The magic pudding : a verbal and pictorial translation

Souza, Liziane Kugland de January 2017 (has links)
Based on my unpublished translation of The Magic Pudding (1918), Australian children’s novel written and illustrated by Norman Lindsay, this thesis aims at demonstrating the peculiarities of translating illustrated children’s literature. Therefore, it analyses the role of the illustrations in the translation while raising questions on literary adaptation at a time when new reading media and technology compete with the printed book for children’s attention. Given that O Pudim Mágico is the first translation of the novel into Portuguese and due to the importance of the illustrations in the narrative, I propose a foreignised translation to preserve Australia’s cultural and natural elements, in particular foods and animals, visible in the target text. For the same reasons, both the text proper and the illustrations are regarded as texts, respectively verbal and pictorial, in opposition to the verbal and pictorial peritexts added to the target text. This study is divided into four chapters: 1) a presentation of the author’s biography and oeuvre, as well as of the context in which The Magic Pudding was written, followed by a detailed summary of the novel, a discussion on the peculiarities of translating for children and, mainly based on Lawrence Venuti and Gérard Genette, a justification for the foreignising approach with the employment of peritextual elements; 2) a presentation of Javier Franco Aixelá’s strategies to translate culture-specific items in order to discuss the treatment of proper names that hold cultural meanings; considering the target reader, the addition of peritextual elements, such as new illustrations combined with a verbal preface, is suggested as a means to avoid the employment of footnotes; 3) an analysis of the influence of Lindsay’s illustrations on the translation with suggestions for the treatment of the verbal target text; 4) a discussion on issues of adaptation and transmediation of children’s literature, with suggestions for treating the verbal and pictorial texts in the transposition of O Pudim Mágico from printed to digitised media; based mainly on the studies by Lars Elleström and Ellen McCracken, digital reading devices such as Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad are analysed to conclude that the novel’s target text is deemed to be a translation in print format, a remediation on Kindle and a transmediation on iPad. [en] ANTHOLOGIZING KOREA: AGENTS AND PARATEXTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF KOREAN LITERATURE IN BRAZIL (1985-2022) / [pt] ANTOLOGIZANDO A COREIA: AGENTES E PARATEXTOS NA CONSTRUÇÃO DA LITERATURA COREANA NO BRASIL (1985-2022)

ALEXSANDRO PIZZIOLO RIBEIRO JUNIOR 08 April 2024 (has links)
[en] This Master s thesis proposes the investigation of a corpus of ten anthologies of translated Korean literature published in Brazil between 1985 and 2022. The practice of anthologizing Korean literature translated in Brazil was observed in order to verify the creation of images resulting from the criteria for selecting, translating and presenting this literature, based on an analysis of its paratexts, highlighting the actions of the agents of rewriting. The theoretical basis used comes from Translation Studies, especially the fields of Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) and the Sociology of Translation, and from Paratext Theory. Based on the corpus, it was verified that the act of anthologizing is divided into three attitudes: (1) constructing, in which the criteria for selecting the texts and the context in which the works were published are underlined; (2) designing, in which it is verified how the visual paratext communicates the editorial and translation projects of the anthologies; and (3) framing, in which, through the prefaces, the strategies for producing discourses about Korean literature were identified. In examining the prefaces, the agents highlighted were translators, collaborators and authorities from the target culture, who assume, from their place of discourse production, a fundamental role in the insertion of Korean literature in Brazil. From the 1980s to the 2000s, agents made a central contribution to the publication of this literature through anthologies dedicated to different authors and literary currents. From the 2010s onwards, the anthologies have aligned with current publishing trends in parallel with the growing appreciation of Korean cultural products in Brazil.

Handskriftens materialitet : Studier i den fornsvenska samlingshandskriften Fru Elins bok (Codex Holmiensis D 3) / The Materiality of the Manuscript : Studies in Codex Holmiensis D 3, the Old Swedish Multitext Manuscript Fru Elins bok

Backman, Agnieszka January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation contains a study of the multitext manuscript Codex Holmiensis D 3 based in Material Philology and its focus on the material conditions underlying manuscripts. The aim of the investigation is to describe D 3 in order to increase understanding of its material conditions including content and circumstance of copying, as well as its use and purpose. D 3 contains 14 text works in different genres, for example romances, chronicles, and edifying works. The paper manuscript in the format of a holster book has been dated through its watermarks to around 1487/1488. It was written for the noblewoman Elin Gustavsdotter (Sture). An older manuscript, Codex Holmiensis D 4a, has previously been identified as the exemplar of D 3. These manuscripts are very similar as regards language and content. However, it is shown here that D 4a could not have been the model for D 3 in the case of the romance Flores och Blanzeflor; nor can the manuscript as a whole be a copy of D 4a. There are few traces of use in D 3, but the first work, Herr Ivan Lejonriddaren, has several concluding texts before its final closing. These concluding texts suggest that parts of the work were being read while the rest was being copied. There are also dual quire signatures in this work, implying that the quires were in disarray, possibly because they were in use when the signatures were added. The purpose of D 3 was to educate and provide examples of good and bad behaviour for the nobility. Moreover, there is an owner-epilogue which also stresses courtly ideals and can be linked to the concept of exemplary behaviour. The contents can also be ordered thematically, with first a Carolingian connection, followed by one connected with Ireland and finally one focused on the Christian community. Codicological breaks divide the manuscript into two parts, which leads to the assumption of at least two common exemplars for D 3 and D 4a. An emphasis on the materiality of the manuscript reveals it to be not so much an unwieldy collection of unrelated text witnesses as a book created for a certain person and her time. /
Felaktigt ISBN i den tryckta versionen: 978-91-506-2618-6

Oosthuizen, Mia Magriet 02 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans with Abstracts in Afrikaans, English and isiZulu / In hierdie proefskrif word ondersoek ingestel na die parateks as narratiewe strategie vir toeganklikheid in geselekteerde Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur. / This thesis sets out to illustrate how the paratext can be used as narrative strategy for accessibility in selected Afrikaans children’s and youth fiction. Central to this study is the accessibility of the message in the paratextual and narrative communication situation. In this regard, the central research question is as follows: how can the paratext be used as a narrative strategy to make children’s and youth literature more accessible for young readers? Gérard Genette’s work on the paratext (1997a) and narratology (1983, 1990) serves as the theoretical basis for this study’s conceptual framework, along with the work of Mieke Bal (1991, 2009). In order to define accessibility in terms of the primary target audience, reference is also made to Jauss’s (1982) reception theory. Within the context of this conceptual framework, focus is placed on the receivers, senders and message of the paratextual and narrative communication situation. The receivers are the readers of the paratext as narrative strategy for accessibility and are discussed as the primary, twofold and dual target audiences. The senders are the different writers involved in the creation and implementation of the paratext as narrative strategy for accessibility. Here a distinction is made between the primary writer, the second writer and the secondary writer. Lastly, the message is discussed as it relates to the visual paratext and textual paratext. Through the conceptual framework of this study, along with the different role players and messages of the paratext as narrative strategy for accessibility, this study shows how the paratext as narrative strategy can be used to make children’s and youth literature more accessible for especially the primary target audience. / Le thisisi ihlose ukuveza ukuthi umbhalo ohunyushiwe ungasetshenziswa kanjani njengesu lokuxoxa emibhalweni ekhethiwe yesiBhunu yezingane kanye naleyo yabantu abasha .Okubalulekile kulesi sifundo socwaningo wukutholakala komlayezo wombhalo ohunyushiwe kanye nesimo sokuxhumana ngengxoxo.

Baker, Benjamin Hillel 31 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationship between part and whole in novels by Antoine François Prévost to question the modern assumption that prototypical novelistic narrative structure and dispositive structure (chapters, books, volumes, parts, installments, etc.) share the same points of articulation. In Prévost’s day, the combination of the unpredictable rhythm of publication in installments and the ever-present possibility of continuation made it difficult for authors and readers to identify a novel’s definitive conclusion. This uncertainty led to tension between a novel’s concrete parts and its imagined narrative whole, and that tension created what I have termed a segmentary esthetic that stands in contrast to both the more regularly serialized novels of the nineteenth century and to more recent single-installment novels. To support these hypotheses, I first investigate schemas of interaction between dispositive structure and narrative structure in Prévost’s novels that differ from modern formal expectations: pseudoworks (works-within-works) and narrative units that cross dispositive boundaries in the Mémoires d’un homme de qualité and the Voyages de Robert Lade, and interrupted publication and unauthorized continuation in Cleveland and Mémoires d’un honnête homme. I then identify similar interactions in two of Prévost’s more formally modern novels La Jeunesse du Commandeur and Histoire d’une Grecque moderne. This study shows that unstable boundaries can be compatible with compositional sophistication, and outlines a new method of analysis that can be applied to narrative fiction from other periods and in other media.

Von Angsthasen, Wackelohren und anderen Gestalten. Ostalgie im Bücherregal? : Kinderliteratur der DDR aus aktueller Perspektive

Lembke, Jasmin 04 1900 (has links)
This Master thesis explores the relationship between the reeditions of picture books from the German Democratic Republic (Bode 2002, Richter 2016) and “Ostalgie” (Ahbe 2001/ 2013/2017/2018; Boyer 2006; Haage 2013), a unique and continually evolving brand of collective memory specific to the GDR. Analyzing the paratexts (Genette 2001) of the series Kindergeschichten der DDR (Beltz/KinderbuchVerlag; since 2009), we could distinguish the affected commemorative groups, determine in which way the reeditions refer to the collective memory of East Germany, and show in which way this memory influences the reeditions. With this contribution, the author hopes to enhance the field of research on German children’s literature.

Ordlöv och barrbokstäver : Mening och materialitet i fyra bilderböcker från 00- och 10-tal / Word Leaves and Needle Letters : Meaning and Materiality in Four Picture Books from the 00s and 10s

Nordgren, Sarah January 2020 (has links)
This essay aims to understand how meaning and materiality work in four picture books from the 00s and 10s; Gittan och gråvargarna by Pija Lindenbaum, I skogen by Eva Lindström, Vem ser Dim? by Maria Nilsson Thore and Vi blåste bort ibland by Viveka Sjögren. The essay uses two theoretical works about picture books: Bilderbokens pusselbitar by Maria Nikolajeva and Modernismens bilder – Den moderna bilderboken i Norden by Elina Druker. Questions to lead the analysis are: How can text and picture be understood as materiality? How can meaning be understood as a material-discursive phenomenon? How can reading and meaning be understood as performative processes? The chapter “Diffractions: Differences, Contingencies, and Entanglements That Matter” from Karen Barad’s book Meeting the Universe Halfway – Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning provides help to understand diffraction as a metaphor and methodological attitude. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s understanding of knowledge as performative in the book Touching Feeling – Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity is used to understand the picture book as an act of knowledge and meaning, and reading as a performative process where human involvement cannot be overlooked. The essay problematizes the theoretical texts about picture books by taking on different parts of the picture book’s form and drawing examples from the four chosen picture books. Parts that are examined are divisions of signs in semiotics (and in the picture book theory), the picture book’s limits between for instance framework and content, fiction and reality, and book and reader, mimesis and the analytical problems with looking for truth, the impact of the picture book’s size and shape, and lastly illustration techniques and the influence that illustrator, materiality and reader have on the book. The essay shows how different involvements affect the meaning that is created in the picture book, how solid delimitations of different kinds can be problematic, and how words such as picture, text, paratext and content should be treated gently and consciously. Different ways of breaking with methods and thoughts of habit are presented, for instance by using Barad’s concept of diffraction. The essay ends by emphasizing the complexity that follows meaning, materiality and reading, the responsibility it demands of us and how picture book theory sometimes simplifies analysis. This essay stresses the importance of questioning how the methods and words we use affect what is possible to understand, but not in the sense that we should read in a paranoid and closed way, but rather open minded and with room for failures, reconsiderations and other ways forward. Avsnittet ”Diffractions: Differences, Contingencies, and Entanglements That Matter” ur Karen Barads verk Meeting the Universe Halfway – Quantum Physics and the Entanglement of Matter and Meaning fungerar som hjälp för att förstå diffraktion som metafor och metodologisk hållning.
