Avfallshanteringen i SödraHammarbyhamnen : En studie om möjligheter till förändring av mänskligt beteende beträffande utsorteringen av matavfall / The Waste Disposal in “Södra Hammarbyhamnen”

Yvell, Malin, El Malla, Dana January 2017 (has links)
“Hammarby Sjöstad” was one of the first districts of Stockholm constructed withconsiderations taken to become more environmentally sustainable. Despite the grand visionsfor the project, some elements developed to be more successful than others. One element thatcould be improved upon, is the waste disposal system of the district. This thesis focuses on“Södra Hammarbyhamnen” which utilizes a stationary vacuum system with disposal insertionin connection to the residences. The neighborhood fulfils all the prerequisites for a successfulwaste disposal system, however, these aren’t utilized to capacity. In 2015, the averageresident in central Stockholm sorted approximately 17 kilos of food waste, whilst thecorresponding figure in “Hammarby Sjöstad” was only 13 kilos. As households make up mostof the produced food waste, this report is delimited to focus on households. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify obstacles that hamper the sorting of foodwaste in “Södra Hammarbyhamnen”. Furthermore, the report covers a concretization of howto inform residents with the intention of increasing waste separation. In combination with ananalysis on human habits, an empirical study was carried out, consisting of surveys andinterviews. Finally, a mapping of the aforementioned obstacles that obstruct waste separationhave been pinpointed in the gathered results. The results indicate that residents perceive a lackof continuity in the flow of information, described by theory as fundamental to create newhabits. Furthermore, it became clear that the accessibility of waste disposal bags can beimproved. Regardless of location, residents felt that the distance to the nearest waste bagdispensary was too long. This study concludes that improvement efforts should conform tothe apophthegm “It should be easy to do it right” to facilitate waste separation of food waste.

A qualitative interview study that explores existing structures and attitudes within a company and one of their supply chainsregarding the opportunities and challenges of internal carbon pricing

Emilson, Malin January 2022 (has links)
Companies are expected to reduce their environmental footprint and undertake climate action to a larger extent than ever before. Many actors have long-term visions and strategies that target sustainability, however closing the gap between these goals to operational and tactical decision-making has been proven to be a struggle. One tool that can potentially connect visions, strategies and decision-making is carbon pricing. Carbon pricing aims to convert greenhouse gas emission to a monetary value, which can then be used to understand environmental impact and translate the consequences of not considering footprint to common business language. The study aims to analyze whether carbon pricing as a tool contributes to sustainable business, and study within which supply chain it is most relevant to start an implementation based on a company’s and its suppliers’ existing structures and attitudes. The study also intends to investigate how carbon pricing can be established and why it would be relevant based on the potential impact the tool can have on the company and the supply chain. Discoveries within the study have led to an understanding that carbon pricing as a tool has the potential to contribute to sustainable business by highlighting carbon footprints and the costs associated with emissions, which can influence decision making regarding the choice of suppliers, work towards goal fulfillment, and how and where investments should be done. The tool is most relevant to study within the supply chains that emit the most greenhouse gases, as this is where there is most room for improvement. Carbon pricing can be designed and implemented in several different ways, which is considered both a strength and a weakness with the tool. The main possibilities with the tool are behavioral changes, effective decision making and competitive advantages. The tool’s main obstacles are the lack of standardization and the lack of competence, as well as the challenge of how the tool should be designed in an efficient manner. In the realization of an implementation, more knowledge about the tool is needed, both when it comes to the possibilities but also when it comes to the obstacles and limitations with the tool.

Transformational thirdspace : Drawing from agora and permaculture / Transformerande tredje platsen : Med inspiration från agora och permakultur

Karbonk, Sydney, Sörbom, Emma January 2023 (has links)
Renewing the current thirdspace model is a critical step towards creating a sustainable future for cities. A thirdspace must possess specific qualities that go beyond simply creating conversation and building community. It must foster meaningful dialogue that inspires civic mobilization and drives action toward sustainability. Mobilization is seen as the antithesis to the number one problem in thirdspaces today: capitalist consumerism. In order for a thirdspace to be transformational, it must allow for the creation of strong and resilient networks within communities - both socially and ecologically. This project explores the challenge of renewing the thirdspace model in order to create urban transformation. By first, analyzing the transformation of thirdspaces in the site of Hägerstensåsen, Midsommarkransen, and Telefonplan; identifying the key opportunities and challenges posed by the context towards thirdspaces; and accumulating situated knowledges, we identified 3 key principles of transformation leading us into strategies to be applied in the site. In doing so, we challenge the dominant consumption patterns and lifestyles by proposing a thirdspace future where kinship with nature co-exists with kinship with community through a network of thirdspaces that are spatially designed and programmatically specific to expand from creating conversation and community into creating meaningful dialogue that activates civic mobilization.

Reverse logistics activities in manufacturing firms in the Vaal Triangle area

Seeku, T. V. 01 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Department of Logistics Management, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influence of reverse logistics practices on environmental sustainability and business performance in manufacturing firms in the Vaal Triangle Region. The study employed a quantitative research method that used a survey questionnaire to gather data from supply chain professionals operating in the manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The survey was self-administered to 350 randomly selected respondents who were mainly supply chain professionals drawn from various manufacturing firms in the Vaal Triangle region. Despite the large number of respondents, only 201 questionnaires were usable, which represented a response rate of 57 per cent. Data obtained were analysed using SPSS 25.0 in which descriptive statistics were analysed to assess the demographic characteristics of the respondents. An analysis of mean scores was performed to establish the perceptions of supply chain professionals toward the levels of the constructs in manufacturing firms. Besides, the study made use of correlation and regression analyses to examine the causal relationships between reverse logistics practices on environmental sustainability and business performance. The results of the study show that the identified reserve logistics practices (repairs, remanufacturing, recycle, recondition and disposal) were insignificantly correlated to environmental sustainability. However, environmental sustainability was significantly correlated to the two sub-dimensions of business performance, namely, sales and profit. Likewise, in the regression analysis, all reverse logistics components were statistically insignificant, whereas environmental sustainability significantly influenced both profits and sales. The study thus offered a contrasting perspective from the general findings that have found reverse logistics to be a significant contributor to sustainability initiatives. However, the study confirms the importance of environmental sustainability as a predictor of business performance in manufacturing firms.

Axelsson, Jasna January 2023 (has links)
Swedish authorities advocate that procurement carried out by public authorities, regions and municipalities should contain requirements that deal with environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Public procurement is thereforconsidered an important tool that promotes sustainable development.Research reports and various national authority reports all point to the fact that public procurement has the potential to become more sustainable than it is today and some of the biggest identified obstacles are a lack of knowledge in the aspects of sustainability and a lack of structured work within organizations. To identify the potential public procurement has in the work towards a sustainable society and to contribute to the global sustainability goals in Agenda 2030, this study has reviewed procurement documents within the municipality of Boden, conducted workshops on the theme of sustainable procurement and made qualified assessments of the current situation, and potential for sustainable procurement in the municipality using the tool HållbarhetssolenTM. The purpose of the review and assessments was to see how the municipality works with environmental and social sustainability and to determine what potential the municipality has for improvement in these areas. The result shows that the procurement process can be seen as an essential part of sustainability work at both local and national level. By promotingsustainability requirements and innovation forward in public procurement, organizations and authorities contribute to environmental, social, and economic sustainable development and goal fulfilment of Agenda 2030 / <p>2023-06-02</p>

Verksamhetsstyrning för miljömässig hållbarhet : Hur medelstora företag integrerar miljömässig hållbarhet i verksamhetsstyrningen / Management control for environmental sustainability : How medium-sized enterprises integrate environmental sustainability into their management control

Dahl, Jacob, Persson, Fanny, Ridemar, Markus January 2023 (has links)
Background and problem: The concept of sustainability has gained increased attention over the recent years due to climate change and consumption of natural resources. The rising trend of sustainability results in more strict requirements and expectations from stakeholders and society. In order to lead an organization in the right direction both formal and informal controls are required. With a view to follow the development and be competitive, an understanding of the integration of environmental sustainability into the management control is beneficial. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify how medium-sized enterprises integrate environmental sustainability into their management control. The study aims to create an understanding of what controls are frequently used and the research question is based on the individual views on environmental sustainability of the respondents.  Method: This study is based on qualitative research and it applies a abductive approach and a comparative design. Data was collected from ten medium-sized enterprises through semi-structured interviews with knowledgeable persons within the area of environmental sustainability. The theoretical frame of reference has been written with the support of scientific articles, course literature and relevant web pages. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that half of the medium-sized enterprises in the sample have a simply developed management control system regarding the integration of environmental sustainability, which implies that both the formal and informal controls are developed in a basic manner. The remaining half of the sample consists of companies with culture-based management control, meaning that the informal controls are strongly developed, while the formal controls are less advanced. In the long term, medium-sized enterprises are likely to move towards applying both strong formal and informal controls to integrate environmental sustainability.

Elite Athletes’ Travel Behaviour to/from Sport Events : A Case Study of Biathlon

Lerho, Marie January 2024 (has links)
This thesis analyses how elite athletes travel to/from sport events and which barriers prevent them from engaging in a more sustainable travel behaviour. For this purpose, unstructured interviews with elite athletes were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding about travel experiences and decision-making from elite athletes’ perspective. The sport of biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting, was used as a case study. The analysis revealed that biathletes engage in frequent and extensive travelling, and that their most-used modes of transportation are road and air transportation. Travel arrangements were found to be usually taken care of by national federations and not by biathletes themselves. Moreover, the analysis demonstrated that while biathletes generally seem to be concerned about the environment, their environmental concern does not seem to translate into pro-environmental travel behaviour, which can be explained by the fact that sustainable transportation represents a high-cost situation. Furthermore, some barriers were found to prevent elite athletes from travelling more sustainably. The barriers are related to individuality (other priorities – performance), responsibility (not athletes’ responsibility) and practicality (national regulations regarding rifle transport in public transportation (PT)). However, many barriers were found to lie on a continuum between individuality and practicality. The most important of these barriers include travel time, equipment, exposure to other people or inconvenient PT system. Based on the findings, it was recommended to optimize schedules, which was found to be to be overall highly appreciated by biathletes. Some other recommendations include, for example, reservation of train compartments and/or special buses for biathletes and teams, communal equipment transportation between competition venues, vehicle provision at venues, or clear and updated information about regulations regarding rifle transport. These and other recommendations are believed to help biathletes to overcome some of their barriers and, thereby, encourage a more sustainable travel behaviour. Thereby, it is hoped that the knowledge gained in this thesis can help sport organizations and athletes to reduce the emissions from travelling to/from sport events. / <p>2024-01-19</p>

Skanska’s Deep Green Journey; How can the Building Industry Push Sustainability in Practice: A Case Study of Skanska’s Color Palette™

Nabholz, Timothy January 2012 (has links)
The environmental impacts that will affect earth due to continued population growth are staggering. They can be seen through the depletion of finite resources, increased pollution, and climate change. These environmental fluctuations will no doubt have a significant impact on how 21st century societies are designed. In order to reduce the potential catastrophes that these environmental issues will bring forth, societies must learn to adapt and accept new methods of building their cities. This paper delves into how the building industry can help address the issues that the world is facing environmentally. The goal of the study is to develop an understanding of how the building industry can push sustainable building practices. It looks at how Skanska AB, the largest Nordic building company, has focused their internal strategies to push towards sustainable building practices. This paper hopes to determine how with the help an internal rating tool, a global organization can reduce their environmental impacts. Through the examination of Skanska’s Color Palette™, key learnings were gained that could be used to reveal how private corporations can make good business sense out of sustainability. The paper also illustrate how Skanska has identified gaps between traditional certification tools and goals of true sustainability, and what that means for the built environment. The paper presents a case study of Skanska’s Color Palette™ as a key aspect of the company’s environmental journey. It looks at how the company was able to repair their reputation and illustrates how they have proved that they are serious about their goal of pursuing a sustainable future. The study involved secondary analysis of both public and Skanska documents, theoretical analysis and 4 semi-structured interviews. The analysis proved that the Color Palette™ is a tool that has great value for private corporations and is something that should be studied by other organizations seeking to reduce their environmental impacts. However, it was clear that if the earth is to progress sustainably, public policy, markes and internal organizations will all have to work together.

Made in Sweden : en studie om modeföretags inställning till etablering av produktion i Sverige / Made in Sweden : a study of fashion companies' attitudes to establishing production in Sweden

Nilsson, Therese, Olsson, Annie January 2022 (has links)
The textile and fashion industry is known for its globalized value chain and the numerous negative environmental impacts it entails. Textile production in Sweden was common until the 1970 ´s, when the production moved to other countries to achieve cost benefits. Today, over 80% of the clothing and home textiles that are consumed in Sweden, is produced in countries not belonging to the European Union. Aside from long transport distances, these countries often have a lack of environmental legislation. This study examines experts in the textile and fashion industry, fashion companies and a manufacturing company with the help of qualitative semi-structured interviews to identify fashion companies' attitude to establishing part of their production in Sweden. In addition to this, the study aims to investigate the conditions required for production in Sweden to be economically and environmentally sustainable, in order to shed light on, and contribute to, knowledge about the conditions required to enable Swedish production in the fashion industry. The results of the study identify economic- and production capacity as two of the biggest challenges in relation to Swedish-produced fashion. Concurrently, several economic- and environmental aspects, technical development and automation are highlighted as opportunities by both experts, fashion companies and the manufacturing company. The study's respondents consistently show a positive attitude towards Swedish production, yet attention is drawn to a wait-and-see attitude among the fashion companies towards establishing part of their production in Sweden.
