Språkutveckling hos nyanlända elever på fritidshemmet : En kvalitativ undersökning om fritidshemslärarens arbete med nyanländas språkutveckling / Language development in newly arrived students at the after school careMikaelsson, Julia, Sultana, Sharmin January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative survey is to create a deeper understanding of the school-age educare in Swedish schools, the language development for newly arrived students and what challenges there are, as well as how school-age educare teachers collaborate with guardians and other people in the school to be able to contribute to the language development of newly arrived students. We interviewed four school-age educare teachers from schools in the greater Stockholm area and analyzed the results from a social constructionist perspective and previous research in this area. The results from our study indicate that school-age educare teachers work with newly arrived students' language development in different ways, but there are shortcomings in terms of strategies, tools, methods, and processes. There is a need for skills development to improve this work. In addition, good collaboration between the staff and guardians is essential to achieve better results. Since newly arrived students have different needs and backgrounds, it is important to take this into account and strive for the right conditions so that a safe, inclusive social environment can be created. The school needs to work to find solutions for competence development and improved cooperation in their operations. A fascinating future research area focusing on the language development of newly arrived students is regarding tools, training, and frameworks for after-school teachers. It is about how modern digital tools such as Google Translate and AI services can support after-school teachers in creating a more inclusive learning environment.

"Socialtjänsten är som våra föräldrar" : En studie om den interkulturella kommunikationen mellan nyanlända och socialtjänsten / "Social services are like our parents" : A study on the intercultural communication between newcomers and socialservicesNgwiki, Nikita, Marthin, Stella January 2022 (has links)
We have done a study that deals with the intercultural communication between newcomers and social services. Sweden receives 5,000 quota refugees every year and segregation has for a long time increased, and the gaps have become larger. There has also been an online disinformation campaign where Swedish social services are accused of taking Muslim children into care. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate newcomers' communication with social services and the meaning of the intercultural encounter. With this, we want to increase knowledge to promote the intercultural meeting and integration. To achieve the purpose, qualitative interviews were conducted where seven new arrivals were given the opportunity to share their experiences of communication with social services. Through our qualitative interviews, the study's questions have been answered. These are about how communication with social services is perceived and what culture means in the meeting with social services. The empirical data has been processed through thematic analysis and five themes that have been analysed based on previous research and from a sociological, psychological, and intercultural perspective. The results show that, according to the respondents, culture does not have a great importance in communication with social services. Many feel that adaptation to Swedish culture is difficult and do not experience any understanding from social services about this. All respondents have no expectations but wish the social services to possess more intercultural competence. When we analysed the results, we came to the conclusion that the first time in Sweden is governed by meeting basic needs such as getting in safety and that this may be one reason why culture initially does not have such a significance for newcomers in communication with social services. We could also see from an intercultural perspective that there are shortcomings in the intercultural communication between newcomers and social services, but that the respondents paid little or no importance to it.

Newly arrived students in English education : A study of difficulties encountered by students learning English as an L3Ali, Shadan January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties newly arrived students encounter when they learn English, both from the perspective of students and of teachers, and how these difficulties materialise in the classroom. The study was carried out through interviews with teachers and newly arrived immigrant students on the language introductory program at an upper secondary school. Interviews were used to investigate teachers' and students' experiences and attitudes. The results show that the most significant difficulties the students encounter occur in connection with listening comprehension, and these appear when the students are tested in hearing comprehension. Important factors that influence students’ listening skills are, among other things, that the students learn two languages simultaneously, and also that they have not developed strategies for listening comprehension. It also emerged that both teachers and students use tools such as pictures in order to facilitate learning. Students also use Google to translate, to some extent. When examining both teachers' and students' responses, it was revealed that they have a negative attitude to learning Swedish and English simultaneously. This is explained by the fact that they lose focus, and everything becomes confusing. In conclusion, the result shows that there are no advantages to having newly arrived students learn two languages at the same time. According to the participating teachers, the students must be well-grounded in the Swedish language before they start with English.

The essay aims to highlight the newly arrived immigrant students’ experience of social integration and social security in the Swedish school system, which is important for their further language and learning development. This essay aims to see it from the student's perspective. The main question in this essay is: What factors seem to matter the most for the newly arrived immigrant students in their language and learning skills, and what does the students themselves think about the issue? The study is based on a qualitative research method in the form of interviews and observations conducted in a multicultural school for a period of two weeks. Three newly-arrived students are in this essay being observed while they are attending between two different classrooms: the so-called preparation classroom and the ordinary classroom. This essay aims to highlight a newly arrived student's development from a socio-cultural perspective. The results show that the newly arrived students felt more emotionally secure while attending the preparation classrooms, and while attending the ordinary classrooms they felt more inadequate.
