Villarroel, Marina 12 1900 (has links)
“Needless to say my experience of translating constitutes the core of my general relationship with translation. I am a translation studies’ theorist because primarily I am a translator” (Berman…p. 16, my translation). Antoine Berman’s translation theory is rooted in his practice. Even though his name is irreversibly linked to the field of translation studies and his ideas have caused numerous debates, few researchers have studied the relation between his theory and practice. This thesis attempts to fill that gap through an analysis of the French translation of Roberto Arlt’s El juguete rabioso by Isabelle and Antoine Berman. It explores how Antoine Berman’s translation practice and theory feed from each other. The first chapter recounts the development of Antoine Berman: his work as a translator, his influences, his theory of translation and its impact, as well as the criticism addressed towards it. In chapter 2, we discover Roberto Arlt and his work in order to fully understand the problematic points of its translation. Following Antoine Berman’s method, chapter 3 analyses the only French translation of El juguete rabioso published in 1984. It concentrates on two particular elements of the text: the diverse discursive registers, including the use of Argentine sociolects, and their lexical richness. In conclusion, the study shows that Le jouet enragé carries the flaws (défectivité) inherent in any introductory translation. Too attached to linguistic conventions, this first version timidly recreates the arrative diversity of the original. Thus, it could be suggested that Antoine Berman’s theories, and more specifically his list of “deforming tendencies”, reflect in part, and, above all, the limits and difficulties that he encountered in the exercise of his practice.

To Destroy or to Preserve: Urban Renewal and the Legal Foundation of Historic District Zoning

Tarne, Andrew 01 January 2014 (has links)
Historic preservation and urban renewal are often thought to be polar opposites. Where one seeks to preserve, the other generally seeks to destroy in order to rebuild. While the programs appear on the surface to be in opposition, this Thesis seeks to demonstrate that there is a fundamental connection between the underlying legal principles of historic zoning and urban renewal. To that end, the jurisprudence involving historic zoning and aesthetic regulations before and after the seminal urban renewal case of Berman v. Parker has been collected and analyzed. This analysis revealed that courts were hesitant to support aesthetic, and by extension would have been unlikely to support historic zoning, prior to the Supreme Court’s validation of urban renewal programs in Berman. For example, in 1949 the Supreme Court of Massachusetts stated that specifically stated that a zoning regulation cannot be enacted solely to preserve the beauty of a community. In Berman, however, the United States Supreme Court justified urban renewal on the basis that governments should be able to condemn and regulate property for the creation of a more attractive community. An analysis of the jurisprudence following Berman indicated that courts were more likely to uphold aesthetic or historic zoning ordinances. For example, in a 1955 opinion, the Supreme Court of Massachusetts cited Berman and stated that, because construction of aesthetically or historically incompatible structures could destroy the historic character of a town, historic zoning ordinances fell within the scope of the police power. In short, the cases identified by this Thesis ultimately indicated that Berman had an impact on the acceptance of aesthetic and historic zoning. Therefore, they suggest that the programs of historic zoning and urban renewal, while seemingly in opposition, share fundamental legal roots.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In light of the thought of Jacques Derrida (1930-2004) trace, of the deconstruction, and of our experience with the reading and the translating texts of the philosophy of the language, especially those of the German Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), we intend to presente some philosophical (etymological and philological) theses of Leibniz on the subject of the language’s nature that contributed to the formation of the Historical-comparative Linguistics and, from the Derrida’s point of view, to the logocentric theories of translation. Theories founded on the search for “the signification”, i.e., on a metaphysics of the language. To illustrate such considerations, supported by the theoretical and methodological foundations of the translator Antoine Berman (1942-1991), particularly in those developed in his La Traduction et la Lettre ou l’Alberge du lointain (2007), first, in order to explain the “letter’s system of deformation” that operates there, we will make the “analytical” of some passages of the first Brazilian translation of the work Nouveaux essais sur l’entendement humain, par l’auteur du système de l’harmonie préétablie (1765) – the first chapter of the book III, Des Mots, to be more specific –; after that, we will propose a second translation of the three initials chapters, or better, a “retranslation”. These are chapters in which Leibniz weaves important considerations about the “material” aspects of the nature of language.

Nilsson, Hugo January 2020 (has links)
Having a major success in France, the Swedish novelist Åsa Larsson has with her crime novels starring Rebecka Martinsson contributed to the intercultural comprehension between Sweden and France over the last 15 years. The first book in the Rebecka Martinsson saga, Solstorm, was translated into French in 2006 under the title Horreur Boréale and retranslated in 2020 under the title Les nouveaux prophètes. There are roughly two possible strategies of translation: foreignization (adaption to the translated language) and domestication (adaption to the target language). The hypothesis of Antione Berman states amongst others that translations move diachronically towards the strategy of foreignization. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the two translations of Solstorm, examining whether the hypothesis of Berman could be confirmed or rejected. The method used was choosing 28 extracts containing typical “Swedish” phenomena (for instance the cursing, the dialect and the Swedish gastronomy) from the original version and analysing their translation, respectively. Our analysis shows that a large majority of extracts are translated in a domesticating style, and no tendency towards an increased use of the foreignizing strategy over time could be observed. The hypothesis of Berman could then not be confirmed through this analysis, but further studies of the original version are needed to confirm the results.

Timmerensamhet och tegelhelvete : Om ensamhet och inre rörelse i Eyvind Johnsons Nu var det 1914 / Timber loneliness and brickworks hell : Loneliness and inner movement in Eyvind Johnson’s Nu var det 1914

Dandenell, Helena January 2022 (has links)

O'Nils, Rebecka January 2015 (has links)

Shrefler, Carmen Lara 05 1900 (has links)
The novel is one means by which writers can provide examples of the possibilities for women in patriarchal societies to seek greater independence. Sabina Berman (1955- ) and Silvia Molina (1946- ) are modern day Mexican novelists whose writings support the betterment of the female condition in this Latin American society. This study focuses on these two authors and describes and analyzes several of their female protagonists who can be characterized as being in search of their self-identity and self-realization. The novels of interest are La Bobe (2006) and La Mujer que Buceó Dentro del Corazón del Mundo (2010) by Sabina Berman and La Mañana Debe Seguir Gris (1977) and El Amor Que Me Juraste (1998) by Silvia Molina. The theoretical framework used to analyze these novels is based on The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and on the writings of the Mexican author Rosario Castellanos. These novels provide examples of how women can challenge patriarchal social norms in order to seek their identity as an individual and their self-realization. However, to do this, women must be willing to accept the risks and costs that may accompany this self-searching. By seeking identity women can satisfy their longings and desires, but at the same time this may also produce undesired results. Nevertheless, these novels show that women have the ability to seek their personal identity if they take the initiative to do so.

Elgenstierna, Saga January 2018 (has links)
