Ungdomsbrottslighet, en allvarlig fara? : En diskursanalys av hur unga lagöverträdare framställs i svensk nyhetsmedia / Juvenile delinquency, a serious threat? : A discourse analysis of how criminal youth is portrayed in Swedish news media.

Holmer, Sara, Öberg, Niclas January 2020 (has links)
Juvenile delinquency is a big problem in Sweden according to the news media. The newsreports that violent crime among youths is occurring frequently, now more than ever before. Drug use, vandalism, abuse, and organized crime is rampant among the criminal youth. The Swedish justice system is powerless to resolve this issue, as reoffenders are a common occurrence among the criminal youth. It is only a matter of time before you fall victim to this criminal wave. Is this the reality we live in, or is what the news media wants to portray by constructing their own version of reality? The findings of this study show that the news media are pursuing their own agenda and are using an occurring set of discourses as their means. The authors of this study are, through a critical discourse analysis, investigating how the news media are describing the criminal youth in Sweden.

Offer och förövare : En kritisk diskursanalys ur ett genusperspektiv av hur unga framställs i LVU-domar

Breed, Belinda, Córdoba, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to analyse how juveniles who were charged with and/or convicted of crimes were presented in The Care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act (LVU) -judgments, from a gender perspective. Fairclough's critical discourse analysis was used to answer the research questions. The theoretical foundation consisted of social constructionism, Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis and Hirdman’s theory about gender systems. The main result of the study showed differences in how the juveniles were described and presented based on gender discourses. Girls were described as vulnerable and in need of protection and support. Boys were described as aggressive and threatening. Two discourses were found, the victims discourse - focusing on girls as victims of their situation and actions, and the perpetrators discourse - focusing on boys as responsible for their own situation and actions. The discourses showed societal power structures that could maintain a hierarchy between the genders, where boys are superior.

Lundberg, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
Reports of gang violence have become a prominent focus in the media. The rhetoric used in reporting gang related crime will have an impact on the reader's perception of the seriousness of gang crime. The media coverage can result in outbreaks of ‘moral panic’, where by aspecific group is demonized and held responsible for societal problems. The aim of this thesis is to study representations of gang related crime, and specifically two rival gangs from Rinkeby, Stockholm, “Shottaz” and “Dödspatrullen”, in the two Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet, between the years 2019 and 2022. This is done using critical discourse analysis as method and theory, complemented by the concept of moral panic. The analysis is based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional methodological framework; a sample of newspaper articles dealing with gang crime are analyzed with a focus on the degree of modality, intertextuality and interdiscoursivity. The resultant findings indicate the nature of a dominant discourse and another, less prominent counter discourse. The dominant discourse can be assumed to play a role in triggering moral panic; the findings indicate a link between the story society tells itself about gang crime and a concomitant societal moral panic relating to gang crime. Only one of the newspaper articles analyzed for this study interviews peopleactually affected by gang conflict. This identified counter discourse offers a more nuanced representation of the conflict between “Shottaz” and “Dödspatrullen”, and of the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. Music also contributes to the alternative counter narrative, telling a story at odds with that which this study indicates to be the dominant societal discourse.

Management of safety concerns in rural primary schools of Maleboho West Circuit in Limpopo Province

Mapaya, Mabotseke Dina 20 September 2019 (has links)
MEd (Educational Management) / Department of Educational Management / The aim of the study was to investigate management of safety concerns in rural primary schools of Maleboho West circuit in Capricorn District. In rural areas, management of safety at primary school level is not adequate. Safety issues such as the carrying of sharp objects to classrooms, lack of scholar patrols and security guards, vandalizing of school property, poor condition of school buildings do not receive special attention in order to secure quality teaching and learning. To achieve the above aim, the study employed the interpretive paradigm to understand safety concerns from participants’ perspectives. The study was guided by a comprehensive approach theory to school safety. The study population comprised principals, teachers, governance official, chairpersons of School Governing Bodies and security personnel in Maleboho West circuit. In line with the interpretive research paradigm, purposive sampling was used to choose 11 participants that formed the study sample. Data was collected through interviews and document analysis. Data was analysed thematically. The results show that poor management of safety concerns is real and compromises the quality of teaching and learning. Amongst other measures, the study recommends enforcing discipline amongst learners and teachers; abolishment of pit toilets; availability of scholar patrols and security guards and ensuring the general monitoring of the safety of learners and school property. / NRF

Vi är alltid lite sena på bollen : En fallstudie om interventioner relateratgängkriminalitet bland unga i lokal kontext / We are not quite on time : A case study of interventions related gang crime among young people in a local context

Blom, Amanda, Barrington, Carl January 2023 (has links)
Summary: The organized youth crime that exists today is a relatively newsocial problem in most parts of our country. Younger people are drawn intothe criminal lifestyle and the phenomenon is an upgoing trend in Sweden, especially in ages between 15-20. In this study we wanted to see how oursociety responds to this phenomenon, in a local context. Our study is done ina municipality with 70 000+ inhabitants. We choose to use a case study as a research method. The empirical datacollected through interviews, with a total of eight respondents affiliated tothe phenomenon. The results given from the interviews shows that there is alack of clarity in how the phenomenon should be handled. We could see thatthe interventions of the problem are still under development. There aredifferent views on who carries what responsibility and which interventionsare most appropriate to these young kids. The schools approach seems to notmatch the target groups needs and their actions can be seen as one of thesocial mechanisms that is enabling the problem.

An assessment of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk programme

Hlungwani, Freddy 20 June 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to assess the implementation of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD) programme in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster in Gauteng. Since the Social Crime Prevention Strategy was introduced in the South African Police Service (SAPS), no study has been conducted in the organisation to assess whether this strategy has yielded the expected results in line with its objectives. Data was collected by means of in-depth interviews as well as focus group interviews with Community Policing Forum (CPF) members, YCPD programme community volunteers, SAPS social crime prevention coordinators, Department of Community Safety (DoCS) social crime prevention coordinators and a station commander in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster. These participants are closely involved with the YCPD programme and freely expressed their views, understanding, knowledge and beliefs in relation to the implementation and associated activities of the YCPD programme. In addition, the researcher conducted a comprehensive literature study of the national legislation, SAPS policies and directives that oversee and promote social crime prevention in South Africa, as well as library resources and international studies. Various objectives were fulfilled in the execution of this study:  It was determined that social crime prevention guidelines are not complied with regarding the implementation of the YCPD.  It was determined that the YCPD is not achieving its proposed aims and objectives. In addition, this study and its results provide a framework for mitigating the challenges encountered during the implementation of strategies for improving the establishment of the YCPD in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster. The findings of the research indicate that the YCPD programme has not been effectively implemented within the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, since it became evident that the YCPD role-players are confronted by various challenges, which impede the proper implementation of the programme. Based on the findings of this study, a Youth Crime Prevention Desk Implementation Framework was developed. This framework could serve as a guideline advising the South African Police Service, Department of Community Safety, Community Policing Forums and Youth Crime Prevention Desk programme’s community volunteers in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster how the implementation of the programme could be improved. This framework could also contribute towards further identifying best practices with a view to benchmarking such a framework in other areas in South Africa. This study makes a significant contribution to the improvement of the implementation of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk programme in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster and to youth social crime and violence in general. / Police Practice / D. An Exploratory Study of Crime Among High School Learners in Nzhelele East Circuit, Vhembe District, Limpopo Province

Mathungeni, Recheal Nthangeni 18 May 2015 (has links)
MA (Youth in Development) / Institute for Gender and Youth Studies / High school crime has become a major problem all over the world including South Africa. The aim of this study was to explore the nature, causes and effects of youth crime amongst learners in high schools in Nzhelele East Circuit. Three high schools known for high crime rate were purposefully selected. A mixed method approach was adopted. Focus groups were conducted among the Life Orientation teachers in the selected schools to collect qualitative data, and questionnaires were administered to learners to collect quantitative data. Purposive sampling was used to sample Life Orientation teachers for the focus groups. Stratified random sampling was used to survey 40 grade 10 and 40 grade 11 learners from each of the three high schools (240 learners). Qualitative data was analyzed thematically and the quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics methods. Consequently, the results from the two methods were compared and triangulated. Ethical precautionary measures were taken to avoid harm to the research participants. The study found that a variety of family, economic and environmental factors contribute to crime in schools. Findings of this study assist the teachers, learners, parents and the Department of Education authorities in the Vhembe District to gain a better understanding of the nature, causes and effects of crime among high school learners. Only a multi-pronged strategy can be effective in overcoming crime which is plaguing many high schools in South Africa. / NRF

A Novel Approach to Youth Crime Prevention: Mindfulness Meditation Classes in South African Townships / A Novel Approach to Youth Crime Prevention : Mindfulness Meditation Classes in South African Townships

Kneip, Katharina January 2020 (has links)
Children growing up in poor areas with high crime rates are shown to easily get involved in violent actions and criminal gangs. In South Africa, despite considerable efforts to reduce youth delinquency, youth crime rates are still disturbingly high – specifically, in the townships of the Cape Flats. This paper points out an important aspect previously unaddressed by most youth crime prevention: the subconscious roots of youth crime. What if we could develop youth crime prevention programs that manage to impact the subconscious behavioral patterns of youth in high crime areas? This paper proposes a  promising and cost-effective approach that has great potential to affect multipe causes of crime: mindfulness meditation. Built upon newest findings in Neuroscience, this paper suggests that mindfulness meditation classes are associated with a reduction in aggressive behavior, a risk factor for youth crime, and an increase in self-efficacy, a protective factor. The impact of mindfulness classes at a high school in Khayelitsha, a poor and violent-stricken township of Cape Town, is analyzed. Self-reported aggression and self-efficacy are measured via a psychometric survey questionnaire created from two well-tested and validated scales. Regression analyses of 384 survey answers provided mixed results. Whilst novice meditators were not associated with higher self-efficacy and lower aggression, long-term meditators performed better in several dimensions of self-efficacy and aggression, yet no significant relationship was found. Further research specifically needs to investigate the moderating effect of age (a proxy for psychological development) on meditation. This study aims to bridge the gap between the outdated paradigms of youth crime prevention and ancient wisdom via ground-breaking new evidence from the field of Neuroscience. This study furthermore hopes to point policy makers toward developing new, integrative and sustainable approaches to youth crime prevention – approaches that give back agency to our youth. / <p>Anders Westholm har inget med betygssättningen att göra annat än i rent formellt hänseende (examinator).
