A way of computer use in mathematics teaching -The effectiveness that visualization brings-

Yamamoto, Shuichi, Ishii, Naonori 22 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
We report a class of the mathematics in which an animation technology (calculating and plotting capabilities) of the software Mathematica is utilized. This class is taught for university students in a computer laboratory during a second semester. It is our purpose to make a student realize the usefulness and the importance of mathematics easily through visualization. In addition, we hope that students will acquire a new power of mathematics needed in the 21st century. For several years, we have continued this kind of class, and have continued to investigate the effectiveness that our teaching method (especially visualization) brings in the understanding of the mathematics. In this paper, we present some of this teaching method, which is performed in our class. From the questionnaire survey, it is found that our teaching method not only convinces students that the mathematics is useful or important but also deepens the mathematic understanding of students more.

Sandomirskaja, Ekaterina January 2017 (has links)
The Swedish artist Ulla Wiggen (b. 1942) started her artistic career in the early 1960s with detailed paintings of the insides of early electronic devices. In the early 2010s she turned to the interior of the body in the series Intra where organs and cells are fictionally combined. Here, she used a similar pictorial style as in the electronic paintings. This thesis seeks to analyze the relationships and tensions between body and machine that are found in Wiggen’s works. Questions are posed about the relationship between scientific and artistic imagery, as well as the role that fiction plays in knowledge-producing representation. This thesis looks to Wiggen’s use of the grid and connects it to historical and modernist images by showing its inherited paradoxical relation between rationality and spirituality. Through the anatomical picture, focusing on the Renaissance and Rationalism, this thesis explores the meanings of portraying bodies in cross-section. The role of the opened body has been oscillating between a body filled with spiritual meaning to a divided body, seen as an object for knowledge production. By using Donna Haraway’s figurations of the hybrid and the cyborg, the text proposes to re-think dualistic tensions between the human and the machine, science and fiction, realism and magic in Ulla Wiggen’s works. Through this perspective and post-humanist theory, it becomes clear that these boundaries have always been in flux. Instead of thinking either machines or bodies, the thesis suggests that we see the two series of Ulla Wiggen’s works as hybrid constructions that are both body-machines and machine-bodies.

Användning av bilder och modaliteter under högläsning i årskurs 1–3 / The Use of Pictures and Modalities During Reading Aloud in Grades 1–3

G. Wikström, Sanna January 2018 (has links)

The impact of decorative pictures on learning with media / Der Einfluss dekorativer Bilder auf das Lernen mit Medien

Schneider, Sascha 09 August 2017 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aimed at examining the impact of decorative pictures, defined as pictures which make an instructional material aesthetically appealing rather than conveying information for learning. In research, the use of decorative pictures was considered to be detrimental for learning for a long time. In contrast, recent research revealed that the impact of these pictures is moderated by a number of variables. In a series of experiments which were based on cognitive-affective theories of learning with media, a selected number of theoretically derived moderators were examined in a series of experiments. A first experiment (N1 = 82) investigat-ed the effectiveness of different levels of emotional charge (positive vs. negative) and the impact of different contexts (learning context vs. leisure time context) shown in decorative pictures. Results showed that learning performance was higher for positive than negative pictures, while the measured pleasure of students mediated this effect. Decorative pictures showing a learning context were also found to enhance learning while the students’ assessments of arousal and dominance were raised for these pictures. In a second experiment (N2 = 81), design features of anthropomorphism, defined as features which elicit the tendency to attribute human characteristics to non-human objects, were implemented in decorative pictures. Based on a two-factorial design with the inclusion of human faces (present vs. absent) and personalized labels (present vs. absent), both human faces and personalized labels were found to foster learning. In comparison to a control group without decorative pictures (experiment 3; N3 = 102), the inclusion of both mentioned anthropomorphic features in decorative pictures led to a higher learning performance. In contrast, decorative pictures without anthropomorphic features decreased learning. Both features additionally enhanced the mental effort and intrinsic motivation of students, although a task-irrelevant cognitive load was increased by the inclusion of decorative pictures. The emotional charge (positive vs. negative) and the degree of text-picture connectedness (weakly vs. strongly) of decorative pictures were additionally examined in three other experiments (N4 = 108, N5 = 86, N6 = 162). Moreover, these groups were compared with an additional control group without decorative pictures. All three experiments revealed that decorative pictures with a strong connection to the learning topic of a text and a positive charge increased learning. In comparison with the control group, positive, strongly connected pictures mainly enhanced and negative, weakly connected pictures mainly impaired learning. Results can be explained by significant differences among the assessment of cognitive processes of learners. In conclusion, decorative pictures may be used in order to enrich an instructional material if boundary conditions like the context-relatedness, the degree of anthropomorphism, the text-picture connectedness, and the emotional charge are taken into account.

: En analys av lågprispizzeriors design av menyer / Does the digital pizza menu have a thoughtful style? : An analysis of low-price pizzerias design of menus

Ericson, Jessica, Hammam, Aurora January 2020 (has links)
For the creation of restaurant menus there are studies that show which recommendations you should use to achieve a well-designed menu. The purpose of the study is to investigate whether pizzeria personnel and designers create digital pizza menus consciously from the design recommendations that exists. This study is a qualitative research work and we have used a survey as strategy. Data collection methods that have been used to answer the study questions are literature search, a visual content analysis, group interviews and semi-structured interviews. One result from the interviews showed that the pizzeria personnel thinks that their menu design does not match their brand. The pizzeria personnel and customers have different perceptions about what the brand stands for. The group interviews show that the digital menus live up to customers expectation and their experience of the low-price pizza. The conclusions show that there are common and distinctive graphical elements. Most low-price pizzerias do not have a well thought out branding, although the pizzeria personnel and designers do not have consciousness regarding the design principles and recommendations.

Botaniska teckningar och fotografier : En innehållsanalys / Botanical Illustrations and Photographs : a content analysis

Kronsell, Caroline January 2021 (has links)
Botanical images have been an important part of medicine and science since ancient times and they still have an established place in our society in the form of flora, fauna and other educational materials. The big change that has taken place is the transition from drawings to photographs and in this essay I take a closer look at how contemporary botanical images are structured and compare drawings and illustrations from the perspective of visual communication. I use a qualitative content analysis coded with keywords taken from, among other things, cognitive theory and representation theory. The results indicate that the choice of media form is less decisive from a visual communicative perspective and that the media forms share the same strengths and weaknesses.

Normbrytande reklam : En multimodal studie av hur språkliga och visuella resurser används i normbrytande reklam

Björkqvist, Jenni January 2019 (has links)
This study examines two norm-breaking advertising campaigns. Through a sociosemiotic multimodal analysis I have examined a selection of advertising images from two norm-breaking campaigns: Försvarsmakten’s campaign Kom som du är and Arbetsförmedlingen’s campaignGör plats. The purpose of this study was to create a deeper understanding of how norm-breaking advertisement uses verbal and visual resources to affect attitudes and prejudices. To answer this purpose, the study has been based on the following questions: How are prominent participants constructed in norm-breaking advertising? How does image and text interact in order to change attitudes and prejudices? How does the presentation of the prominent participants in the advertising images relate to the overall purpose of the campaign? The result of this study indicates that there are patterns regarding how verbal and visual resources are used in the analyzed norm-breaking advertising images. The overall result shows that how the participants are portrayed makes the advertising images both demanding, contact- creating and engaging. Text and image interact in such a way that they both strengthen and complement each other and together they express demands that point toward a desired attitude and social change. The advertising images contains different people represented in a non- stereotyped way which relates well to the overall purpose of the campaigns.
