A synchronic approach to the Serek ha-Yahad (1QS) : from text to social and cultural context

Skarström Hinojosa, Kamilla January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the social and cultural contexts of 1QS (Serek ha-Yahad) by means of a textual study. The analysis of the text is performed in a synchronic perspective. This means that lexical choices, grammatical forms, references, topics, themes, and intertextuality are analyzed text-internally. By doing so, this study sheds new light on old questions of textual cohesion and coherence, questions that until now have been dealt with mostly from a diachronic perspective. The text analysis entails investigation in view of three interrelated dimensions of language function: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. These imply language as transmitting information, creating and sustaining relations, and functioning to organize itself into cohesive units. Although applying some of the terminology from the field of text linguistics (SFL), the focus in this study is on what a text means rather than why. This means that the semantic-pragmatic aspects of language are of foremost interest here. The analysis is performed from bottom and up, then from top down again. Words, phrases, and sentences are investigated up to the broadest linguistic level, namely, to the semantic discourse itself. With an understanding of the larger discourse at hand thanks to this analysis of textual cohesion and coherence, textual details are once again revisited and interpreted anew. In this work, 1QS is analyzed from beginning to end—chronologically, so to say. Then, at the end of each major section, the discourse is analyzed overall. Following the text analysis, conclusions of the investigations are presented. The conclusions argue that the hierarchal structure of the community and its stringent regulations are to be understood as a corrective in response to corrupt society. It is also argued that language in 1QS has a performative function. Rather than describing the way things are, it aspires to evoke the ideal society. Instead of understanding 1QS and the community mirrored in it as a deviant group with little or no contact with the surrounding world, it is then understood as a potent contribution to late Second Temple Jewish discourse concerning how to create a just society and a sanctifying cultic practice. In the final chapter, the insights gained from textual analysis of 1QS are brought into encounter with the theoretical framework posited by French historian and philosopher René Girard (1923–2015). In light of Girard’s philosophy, the hierarchal organization of the community (the Yahad) as well as its regulations can be interpreted as an effort to prevent a mimetic crisis. The function of the scapegoat in 1QS is discussed in light of Girard’s grand theory of the mechanisms of scapegoating in all societies. The study closes with the tentative hypothesis that the community in 1QS deconstructs the scapegoating mechanism by taking the role of the scapegoat upon itself.

Simard, Mathieu 30 April 2019 (has links)

Purwanto, Fransiskus 09 June 2006 (has links)

El bildungsroman en el Caribe hispano / The Bildungsroman in the Spanish Caribbean

Lorenzo Feliciano, Violeta 31 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the bildungsroman genre in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. A close examination of the development of this genre demonstrates that it has ideological implications that link the young protagonists’ development with that of the nation. The authors on whom I focus—Ángela Hernández, Rita Indiana Hernández, René Marqués, Pedro Juan Soto, Magali García Ramis, Severo Sarduy, and Jesús Díaz—do not merely imitate the European model but revise, adapt, and often subvert it thematically and, in some cases, aesthetically. I argue that these bildungsromane differ, for the most part, from the European prototype due to their openly political themes, such as the establishment of the Estado Libre Asociado in Puerto Rico, the 1959 Revolution in Cuba, and, in the case of the Dominican Republic, Trujillo’s dictatorship. I claim that Dominican bildungsromane do not propose national projects or models but rather question the purported homogeneity of identity of the country as a normalized political body. On the other hand, in Cuba and Puerto Rico the genre has been used to promote absolute discourses of nationality as well as political projects that must be questioned due to their discriminatory and sometimes racist and violent nature.

The nature of the marvelous in René Depestre’s Hadriana dans tous mes rêves

Belleroche, Jean Élie, 1968- 26 July 2011 (has links)
My goal is to study the nature of the Marvelous in René Depestre's Hadriana dans tous mes rêves. I want to demonstrate that René Depestre, in his novel, combines a number of surrealist or neo-surrealist premises that have influenced him as a Haitian writer. This goes beyond differences that can be discerned between the "Surrealist marvelous" endorsed by André Breton and the surrealists, and Alejo Capentier's "marvelous real"later proposed by Jacques Stephen Alexis as "marvelous realism" Depestre adapts Haitian natives' perceptions deep-rooted in their historical and social, cultural and religious past and ever-existing political and economical struggle. Taking into account both the surrealist perspective and the Haitian context, I shall address the complexity of the concept of the Marvelous and discuss Depestre's use of "zombification"as a form of metamorphosis, which preserves the mystical nature of Vodou as a religion that syncretizes the Roman Catholic ritual of exorcism of the Christian West and the animist and magical practices inherited from Africa. Scholars have explored the Marvelous and marvelous realism in Depestre's works as a whole, but not in Hadriana dans tous mes rêves specifically. The exclusive nature of this study will show that Depestre draws from Haiti's complex cultural ethos as well as from surrealism'es key principles, to create a hybrid Marvelous typical of Haiti and Depestre'es aesthetic as a writer. / text

Subjetividade, ideias e coisas : estudo crítico e tradução da primeira parte da Lógica de Port-Royal, I-VIII / Subjectivity, ideas and things: a critical study of the first part of the logic of Port-Royal, I-VIII and the translation of the first part

Peixoto, Katarina Ribeiro January 2012 (has links)
Critical study and translation of the First Part of Logic or the Art of Thinking, known as Port- Royal Logic (1683), for the portuguese language. The study is focused on the analysis of chapter I to VIII of the First Part and aims to clarify the hybrid character of this manual of logic, which has the structure of scholastic logic manuals, inspired by the Aristotelian Organon, and the reception and effectiveness of key Cartesian theses. Although the Aristote’s legacy is far more importante than the shaping of the manual structure, the logic of Port-Royal should be read as a manual of modern logic in what conditions its intelligibility: the introduction of epistemic requirements in determining the domain of logic. In the process of reformism in logic started in the fifteenth century, the Port-Royal Logic is inscribed not only in the critic of the conception of syllogistic logic as a tool for the demonstration of science (as, for example, the renaissance has done), but also with the defense of logic as a kind of practical reflection epistemically oriented, characterized by tacking the judgment as the mental action by excellence, which defines the logical domain. The presence of epistemic requirements is derived from the impact of Descarte’s philosophy on Port-Royal and from his debate with Antoine Arnauld. Fundamental thesis of Cartesianism are regimented to the port-royalian conception of logic, as the priority of thought over language, the contempt of language and its origin, imagination, and, conditioning all these, the founder of Cartesianism thesis as stated in the proposition I think, therefore I am. The study argues that interpretation of the Cartesian cogito by Antoine Arnauld, mostly, offers a way to think Cartesianism in logic. The analysis of the first eight chapters is thematic, and the reformist perspective in Port-Royal's Logic is presented to study the transition of the III chapter to the VIII. Then, back up to the defended position, that is the assumption that the conception of subjectivity, of knowledge and the representative expression of this assumption are presented in Chapters I and II of the First Part of the manual. In these chapters are established the requirements of an epistemic logic of ideas and of the representative character of these ideas, which get its grammatical outfit (subject, predicate and adjective), conveying logical determinations (a thing, a manner of a thing and a modified thing). Finally, the study seeks in the correspondence that Descartes maintained with Arnauld, in 1648, the origin and the foundation of the concept of cogito which will be in force in Port-Royal, explicitly, from 1662.
