Previous issue date: 2014-12-04 / In the past few years, the World witnessed several protests taking place in countries ranging from traditionally developed democracies to developing nations under dictatorships. These social movements gained ground simultaneously to a global explosion in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) over these years, notably mobile phones and the Internet (ITU, 2013; CETIC, 2013), facilitating information diffusion and bypassing traditional media. While some studies argue that different nations contexts are the true responsible for protests, others consider both the context and ICT access as relevant. The research purpose is to identify explanatory variables for protest through a panel data approach, considering its technological, social and political aspects. For this goal, World Bank, ITU and World Economic Forum data were used on a sample of 124 countries.

Venda choral music: compositional stylesMugovhani, Ndwamato George 28 February 2007 (has links)
Black choral music composers in South Africa, inspired by the few opportunities available to them until recent times, have nonetheless attempted to establish, perhaps subconsciously, some choral tradition and, in doing so, incorporate African musical elements in their works.
My research traces the foundations and historical development of choral music as an art amongst Vhavenda, and the contributions made thereto by a number of past and present Venda composers that this researcher could manage to identify and trace, to the music of the people. The selected composers are Stephen Maimela Dzivhani, Matthew Ramboho Nemakhavhani, Derrick Victor Nephawe, Joseph Khorommbi Nonge, Israel Thinawanga Ramabannda and Fhatuwani Hamilton Sumbana.
Through the application of multiple methodological lenses, the study sets out to analyse, describe, and interpret Venda choral music. Of particular interest is the exploration of the extent to which the ”formal” education that was brought by the Berlin Missionaries influenced Venda choral musicians, particularly the selected Venda choral music composers. Also crucial to this research is the exploration and identification of elements peculiar to indigenous Venda traditional music in the works of these composers. The question is whether it was possible for these composers to realize and utilize their potentials fully in their attempt to evoke traditional Venda music with their works, given the very limiting Western tonic sol-fa notational system they were solely working with. The project also briefly traces the place of Venda choral music within the South African music context and its role within the search for cultural identity.
The research has found that the majority of Venda choral music written so far has generally not been capable of evoking indigenous Venda traditional music. Whilst these composers choose themes that are akin to their culture, social settings, legend and general communal life, the majority of the music they set to these themes does not sound African (Venda in particular) in terms of the rhythms and melodies. The majority of the compositions under scrutiny have inappropriate settings of Venda words into the melodies employed. This can be attributed to the limitations imposed by the tonic sol-fa notational system, which was the only system they were taught in the missionary schools established around Venda and which, itself, was flawed as well as the general lack of adequate music education on the part of the composers themselves. Despite these limitations and the very few opportunities available to them, Venda choral music composers nonetheless managed to lay a foundation for choral music as an art amongst their people (Vhavenda). / Art history, Visual Ars and Musicology / D. Previous issue date: 2009 / This research joins Costa’s (2001) conception that the literary and musical speech as a discursive practice serves as a reference to the subjects, legitimizing truths and spreading ways how those subjects interact with reality, with other subjects and with themselves. Our association with Costas’s mind increased further when the objective of our project was defined as the engaged songs and the songs of protest and neoprotest of the speech community of rock80, called Brock, a musical moment with great integration of youth, when the amused discourse of the rockers served as interaction and was confused with the copyright word of those young people, changing their ideas and the way they thought, felt and acted. The theory that guided our paper was the Speech Analysis by French line, the theoretic material provided by Maingueneau (2001). Our research set out to investigate the following categories ethos, set design and linguistics code in the speech of those songs, taking as reference the seminal engagement of the protest line which was in the songs of the sixties, choosing original songs of Geraldo Vandré, Zé Kéti e Sérgio Ricardo as emblem. In this paper, we proved the involvement of rock songs of eighties observing the linguistics materiality inside the code, at the capture of its ethos by those speakers, which was reflected in the construction of the scenery. The research clarified and confirmed our initial position about the existence of marks of protest in both the gestures: the literary and musical community of the sixties and the rock tribe of eighties, as well. The first one left its trademark in an analog, black and white speech, whereas the last one left its speech in a colorful, digital format.

Representações de ciência e tecnologia no anarquismo brasileiro contemporâneo e a ação direta / The representations of science and technology in the contemporary brazilian anarchist and the direct actionHenning, Luiz Felippe de Castro 24 April 2017 (has links)
The year of 2013 is marked by the rise of massive street demonstrations in Brazil, as well as the reappearance of anarchist ideology within the social movements, along with direct action. Different modalities of direct action were seen in the streets. This work aims to understand the relationships between the anarchist world representations and their mode of political practice and direct action. Our hypothesis is that the different forms of direct action, that are arranged in the different currents of the anarchism, reflect different representations of science and technology, present in this political movement, that range from deterministic to sociotechnical notions. To verify these elements, field surveys and interviews were conducted during the year of 2016 in the city of São Paulo, aiming to contemplate the different currents of anarchism. As a result of this research effort, we face an anarchism that has internal dissensions, but these are less important than its confluence points, thus, a standard of anarchist science and technology representation underlies the movement. In this sense, therefore, such research reinforces anarchism as a current that its own notions and perspectives, which are aligned with its principles, theory and practices.

The Solomon four groups plan: A cross-Hispanamerican educational evaluation / El plan de cuatro grupos de Solomon : evaluación educativa transhispanoamericanaGorenc, Klaus-Dieter, Castro Bonilla, Luis, Peredo Rivera, Sandra, Abreu Rivera, Luis Felipe, Oblitas Guadalupe, Luis Armando, Llanos Zuloaga, Roberto 25 September 2017 (has links)
Two modalities of research design's workshops -long and short- were developed to qualify 658 Hispanamerican research workers, whom were divided into 30 groups, and were applyied along ten years. The terminal efficiency of the workshops was measured with a pre-post-test design and the differences were assessed with a t-test -for dependent samples-. The results showed that the values of the post-test were higher -p ≤ 0.001- than the pretest averages. Contrasting the two workshop versions, the average of the long workshop was significantly higher -p ≤ 0.001- than the short one, by means of a multiple pre-post-test design and the t-test for independent samples. Using Solomon four-group design it was feasible to establish that the significant increase of knowledge about research designs was not influenced by the interaction of the pretest and treatment factors and there was not observed any significant difference between both versions.

Ny Protest? : En fallstudie av rörelsen Planka.nu. / New protest? : A case study of the social movement Planka.nu.Åkerström, Linda January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to analyse the social movement Planka.nu with reference to the theory of new social movements in order to engage in a discussion about the presence of “old” tradition and “new” trends. As well as empirical, the purpose is also theoretical and methodological: to examine, and extend, the discussion about new and old social movements. A qualitative method is used. The analytical framework is based on a combination of theories of social movements and new social movements. Planka.nu was started in 2003 in Stockholm. The movement uses the Internet to organise free-riding on the public buses and trains with the aim of pressuring regional politicians into fully financing public transportation by progressive taxation. In all aspects discussed, both old and new characteristics were found. Behind a rhetoric that to a large extent resembles that of the traditional Swedish labour movement lies a redefinition of values, ideas and strategies that correspond with the theory of new social movements. By adopting a theoretical outlook on social movements that questions the existence of two divided blocs, a more nuanced discussion of the combination of old and new aspects could be held.

Chico Buarque 1964-1968 - Lirísmo ou protesto? / Chico Buarque 1964-1968 - Lyricism or protest?Schütz, Johan Christher January 2009 (has links)

: En studie av Sjukvårdspartiet i Värmland / Why do Political Parties emerge? : A Study of Sjukvårdspartiet i VärmlandUtter, Johan January 2010 (has links)
Abstract Why do Political Parties emerge? – A Study of "Sjukvårdspartiet i Värmland" Political Science, Johan Utter The political parties have important roles to play in contemporary society. They act as bearers of power and presents the voters with finished packages of ideas on how society should grow, develop and change. Political parties are essential to the survival and wellbeing of representative democracy. Many theories have been developed over the years concerning matters related to political parties, but one area of research remains largely unexplored, namely the topic on why political parties do emerge in the first place. Why do some individuals become creators of political parties? Since this is a weak theoretical field an attempt will be made to contibute to the understanding concerning what makes new political parties emerge. This is done by relating previous contributors theories to the results obtained from a case study undertaken on the emergence of "Sjukvårdspartiet i Värmland", a political party risen from a protest-movement concerning the preservation of the local hospital in Kristinehamn. By testing this case against earlier research a foundation will be created and from which new ideas about political parties can be generated. By interviewing the creator of the political party "Sjukvårdspartiet i Värmland" an attempt is made to reveal the incentives which led to the party formation. These results are then compared to the causal mechanisms proposed by earlier research. The purpose is to analyze if theories from earlier research is able to explain the emergence of "Sjukvårdspartiet i Värmland". The results show that party formations are cryptic political phenomena, which needs larger and more developed theoretical constructions before the question "Why do political parties emerge?" can be properly answered.
