Two cross-country skiers in the tabloids : - A study of the tabloids coverage of Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner in the 2010 Olympics and the 2014 Olympics

Stenvall, Johan January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine how the two Swedish cross-country skiers, Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner are portrayed in the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen. The study is based on theories of sports journalism, media- and gender studies. Within these theories there are beliefs that men and women are portrayed differently in sports journalism. Sports journalism is described as a subject where there is a hierarchy in which the man is often framed as dominant in relationship to the woman. This study was made in an attempt to examine whether this was the case in the Swedish tabloid magazines Aftonbladet and Expressens coverage of the winter Olympics. Articles published about Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014 were analyzed by a quantitative content analysis. The two athletes were selected because they during the time of the study were prominent in their sport in which both achieved similar success. The results of the study showed that there were differences in Aftonbladet and Expressen’s media coverage of Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner. Kalla appeared in more numbers of articles than Hellner but she was often described as weak and her physical appearance was often highlighted. Hellner was often described as strong and focused regardless of whether he had failed or was successful.

The following essay is based on a quantitative as well as a qualitative study with the aim ofmapping out the representation and depiction of different sports, with focus on equestriansports, in two of Sweden’s largest daily newspapers during a time period of four weeksin 2012. Berglund, Emil, Idemark, Oscar January 2013 (has links)
In this C-essay examines how football players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo depicts in different countries media, especially newspapers and web sites. Bollen är i rullning för en jämställd fotboll : En tematisk innehållsanalys om Sportbladets gestaltning av de svenska dam- och herrlandslagen i fotboll / The ball has started rolling towards equal representation in soccer : A thematic content analysis of Sportbladet’s portration of the Swedish women’s and men’s national team in soccer

Zanier, Manda, Nilsson, Philippa January 2024 (has links)
This study’s aim and purpose was to analyze how the Swedish tabloid Sportbladet portrayed the Swedish women’s and men's national teams in soccer under two different championships, 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020. A thematic content analysis was used as the method to analyze 65 different articles from Sportbladet. 22 articles from 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 43 articles from UEFA Euro 2020. The research questions for this study were:Q1: How is the Swedish women's national soccer team portrayed during the 2023 Women's World Cup by Sportbladet? Q2: How is the Swedish men's national soccer team portrayed during UEFA 2020 by Sportbladet?Q3: What differences can be seen in how the two national teams are portrayed? The findings of the study were similar to prior studies in the field of sports and gender. The result of this study reveals that there still is more reporting about male soccer but a new finding our study made was that it is starting to equal out. A large number of the articles about the women’s national team were about performance-irrelevant aspects, such as relationships on and off the field. There were also articles of how players took a stand on different social issues such as equality. The Swedish men’s national team was portrayed as still having a higher value and prestige by receiving more coverage. There were also more articles about performance- relevant aspects such as preparation, success and honor. Unlike the Swedish women’s national team, the men’s team received much more criticism by Sportbladets writers. The largest difference in the portrayal of the two national teams was that the women’s national team portrayed more with more performance-irrelevant aspects while the men's national team was portrayed with their performance. The men’s national team were also portrayed more as strong individuals, while the women were portrayed largely as not being as strong and needing male guidance. A noticeable difference was also how the success was illustrated, the Swedish women's national team were praised a lot as a group while the male players were praised for their individual performances. A contribution from this study was that the only articles about sexism, such as looks and clothing, were directed towards the men, which goes against what previous studies have found.

Spelet bakom orden : En kvantitativ analys av könsskillnader i fotbollsintervjuer

Mörtel, Klara January 2024 (has links)
In this bachelor's thesis, the gender-related dynamics in media reporting of Swedish football are explored. The study analyzes video interviews from the Men's Allsvenskan and Women's Damallsvenskan to reveal any gender differences in sports journalism and its impact on societal norms and values. This research addresses a previously unexplored aspect of sports journalism by examining and comparing the questions directed at male and female football players during video interviews. The research questions in the thesis are as follows: How does the coverage and reporting of male and female football players differ over a season? And, How do the questions asked in Swedish football interviews differ between male and female football players? These questions are crucial for understanding the overall media image and how gender is portrayed in sports journalism.  Theoretically, the thesis relies on a number of theories that provide a deeper understanding of the media's role in society and how they shape perceptions of gender and gender roles within sports. These include the Power of Journalism, the Power of the Interview, Gender and Gender Studies, Representation Theory, and Agenda Setting Theory. Each of these theories highlights different aspects of how gender patterns and power relations differ in media reporting and representation within sports journalism. Methodologically, the study uses quantitative content analysis to systematically analyze and compare the gender-related differences in the interviews. This meticulous methodology enables a quantification and analysis of how gender affects the questions and narratives presented to the players, and provides valuable insights into how media content can contribute to norm formation and representation within sports and media.  The results identify significant gender differences in the portrayal of sports journalism, with male athletes receiving more frequent and performance-oriented interviews, while female athletes are asked broader questions, which risks reinforcing stereotypical perceptions. A tendency where interviewers and interviewees share gender shows a potential segregation, but reporting on emotions and rulings indicates gender neutrality. The study has significant relevance for several areas, including media and communication studies, sports science, as well as for practitioners in the media industry and sports organizations. It contributes to an understanding of how gender aspects and gender representation differ in media content and sports journalism, and can help to shape more equal and inclusive media practices.

Fredriksson, Johan, Borg, Jenny January 2015 (has links)
According to earlier studies, men dominates the sports pages in Swedish newspapers. The gender balance is far from equal and the purpose of this thesis is therefore to look into how Swedish local and regional newspapers covered gender in their sports pages during the year of 2013. The study also examines the news values of men’s and women’s sports, whether there are any differences compared to previous studies and whether there are any differences across the country. The study uses a quantitative content analysis and the result is based on editorial material from six randomly selected newspapers in 18 randomly selected days. We have analyzed 2005 separate units in 108 copies of newspapers. The study shows, as in previous studies, that the news feed is mainly concentrated on sports practiced by men, and it isn’t any significant differences across the country regarding the coverage of gender. Sports practiced by men also have a higher newsworthiness since it gets more space and are more promoted on the frontpages of the newspapers. The conclusion is therefore that sports practiced by women are marginalized as a deviation from the male norm.

Starka skidtjejer, men inga killar – bara herrar : Svensk skidpress bevakning av den svenska cupen i längdskidåkning ur ett jämställdhetsperspektiv / Strong skiing girls, but no boys – only men : The Swedish skiing press' coverage of the Swedish cup in cross country skiing, from a gender equality perspective

Johansson, Lukas, Jakobsson, Alfred January 2018 (has links)
We studied close to 100 articles about the Swedish cup in cross country skiing, published by the three media outlets that cover the entire series; www.sweski.com , www.langd.se and www.skidzonen.com. The articles were published between 2015 and 2018 and by using a quantitative analysis we discovered that in these articles, the men and the women received almost exactly the same amount of attention, as far as counting words goes. In the articles which focused on both the female and the male athletes, the editors usually chose a picture from the women’s competition as the top image. We also saw a pattern where the women were far more often mentioned by their first names only, whereas the men were usually mentioned by their full names or their last names only. Another interesting theme that we found through a qualitative text analysis regarded how the athletes were portrayed in the articles, where the women seemed to be looked upon as less mature than the men. For example, they were often called “girls” instead of “women”, but the men the same age were never referred to as “boys”. These are seen by us as signs of trivialization and infantlization of the female athletes. However, we did not find any signs of the women being described as weak, or with a focus on their appearances and private lives. These were common patterns in the previous research on the subject.
