Север глазами женщин: современный западный травелог об Арктике (на материале книг Гретель Эрлих «In the Empire of Ice» и Сары Уилер «The Magnetic North») : магистерская диссертация / The North through the eyes of women: a modern western travelogue about the Arctic (based on the books by Gretel Ehrlich "In the Empire of Ice" and Sarah Wheeler "The Magnetic North")

Н., Akhmetshina, A. N. January 2021 (has links)
Материалом для работы послужили произведения Гретель Эрлих ‘In the Empire of Ice: Encounters in a Changing Landscape’ (2010) и Сары Уилер ‘The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic’ (2009). / The work is devoted to the study of the features of conducting travelogues dedicated to the journey of women writers in the Arctic region. The material for the thesis was the works of Gretel Ehrlich ‘In the Empire of Ice: Encounters in a Changing Landscape’ (2010) and Sarah Wheeler ‘The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic’ (2009). The first chapter reviews questions related to the interpretation of the concept of "travelogue", and a detailed description of its genre and language characteristics is provided. The main directions in the study of the concept of "narrative strategy" and "narrative persona" are also considered, the image of the Arctic that has developed in the works of various scientists and travelers is studied. The second chapter of the work examines the features of travelogues authored by Gretel Ehrlich and Sarah Wheeler, which includes an analysis of the problems and topics that were voiced by the writers themselves in the text. After that, each of the problems presented in the works is considered in more detail. The identification of specific features of writing a work in the genre of literary travel, covering aspects of the author's trip to the Arctic region, is the basis on which the key aspects of the study were built. The results of the work can be used in other studies in the field of travel literature and the image of the Arctic, for the development of courses in literary studies and modern Western literature.

[en] MODERNIST JOURNEYS: EUROPE AND BRAZIL FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ANTÓNIO DE ALCÂNTARA MACHADO, BLAISE CENDRARS AND OSWALD DE ANDRADE / [fr] VOYAGES MODERNISTES: L EUROPE ET LE BRÉSIL DANS LA PERSPECTIVE DE ANTÓNIO DE ALCÂNTARA MACHADO, BLAISE CENDRARS ET OSWALD DE ANDRADE / [pt] VIAGENS MODERNISTAS: EUROPA E BRASIL SOB A ÓTICA DE ANTÓNIO DE ALCÂNTARA MACHADO, BLAISE CENDRARS E OSWALD DE ANDRADE

FREDERICO SPADA SILVA 23 August 2019 (has links)
[en] Modernist Journeys: Europe and Brazil from the Perspective of António de Alcântara Machado, Blaise Cendrars and Oswald de Andrade is a thesis that starts from the comparative reading of three literary works published during the 1920s, Pathé-Baby (1926) by António de Alcântara Machado; Pau Brasil (1925), by Oswald de Andrade; and Feuilles de route (first divided in three parts, edited between 1924 and 1928, Le Formose,São Paulo and Inédites, and later collected by the author in 1944), by Blaise Cendrars (Swiss writer of French-speaking expression). Having as its premise three thematic axes that approximate such works – namely, the historical vanguards, the journey and the traveling author s point of view –, the thesis points out how the travel literature and the look on the other have changed with the advent of the vanguards and is thus structured on the basis of three main questions raised by the reading of the literary corpus. Firstly, it investigates to what extent these texts contribute to the solidification of the Brazilian modernist project, by bringing poetry and travel chronicles to the vanguard scene, eminently urban. It then elucidates the ways in which the dialogue between the European modernity witnessed by Alcântara Machado – and brought to us by Blaise Cendrars – and the Brazilian colonial past that Oswald reveals in his anthropophagic ritual of building the Brazilian artistic vanguard, is elucidated. Finally, it analyzes the extent to which one can consider Pau Brasil and Feuilles de route mirrored, symmetrical works, in which the landscape and the history of Brazil guide the eyes and the pen of both poets, allowing them to read them as continuous works, as a kind of poetic guide of a journey that, starting from Europe, enters Brazil and returns to it. Moreover, since such a reading is made in light of both theories on travel literature and cultural studies, other aspects such as discourses of identity and otherness, cosmopolitanism, urban experience, and intermediality are also discussed.

These three distinct literary forms are connected with historiographic writings, for Castro Soromenho and Pepetela appropriate Henrique de Carvalho text to elaborate their central plots which focus the space of Lunda. Having in mind that space potentializes the three narratives, in this study we will take into consideration that \"The literary form cannot be understood separate from the content, and neither is it independent from the nature of the subject and the proceedings which are conditioned by this same content. Form depends on the content, and also on the particular aspects of the subject and on the elaboration it implies.\"* (Bakhtin, M. 1992, p.206)

Imaginative appropriation : confronting otherness through the female body in the works of Cesare Pavese and Italo Calvino

Abell, Lynn Valerie 26 July 2011 (has links)
This report examines the ways in which Cesare Pavese and Italo Calvino use images of the foreign woman as other. Specifically, both authors inscribe foreign territories onto the bodies of their female characters in order to confront complex cultural differences. Italy is the site of this gendered inscription in Pavese’s Il carcere, while various real and imagined foreign lands are made female in Calvino’s Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore and Le città invisibili. In Pavese’s novella, the satyr-like Concia and the overly maternal Elena are embodiments of Southern and Northern Italy, respectively, and the failure of the protagonist to form a relationship with either woman represents his failure to assimilate into the mezzogiorno and his simultaneous rejection of northern society. In Calvino’s two works, female characters and attributes are consciously used to embody various foreign countries so that the protagonists may grasp the unknown, both physically and psychologically. By linking woman and terrain, Pavese and Calvino attempt to dominate distant lands, which are otherwise enigmatic and incomprehensible, in the typical Orientalist fashion. / text

Soares Neta, Maria Angelina 28 February 2011 (has links)
This work aims to show the importance of traveler s reports, in the construction of a speech referring to the Pagan Greek society as a reference to the Christian understanding of otherness tupinambá. Thus, the image of tupinambá will be analyzed, and compared to the warriors of antiquity, passing on to the construction sites of the Indian war from models of other pagan universes related to the Christianity European family of five hundred. We will address the operation of travel literature as a model of writing, to speak of the unknown. The representations of war from their canons in the traditions of ancient epic and historiography will be analyzed, considering it with examples of Hellenism from five hundred.

The ballet's two bodies : the imaginary of theatrical dance in European literature and iconography : 1830-1870

Jarrasse, Bénédicte 28 November 2014 (has links)
Around 1830, Romanticism prevails on theatre stages. The new perspective on performance as a whole leads to a new perception of ballet. However, ballet struggles to assert its specificity and in the battle of words that unfolds, the ballerina, rather than the ballet, becomes the main focus onstage. The ballerina cristallizes the duality that is key to the Romantic vision. She thus finds herself at the heart of a campaign to elevate her to the status of legend, which is also a way for ballet to gain recognition. The narrative of ballet, from this point onwards, has to rely on a mythography. What is ultimately at stake is the definition of the Romantic dancing body. The mythologizing process creates a chaste body : the glorious dancing body. However, this metaphorical body is but the antithesis of another one : the earthy dancing body. Finally, it is backstage in the theatre that the dancing body is unveiled at work, frail and in pain, forever the price to pay for enchantment.

The Grande-Chartreuse monastery (French Alps) and the Qadisha valley - forest of Cedars of God (Northern Lebanon)

Pasquier, Justine 09 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to analyse and understand relationships between religious heritage and mountain protected areas (natural heritage). This research highlights the persistent boundaries between natural and cultural heritage and the meaning of the sacred in the heritage process. The meaning of “religious spaces, places and edifices” and the relationships between heritage / society / mountain areas and granting of heritage status have been studied. Recently, Natural Parks develop new missions and are interested by the “cultural landscape” concept developed by international authorise (e.g. UNESCO). What are the meaning and the significance of cultural and religious heritage in mountain protected areas? The studied areas are the Grande-Chartreuse monastery (French Alps), the Qadisha valley and the Forest of cedars of God (Northern Lebanon). Qualitative methodology has been chosen for this research, such as chronosystemic approach, textual analysis (tourist documents and travel books) and analysis of collected data (legislations, interviews, government reports, fieldwork, maps, etc.).

The ends of travel : space, rhetoric and identity in Peter Fleming’s writings

Burcea, Horatiu 08 December 2017 (has links)
The ends of travel in Peter Fleming’s works are seen as declines, lines of rupture, outcomes, driving principles and goals. Three paths are explored to understand these ends. The first postulates an anaesthetic intention on the part of the author: the purpose of denying his aesthetic experience and at the same time of seeking extreme sensation as an anesthetic, as palliation, reproduction and transfer of traumatic experience. The second focuses on his use of rhetorical art to reproduce and, at the same time, to play with the conventions and expectations of the reader. His use of reverse psychology allows the creation of a broad spectrum of interpretations and the projection of his identity in a protean manner. Finally, the third aims at analyzing the dunamic aspects of his narratives – a neologism referring to the sphere of potentiality. This model allows the literary and anthropological analysis of the potential alternatives contemplated, suggested and narrated by the author, one that is meant to complement the study of his actual itineraries and discourses. Authorial identity is defined in this context as an intermediate, trans-world and heterotopic space which lies between what is and everything that could be.
