Utmaningar och framtidsmöjligheter för utvecklingen av Svensk Kärnbränslehantering ABs lösning KBS-3 / Challenges and Future Opportunities for the Development of Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB’s Solution KBS-3

Wallin, Alva, Rosén, Tilda, Harding Olsson, Hjalmi January 2024 (has links)
This study examines the KBS-3 method for nuclear waste management developed by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Company (SKB). This report strives to uncover potential challenges and opportunities for the future development of KBS-3. The study is relevant because the Swedish government is investing in nuclear power where waste must be safely stored to protect the environment from radiation. From a technical perspective, the results indicate a difficult balance between developing the method in line with new research and realising the project. A possible method for the future is reprocessing, but even here the need for KBS-3 would remain as a smaller amount of waste still needs to be stored. Furthermore, from a social perspective, there does not seem to be a clear consensus between researchers and the industry, particularly regarding corrosion risks. Although these discussions can improve the method, there is a risk that they may negatively impact public trust in KBS-3. Similarly, regarding the commercialisation of stakeholder management: it is important that social acceptance is earned through genuine engagement rather than something being sold. From a cost perspective, small improvements are crucial for KBS-3. Saving money within the value chain without compromising safety is vital, but SKB must communicate such changes openly to ensure continued social acceptance. Balancing conflicting goals: technology, social acceptance, and costs seem to reflect a broader societal challenge where different interests often oppose each other. While some may be satisfied with KBS-3 for final disposal even in the future, others may want to continue striving for a solution that does not burden future generations at all. Regardless, KBS-3 can continue to develop as a solution for nuclear waste management in Sweden until a more sustainable method emerges.

Aushandlungen unter Kindern : Einsatz verschiedener Taktiken im Verlauf einer Aushandlung und Stellung in der Peergruppe / Negotiations among children : the use of different tactics during negotiation and peer group status

Schrenk, Judith Katharina January 2005 (has links)
The dissertation dealt with the following questions: How do children react, when a peer infringes upon their rights? What immediate outcomes are connected to their actions? What is the relation between the way children proceed in the conflict situation and their social standing among their peers? As a theoretical background served the modells about negotiations by Yeates and Selman (1989) as well as Hawley (1999). 213 third- and fifthgraders participated in the study. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Children were individually interviewed to assess what tactics (unit of action) as well as what strategies (sequence of tactics) they would apply in a hypothetical conflict involving a rights infraction. Children were also asked what immediate outcomes they expected, using the proposed tactic. Children's social standing was assessed concerning their influence (peerrating) as well as their acceptance (sociometrie) among their classmates. The tactics propsed by the children were assigned to four superordinate categories: negotiate, coerce, get out of the way, give in. According to the expectations of the children both negotiation tactics and coercive tactics lead to assertion in about half of the cases. Coercive tactics however often evoque unfriendly responses. Children differed in their influence and acceptance depending on the combination and sequence of tactics (strategy) they chose. For example children, which generated a series of negotiation tactics and children, which proposed negotiation tactics in the beginning and coercion tactics later were both influental and liked. Children, which chose coercion allready in the beginning had little influence and were rejected. Also gender and age differences were found concerning the tactics chosen in the hypothetical conflict situation and the relation between tactics and social standing among peers.

Electricity transmission line planning: Success factors for transmission system operators to reduce public opposition

Perras, Stefan 26 February 2015 (has links)
Europe requires significant transmission grid expansions to foster the integration of electricity markets, enhance security of supply and integrate renewable energies. However, next to lengthy authorization processes, transmission system operators (TSOs) in Europe are currently facing extreme public opposition in their transmission line projects leading to significant project delays. These delays imply significant additional costs for TSOs as well as society as a whole and put the transformation of the European energy system at risk. Existing scientific literature currently lacks comprehensive studies that have tried to identify generalizable success factors to overcome public opposition in transmission line projects. The goal of work at hand was to close this research gap. Potential success factors were collected through extensive literature review and interviews throughout Europe with respective stakeholders such as citizen action groups, NGOs or energy experts. Experiences from analogue large infrastructure projects like wind parks, carbon capture and storage facilities, hydro dams, nuclear waste repositories, etc. were also used to form hypotheses. The findings were transformed into a structural equation model and tested through a questionnaire answered by almost all European TSOs. Results revealed that people’s trust in the TSO is of utmost importance for less public opposition. It can be regarded as the critical success factor per se. TSOs can create trust through stakeholder participation, sufficient communication, proper organizational readiness and liaison with stakeholders. Furthermore, appropriate technical planning can help to reduce public opposition in transmission line projects. In total 18 concrete and actionable success factors were identified for TSO management to facilitate the establishment of these aforementioned aspects. They will help European TSOs to reduce public opposition and thus accelerate the implementation of new transmission lines. Interestingly, economic benefits for people did not turn out to be a Significant success factor in reducing their opposition against new transmission lines.:Contents I List of tables VIII List of figures IX List of abbreviations XI List of symbols XV List of country codes XVI 1 Introduction 1 1.1 Problem statement 1 1.2 Thematic classification and research gap 2 1.3 Objective, research questions and scop e of work 3 1.4 Methodology and structure of work 5 2 Fundamentals of electricity transmission line planning 7 2.1 History of the European electricity transmission network 7 2.2 Transmission technologies 9 2.2.1 High-voltage alternating current (HVAC) 9 2.2.1.1 High - Συμβολή στη διερεύνηση των οικονομικών και πολιτικών προοπτικών εξέλιξης των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Δυτικής Ελλάδας / Contribution to the investigation of economic and policy perspectives development of renewable energy sources in the wider region of Western Greece

Στίγκα, Ελένη 26 August 2014 (has links)
In the last decades, under the spectrum of sustainable development, a turn to the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is observed and parallel reduction of the use of conventional fuels, as a way out to the confrontation of environmental problems such as climate change. The evaluation, in economic terms, of the penetration of RES in the energy mix, is realized through techniques of non market valuation. The main purpose of the present research is the evaluation in economic units of households Willingness to Pay (WTP) to deposit an additional amount of money to make investments in order to produce electric power from RES. Especially, it is the examination of correlation of socioeconomics characteristics, energy behavior and social acceptance of the local community for projects using renewable energy, with the willingness of economic contribution for the electricity production deriving from RES but also with the real deposit amount of money to a bi-monthly electricity bill, through techniques of non market valuation. The energy behavior and the WTP are examined by Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) which is applied in the present, appreciating a hypothetical scenario, with the use of a questionnaire, expressed preferences of the public, giving quantity essentially to non market values. The target framework is limited in the Aitoloakarnania County. The final choice of the households was made by a mix of convenience sampling and snowball sampling. From January until April 2012, were distributed questionnaires to 280 households from which 201 were returned completed. From the analysis is inferred that it is more informative about the solar energy and wind, biomass and hydroelectric follow. It is also expressed positive view in case of making projects of exploitation RES and believed that in the future they will occupy a great share in the energy mix. The cost of consumption of electric power for households is estimated about €301-400 per a bi-monthly electricity bill. Fewer than half of the respondents are available to pay €10 more, for the electric power from RES, whereas a high percentage appears not to be available to pay more because of lack of money. At the same time, a group of consumers is available to have a reduction in the expenses in the sector of entertainment in order to save money for facing the additional cost. Principal components from identical groups have been extracted such as the awareness of the public about the partial forms of RES, the future role of the different forms in the energy mix, the consequences of investments by using RES, the following obstacles during the implementation and the measures of solving them. Cluster analysis identified that the public is grouped in two clusters. The sample which belongs to the first cluster is of older age, not so educated and economically weaker. The sample of the second cluster is of a younger age, more educated and financially more powerful. It is noted that after a multiple regression analysis, the participation in cluster did not constitute statistically important variable. The model of regression of WTP showed that parameters such as age, family members and the principal component which concerns the public awareness as concerning the partial forms of energy were important. It is obvious that as the number of family members is increasing, the age as well as the awareness in specific forms of RES, so grater is the average deposit of the amount of money in the bi-monthly electricity bill and the WTP is increasing in order to pay the additional amount for the production of electric power which is based on RES. In additional, the average income of the households has a small positive influence in regard with the payment of the electricity bill and very negative as concerning the willingness of additional amount of money. The public supports that the existence of RES investments will have generally positive consequences in the broad area that the local society will have positive stance if some obstacles are overcome and take certain measures such as financial motives. Finally, the results of multiple regression models were compared with the canonical correlation analysis. For further research is proposed the examination of other hypothetical scenarios and of other forms of payment.

A Framework for Obtaining Social Acceptance in Greenfield Projects within Hard-to-Abate Industries

Larsson, Emil, Norberg, Fredrika January 2024 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to develop a framework for obtaining social acceptance in the establishment of greenfield projects within hard-to-abate industries by identifying key factors and activities related to the topic. Method: The research was based on an exploratory single-case study of a Swedish greenfield project. The study aimed to gain a nuanced understanding of factors and activities regarding various aspects of the topic. A qualitative approach was used to deepen knowledge and insights into the research gap. The empirical data was collected in three phases: through exploratory workshops, interviews with representatives from the local community, and interviews with representatives from the establishing company. Findings: We have identified several factors and activities that consist of componentfactors/activities that provide a more detailed description of each factor and activity. This identification of influential factors, coupled with the proposal of activities to attain social acceptance, provides project managers with a tangible framework to obtain social acceptance. Factors affecting social acceptance in greenfield projects are (1) Community relationship, (2) Project information, (3) Operational concerns related to the project, (4) Ripple effect concerns, (5) Regional growth, and (6) Sustainability. The key activities we have found to stimulate the factors successfully are (1) Collaborating with external parties, (2) Establishing a communication strategy, (3) Community segmentation, (4) Going above and beyond legal obligations, (5) Community engagement, (6) Create trust by genuineness, and (7) Allocate financial resources to community investments. Theoretical contribution: This study contributes to the literature by verifying that many of the factors identified by previous scholars also apply to greenfield projects within hard-to-abate industries. Even if empirical evidence does not explicitly state the same factors and activities, we have verified that they are closely related. Further on, our developed framework fills an identifiedresearch gap by offering a more comprehensive understanding of the connections between factors and activities influencing social acceptance. Managerial contribution The developed framework in this thesis is designed to guide managers through three critical phases in their work to obtain social acceptance. These phases are pre-launch, launch, and integration. The framework enables managers to identify needed capabilities and systematically address key factors influencing social acceptance. By utilizing this framework, managers can create value by mitigating risks such as operational setbacks, economic losses, reputational damage, opposition, social conflicts, and sabotage.

Informing practice and sabotaging membership growth: an ideological rhetorical analysis of discursive materials from Kiwanis International

Stokes, Tonja LaFaye 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study utilizes an ideological rhetorical analysis, applying Marxist and Feminist lenses, to artifacts from Kiwanis International, a prominent global service organization. These artifacts are: "The Permanent Objects of Kiwanis," guiding principles that were codified in 1924; "The Man Who Was God": a brief story about transforming from Kiwanis member to "Kiwanian," published in 1935 and 1985, respectively; and the 2012 "Join the Club" Membership Brochure. The rhetoric of discursive materials is one of the most salient representations of group ideology. In turn, ideology, particularly when it reflects and perpetuates social hegemony, has a normalizing effect on itself. Ideology shapes identity; identity shapes strategies to set process norms that create social cohesion. Norms of social cohesion become culture; culture reinforces ideology. When these components mirror social hegemony and replicate hegemonic power, they create institutions, like service organizations; these institutions then legitimate and normalize positions of social privilege. Ultimately, ideology and social hegemony reveal themselves through organizational and member practices and organizationally-produced discursive material. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical, socio-political, and socio-cultural roots of Kiwanis International in order to draw logical conclusions about the organization's ideology for the purposes of understanding how that ideology contributes to, justifies, and perpetuates an unconscious, neo-colonial view of philanthropy. Kiwanis International, on an organizational (macro) level and at the club/member (micro) level, is structured around positions of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, linguistic, gender, and religious privilege, and so mimics the hegemonic power centers and dominant ideologies of society at large. In turn, the products and practices of the organization reflect these positions of privilege and inhibits the organization's ability to attract traditionally excluded, disenfranchised, or under-represented groups. Understanding that it is a contentious and futile to simply point where power relations exist and assert themselves, this study emphasizes where "othering" occurs in hopes of mitigating relations of domination and oppression between Kiwanis members and perspective members, and of moving forward the interests of those who have not traditionally been counted among Kiwanis' members but whose presence could save the organization.

Daarom stel opvoedkundiges toenemend meer in groepdruk as fenomeen belang. / The aim of education is to guide the child towards adulthood. An adult is expected to know himself, follow an inherent sense of values, make moral decisions independently and accept responsibility. Group pressure hampers the attainment of the above characteristics during adolescence and therefore makes education problematic. For this reason educationists are taking a growing interest in group pressure as a phenomenon. The aim of this study was to develop a measuring instrument to identify adolescents who find it difficult to deal with group pressure. In addition it was also the aim to determine the most important variables which relate to group pressure. A literature study was undertaken in order to analyse group pressure as a phenomenon, to analyse the measurability of group pressure and to determine which factors relate to group pressure. An instrument was developed to measure group pressure (reliability coefficient: 0,86). An empiricalinvestigation was carried out involving 452 high school adolescents (234 boys and 228 girls). In addition to group pressure, several variables were measured such as the individual's relationship with parents and friends, his self-concept, values, intelligence and personality. Biographical information such as gender, age, number of demerits, extra mural activities and birth order was collated. From the empirical investigation it seems that • group pressure shows a decline from Grade 8 to 12; • self concept, age, popularity and relationship with friends can be considered the most important variables relating to group pressure. The implications of the findings in the literature study and empirical investigation were discussed with the aim to provide parents and teachers with guidelines which they can apply to make adolescents less vulnerable to group pressure. / Psychology of Education / D.
