I only want to be human : Disembarkation platforms for refugees - not concentration camps

Edvinsson, Berit January 2019 (has links)
In this study I have studied the European Unions suggestion about disembarkation of refugees from a human rights perspective - especially the perspective of human value and human dignity. Human dignity is central. It is expressed in the preamble to the UN Human Rights, as well as in its first paragraph; “Everyone has the right to dignity, and it shall not be violated.” I have studied refugees that have previously spent time in large refugee camps outside Europe, in Jordan and in Libya. In my study I use Libya as an example on what refugees can face in camps in third-world countries. The subject caught my attention since the Norwegian ship MS Tampa picked up refugees on international water outside Australia. The Norwegian captain tried to leave them on Australian land but was refused to do so. Australia sent a military boat to pick them up and left them at an island outside Australia. Moreover European politicians have discussed the idea of off-shore, placements of refugees at disembarkation camps as a way of solving the problem of huge number of refugees that are looking for asylum in Europe as well as the many deaths at the Mediterranean Sea. There has also been a discussion on quota refugees chosen by the UNHCR. This made me wonder how the situation would be for the remaining refugees that will stay in these large camps, maybe for years, as well as how their human rights are respected in camps outside Europe where Europe have no control? How does this correspond to the principle of human value? In my qualitative study I started by making a literature study. Thereafter continued with an interview study where I interviewed refugees that have stayed at camps outside Europe. The purpose of the interview and the study was to take part of their narratives and to make their voices heard. I found that the narrative of refugees is not heard, this makes them feel less valued as human, or not even a human. Their dignity is violated, and their human rights are not respected. Their interests have been forced to give way to the interest of the state.

The new Cross-Strait governance model?-the planning and the development of pingtan integrated testing zone

Chuang, Meng Huan Unknown Date (has links)

Diaspora, identity and Xhosa ancestral tradition: culture in transience

Nkosinkulu, Zingisa January 2015 (has links)
Text in English / Most Xhosa people experience the condition of feeling dislocated and confused when choosing a spiritual belief between Christianity and Xhosa ancestral traditions. This study uses the concept of diaspora to describe the mental dislocation that people whose culture has changed experience. This study is based on the phenomenon of diaspora as a state of identity in the contemporary cultural identity of amaXhosa, the people of the Eastern Cape Province, by exploring the interrelationship between the key concepts, namely, identity, culture, land, and home as they relate to ancestral worship and Christian practice. Two installation artworks by Bill Viola and Nicholas Hlobo were selected for a comparative analysis under the spectacle of Xhosa ancestral tradition. In this study, I seek to understand how identity is constructed within a particular geographical and ideological culture and how self-identity can be constituted through the construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of cultural histories. Touching on notions of mediation, altar, and dislocation, this study uses Martin Buber’s concept of I AND THOU to weave the key concepts together. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Visual Arts)

When Picture Books Speak of Space. Spaces and spatiality in children’s picture books

Meunier, Christophe 04 December 2014 (has links)
The work presented in this dissertation fits in the field of cultural geography and hopes to prove that there exists a spatial turning point as defined by Edward Soja in 1996, which will allow a further look into societies, analyzing them by means of the cultural objects that they produce.Children’s picture books, these books conceived for the young public which combine images, props, and very often text in a relationship of interdependence, constitute the objects of this research work. Considered as geographic cultural products, they question, state, represent, and stage spaces and spatialities.Drawing from a body of narrative, iconotextual picture books published in France between 1919 and 2012, this work intends to demonstrate that there exists an interdependence among three narrative instances (textual, iconic, and plastic) and that this interdependence generates and imagines not only space for the reader but also a spatial intentionality, a transmission of living such as envisioned by the author-illustrator.The last part of this work, more exploratory, proposes seeing in children’s books a place of communication in which the spatial intentionality would help the child-reader to act on the space. The reception, the esthetic experience, the performative reading of the picture book would allow the child to construct for himself a spatial cultural capital in which he could delve to “play with” the space in which he lives or that he will have to live.

Morphology, patterns and processes in the Oyster Bay headland bypass dunefield, South Africa / Investigation of the relationship between morphology, patterns and processes in a headland bypass dunefield, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

McConnachie, Lauren Bernyse January 2013 (has links)
Studies of the dunefield systems crossing the Cape St. Francis headland in the Eastern Cape have focused on the role that wind plays in sediment transfer in coastal dunefield systems, with limited consideration of the role of water. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the morphology, processes and patterns within the Oyster Bay HBD system, focussing particularly on surface water and groundwater interactions and the role of surface water in sediment transfer across the dunefield system. An extensive field survey was conducted, to collect related data, complimented by spatial and temporal analysis of the study area using GIS. The key findings from this research were the apparent differences between the western and eastern regions of the dunefield with regard to specific drivers and the respective processes and responses. Wind is the major driver of change up to and across the crest of the dunefield. In the eastern region water (ground water, surface water and the Sand River System) is the primary agent of sediment flux through processes of aggregation and slumping as well as episodic events including debris flows. This study has highlighted a need for further quantitative studies that investigate the movement of sediment through dunefield systems such as this (where water is at or near the land surface). The paradigm that sediment flux is entirely due to wind is almost certainly simplistic, and deeper understanding of these systems is needed / Maiden name: Elkington, Lauren

Resonant overvoltages caused by transformer energization and saturation : Two EMT case studies conducted using models of the grid in Stockholm and an off-shore wind farm

Sundberg, Gustav January 2021 (has links)
This thesis investigates the impact of resonant overvoltages and their origin. Series and parallel resonances are present in any electrical grid. The frequency of which this resonance occurs is called resonance frequency. For parallel resonance, which is mainly being studied in this thesis, a high impedance peak can be found at the resonance frequency. This impedance peak in conjunction with a harmonic rich current cause a kind of temporary overvoltages called resonant overvoltages. The harmonic content of the current is high following a fault clearing in the grid, due to transformer saturation. The resonance frequency is heavily dependent on the amount of reactance present in the grid, which entail that a change in reactance causes a change in the resonance frequency. The electromagnetic transient tool PSCAD has been used to investigate resonant overvoltages following transformer energization caused by faults and switching in Stockholm. Secondly, a model was created of a grid connecting off-shore wind power to the mainland via long AC submarine transmission cables. These cables, having a high capacitance, lower the resonance frequency. Faults in this model were simulated to investigate the phenomenon of resonant overvoltages in such a grid. This was especially interesting due to Swedens planned expansion of wind power in the Baltic sea. While resonant overvoltages were found in Stockholm they were not deemed significant due to their low magnitude and longevity. However, severe resonant overvoltages were found in the off-shore wind farm model. The worst resonant overvoltages had a maximum amplitude of the 2nd order harmonic voltage of 130 kV which, while eventually damped, were significant for up to 50 periods. Lastly, the phenomenon of an increased resonance frequency during the saturation of a transformer was studied. The most severe resonant overvoltages occured in a model where the frequency scans showed a resonance frequency of 98 Hz. Indicating, caution needs to be had during EMT-studies of resonant overvoltages while choosing what resonance frequency to study.

Grid Forming Wind Power Plants: Black start operation for HVAC grids and Diode Rectifier-based Wind Power Plant integration

Martínez Turégano, Jaime 28 February 2022 (has links)
[EN] The European Union GREEN DEAL aims to make its 27 members climate-neutral by 2050. The decarbonization of the energy sector stands out as one of the proposed actions. To achieve that goal, the target for wind power generation is set at 1,200 GW in 2050, from the 190 GW that was had in 2019. The closure of power plants based on large synchronous generators and the increase of power electronics based generation such as Wind Power Plants (WPPs) or photovoltaic plants, leads to the use of grid forming controllers for power electronics based renewable energy. Grid forming control strategies for wind turbines generators (WTGs) must consider active and reactive power sharing control (droop control in synchronous generators) as well as a protection system that allows a quick recovery after fault clearance. Moreover, a transition from the conventional grid following WPPs to new grid forming WPPs is required. The transition must consider the parallel operation of both technologies for a long time. Thus, it is necessary to study the stability of Wind Power Plants with both technologies, as well as the study of how much grid forming generation is required to keep a mixed grid forming and grid following WPP stable in any situation. In addition, the use of grid forming WPPs allows different applications such as the energization of HVAC and HVDC grids after a blackout from these WPPs, or the use of diode rectifiers in HVDC links for the off-shore WPPs connection. An aggregation technique for type-4 WTGs has been proposed in this thesis in order to facilitate the study and design of grid forming WPPs. The aggregation technique allows to reduce the WPP complexity for its study and analysis. The main contributions of this theses are: A design methodology has been proposed for the parallel operation of grid forming and grid following WTGs. Including the stability analysis of the complete system. Additionally, a fault control strategy is proposed to ensure a fast and safe recovery. The use of H∞ control techniques is also proposed for grid forming controller tuning. Using H∞ control techniques for controller design may improve the robustness of the controllers as well as the performance of the controllers. A procedure to carry out black start operation of HVAC grid from mixed grid forming and grid following WPPs has been proposed. The obtained results validate that the procedure works as expected. Moreover, the results show that the amount of grid-forming generation usually is determined by the load size steps as stability limits are usually less stringent. Finally, protection strategies have been proposed for the integration of off-shore WWPs in multi-terminal HVDC grids using diode rectifiers. Grid forming WPPs are able to help managing faults. Their use allow lower requirements of the HVDC protection equipment, leading to overall cost reduction and an increment of the system robustness. / Martínez Turégano, J. (2022). Smittspridning ombord på fartyg : En studie om hantering av smittspridning ombord på fartyg och rederiers smittskyddsplaner / The spread of infection onboard ships : A study on managing the spread of infection on board ships and shipping companies' infection control plans

Djurberg, Fabian, Danielsson, Mak January 2024 (has links)
In 2020, the world was struck by Covid-19. The spread of the virus resulted with many countries establishing  lockdowns. This negatively affected the shipping industry and caused problems when people got sick. This is because of the unique environment that exists on board ships. The purpose of the study was to analyze and evaluate how different ships and shipping companies acted during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on efficiency, success and problems when it came to controlling the spread of infections. The study's questions concerned how shipping companies' infection control plans were complied with and whether they can be improved, what lessons can be learned about the spread of infections on board ships and whether an improved infection control plan can be constructed from those that already exist. A qualitative method of reviewing and reading studies in the field of infection control in general and studies on COVID-19 outbreaks on board ships. Infection control plans were collected through a mailing to Swedish shipping companies. The results showed that the shipping companies complied with many of the WHO's guidelines where they also implemented their own additions to the on-board infection control plan. We also came to the conclusion that land-based assistance is an important component for combating the spread of infections on board.

Teasdale, Emilie 08 1900 (has links)
The archaeological sites along the coastal territory that stretches from Saguenay–Lac Saint-Jean to Northern Labrador possess at least 78 collections of glass beads. These small objects, testifying to both formal and informal intercultural exchanges, can serve as significant chrono typological references, and yet the numerous collections discovered in this area have not been studied to their full potential. Based on a total of over 20,000 glass beads found at these sites, this thesis first constructs a chrono-typology specific to this region and its history. It does so by identifying a highly diagnostic corpus of 24 bead types represented at 19 sites. These fossiles directeurs stand out visually during specific periods of time. Subsequently, the thesis defines “complexes” of diagnostic beads that form the basis of a regional chrono-typology covering there years from 1580 to 1870.Using this chrono-typology, this thesis relies on the regional distribution of beads, knowledge about the types of beads and their origins, and the history of navigation in the territory studied and across the northern Atlantic to reconstruct maritime networks at play between Europe and various ports and harbors along the coast extending from Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean to northern Labrador, passing through the Strait of Belle-Isle. It is possible to trace the movement of these artefacts in the North Atlantic maritime space over three centuries and to observe changing and/or enduring structures of these maritime networks through the glass bead complexes. This study follows the typological system of Kidd and Kidd (1970) and the chrono-typological model of Kenyon and Kenyon’s Glass Bead Periods (1983), thus connecting this work to other specialized research on glass beads.

Temporal Variations in the Compliance of Gas Hydrate Formations

Roach, Lisa Aretha Nyala 20 March 2014 (has links)
Seafloor compliance is a non-intrusive geophysical method sensitive to the shear modulus of the sediments below the seafloor. A compliance analysis requires the computation of the frequency dependent transfer function between the vertical stress, produced at the seafloor by the ultra low frequency passive source-infra-gravity waves, and the resulting displacement, related to velocity through the frequency. The displacement of the ocean floor is dependent on the elastic structure of the sediments and the compliance function is tuned to different depths, i.e., a change in the elastic parameters at a given depth is sensed by the compliance function at a particular frequency. In a gas hydrate system, the magnitude of the stiffness is a measure of the quantity of gas hydrates present. Gas hydrates contain immense stores of greenhouse gases making them relevant to climate change science, and represent an important potential alternative source of energy. Bullseye Vent is a gas hydrate system located in an area that has been intensively studied for over 2 decades and research results suggest that this system is evolving over time. A partnership with NEPTUNE Canada allowed for the investigation of this possible evolution. This thesis describes a compliance experiment configured for NEPTUNE Canada’s seafloor observatory and its failure. It also describes the use of 203 days of simultaneously logged pressure and velocity time-series data, measured by a Scripps differential pressure gauge, and a Güralp CMG-1T broadband seismometer on NEPTUNE Canada’s seismic station, respectively, to evaluate variations in sediment stiffness near Bullseye. The evaluation resulted in a (- 4.49 x10-3± 3.52 x 10-3) % change of the transfer function of 3rd October, 2010 and represents a 2.88% decrease in the stiffness of the sediments over the period. This thesis also outlines a new algorithm for calculating the static compliance of isotropic layered sediments.
