Synliggöra kvinnor : En studie om KvinnSams bidrag till genusforskningen / Making women visible : A study  of the library KvinnSam's contribution for further gender studies

Granberg, Mimmi January 2015 (has links)
This study aims to examine in which ways the library of KvinnSam in Gothenburg contributes to gender studies. I examined how the work of KvinnSam can be viewed as a feminist project, what the work understands to be about and challenges that the library meets. Qualitative interviews with two librarians working at KvinnSam were performed, along with a one day visit. As a theoretical framework I used feminist theory, which is used in the analysis. A summary of earlier research and their methods is presented. The research of this study exhibited that the library may have an important role to play for further gender studies, and also in documenting records of women´s history. It was also discovered that the library experiences challenges in regards to legitimacy, often having to defend its existence. I have come to the conclusion that KvinnSam makes women more visible, and can therefore be seen as a feminist project, which seems to be the main focus within the work of KvinnSam.

Skönlitteratur på akademiska bibliotek : En undersökning om skönlitteraturens funktion och dess förmedlingpå svenska högskole- och universitetsbibliotek / Fiction at academic libraries : An investigation into fiction collections and reading promotionat Swedish academic libraries.

Bakker, Barbara January 2014 (has links)
Swedish university libraries traditionally collect recreational readingmaterial only to support the teaching and research interests of theirinstitutions. However many university libraries hold a substantial yetunspecified collection of popular fiction. This thesis investigates theextent of these collections and examines academic librarians' viewsabout students' recreational reading in the academic context and theirattitudes towards the role of fiction and of readers' advisory inacademic libraries. The theoretical framework includes literature andresearch about the benefits of reading for pleasure, collections' rolesand readers' advisory strategies. The empirical material was gatheredthrough quantitative surveys sent to academic librarians in Sweden. The results show that academic librarians are positive about thebenefits of recreational reading for university students. However themajority of them do not believe that it is their responsibility to provideleisure reading material or promote extracurricular reading. Based onthe literature review, on the theoretical framework and on the researchfindings, recommendations are made with respect to further researchand readers' advisory strategies.

Taggningens funktioner i katalogen : Hur taggning används i svenska bibliotekskataloger / The functions of tags in the catalogue

Tingborn, Hanna January 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to find how and if tags are used in Swedish library catalogues. Two different library catalogues from two different vendors were studied. One is from the Swedish company Axiell and the other one is from Open Library Solution. The tags were gathered from twenty books that were tagged in both catalogues. The books were a mix of both adults and children’s literature, and these were also from different genres. The following questions are asked: What features are user tags in comparison with classical indexing? What types of books are the most tagged? The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on F.W Lancaster´s theory about indexing. The result of this bachelor thesis is that tags are mostly used to identify the content of the books and the most popular type of tags is those who describe the content of the book. They are also used to identify what the books are or are used for, as a prizewinning novel or in an activity at the library. The group of users who are using tagging the most seems to be fantasy readers and possibly the library staff. The bachelor thesis ends in a discussion if libraries can learn from them what makes tagging interesting for library patrons.

Bilder, genus och normer : En fallstudie av hur Halmstads bibliotek arbetar med webbpublicerade bilder på sin hemsida. / Images, gender and norms : A case study of how Halmstad Public Library is working with web published images on their homepage.

Söderling, Jessica, Vallin, Anna January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines how Halmstad Public Library is using photographs on their web page. In this case study with a gender and norm critical perspective we have conducted a visual semiotic analysis and also done a semi-structured qualitative interview. Little is currently known in the Library and Information Science field about the use of photographs on library web pages and how this affects the representation of library users. The result of the analysis shows that the photographs used on the web page in many cases enhancing gender roles and gender stereotypes such as portraying boys as being more active, and girls of being more passive. We also found that many of the photographs did not represent the specific activity it was supposed to be representing. Based on these results we have come to the conclusion that the subject of visual analysis of the visual material used on libraries web pages needs to be examined more. Libraries have to be more aware of in what way these can send visual messages to the users and how this represents the physical library itself.

Meröppet = merarbete? : Om bibliotekariers förändrade arbetsinnehåll, kompetenskrav och yrkesroll på det meröppna biblioteket / Staff-less = less work? : Changes in work content, competence requirements, and professional role for librarians working in staff-less libraries

Åhman Billing, Tina January 2014 (has links)
Since the opening of the first staff-less public library (meröppna biblioteket) in Sweden in 2009, the number of staff-less libraries has been growing at an increasing rate. Still, there has been little research published on this recent phenomenon in the Swedish library sector. The aim of this thesis is to fill a part of this gap by focusing on librarians employed at staff-less public libraries. The study targets their experiences with regard to changes in work content, competence requirements, and professional role. The findings are based on eight interviews conducted with ten librarians at staff-less libraries in six Swedish municipalities. The material has been analyzed using part of Wrzesniewski and Dutton’s job crafting model as the theoretical framework. In addition, Ellström’s concept of actual competence (rather than formal competence) and Ørom and Schreiber’s definition of librarians’ professional identities have been used to support analysis. The findings show that the introduction of staff-less opening hours impacts the librarians’ work content in terms of tasks, cognition, and patron interactions. This in turn makes room for librarians in staff-less libraries to develop existing or new competences. Changes in the professional role due to the introduction of the staff-less library are more difficult to identify. These changes seem to be triggered by developments in society rather than by changes at the local level.

När folkbibliotek blir ett kombinerat biblioteks och kulturhus. : En studie om förändring och förvandling / When the public library becomes a public library in the Culture Center : A study of change and transformation

Svensson, Catarina January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to study what happens to the librarian and it´s profession at the public library when it is developed or converted into a Library and Cultural center. This study take bearing on how the librarian experience the difference in working at a public library and a Library and Culture Center. The method used is a semi-structured qualitative interview, and the theoretical framework is Andrew Abbott's System of Profession. The material consists of interviews with five librarians who previously worked in a public library and subsequently in Library and Cultural Center. The findings of the study show that librarians have a positive attitude towards working in a Library and Culture Center and that they to some degree still work with traditional tasks. However, the work in Library and Culture Centers have changed in the sense that it consist of working with programs, e.g. music and author events. Additionally, public education and a closer collaboration with the end user. The study also revealed that the librarians believe in an increase need for more up-to-date knowledge on new technology as a consequence of the user’s new demands and wishes. Furthermore, adding various community services is part of the integration of public libraries and Library and Culture Centers, making it a large meeting-place for the local residents.

Biblioterapi eller personutvecklande läsning? : Stödgruppen som bokcirkel för vuxna barn till missbrukare / Bibliotherapy or personal development reading? : The support group as a bookreading circle for adult children of drug addicts

Fredriksson, Pernilla January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this Master’s Thesis is to find out whether bibliotherapy, in an unspokenform, is practiced in already existing group formations to be able to determine how practicalbibliotherapy can be seen in a Swedish context and thereby open the possibility for development. To fulfil this purpose I decided to do a case study on a nearby book reading circle for adultchildren of drug addicts. I made three qualitative interviews; two of the mentioned book readingcircle’s leaders and one participant/help leader. I used the following set of questions: What isincluded in the concept Bibliotherapy and how does that relate to practice? How has the bookreading circle examined in this case study proceeded, which methods were used and what kind ofliterature has been used and also what kind of effects did this reading circle have on itsparticipants. Can the library/librarian interact in any way in this type of external book readingcircles? I also studied theoretical work on bibliotherapy, as well as various theories on supportgroups and book reading circles, of which I presented a selection of in this thesis. Thistheoretical framework was the basis for my analysis of the result, which showed that theintention of the book reading circle had been consistent with its implementation; the methodsused were in line with the ones of the support groups’ standards and the literature they used wasnonfiction with a content directed especially towards the group’s main problem; the effects thebook reading activities had on the group participants were in line with how developmentalbibliotherapy is described being performed in a Swedish context , and finally; the informants’attitudes towards collaborating with a library/librarian were mainly positive. Thereby, all myquestions were answered and my conclusion is that this case study represents a number of othersupport groups/book reading circles and there would be a mutual benefit if a future collaborationwith the library was established.

Schh! : En analys av den offentliga debatten kring tystnad på bibliotek. / Hush! : An analyses of the public debate regarding silence in libraries.

Pehrsson, Kristian, Erlandsson, Hanna January 2018 (has links)
Hush! – An analyses of the public debate regarding silence in libraries. This essay is based on the perception of a change in the library soundscape. Our purpose is to identify the prevailing discourses in the public debate regarding silence in libraries. To achieve this, we posed three questions. What part does silence play in the public debate about silence in the libraries? What are the discourses that can be identified in this debate?  What is the debater’s opinion of the ambition of the library to become a third space? To answer these questions, we analysed seventeen articles from the Swedish news, by applying a discourse analytic model - based on a model created for this context by Åse Hedemark. The articles were written between 2006 and 2018 and we chose this timeframe due to the fact that the technological development of cellular phones etc, thrived in this period. The results show that there is a discord between the libraries and the participants in the public debate and that a number of discourses have been identified. We have identified the main issue of the debate as the transcendence of the library from a silent temple full of books, to an open space for informal encounters and conversations.
