGORITHM FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORKSPERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF OFDM IN PAPR REDUCTION USING NEW COMPANDING TRANSFORM AND ADAPTIVE AC EXTENSION ALGORITHM FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS

BAIG, CLEMENT RANJITH ANTHIKKAD & IRFAN AHMED January 2013 (has links)
This paper presents a new hybrid PAPR reduction technique for the OFDM signal, which combines a multiple symbol representations method with a signal clipping method. The clipping method is a nonlinear PAPR reduction scheme, where the amplitude of the signal is limited to a given threshold. Considering the fact that the signal must be interpolated before A/D conversion, a variety of clipping methods has been proposed. Some methods suggest the clipping before interpolation, having the disadvantage of the peaks re-growth. Other methods contributed that the clipping after interpolation, having the disadvantage of out-of-band power production. In order to overcome this problem different filtering techniques have been proposed. Filtering can also cause peak re-growth, but less than the clipping before interpolation. Another clipping technique supposes that only subcarriers having the highest phase difference between the original signal and its clipped variant will be changed. This is the case of the partial clipping method. To further reduce the PAPR, the dynamic of the clipped signal can be compressed. Linear methods like partial transmit sequence or selective mapping has been proposed for the reduction of PAPR as well. Another PAPR reduction method is the tone reservation. It uses tones on which no data is sent to reduce the transmitted signal peaks. Derivatives of this method with lower computation complexity and improved performance have been proposed: One-Tone One-Peak and one by-one iteration. A similar PAPR reduction method is the multiple symbol representations, where alternative signalling points are used to represent one symbol. The simulation results highlight the advantages of the proposed PAPR reduction method. / The proposed technique namely Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) Algorithm reduced the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) is equal to 6.8 dB for the target clipping ratios of 4 dB, 2 dB and 0 dB by using Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) Algorithm. Thus, the minimum PAPR can be achieved for low target clipping ratios. The Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal obtained by the Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) algorithm is equal to 1.2 dB at a Bit Error Rate (BER) of 10-0..4 for different constellation orders like 4-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (4-QAM), 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM) and 64-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM). Here, the Bit Error Rate of 10-0.4 or 0.398, that means a total of 398-bits are in error when 1000-bits are transmitted via a communication channel or approximately 4-bits are in error when 10-bits are transmitted via a communication channel, which is high when compared to that of the original Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal. The other problems faced by the Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) algorithm are Out-of-Band Interference (OBI) and peak regrowth. Here, the Out-of-Band Interference (OBI) is a form of noise or an unwanted signal, which is caused when the original Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal is clipped for reducing the peak signals which are outside of the predetermined area and the peak regrowth is obtained after filtering the clipped signal. The peak regrowth results to, increase in the computational time and computational complexity. In this paper, we have proposed a PAPR reduction scheme to improve the bit error rate performance by applying companding transform technique. Hence, 1-1.5 dB reduction in PAPR with this Non-companding technique is achieved. In Future, We can accept to implement the same on Rician and Rayleigh channels.

Fusarium species in grains : dry matter losses, mycotoxin contamination and control strategies using ozone and chemical compounds

Mylona, Kalliopi January 2012 (has links)
This Project identified the relationships between storage conditions, dry matter losses (DMLs) caused by Fusarium species in cereal grains and mycotoxin contamination and assessed novel control strategies for post-harvest grain management including chemical control and ozone. F. graminearum, F. verticillioides and F. langsethiae were inoculated on wheat, maize and oats and stored under environmental conditions where marginal to optimum spoilage and mycotoxin contamination can occur. DMLs were calculated from the CO2 produced and were significantly correlated with deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), fumonisins (FUMs) and T-2 and HT-2 toxins respectively. Mycotoxin levels in wheat and maize exceeded the EU legislative limits with 0.9-1% DMLs. Therefore, CO2 monitoring during storage can indicate the level of contamination in a stored batch. Using CO2 production data at different water activity (aw) and temperature conditions, the environmental regimes at which F. langsethiae can grow and contaminate oats with T-2 and HT-2 toxins were identified for the first time. Five acids were examined in vitro and little effect was observed on Fusarium growth, in the aqueous form, while the effect on mycotoxin production varied. Dissolved in ethanol, adipic, fumaric and ferulic acids inhibited fungal growth and controlled DON and FUMs, but T-2 toxin was stimulated by the ethanol. Two garlic essential oils, propyl-propylthiosulfinate (PTS) and propyl propylthiosulfonate (PTSO) were studied for the first time. In vitro, 200 ppm reduced fungal growth (50-100%) and mycotoxin production by >90%. The efficacy was species-dependent. In naturally contaminated oats of 0.93 aw stored for 20 days, 16 ppm PTSO reduced T-2 and HT-2 toxins by 66% and ochratoxin A (OTA) by 88%, while 200 ppm PTS reduced OTA by 95%. In wheat, 100 ppm PTS reduced DON and ZEA and 300 ppm PTS reduced fumonisins by 40-80%. PTSO:PTS (1:1) at 400 and 600 ppm was very effective against DON and ZEA in wheat of 0.92 aw. Ozone (O3) exposure at 200 ppm for 30 min delayed Fusarium spore germination on media of 0.98 aw and inhibited germination at 0.94 aw. O3 was more effective against fungal spores than mycelium and little effect was observed on growing cultures. In vitro, mycotoxin production after exposure depended on the stage of life of the fungi. O3 reduced fungal populations in grains. Mycotoxin production in wet grains treated with 100-200 ppm O3 for 60 min and stored for up to 30 days was reduced or completely inhibited, depending on the species and the exposure system. Simultaneous drying of the grain due to the O3 passage was observed.

Preventing fatal effects of overworking : Product design solution

Adawi, Rahim January 2018 (has links)
“Overworking to death” is a phenomenon that has been noticeable in developing countries. The cause of death is mainly through ischemic strokes. While the victims’ occupations differed, they all shared a common characteristic, being positioned in a sedentary work, ranging from IT workers to doctors. This project’s aim was to develop a product that prevented or decreased the strokes that derived from sedentary overwork. This was mainly tackled by preventing one of the three causes of developing blood props, slowed blood flow. In order to gather rich data of the phenomenon, a qualitative study was conducted in China, during two months. By doing an extensive structured sampling, information rich data could be gathered during a short period of time. Data were derived from observations, questionnaires and an interview, which then was interpreted to customer needs and the final product specification. The final product became a trouser with an in built dynamic compression mechanic, that can compress the veins mostly during sitting activities, in order to prevent blood stasis. The compression mechanic works like the Chinese finger trap; compressing the calves while sitting and stretching the legs forward. It is made only out of polysaccharides fibres; cotton and corn.
