Politinės realybės konstravimas žiniasklaidoje ir auditorijos suvokimas: atvejo analizė / Political reality construction in media and audience perception: case study

Sturlytė, Augustina 27 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The object of this master thesis is the presentation of political reality in media. As a theoretical background of research a framing theory was chosen. This theory concentrates on analysis of the thinking schemes of individuals and other social institutes. The main problem of this thesis is that media informs about the political issues through its own prism and constructs the frames which determine the corresponding event‘s interpretations. This problem leaded to a hypothesis of the thesis: media uses various tools for political issues enlightement and these tools imply the possible means of reading a message and creation of meanings. The aim of this thesis was both to present a theoretical background of political reality construction on the basis of framing and to study the tools of media framing construction via analysis of a specific event. For the achievement of this aim the following tasks were raised and implemented: to present the evolution of media effects overall and its political influence particularly, to present the framing theory and the reasons of framing usage in media, to analyse the framing factors and its relation with the frames constructed by the audience itself, to analyze a context of the specific political issue presented in this thesis, to research the media material about this issue and to determine the possible constructed meanings in these messages and to analyse the audience perception of this political issue being communicated through media. Konceptualizace života v českých populárních písních (Příspěvek ke studiu jazykového obrazu světa) / Conceptualization of Life in the Czech Popular Lyrics (Contribution to the Study of the Linguistic Picture of the World)

Janovská, Zuzana January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the conceptualization of life in the lyrics of Czech popular songs of 1960s. The thesis derives theoretically and methodologically from cognitively and culturally-based approaches to language, especially from the theory of conceptual metaphor and metonymy (e. g. Lakoff and Johnson) and the concept of language as a picture of the world (school of Lublin). At first the thesis analyses the semantics of lexeme life. The analysis is based on the data from dictionaries and it reaches the basics of the linguistic picture of life as it is anchored in common language. Simultaneously the thesis works with the picture of life (in contrast with death) how it is served in the literature about Czech folk culture. The main part of this study consists of almost a hundred interpretations of lyrics from the examined period, which depict human life in its various stages and forms (through oppositions of life - death, youth - old age, etc.). The analysis follows relevant semantic elements which participate on its conceptualization. The thesis describes systematically and in detail particularly metaphors (structural, ontological and orientational), metonymy, and also the image schemes which are associated with life (scheme of JOURNEY, CYCLE). The attention is paid to their specific language...

Koncept čtyř ročních období v českém jazyce / Concept of the four seasons in Czech language

Pevná, Lucie January 2012 (has links)
The diploma thesis explores the four seasons from the view point of the linguistic picture of the world theory. The etholinguistic approach is applied in the thesis - attention is paid to the Czech-specific perception of reality especially focused on the weather and the changes of the nature in the course of the four seasons. Human perception of the change is based upon the senses - the sense of hearing, the sense of smell, and touch and the eyesight. Each season is unique. The seasons can be differentiated by their season specific stereotypes, season prototypes, and connotations. On the linguistic pictures of each season collocations are built, from which new lexical items originate, describing the season as such. Due to anthropocentrism we perceive individual astronomical and meteorological issues as personified items to which we ascribe human behaviour and human qualities. The motto of the thesis says: "I will not do the spring sowing next year. " The motto denotes the interaction of two conceptual schemata (the scheme of a cycle and the scheme of a journey) realizing the fact that the natural cycle corresponds in our mental representation with the phases of human life. The difference between the concepts is that man always reaches the terminal point of his journey unlike the nature constantly...

Rétorické figury v překladu neliterárních textů / Figures of speech in non-literary translations

Mazancová, Zuzana January 2011 (has links)
The present thesis deals with figures of speech in non-literary texts and with the problems connected to their translation. The first part is dedicated to the theoretical description of figures of speech. First we deal with their definition according to the Czech and Spanish terminology and next we proceed to the figures that can be expected in popular science texts. We deal mainly with metaphors, their classification and opinions of translation scientists about the possibilities of their translation; but we mention also simile, metonymy and synecdoche. The second chapter is dedicated to popular science texts, to the problems connected to their translation, to the presence of metaphors in this type of texts and to their translation. In the second part we describe the analysed texts and the methods used in our work; the third part deals with the results of our analysis. During our analysis we found the same amount of figures of speech in both languages. Metaphors predominate in both languages, but while in Czech they represent the absolute majority of all figures, in Spanish they represent only a half of all the examples. Personification also appears many times in Spanish texts, but in Czech texts it doesn't appear in such a large measure. Metonymy, synecdoche and rhetorical question are represented...

Stromy ve Starém zákoně s přihlédnutím k mytologii starověkého Předního východu / Trees in the Old Testament Considering the Mythology of the Ancient Near East

Loukotová, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
This work deals with the symbolism of trees in the Old Testament considering the mythology of the ancient Near East, using relevant literature, concordant exploration, and synchronic and diachronic analyses of biblical texts. It aims to present an intersection of the most important aspects of the appearance of trees in the Scripture, both in a literal and figurative sense. Drawing on work with biblical and mythological texts from the ancient Near East, it presents the tree as a comprehensible symbol with strong explanatory power, which constitutes its potential to contain even the most complex messages of the Scripture and of the human condition as such.

A metáfora e sua função persuasiva em artigos de opinião sob a perspectiva da lingüística sistêmico-funcional / The metaphor and its persuasive function in opinion articles from the systemic-functional linguistics perspective

Once signed, they not necessarily represent the paper ideological stance (O Estado de São Paulo); however, Kitis & Miliapes (1996) claim that by being in it, they allow the readership to invest them with the same authority and reliability ascribed to the newspaper. In so being, we can use for the opinion article the very same Fowler s words (1991), when he claims that what distinguishes an editorial is not the expression of values and beliefs, but the textual strategies being used to stand out the speech acts of values and beliefs . This work analyses Gaudêncio Torquato s articles, published on a weekly basis, in O Estado de São Paulo, from the viewpoint of the Critical Linguistics , which proposes that analysis using appropriate linguistic tools, and referring to relevant historical and social contexts, can bring ideology, normally hidden through habitualization of discourse, to surface for inspection , Fowler (1991: 89). While the focus of the traditional analysis discourse is on the meanings established between sentences and utterances, in CDA the focus is on the selections which are made in constructing texts, on factors that constrain and determine these selections, and on their effect. According to Charteris-Black (2004), metaphor is one of these conscious linguistic choices that conceals underlying social processes, and metaphor analysis can aid in the identification of implicit textual content, and metaphor constitutes verbal evidence for an underlying system of ideas or ideology . Kress & Hodge (1993: 15) propose that ideology involves a systematically organized presentation of reality . With this is mind, the authors claim that metaphor is vital in creating such a presentation of reality. Stemming from a corpus of five opinion articles, the aim of this research is, by means of a metaphor-based study, to understand the functioning of this linguistic resource. It is through metaphor that the author expresses his attitudinal position on x the country s political developments, and manages at the same time to directly avoid threatening the face of the people involved, send out his message and persuade his readership. In my analysis, I resort basically to the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985; 1994), and its contributors, the Relevance Theory (Sperber & Wilson (1986; 1995), the Goatly s notions (1997) and the developments the theories have been receiving. According to Eggins (1994), what differentiates the SFL is that it seeks to develop a theory of language as a social process and a methodology which allows detailed and systematic description of linguistic patterns. The SFL is considered the more suitable theory-methodological approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (Fowler, 1991); Fairclough, 1992).

Candia, Guilene Detimermane de Souza 17 March 2009 (has links)

It was the study of the opening address of the South African leader, Nelson Mandela Rolihlahla, pronounced in the occasion of his entrance into the office as President of South Africa on 10 May 1994 in the city of Johannesburg, capital of that country. The speech was sharp in English language, but for the analysis, we used the Portuguese translation, interpreting the ideological occurrences in it. The option for this speech was because we believe it has been a landmark of changes in the history of that country. The approach of the Metaphor in Use assumes that even the metaphor is a figure of thought, which is conceptual. It manifests itself in scope of language in use, and it is from the discursive context that it can most be understood. This dissertation, therefore, fits into the approach of Metaphor in Use and in the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor. First, for analyzing the pragmatic meaning of metaphors, that is, its meaning within the specific socio-historical context, and secondly for appraising the reality by meaning of metaphors. Considering these theoretical tools and counting on the methodology of Critical Analysis of Metaphor, this dissertation aims to identify the metaphors that have the sense of carrying the ideology of Mandela and that expresses criticism of his predecessors in power in a polish way, while safeguarding the identities of those involved in the discourse. Both analyses had been in such a way carried through leaving for the identification of metaphorical expressions, thus indicating the types of metaphors identified and, finally, given by whom, where and for whom the speech was pronounced, seeking its pragmatic sense. The results have shown that Mandela, making use of linguistic and conceptual metaphors, first, expressed his pacifist ideology, showing still, that it is fruit of a long way and, secondly, criticized his predecessors in power, without causing harm, that is, the metaphors in this discourse had also had a role to disarm the aggression / Esta dissertação de mestrado refere-se à pesquisa, sob a perspectiva crítica e pragmática, das metáforas conceptuais e lingüísticas que tenham o sentido de portadora de ideologia e de estratégia de polidez num discurso político.

Mestriner, Vivian de Mello Martins 19 October 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T18:24:12Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Vivian de Mello Martins Mestriner.pdf: 1427276 bytes, checksum: 91455c035c6c488f6ad0367a033bc067 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-19 / This research aims to identify and analyze linguistic and conceptual metaphors in presidential speeches of Lula and Bush. To this end, we sought theoretical support in Corpus Linguistics (CL), which deals with the collection and use of corpora, or sets of linguistic textual data carefully collected, with the purpose of searching for a language or language variety. As such, the CL is dedicated to the exploration of language by means of empirical evidence, extracted by computer (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004:03). Besides the Corpus Linguistics, this study is based on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory postulated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the approach of metaphors in Cameron (2003), on the premise that both views of metaphor are complementary, considering that the conceptual metaphor is investigated through cognition and metaphor in use by means of expressions that occur in language. One of the contributions of this work is showing how metaphors in corpora can be identified with computer help. The identification of metaphor presents several challenges for Corpus Linguistics as it depends on human trial; at the same time, CL has been criticized for not making the connection between thought and language. However, contemporary theory of metaphor have shown the relationship between the systematic use of verifiable language corpora and cognition (LAKOFF & JOHNSON, 1980). As material for analysis were selected speeches of Presidents Bush and Lula, the first due to his recent political leadership of the largest global economic power, and the second for having been leader of a country on the run to development Brazil. Although the two presidents defend quite different policy options, they share some similarities as both have had difficulties to take the second term: Lula with the fame of corruption in his government, Bush with the Iraq war. Written and spoken on-line statements and speeches have been gathered covering the first five-year mandate of both presidents, totaling 868 speeches by Lula and 819 by Bush. The program Metaphor Identifier with free availability at CEPRIL (LESS) was used to search for words with metaphorical probability. Next, the correlation of these candidates was raised through the Concord program (WordSmith Tools, version 3.0) to attest possible methaphorical use. Finally, upon identification of the linguistic and conceptual metaphors, speeches of the two presidents were contrasted seeking to understand how metaphors shape such speeches / Esta pesquisa objetiva identificar e analisar metáforas linguísticas e conceptuais nos discursos presidenciais de Lula e Bush.

A metáfora conceptual na construção do discurso jornalístico / The conceptual metaphor in the construction of journalistic discourse

Silva, Luciana Soares da 03 October 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T19:34:29Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luciana Soares da Silva.pdf: 3644430 bytes, checksum: 66ee2b817b39aa259d4ad1e70891f970 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-10-03 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work seeks to identify and to engage in a critical approach on the uses of metaphors in the journalistic discourse. Such goals were motivated by the critical observation of newspapers in which we found the recurrence of metaphors in the making news; therefore debunking traditional view that recognizes metaphors only in literary texts. In order to achieve our purpose, we selected texts from the mainstrain newspaper Folha de S. Paulo´s coverage of Brazilian presidential election in the period between September and October 2006, as the corpus of this research. Then, we proceeded with the analysis, mainly based on the teorethical approach of the Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistic studies. While the former teach us that 'language' is associated with historical and social processes and therefore cannot be separated from the society that produces it, by introducing the category 'conceptual metaphor', the later provides a understanding of metaphor as a cognitive and social phenomenon. In this research, we have found that metaphors create the journalistic discourse as a linguistic-discursive strategy that both enables the construction of a particular discourse in the assessment and consumption of news, and produces effects over the meanings of news coverage. Moreover, taking the case studies here analyzed, we maintain that the metaphors create a web of meanings over the presidential election, which depict candidates´s images in a particular way; influencing, therefore, the reader's opinion / Objetivamos, neste trabalho, identificar e caracterizar as metáforas no discurso jornalístico.
