Cette recherche examine les pratiques politiques médiatisées des migrants marocains. En mobilisant une double approche diachronique et synchronique, on montre dans un premier temps que ces pratiques ne datent pas d’aujourd’hui mais qu’elles sont concomitantes aux premières vagues migratoires marocaines. A travers l’analyse d’un corpus de « presse militante », on approche la façon dont se manifestent les appartenances, les différentes stratégies de représentation d’un soi collectif ainsi que les formes d’expression des identités politiques de ces migrants, pendant la période coloniale et durant le processus de démocratisation du Maroc. On étudie dans un deuxième temps les pratiques politiques qui se construisent, circulent et se donnent à voir dans différents espaces en ligne pour comprendre comment elles participent à la construction et à la réécriture de la marocanité. Toutes ces pratiques politiques médiatisées ne se déroulent pas dans un vide social. Il est primordial de prendre en compte, pour leur appréhension, du cadre sociopolitique dans lequel elles se déroulent mais aussi de la question de la stratification sociale. Au delà de la question de la technique, c’est l’action symbolique d’écriture de la politique qui réunit l’ensemble des acteurs migrants engagés dans ce type de pratiques depuis les années 1930 et jusqu’à nos jours. Le geste d’écriture, comme action performative promettant d’obtenir une existence et une visibilité, est toujours accompagné par cet espoir de reconquérir une parole confisquée par un pouvoir politique dominant. A travers la médiation de l’écriture, ces pratiques médiatisées sont l’expression d’une volonté d’action de quelques groupes de migrants, déterritorialisés et non investis d’autorité, mais qui veulent prendre la parole pour s’exprimer sur ce qui se passe là-Bas, dans leur pays d’origine. / This research examines the mediatized political practices of Moroccan migrants. By mobilizing a double diachronic and synchronic approaches, this paper shows firstly that these practices are not new but concomitant with the first Moroccan migration waves. Through the analysis of an “activist press” corpus, this research shows how memberships, the different strategies of representation of collective, and political identities of these migrants during the colonial period and during the process of democratization in Morocco, are manifested. Secondly, this paper studied political practices, which circulate in different online spaces, to understand how they contribute to the construction and rewriting of the “Moroccaness”. For a better understanding, it is essential to take into account the socio-Political context in which these mediatized political practices are developed, in addition to issues of social stratification. Beyond the question of technology, it is the symbolic action of writing the policy that gathers all migrant actors who have been engaged in such practices since the 1930s until today. The act of writing as a performative action, which holds the promise of achieving existence and visibility, is always accompanied by the hope of regaining a voice, which has been cloaked by the dominant political power. Through the mediation of writing, these practices are the expression of the action of some migrant groups, who are deterritorialized and not invested with any authority, but who want to take the floor to articulate about what is happening in their homeland.

Depuis ses débuts, l’industrie hollywoodienne utilise des stéréotypes dépréciatifs des Latinos pour construire une série de personnages menaçants qui cristallisent les peurs de la société américaine. Cette recherche se concentre sur le festival de cinéma latino Cine Las Americas (Austin, Texas) et questionne les stratégies explicites et sous-jacentes mises en œuvre pour déconstruire ces stéréotypes. Dans un premier temps, il s’agit de faire émerger les phases qui ont permis à Cine Las Americas de s’institutionnaliser entre 1998 et 2017. En se concentrant sur une année type (2012), la recherche met également en lumière la synergie avec Austin, ville créative « excentrique » (weird) de façon à montrer en quoi elle est un terrain fertile pour le festival. Elle place également Cine las Americas dans le contexte historique des festivals de films latinos pour en comprendre l’émergence au tournant du millénaire et les spécificités. Dans un deuxième temps, après avoir fait un état des lieux des stéréotypes latinos véhiculés par Hollywood et des stratégies cognitives utilisées pour les construire, le contenu des films des quinze premiers festivals (1998-2012) est analysé dans le but de mettre en évidence les contre-stéréotypes correspondants, notamment à travers l’image du migrant, figure centrale d’un groupe de films sur la frontière. L’analyse fait émerger les thèmes fédérateurs, les contre-récits et questionne l’héritage Chicano de Cine Las Americas. Dans un dernier temps, la thèse s’intéresse à la place de Cine Las Americas dans les réseaux transnationaux et locaux de ses débuts à 2017. Il s’agit de déterminer comment les films « des Amériques » sont utilisés pour articuler la mission anti-stéréotype et faire émerger la figure collective des Indigènes, démontrant ainsi comment Cine Las Americas est devenu un « événement configurateur de champ » (Field-Configuring Event). Cette stratégie confirme le rôle moteur d’Austin et permet de voir les organisateurs comme des diplomates culturels. / From the beginning, Hollywood has used disparaging stereotypes about Latinos to create a series of threatening characters that give shape to the fears of the American society. This research focuses on the Latino film festival Cine Las Americas (Austin, Texas) and questions the explicit and underlying strategies used to deconstruct such stereotypes. First, the study analyzes the different phases that have allowed Cine Las Americas to become an institution between 1998 and 2017. The research also highlights the synergy with the city of Austin, « weird » Creative City, to show how it represents a fertile ground for the festival. It also situates Cine Las Americas in the historical context of Latino film festivals in order to understand their emergence at the turn of the millenium and their specificities.Second, after going over the Hollywood stereotypes about Latinos, the content of the movies from the first fifteen festivals (1998-2012) is analyzed to shed light on the corresponding counter-stereotypes, especially through the image of the migrant, the central figure of the movies about the border. The analysis sheds light on the unifying themes and the counter-narratives and questions Cine Las Americas’s Chicano heritage. Last, the research seeks to consider Cine Las Americas’s position in international and local networks from the beginning to 2017. It seeks to determine how the movies from « the Americas » are used to implement the anti-stereotype mission and to bring forth the collective figure of the Indigenous people, thus demonstrating how Cine Las Americas has become a Field-Configuring Event (FCE). This strategy confirms Austin’s driving force and portrays the organizors as cultural diplomats.

Cette thèse porte sur l'engagement de la société civile dans les relations franco-allemandes entre 1989 et 2013, avec une ouverture portant jusqu'à l'année 2017. Son objectif est d'étudier le rôle, l'organisation et le caractère transnational de six initiatives franco-allemandes face à l'intégration européenne et à la mondialisation. Tout en démontrant l'importance de l'engagement citoyen, cette thèse s'interroge sur la place de la relation franco-allemande dans nos sociétés actuelles. L'interdisciplinarité du travail nécessite la mobilisation de plusieurs méthodes de recherche. L'exploitation des archives propres à chaque association se révèle particulièrement importante, pour pouvoir illustrer l'évolution des initiatives citoyennes sur la base de données empiriques. Dans un premier temps, l'analyse procède par catégories : (1) communication, (2) conception des programmes/orientation thématique, (3) réseautage et (4) professionnalisation/potentiel d'innovation. Ensuite, la thèse explore l'importance du capital social individuel (Bourdieu) des personnalités clés au sein d'une association ainsi que le capital social collectif (Putnam) généré par ces associations. Les relations que les associations entretiennent au sein du réseau franco-allemand et les liens qu'entretiennent les personnages clés avec d'autres acteurs situés en dehors de cet espace binational sont deux éléments importants pour la visibilité, le poids et l'utilité sociale des initiatives (Gadrey). Enfin, le travail pose la question de savoir si ces associations constituent des hétérotopies (Foucault) qui suscitent un habitus particulier tout en créant une conscience franco-allemande. Ainsi, cette thèse s'emploie à démontrer l'importance d'un réseau associatif transnational. / This thesis discusses the civil society engagement in the relationship between France and Germany between 1989 and 2013, with an outlook until 2017. Its objective is to study the role, the organisation and the transnational character of six Franco-German associations in the face of European integration and globalisation. By showing the importance of civil society engagement, this thesis questions the place of the Franco-German relationship in our contemporary society. The multidisciplinarity of this thesis demands the application of different methodological approaches. The analysis of empirical data through the examination of the associations' archives is particularly important in order to show the development of the initiatives. First, the material is analysed by the categories (1) communication, (2) program conception/main topics, (3) networking and (4) professionalization/innovation potential, which reveal different challenges such as the ageing of the members. Then, the thesis explores the importance of individual social capital (Bourdieu) for an association disposed by key personalities as well as the collective social capital (Putnam) generated by these associations. Not only the relations the associations are maintaining within the Franco-German network but also the connections key personalities have outside of the binational space are important for the visibility, wages and social utility of the initiatives (Gadrey). Finally, the thesis asks if these associations could be characterized as heterotopy (Foucault), which evokes a particular habitus by creating a Franco-German self-conception. The analysis therefore attempts to show the importance of a transnational association network.

Imperial Standard-Bearers: Nineteenth-Century Army Officers' Wives in British India and the American WestMcInnis, Verity 2012 May 1900 (has links)
The comparative experiences of the nineteenth-century British and American Army officer's wives add a central dimension to studies of empire. Sharing their husbands' sense of duty and mission, these women transferred, adopted, and adapted national values and customs, to fashion a new imperial sociability, influencing the course of empire by cutting across and restructuring gender, class, and racial borders. Stationed at isolated stations in British India and the American West, many officers' wives experienced homesickness and disorientation. They reimagined military architecture and connected into the military esprit de corps, to sketch a blueprint of female identity and purpose. On the physical journeys to join their husbands, and post arrival, the feminization of formal and informal military practices produced a new social reality and facilitated the development of an empowered sisterhood that sustained imperialist ambitions. This appropriation of symbols, processes, and rankings facilitated roles as social functionaries and ceremonial performers.
Additionally, in utilizing dress, and home decor, military spouses drafted and projected an imperial identity that reflected, yet transformed upper and middle-class gender models. An examination of the social processes of calling and domestic rituals confirms the formation of a distinct and influential imperial female identity. The duty of protecting the social gateway to the imperial community, rested with a hostess?s ability to discriminate ? and convincingly reject parvenus. In focusing on the domestic site it becomes clear that the mistress-servant relationship both formulated and reproduced imperial ideologies. Within the home, the most intimate of inter-racial, inter-ethnic, and inter-class contact zones, the physiological trait of a white skin, and the exhibition of national artifacts signaled identity, status, and authority. Military spouses, then, generated social power as arbiters, promoters, and police officers of an imperial class, reaffirming internal confidence within the Anglo communities, and legitimizing external representations of the power and prestige of empire.

Estudio cualitativo y cuantitativo de las apropiaciones de espacios públicos y semipúblicos de Barcelona y poblaciones limítrofes para la práctica del deporte por parte de colectivos de trabajadores extranjeros procedentes preferentemente de la región de Cochabamba, en Bolivia. Una parte del trabajo investigador se realizó en las poblaciones bolivianas de origen, con el fin de establecer qué pautas se reproducen y cuáles se modifican o se generan de nuevo en Catalunya.
La investigación hace el inventario y registra las características de cuarenta espacios abiertos, algunos deportivos convencionales y otros improvisados e informales. La aproximación cualitativa se centra en tres de esos espacios para observar cómo se desarrollan en ellos un amplia gama de actividades que trascienden de largo las meramente deportivas o lúdicas e involucran aspectos estratégicos de las dinámicas de incorporación y asentamiento en la sociedad de recepción.
La tesis también recoge los conflictos resultantes de la desconsideración que este tipo de usos hacían objeto de las normativas municipales vigentes en materia de espacio público y los procesos de negociación con las autoridades que este tipo de desajustes suscitaba. / Qualitative and quantitative study (survey) regarding appropriation of public and semi-public spaces of Barcelona and neighbouring towns in order to practice sports by foreign groups of workers mainly from the region of Cochabamba, Bolivia. One part of the investigation was carried out in the original Bolivian villages in Cochabamba in order to establish which patterns are reproduced and which modified or recreated in Catalunya.
The investigation surveys and registers the characteristics of forty open spaces, some conventional sports grounds, others improvised and informal. The qualitative approach is focused on three of those spaces in order to observe how a wide range of activities which transcend the merely sporting or recreational ones are developed in them and involve strategic aspects of incorporation and settling into the receiving society.
The thesis also gathers the conflicts resulting from the disregard for municipal regulations in force regarding the public space, and the processes of negotiation derived from this type of disruptions.

Social violence, social healing : the merging of the political and the spiritual in Chicano/a literary productionLopez, Christina Garcia 02 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation argues that spiritual and religious worldviews (i.e. Mexican Catholicism, indigenous spiritualities, and popular religion) have historically intersected with social and political realities in the development of Mexican origin communities of the United States. More specifically, as creative writers from these communities have endeavored to express and represent Mexican American experience, they have consistently engaged these intersections of the spiritual and the material. While Chicano/a criticism has often overlooked, and in some ways dismissed, the significant role which spiritual and religious discourses have played in the political development of Mexican American communities, I examine how the works of creative writers pose important questions about the role of religious faith and spirituality in healing the wounds of social violence. By placing literary texts in conversation with scholarship from multiple disciplines, this project links literary narratives to their historical, social, and political frameworks, and ultimately endeavors to situate literary production as an expressive cultural product. Historical and regional in approach, the dissertation examines diverse literary narratives penned by writers of Mexican descent between the 1930s and the current decade. Selected textual pairings recall pivotal moments and relations in the history of Mexico, America, and their shared geographical borderlands. Through the lens of religion and spirituality, a broad array of social discourses emerges, including: gender and sexuality, landscape and memory, nation-formation, race and ethnicity, popular traditions, and material culture. / text

Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, nous nous sommes penchée sur la situation des familles immigrantes originaires du Maroc. En mobilisant les notions de solidarités familiales (Pitrou, 1978; Dandurand et Ouellette, 1992), de transnationalisme (Glick Schiller et al., 1992 et 1995) ainsi que les travaux sur les liens entre réseaux sociaux et modifications des rôles conjugaux, nous avons examiné l’impact de la migration sur l’organisation du foyer selon trois aspects : (1) la dynamique interne de la famille, (2) la redéfinition des rôles conjugaux et (3) le maintien des liens familiaux malgré la distance géographique. En nous appuyant sur six entretiens semi-directifs avec des couples marocains arrivés au Québec depuis au moins deux ans, nous avons pu constater la manière dont les liens familiaux et les solidarités sont réagencés pour pallier la distance et comment les liens amicaux accèdent à un nouveau statut et prennent une nouvelle fonction dans cette recomposition. / In what follows, we take a look at the situation of immigrant families’ native from Morocco. By mobilizing notions such as ‘family solidarities’ (Pitrou, 1978; Dandurand and Ouellette, 1992), transnationalism (Glick Schiller and al., 1992 and 1995) as well as the work on existing links between social networks and conjugal roles modifications, we examine the impact of migration on three aspects: (1) the family dynamics, (2) the conjugal role redefinition and (3) the preservation of family relations in spite of the geographical distance. On the basis of 6 semi-directed interviews with Moroccan couples established in Quebec for at least two years, we noticed how the family relations and solidarities are remodelled to mitigate the distance and how friendships take a whole new function.

La ricerca approfondisce il processo di costruzione di identità di genere ed etniche in migrazione, attraverso l’intreccio di più assi di rappresentazione delle proprie appartenenze: l’asse dell’etnia, del genere e della classe. L’approccio metodologico parte dalla ricerca-azione per proporre un modo di condurre ricerca impegnato, relazionale, emozionale, il cui scopo è promuovere individui e gruppi in logiche di empowerment sociali. Il metodo privilegiato è l’etnografia, svolta in contesto transnazionale, basata sulla costruzione di relazioni di fiducia e combinando metodi visuali, interviste biografie e ricerca tra pari per ricomporre il quadro multifaccettato dell’esperienza dei giovani migranti e raggiungere un’ampia gamma di attori impegnati, con ruoli diversi, nella realtà studiata.
L’esperienza migratoria dei giovani rom connette il Sud Ovest della Romania a Milano, attraverso dei circuiti e legami di parentela transnazionali. I giovani partecipanti nella ricerca sono coinvolti nello spazio delle economie della strada, praticano quotidianamente l’elemosina, la musica di strada o il borseggio. Alcune pratiche, nell’incontro tra gruppi in migrazione, si polarizzano in posizioni antitetiche, arrivano a simboleggiare la tradizione e a mediare la differenza tra i rom e i non-rom oppure tra gruppi diversi di rom. Tale lo statuto delle pratiche di genere associate alla verginità, ai matrimoni e al controllo dei corpi e della sessualità delle giovani ragazze. Attraverso il mantenimento della forte distinzione tra le traiettorie di genere, gruppi portatori di stigma rivendicano attributi identitari valorizzati: una sistemazione famigliare essenzialmente diversa, utilizzata discorsivamente per riproporre la differenza, in termini etnici e di statuto, nei confronti del gruppo “maggioritario”, e degli altri gruppi rom.
Giovani uomini e donne contestualizzano gli scenari, le stilistiche dell’esistenza, associate alla tradizione come all’“occidentalizzazione”, e separano le loro performance di genere tra i diversi spazi della loro vita in migrazione. Definiscono nuove appartenenze in grado di costruire identità valorizzate e ricompongono permanentemente il sistema di pratiche, in un continuo dialogo tra “noi” (i gruppi di appartenenza) e “io” (l’identità individuale). / The research is focused on the process of gender and ethnic identity construction in migration, on multiple axes that represent migrant’s belongings: ethnicity, gender, and class. The methodological approach is based on the action research perspective and proposes an engaged, emotional and relational way of doing research, in order to promote individuals and groups in social empowerment processes. The privileged method is ethnography, in a transnational context, based on building relationships of trust with participants and combining visual methods, biographical interviews, and peer research in order to narrate the complex picture of migrant youth experiences and to reach all the actors involved.
Young Roma’s migratory experience connects the South West of Romania to Milan, in transnational circuits and kinship networks. The participants are involved street economies: they beg, play music, or pickpocket on a daily basis. Some of the practices, in the encounters between groups in migration, come to symbolize tradition and mediate difference between Roma and non-Roma, or between different groups of Roma. Such are the practices related to the virginity of young girls, matrimonies and the control over the bodies and sexuality of young girls. By maintaining strong distinctions between gendered life paths, stigma afflicted groups reclaim valued identity attributes related to an essentially different family order, discursively used in order to re-state ethnic and status differences between “us”, the “majority” group, and other Roma groups.
Young men and women contextualize these scenarios, the traditional as well as occidental “stylistics of existence”, and separate their gendered performances in the various spaces of their migrant life. They define new belongings able to construct valued identities and permanently challenge the systems of practice, in a continuous dialogue between “us” (in-group) and “I” (individual identities).

Translocation and female subjectivities in four contemporary narratives : Kingston’s The woman warrior, Magona’s To my children’s children and Forced to grow and Hoffman’s Lost in translationJoss, Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Drawing on theories of gender and subjectivity, this thesis explores the way in which
constructions of modernity as well as tradition are mapped onto geographical localities and thus
expressed through gender acts. The female protagonists in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman
Warrior, Sindiwe Magona’s To My Children’s Children and Forced to Grow, as well as Eva
Hoffman’s Lost in Translation undergo either transnational translocation or imagined
translocation where they straddle multiple cultural contexts concurrently. The role of globalism
and modernity amplifies the female’s ambiguous position and therefore challenges her gender
identity as she takes on additional gender characteristics. This challenge, a result of translocation,
causes both the individual and collective nature of the subject to be emphasised and placed in
multiple cultures concurrently. The female’s subjectivity is under much tension as the cultures
she immerses herself in interlace but also clash. As a result of this, her sense of self is constantly
in flux as she attempts to achieve stability and coherence. This sense of a gendered, stable and
located self will, I argue, both dissipate and transmutate upon undergoing physical or imagined
translocation.
In addition, this thesis examines the manner in which globalism allows for the dissolving of
boundaries and explores the extent to which the ambiguous position these female protagonists
occupy enables them to reformulate and refashion their gender identity as well as write
themselves away from the marginalised positions they inhabit. I will further explore how female
subjects are compelled to take on additional feminine or masculine attributes upon translocation,
seeming to become androgynous in the reformulation of their gender identity for a certain period
of time. I will argue that protagonists supplement their gender in order to obtain a sense of
belonging in a specific cultural context which requires this alteration of gender, and argue that
this is also a means by which they liberate themselves from the marginal positions they occupy
in their ethnic culture where sexism and prejudice are prevalent. However, I will demonstrate
that modernity does not only provide them with liberation and autonomy, but that simultaneously
it is also restrictive on the subject’s gender identity. Finally, this thesis explores whether the
female protagonists are able to use their ambiguous positioning strategically in order to generate coherence of the self yet, concurrently, maintain fluidity between multiple cultural boundaries of the self. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie verhandeling gebruik geslags- en subjektiwiteitsteorieë om ondersoek in te stel na die

in 'n etniese kultuur, waar seksisme en vooroordeel gedy, bevind. Nietemin wil ek ook aantoon
dat moderniteit nie bloot net bevryding en selfstandigheid aan die vroulike protagoniste bied nie, maar dat dit ook tegelykertyd beperkings op die subjek se geslagsidentiteit plaas. Die uitkoms
van hierdie tesis is om te bepaal of die vroulike protagoniste in staat is tot die strategiese gebruik
van hul dubbelsinnige posisionering, wat koherensie van die self sal meebring, en tog
terselfdertyd vloeibaarheid tussen verskillende kulture sal behou.
