On-site Information Findability: Towards an integrative view

Srejber, Zdenek, van Blanken, Rients Wiebren Johannes January 2020 (has links)
A major component of the internet are websites which each have their information architecture, but more importantly, findability. This thesis focusses on the topic of findability, which is defined by Morville as “The quality of being locatable or navigable” (Morville, 2005, p. 4). Findability has become more crucial due to an increasing amount of information and time people spent on searching and gathering information. This motivation has led to the aim of investigating findability through insights into, and a delineation of, two complementary perspectives: information architecture and social informatics. Empirical evidence was collected through semi-structured interviews with design practitioners, and a literature review was conducted to provide an integrated view of findability. The STIN-model and berry-picking model provide a frame of reference which designers can use to improve the findability of their digital platforms. The most predominant suggestions based on the empirical evidence are as follows. Firstly, designers should remember that they are problem solvers and should always use methods appropriate to the problem that needs to be resolved. Secondly, designers should start with problem analysis, which should combine qualitative and quantitative methods to reach the optimal results with regards to user research. Finally, do not reinvent the wheel, make use of already existing tools that incorporate upgradeability and reusability.

Enterprise Search Management Maturity : - A model for the assessment of an organization’s maturity level within enterprise search management / Att mogna inom styrning av enterprise search : - En modell för att utvärdera en organisations mognadinom styrning av enterprise search

Denbu Wilhelmsson, Felicia, Eriksson, Malin January 2013 (has links)
As organizations grow larger, so does the information base of the organization, and the need to findimportant information increases along with it. However, many organizations are neglecting theimportance of information. Enterprise search lets users search for information in multiple informationrepositories from one single application, without having to know where the information resides. The focalfirm of this research, Findwise AB, is a Swedish IT consultancy firm specialized in delivering searchsolutions to its customers. It has been shown that not many organizations have a strategy for their internalwork with enterprise search. Therefore, Findwise wants to be able to deliver enterprise search strategies toits customers. Such a strategy would facilitate the customers’ development of their internal enterprisesearch management. However, this requires the ability to define an organization’s current and future statewith regard to enterprise search management, something that, up until now has not been possible. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop an enterprise search management maturity (ESMM)model, which Findwise’s consultants can use for assessing an organization’s current state, as well aspossible future state within enterprise search management. Through an extensive literature study, incombination with an empirical study consisting of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, theESMM model was developed. The themes of the identified maturity levels of enterprise searchmanagement are; knowledge, management, priority, standardization, and sustainability. It is concludedthat the parameters to evaluate on each of these maturity levels are the three parameters information, technology, and user. Each of these parameters consists of three specific factors to evaluate, providingguidelines for what to look at in an assessment. This will enable Findwise to define an organization’scurrent and future state within enterprise search management, as well as enable organizations to gain themost benefit out of their enterprise search solution.

The impact of a discovery tool on library e-resources. : The Summon effect on Chalmers University of Technology’s Library.

Carlson, Lisa January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examine what happens with library e-resources after implementing the discovery tool Summon. Summon provides a Google-like experience and uses multiple facet options when users need to narrow their discovery. Observations of change in the libraries e-resources with regards to database searches, click-throughs in linkresolvers and full text downloads are examined through looking at earlier reports and statistics from libraries in America and England. This provides a way to compare with Chalmers University of Technology’s Library. This essay presents results that suggest that usage drop in database searches while full text downloads and click-throughs increase when Summon is implemented. Also discussed in the essay is the importance for libraries to continuous evaluate the use of their resources to keep up with their users needs and demands. / Program: Bibliotekarie

The exponential increase in the production of scientific data and information is directly associated with the evolution of digital information and communication technologies and, in view of this scenario, it is noticed the need for institutions to implement digital information environments that can bring them together, organize them, disseminate and preserve them. Institutional repositories, objects of study of this research, are potential environments for such actions; its implementation, however, must meet the information needs of its target audience, making it necessary to apply methods, techniques and attributes that promote the finding of scientific information. With the objective of verifying that institutional repositories have been implemented based on attributes that enable information to be found by information subjects, this study uses as reference the institutional repositories of the three state universities of the state of São Paulo - USP, UNESP and UNICAMP. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the four-pole method is used, which allows dynamicity and flexibility for the development of the study through its four poles: epistemological, theoretical, technical and morphological. The epistemological pole addressed the post-custodial paradigm of Information Science and Post-Phenomenology to support the study, epistemologically. The theoretical pole allowed the search for contributions related to the themes that permeate the research object, namely: Digital Repositories, with emphasis on Institutional Repositories, DSpace as technology for implementation, and Information Findability. The technical pole evidences the methodological procedures for carrying out the study: bibliographical research and literature review to address the epistemological and theoretical foundations mentioned, as well as applied research, which occurred in two phases, the first being the application of the "Checklist for evaluation of Information Finding in Institutional Repositories "in the institutional repositories of USP, UNESP and UNICAMP, through the observation technique, and the second refers to the application of tasks to the masters of the Graduate Programs in Education and Speech-Language Pathology of UNESP of Marília, from the eye-tracking technology, in the three repositories, being executed, along with the technique of verbal protocol and, later, interviews. The morphological pole is intended to present the results of the research, as well as to the proposed recommendations for the institutional repositories analyzed. From the evaluation with the checklist, the results revealed problems related to the attributes Folksonomy, Information Discovery and Accessibility and Usability, in the three repositories. In at least one of them, problems were observed with the attributes: Navigational Taxonomies, Mediation of Information Professionals and Mobility, Convergence and Ubiquity. Considering the limitations of this technique of data collection, it was not possible to evaluate the attributes of terminological control instruments, intentionality and mediation of computer scientists. In a second moment, it was possible to evaluate the attribute of Information Discovery with eye-tracking technology. After the evaluations, ten information retrieval recommendations were generated for institutional repositories. / CAPES: 1660180

Johansson, Hannes, Hartman, Jorunn January 2012 (has links)
Difficulties in finding relevant information online cause significant problems for users. The internet houses complex information environments with large quantities of data in which users need more assistance in order to find relevant information. There are multiple examples of quantitative studies on user behavior when finding information but a lack of qualitative research in the field. This study investigates user behaviors with qualitative methods including six interviews and observations with users of the complex information environment Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). UCDP's interface has been evaluated through its perceived usefulness, findability and usability to identify information goals and how easily users find information. Personas and scenarios were created from the information found in the interviews and observations, which were used to develop a prototype of a new interface. The prototype was evaluated through user testing and modified thereafter. Based on the results found in the study nine principles regarding the usefulness, findability and usability for interfaces of complex information environments were summarized. These principles include developing interfaces from user goals and needs, presenting information that allows users to predict what additional information they can find, as well as supporting several information seeking strategies. Further research is necessary to examine if additional principles are needed and to validate the found principles.

The experience of e-commerce findability : A qualitative study of global and local navigation regarding UX and findability

Berggren, Sara, Tham, Beatrice January 2022 (has links)
Retail has for a long time gone from physical stores to internet-based trade. In addition, e-commerce has expanded by 60 percent since 2020 as a result of the Corona pandemic. This development is partly due to the fact that new consumers have switched to shopping online, existing e-commerce customers have increased spending and that the habit of shopping online has increased. Today, there are many different types of e-commerce sites. The largest share is aimed directly at consumers. Many Websites in e-commerce today have a wide range of products, which leads to information-heavy menus. This requires greater demands on the navigation structure and findability as it affects the user experience of interacting with the system. Because users have different strategies for achieving their information goals, e-commerce Websites must be built based on the knowledge of categorizing products and labels. There must also be an understanding of users' behavioral patterns in their navigation strategies, so that the system helps to achieve the users information goals and provides a positive user experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors in e-commerce's global and local navigation, regarding UX and findability that affect consumers' experience. Previous research shows that the critical design problem is not to gather as much information as possible but rather finding the right information. The way people navigate the web to meet their information needs are often by obtaining as much essential information as possible in a short period of time. This mainly explains why they do not scroll and click on links aimlessly. The survey methods applied in this study were qualitative user tests that were observed, followed by a system usability scale (SUS), and supplementary qualitative semi-structured interviews. The user study was conducted at one data collection occasion and the methods were considered suitable to find out the users' subjective experiences, attitudes and perceptions. It could be ascertained through the study that various factors affect the user experience both positively and negatively. It is individual how the user navigates the website, interprets labels and which products they expect to find under a certain categorization. A general behavior could also be demonstrated regarding navigation strategies, interpretation of labels and expectations of product placement, which were often based on a recognition factor based on previous experience.

Nilsson, Camilla January 2024 (has links)
This study investigated the interaction design of Sundbyberg's municipal intranet with the aim of analysing how various design elements affect the user experience, focusing on findability. The study was conducted using a combination of interviews, Think aloud tests, survey analysis, and a literature review. Based on cognitive science, this study drew on theories of The Gulf of Execution, The Gulf of Evaluation, as well as gestalt and design principles. These theoretical frameworks were used to analyse and understand users' interactions and to identify challenges and areas for improvement in Sundbyberg's municipal intranet. The comprehensive analysis identified several challenges, including an idadequate search function, inconsistent categorization, and a lack of clear navigation. To improve the usability of Sundbyberg's municipal intranet, several measures were proposed, visualized in a design proposal. This included a more intuitive navigation structure and an improved layout of the homepage. The study proposed specific design changes, including the use of visual hierarchy, hover effects, and a mega menu to make the interface more intuitive and reduce cognitive load for users. By implementing these user-centered design proposals, the intranet can be developed into a unifying platform that supports the city's vision of "Sundbyberg grows with you!"

No. of bitstreams: 1 Renate Landshoff.pdf: 3875996 bytes, checksum: a0da1263d095248a5d6973fb7cd4e325 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-19 / This study aims to recommend key elements which impact the ways to find information in digital library environments, including features found in Web 2.0. The theory is based on the concept of Findability, coined by Morville, on the significant contribution of Manovich, on Santaella‟s study about cognitive profiles of readers and Internet users, and on Weinberg and Cunha‟s view on the mission of digital libraries. The development of this work is based on the method of qualitative case studies, highlighting positive and negative aspects of search interfaces from elements considered relevant to digital library projects and identified with the contribution of concepts brought from Library and Information Science. The study emphasizes the contribution of digital libraries for Web search, without however fail to point to their weaknesses and need for evolution. The processing of information at the time of data entry, the development of more intelligent search interfaces, the different cognitive profiles of users, the participation of multidisciplinary teams and constant monitoring of the digital environment elements must be considered and pursued over the existence of a design of this profile. The study points out finally the changes that must occur in searching from the Semantic Web and the development of artificial intelligence, impacting the way we are used to seek information, continually increasing its "findability."
