A Thematic Analysis of Gender Stereotypes in Children's Top Mobile Applications of 2018

Keene, Kyra Margaret 24 June 2020 (has links)
People around the globe rely on their mobile devices for instant access to entertainment and social media. Children comprise a large majority of individuals who use smartphone applications, particularly for gaming and learning opportunities. Understandably, these apps become part of the identity development process, including the formation of one's gender identity. App developers include gendered content to capture and maintain children's attention, but much of the existing research examines children in late childhood and early adolescence, leaving the ages of six to eight relatively undiscussed. The researcher utilized a thematic analysis to review 20 children's mobile applications for instances of gender stereotypes. Social cognitive theory offers a guiding principle for understanding the process of developing one's gender identity, as well as the role that external stimuli, such as digital media examples and parent models, play. This study aimed to determine whether mobile applications targeting the identified age group use gender stereotypes, as well as how they employ these stereotypes within the application. The researcher randomly selected 20 top children's applications on the Apple App Store and examined them for gendered instances, such as occupations and interests as well as character depictions. The results reflect that instances of gender stereotypes do occur in the children's mobile applications. Many of the applications portrayed feminine stereotypes surrounding nurturing and caregiving tasks ("Mommy in Training"), making it one of the most frequently exploited feminine stereotypes in the sample. The "Boys will be Boys" stereotype comprised the most frequently displayed masculine stereotypes across the studied applications. These findings represent the idea that society places higher value on these stereotypes than others, such as social relationships ("The Power of Motivational Friendship") or recklessness ("The Risk Taker"). Implications include modeling of traditionally masculine and feminine stereotypes for young users by utilizing popular characters recognizable by most children in the target age range. / Master of Arts / Handheld electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets, encompass some of the most widely used electronic devices in today's society. Most families in America have at least one mobile device with internet capability. Apple, the manufacturer of perhaps the most popular brand of electronic devices, pre-install their App Store on all devices they sell, giving users instant access to hundreds of thousands of different mobile applications that offer functions to make every aspect of life simpler. Young children spend a significant amount of their time playing games on these devices, although the American Academy of Pediatrics (2017) recommends that parents limit their children's daily screen time to no more than 2 hours, depending on the age of the child. The games that children download and play impose a number of different messages and stereotypes on their users, including gender stereotypes. Due to the substantial time children dedicate to these apps, the messages communicated regarding gender play crucial roles in the development of their gender identity. Social cognitive theory offers valuable insight and guidance into the gender identity development process. Therefore, the present study examines the gender stereotypes conveyed within 20 of the top children's mobile applications available on the Apple App Store in April 2018. The researcher randomly selected 20 children's applications, 10 each from the Top Free and Top Paid categories and examined them for gendered instances, such as occupations and interests as well as character depictions. The results reflect that instances of gender stereotypes do occur in the children's mobile applications. These represent the idea that society places higher value on certain stereotypes, like being caring and nurturing ("Mommy in Training") or engaging in messy, adventurous play ("Boys will be Boys"), than others, such as social relationships ("The Power of Motivational Friendship") or recklessness ("The Risk Taker"). Implications include modeling of traditionally masculine and feminine stereotypes for young users by utilizing popular characters recognizable by most children in the target age range.

Upplevelser av mobila applikationer för hantering av diabetessjukdom hos patienter med diabetes : en litteraturöversikt / Experiences of mobile applications for managing diabetes illness in patients with diabetes : a literature review

Soto Barahona, Jonathan Salvador, Nähl, Erik January 2024 (has links)
Background Diabetes mellitus is an umbrella term for various diabetes diseases, including type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are chronic conditions where insulin production has completely ceased or is insufficient to meet the body's requirements. The technological advancements in healthcare have gradually become more digitalized and created opportunities for a new type of support through mobile applications. Self-care is a crucial component of diabetes treatment, and mobile applications can serve as a tool for patients with diabetes. The nurse’s role needs to be adapted to meet the demands of a more digitized healthcare environment. This is to provide patients with adequate information and education on mobile applications to strengthen the patient's self-care ability. Aim The purpose is to shed light on patients' experiences and perceptions of mobile applications as support for self-care in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Method The study was conducted as a non-systematic literature review, which included 14 scientific articles retrieved from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. These articles were published within the last five years and encompassed both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Furthermore, the study followed a systematic structure where all articles were quality-assessed according to Sophiahemmet's evaluation criteria. The results were obtained through an integrated data analysis. Results The individuals' experiences and perceptions were compiled into three main categories and several subcategories. Out of the 14 selected articles, six were qualitative, five were quantitative, and three utilized a mixed methods approach. The results indicate a predominantly positive response towards mobile applications, as they contribute to improved self-care and engagement. However, questions regarding usability and technical limitations remain. Conclusions Mobile applications have significant potential to enhance diabetes care by empowering patients in self-management and providing important disease-related information to healthcare providers. Future research should focus on improving design and functionality, as well as addressing users' concerns regarding frustration and stress.

Amplifying Accessibility : Examining accessibility solutions and considerations for visual impairment in mobile applications

Södergren, Moana, Hallgren, Ella January 2023 (has links)
Though an increasingly more common occurrence, digital mobile applications are not typically particularly accessible for people with visual impairment. This study investigates the difficulties and consequences faced by developers and visually impaired users when implementing and using accessibility features as well as highlighting the principal considerations when doing so. The thesis employs the two complementary theoretical frameworks Universal Design Theory (UDT) and Critical Disability Theory (CDT) to both capture the functional and social dimensions of accessibility within digital mobile applications. The thesis highlights a knowledge gap among developers and companies, which over time can lead to an accruement of accessibility tech debt and poor design choices. The significance of education and prioritization cannot be overstated, no matter the managerial level. When developing inclusive mobile applications that cater to a wide range of users, it is essential to reframe accessibility features as an investment rather than a cost. A deeper comprehension of the social structures that contribute to disabled people being excluded from the use of digital applications can be achieved in part by incorporating Critical Disability Theory into decision-making processes. This thesis illustrates how drawing inspiration from both UDT and CDT while prioritizing accessibility throughout whole companies can make it possible to create truly inclusive mobile applications.

A cultural, community-based approach to health technology design

Parker, Andrea Grimes 29 June 2011 (has links)
This research has examined how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can promote healthy eating habits amongst African Americans in low-income neighborhoods, a population that faces disproportionately high rates of diet-related health problems. In this dissertation, I describe the formative research I conducted to obtain system design guidelines and how I used those guidelines to develop two applications: EatWell and Community Mosaic. I also describe the results of the in-depth field studies I conducted to evaluate each application. Both EatWell and Community Mosaic incorporate the cultural construct of collectivism, a social orientation in which interdependence and communal responsibility are valued over individual goals and independence. As researchers have generally characterized the African American culture as collectivistic and argued for the value of designing collectivistic health interventions for this population, I examined the implications of taking such an approach to designing health promotion technologies. EatWell and Community Mosaic are collectivistic because they empower users to care for the health of their local community by helping others learn practical, locally-relevant healthy eating strategies. I discuss the results of my formative fieldwork and system evaluations, which characterize the value, challenge and nuances of developing community-based health information sharing systems for specific cultural contexts. By focusing on health disparities issues and the community social unit, I extend previous health technology research within Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In particular, my results describe 1) a set of characteristics that help make shared material useful and engaging, 2) how accessing this information affects how people view the feasibility of eating well in their local context, 3) the way in which sharing information actually benefits the contributor by catalyzing personal behavior reflection, analysis and modification and 4) how sharing information and seeing that information's impact on others can help to build individuals' capacity to be a community health advocate. In addition, my work shows how examining cultural generalizations such as collectivism is not a straightforward process but one that requires careful investigation and appreciation for the way in which such generalizations are (or are not) manifested in the lives of individual people. I further contribute to HCI by presenting a set of important considerations that researchers should make when designing and evaluating community-based health systems. I conclude this dissertation by outlining directions for future HCI research that incorporates an understanding of the relationship between culture and health and that attempts to address health disparities in the developed world.

Κακοσίμου, Ελένη 27 May 2014 (has links)
Mobile Health or mHealth, namely the use of mobile and wireless technologies in order to improve health services and achieve health goals, is today one of the most rapidly expanding fields of electronic health (eHealth). The number of health professionals that adopt smartphones to perform multiple tasks, during their everyday medical practice, is increasing constantly. This is due to the fact that smartphones provide advanced computing capabilities and high portability. Simultaneously, medication errors are among the most common medical errors which have negative impact both for the health of the patient and the expenditure on health sector. Drug prescribing is quite a complex procedure, considering the fact that requires the health expert to analyze multiple factors and retrieve, process, manage and digest large volume of information. According to the literature, the use of information technologies to assist health professionals in decision-making when prescribing drugs, can contribute significantly to the reduction of medication errors. In the context of our work, we explored and evaluated the major smartphone applications for drugs, aiming to the extraction of useful conclusions about the features and functions that they incorporate. One of the research key findings was the absence of a corresponding application for the drugs that are approved by the National Drug Organization of Greece. Therefore, we design and develop an application for checking drug-drug interactions which additionally provides the ability to view national formulary information about drugs. The analysis and design of the application was implemented in collaboration with future users, such as health professionals and patients, in order to ensure that will meet their needs and requirements and at the same time will remain user friendly. This application is intended for Android smart mobile devices (e.g. smartphones, tablet PCs) and the information that integrates is solely based on the national formulary of the National Drug Organization of Greece.

Καρούσος, Διονύσιος 11 August 2011 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 120423 Master Thesis FGV.pdf: 3697873 bytes, checksum: f3ccbecacf430eaee0f0606f9daa9f36 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-04-23 / Internet Telephony (VoIP) is changing the telecommunication industry. Oftentimes free, VoIP is becoming more and more popular amongst users. Large software companies have entered the market and heavily invest into it. In 2011, for instance, Microsoft bought Skype for 8.5bn USD. This trend increasingly impacts the incumbent telecommunication operators. They see their main source of revenue – classic telephony – under siege and disappear. The thesis at hand develops a most-likely scenario in order to determine how VoIP is evolving further and it predicts, based on a ten-year forecast, the impact it will have on the players in the telecommunication industry. The paper presents a model combining Rogers’ diffusion and Christensen’s innovation research. The model has the goal of explaining the past evolution of VoIP and to isolate the factors that determine the further diffusion of the innovation. Interviews with industry experts serve to assess how the identified factors are evolving. Two propositions are offered. First, VoIP operators are becoming more important in international, corporate, and mobile telephony. End-to-end VoIP (IP2IP) will exhibit strong growth rates and increasingly cannibalize the telephony revenues of the classic operators. Second, fix-net telephony in SMEs and at home will continue to be dominated by the incumbents. Yet, as prices for telephony fall towards zero also they will implement IP2IP in order to save costs. By 2022, up to 90% of the calls will be IP2IP. The author recommends the incumbents and VoIP operators to proactively face the change, to rethink their business strategies, and to even be open for cooperation.

Based on the Technology Acceptance model (DAVIS, BAGOZZI, WARSHAW, 1989), Diffusion of Innovation (ROGERS, 1995) and Trust (CARTER; BÉLANGER, 2005), the paper also proposes a review of the literature applied to the Mobile Application context of AMTs (VAN BILJON; Kotze, 2007). For the purpose of the research, the AMTs are defined as mobile service advanced applications which enable, through Internet and geolocation, a taxi transportation request in mobile devices, by means of information systems and phone calls, also monitoring the service provision and payment. Based on semi-structured interviews and questionnaires applications in field research, the study proposes a triangulation of the methods Lexical Analysis (BOTTA,2010; GEERAERTS,2010), Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2006), and Average Ranking (OLIVEIRA, 2005) for the investigation of the identified factors in the literature. The results indicate that the success factors influencing the adoption of AMTs by taxi drivers, are Simplicity and Perceived Usefulness, while moderators are Security and Financial Gains. It is believed that the research can contribute to the discussion of a topic still few explored in the literature in Brazil, Mobile Applications, and provide managerial implications for innovation in applications development companies.

Les Applications Long-Life dédiées à l’utilisation dans les smart / Long-Life Application dedicated to smart usage

Karchoud, Riadh 14 December 2017 (has links)
Nowadays, mobile devices host many applications that are directly downloaded and installed from mobile application stores. The existence of such a large amount of apps for a myriad of purposes imposes a huge overhead on users, who are in charge of selecting, installing, and executing the appropriate apps, as well as deleting them when no longer needed. Moreover, these applications have mostly neglected to take into account the user’s context, as they propose static non-evolving scenarios. These applications serve for specific purposes and get deleted or forgotten most of the time after the first use. Furthermore, these apps fail to consider the, soon coming, connected world due to their monolithic architecture implemented to work on single devices. The proposed long-life application provides a new way to respond to the user’s needs dynamically and distributedly. It evolves at runtime by including/excluding business functionalities, updating the interaction mode, and migrating executions on multiple devices according to the user’s preferences. While he/she moves in his/her surroundings, the app detects the occurring events and builds contextually-described situations. So, this work aims to offer a new type of mobile application able to detect, formulate and understand the users’ context then react accordingly.
