(137)Cs concentrations in foliose lichens within Tsukuba-city as a reflection of radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident

Ohmura, Y., Matsukura, K., Abe, J.P., Hosaka, K., Tamaoki, M., Dohi, T., Kakishima, M., Seaward, Mark R.D. 03 1900 (has links)
No / (137)Cs concentrations in ten species of foliose lichens collected within Tsukuba-city in August 2013 ranged from 1.7 to 35 kBq/kg. The relationships between (137)Cs in two dominant species, Dirinaria applanata and Physcia orientalis, and the air dose rate (muSv/h) at the sampling sites were investigated. (137)Cs in P. orientalis measured about 1 year after the Fukushima nuclear accident was correlated (r(2) = 0.80) more closely with the air dose rate than those measured after about 2 years (r(2) = 0.65), possibly demonstrating its continued value as a biomonitor to reflect ambient fall-out levels. In contrast, those of Dirinaria applanata were not correlated with the air dose rate in either year.

The impact of background resolution on Target Acquisitions Weapons Software (TAWS) sensor performance

Pearcy, Charles M. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This study evaluated the sensitivity of TAWS detection range calculations to the spatial resolution of scenario backgrounds. Sixteen independent sites were analyzed to determine TAWS background. Multispectral satellite data were processed to different spatial resolutions from 1m to 8km. The resultant imagery was further processed to determine TAWS background type. The TAWS background type was refined to include soil moisture characteristics. Soil moisture analyses were obtained using in situ measurements, the Air Force's Agricultural-Meteorological (AGRMET) model and the Army's Fast All-seasons Soil Strength (FASST) model. The analyzed imagery was compared to the current default 1o latitude by 1o of longitude database in TAWS. The use of the current default TAWS background database was shown to result in TAWS ranges differing from the 1m standard range by 18-23%. The uncertainty was reduced to 5% when background resolution was improved to 8km in rural areas. By contrast, in urban regions the uncertainty was reduced to 14% when spatial resolution was reduced to 30m. These results suggest that the rural and urban designations are important to the definition of a background database. / First Lieutenant, United States Air Force

Understanding Individuals' Learning and Decision Processes in a Changing Environment by Using Panel Data

Ahmad Termida, Nursitihazlin January 2017 (has links)
When a new transport service is introduced, people have to learn and familiarize themselves with the new service before they decide to adopt it. These processes are developed over time, thus produce dynamics in individuals’ behavioural responses towards the service. This affects the demand of the new service, thus affect revenues. Available studies have examined the factors influencing these responses from microeconomic perspectives. The influence of the theory-based subjective factors has not been examined empirically. Understanding these would assist transport and urban planners to design a better marketing strategy to increase the market share of the new service. A change in seasons affect individuals’ activity-travel decisions, thus produce dynamics in activitytravel patterns in different seasons. Individuals’ constraints, in a form of mandatory activities (working/studying), are influencing individuals’ decisions to participate in day-to-day nonmandatory activities (leisure and routine activities). The interdependency between travel demand, time allocation and mode choice that considers interactions between mandatory and non-mandatory activities, in different seasons is less explored. Understanding these would assist transport planners and operators to manage travel demand strategies across different seasons of the year and provide better transportation systems for all individuals. This thesis includes five papers. Paper I explores individuals’ characteristics of the quick-response and the adopters of the new public transport (PT) service and examines the temporal effects. Paper II investigates the subjective factors influencing a quick-response to the new PT service by proposing a modified attitude-behaviour framework. Paper III and IV analyse the effects of seasonal variations and individuals’ constraints on their day-to-day activity-travel decisions and patterns. Paper V analyses the attrition and fatigue in the two-week travel diary panel survey instrument. / <p>QC 20170323</p>

Ardouin, Anne 11 1900 (has links)
«Paysages d’adolescents du Québec, saisons en regards filmiques» chronicles the journey to define the intimate relationship between adolescents and their environment. This study documents the natural and social elements of images filmed over the course of two seasons: fall and winter. Our text thereby contributes to the exploration of adolescents’ environmental values. On one hand, our research finds an oscillation between nature and society in the filmed images. It also shows the home—the platform upon which adolescents’ landscape awareness develops on a smaller scale—as the driving force behind the establishment of roots. The methodology used to achieve these results was drawn from projects in Montérégie and Bas-Saint-Laurent high schools in which adolescents filmed their environment and then evaluated and described the images captured. The analyses of recurring observations and successive themes allowed us to target the many dimensions of the adolescent’s relationship with their landscape.

Koncept čtyř ročních období v českém jazyce / Concept of the four seasons in Czech language

Pevná, Lucie January 2012 (has links)
The diploma thesis explores the four seasons from the view point of the linguistic picture of the world theory. The etholinguistic approach is applied in the thesis - attention is paid to the Czech-specific perception of reality especially focused on the weather and the changes of the nature in the course of the four seasons. Human perception of the change is based upon the senses - the sense of hearing, the sense of smell, and touch and the eyesight. Each season is unique. The seasons can be differentiated by their season specific stereotypes, season prototypes, and connotations. On the linguistic pictures of each season collocations are built, from which new lexical items originate, describing the season as such. Due to anthropocentrism we perceive individual astronomical and meteorological issues as personified items to which we ascribe human behaviour and human qualities. The motto of the thesis says: "I will not do the spring sowing next year. " The motto denotes the interaction of two conceptual schemata (the scheme of a cycle and the scheme of a journey) realizing the fact that the natural cycle corresponds in our mental representation with the phases of human life. The difference between the concepts is that man always reaches the terminal point of his journey unlike the nature constantly...

The social wasps are widely distributed around the continent. In the urban environment has been observed the nesting of some social wasps species and their socialization with the human presence, for exemple the specie Mischocyttarus cassununga. The objectives of this study were to verify the occurrence of social wasps in urban gardens during the hot, humid, cold and dry and evaluate their aggression, and colonies defensive behavior development of M. cassununga, about turmoil in nests and of ants attacks simutalions, in the Juiz de Fora municipality , Minas Gerais. To check the occurrence of social wasps in urban gardens, the study was conducted during one year in seven urban gardens, making six surveys at each station. During the hot and humid 145 colonies were found: Protopolybia exigua (n=81), Polybia platycephala (n=40) and Mischocyttarus cassununga (n=24). In the cold season and dry 87 colonies were found: P. exigua (n=47), P. platycephala (n=29) and M. cassununga (n=11). In the hot and humid the density was higher in all species. In two seasons "the" dominance index for colonies of P. exigua (d=0.55) was superior compared to other species found (d=0.30 for P. platycephala and d=0.15 for M. cassununga). All colonies nesting in vegetation: Livistonia chinensis (n=161) and Dracaena fragans (n=71). The number of colonies found showed a strong positive correlation with the size of green tree (r=0.9643, p=0.0005) and with the size of nesting green area (r=0.8571, p=0.0137), as well as the total area size of urban gardens (r=0.9286, p=0.0025). The height colonies from the ground ranged from two tand four meters more. The species that was between two and four meters in height was significantly higher (χ²=21.930; p<0.0001) than those found in other colonies heights. To evaluate the defense of M. cassununga specie, the study was conducted between April and July 2011 on the campus of University Juiz de Fora, using seven control colonies and seven treatment colonies. The colonies were mapped and during 18 days the treatment colonies were disturbed by a agitated restless ball of red. It was later made a mock attack against all ant colonies (control and treatment). The results showed during the disturbance with the ball the colonies had more aggressive in the beginning and possibly have accustomed to the ballduring the perturbation. During the attack simulation by ants, there was no significant difference (z=0.133, p=0.895) in the behavior frequency between control and treatment colonies. The immature development also showed no significant difference for eggs (z=1.351, p=0.177), larvae (z=1.293, p=0.196) and pupas (z=0.925, p=0.355) between control colonies and treatment colonies. However, there was a significant difference (z=2.300, p=0.021) in disappearance of eggs between the control and treatment colonies. There was also a significant difference between the disappearance of larvae from control and treatment colonies M. cassununga (z=2.108, p=0.035). With this study it was revealed that there is a higher occurrence of social wasps in the hot season and humid in urban gardens and a direct relationship between the features presence offered in this season and the occurrence of social wasps. It was also possible to demonstrate that despite the low aggressiveness, the colonies M. cassununga showed aggressive behavior in defense of their colonies and that disturbances influence the disappearance of immature (eggs and larvae), reducing the emergence of new adults.

Forearm shaft fractures in children

Sinikumpu, J.-J. (Juha-Jaakko) 03 December 2013 (has links)
Abstract There are previous reports of an increasing incidence of children’s forearm fractures in the last few decades. Their surgical treatment is evolving. The present study was aimed at determining the incidence and background of these fractures and their treatment. It was also aimed to analyse the short- and long-term outcomes. A comprehensive population-based study (N=168) among 86,000 children in Oulu University Hospital District over a decade (2000–2009) was performed to analyse the incidence of middle-third forearm fractures. Further data (N=291) covering 1997–2009 was achieved in order to study monthly variation and backgrounds of all both-bone forearm fractures in the distal, middle or proximal thirds. An age- and sex-matched case-control study (N=94) at Vaasa Central Hospital District in 1995–1999 with approximately 11 years of follow-up was performed to evaluate long-term morbidity. The relationship between summer weather and outdoor fractures was based on daily weather readings of all summer days (N=1989) in 1997–2009. There was a 4.4-fold increase in middle-third shaft fractures in the last decade (2000–2009) and a 3.1-fold increase in all forearm shaft fractures (proximal, middle and distal) in 1997–2009. The increase in the middle-shaft fractures was still accelerating towards the end of the study period. Trampolining was increasing as a reason for the injuries. At the end of the study every third fracture was caused by a trampoline injury. The fractures caused by other recreational activities increased absolutely, but they were stable in relation to trampoline injuries. There was a clear monthly variation in fracture incidence. During the long study time, August was repeatedly the most usual month for the fractures. School terms and summer holidays did not explain the varying fracture risk. The incidence of the fractures was 50% higher in dry vs. rainy days in summer. Temperature and wind speed did not affect fracture risk. Not only were the number of children’s forearm shaft fractures increasing, but also their operative treatment in 1997–2009. The increase was mostly connected to elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN), the incidence of which changed from 10% to 30% during the study period, compared with other types of treatment. Non-operative treatment showed poor short-term outcome in the form of worsening alignment and a relatively great need of re-operations. Operative treatment showed excellent primary results. In the long run, the outcome of non-operative treatment was excellent. / Tiivistelmä Lasten kyynärvarren diafyysimurtumat ovat lisääntyneet viimeisten vuosikymmenten aikana. Samalla niiden kirurginen hoito on muuttunut. Joustavien ydinnaulojen käyttö kasvoi 10 %:sta 30 %:iin suhteessa muihin hoitomuotoihin. Kajoavan hoidon lyhytaikaiset tulokset olivat erinomaiset. Kajoamattoman hoidon tulokset olivat heikot, ja hoitoon liittyi paljon asennon huonontumista ja myöhempää leikkaustarvetta, erityisesti asennon korjaamista. Pitkän ajan seurannassa kajoamattoman hoidon tulokset olivat kuitenkin erinomaiset. Mest förekom frakturer i augusti.

Vägen till en förlängd säsong : En studie om samarbete i Stockholms skärgård / The road to a longer season : A study about cooperation in Stockholm archipelago

Gölcük, Kaan, Willebrand Vinnberg, Linnea January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how companies in the tourism industry in the Stockholm archipelago cooperate and whether cooperation can lead to longer seasons. As well as if the state-funded development projects in the archipelago have contributed to longer seasons according to the investigated companies. Methodology: In this study, a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews has been used for the gathering of empirical data. Six companies on two archipelago islands have been interviewed and used as main empirical material, but an interview with Värmdö municipality has also formed the basis for some of the empirical material. Conclusions: During this study, it has been found that cooperation between local actors is an important part of the development of the destination. Not only is the cooperation a part of the destination development, it can also help extend the season. According to the interviewees, the development projects have not benefited them. It is apparent that the entrepreneurs believe that they themselves that must work hard for any change to happen.
