This work describes and interprets how the communicative competence was developed while teaching and learning Spanish as a foreign language to students who first language was Portuguese. This process of teaching and learning was orientated by a ¿communicative intercultural¿ approach that worked as a ¿potential force¿ and established the guidelines of learning and teaching the foreign language. It was necessary to plan a course to develop a kind of interactive language learning process for using and acquiring the new language. Focus on classroom as a social setting, it was constructed a socio-historical communicative environment ¿real -maravilhoso¿ (Carpentier, 1977) to teach and learn Spanish in an University in the southeast of Brazil. There were analyzed and interpreted 44 samples of tasks during the period between 2003 and 2005 throughout the six editions of the course. The results evidenced that the communicative competence was achieved through a kind of interactive process that was characterized for the students' ¿strong desire¿ of using, producing and sharing meaning in the foreign language produced by ¿the fascination¿ for the topic. There were recognized three features of this maintained classroom interaction that was nominated as expansion, depth and identity. From the data we have collected we could realize that this work not only pretended to be a progress report on what happened in the Spanish foreign classroom as a context for the language of teaching and learning but also focused how an authentic and real ¿vivid interaction¿ was developed between a teacher and her students as a step to get a non idealized communicative competence. It was taken into consideration the socio-historical and cultural background of the Portuguese students learning Spanish as foreign language in Brazil / Doutorado / Lingua Estrangeira / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

A comparative study of the variables contributing towards the establishment of a learning culture in schools

Sedibe, Mabatho 17 November 2006 (has links)
The establishment of a culture of teaching and learning in disadvantaged high schools is a challenging phenomenon since the inception of the new democratic South Africa. This study attempts to investigate variables contributing towards the establishment of a culture of teaching and learning in high schools. It is revealed through literature study that some investigations into this research topic has already been done in South Africa, but little if none is done in the disadvantaged high schools in the North-West Province, that is the reason why I was prompted to pursue this topic further. The high failure rate in Grade 12 results according to my opinion is a serious concern and is on the lips of every teacher, learner, parent, politician and relevant stakeholders. This high failure rate is, according to the findings from the literature review, caused by factors such as underqualified and unqualified teachers, inadequate resources, over-crowded classrooms, poor infra-structures (buildings), poor socio economic background of learners’ parents, inconducive environment at school and inadequate role played by teachers and learners in the teaching and learning situation. One expects that the majority of disadvantaged schools would have achieved above the 70% as the pass rate benchmark in the final Grade 12 examinations. However, in most schools in the disadvantaged area this is not the case. Based on the above statement and the complexity of the study in consultation with variables employed, I opted to use both quantitative and qualitative research designs with an aim to attempt to obtain consistency, validity and reliability of the research results. The analyses of the results reveal that most disadvantaged schools still experience a poor culture of teaching and learning. This is evidenced by low Grade 12 pass rate results in some of the provinces, including North-West. The research revealed that the variables impacting on the performance of learners at schools are subjected to a complexity of integrated activities many of which are difficult to isolate as predominantly responsible for poor performance as such. What does appear to be an issue of concern is the apparent lack of dedication one would expect from some teachers working with secondary school learners. One could conclude from the many responses that poor achievement is directly linked to poor teaching and that the latter would again be the result of poor qualifications, lack of resources, poor support systems and most important however, a lack of commitment and dedication needed to ensure a professional approach towards classroom management and teaching. / Dissertation (PhD (Curriculum and Instructional Design and Development))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

Matematisk elasticitet en väg ut ur matematiksvårigheter : En intervjustudie på vuxna elever / Mathematical resillience as a path out of mathematical difficulties : an interview study on adult students

Broström, Christer January 2019 (has links)
How do the mathematics teacher together with the special teacher get pupils to struggle after repeated failures? Mathematical resilience could be the answer. In a Swedish context this is something needed to develop pupils in mathematics. One way out of this is to focus on three important themes: value, struggle and growth. From this it develops four different knowledges such as having a growth mindset, mathematics can be valuable, struggle and support to stay in the growth zone. Seven persons were interviewed using semi structured interviews. Selected quotes were sorted in seven categories as follows: time, negative feelings, positive feelings, motivation, extern-, intern-environment and treatment. The study shows that if a pupil has difficulties with mathematics things are not hopeless. There were pupils with intrinsic motivation who succeeded after several failures with the help of mathematical resilience. This is valuable to know for special teachers. The math teachers at the adult-school was not aware of that they worked with mathematic resilience, but instinctively they did.

Degree Project with Specialization in English Studies and Education : Teaching Strategies to Overcome EFL Pupils` Speaking Anxiety

Haji, Sanaa, Jejo, Sara January 2021 (has links)
Gibbons (2015) writes that speaking is considered as the most important skill in language learning. However, Lundahl (2014) states that there are some pupils, in year 4-6, in Sweden who do not speak during the English lessons. Thus, the aim of this study is to find out what the reasons behind EFL pupils' unwillingness to speak English are. Furthermore, teaching strategies to overcome pupils' speaking anxiety are investigated. There are many studies that investigate the underlying reasons. The data collection, for this thesis, consists of interviews with some student-teachers at Malmö University. The results showed that traditional teaching methods along with fear of making linguistic errors are two of the main reasons. In addition, negative evaluation from peers and fear of producing grammatically incorrect sentences are also factors that contribute to some pupils’ anxiety over speaking English. According to our interviewees, the implementation of a safe, supportive and communicative environment in the classroom is crucial for encouraging and motivating pupils in language learning. Providing different authentic communicative tasks, songs, stories, and games that are related to pupils' lives and interests, as well as their needs and knowledge levels, are some of the strategies employed by some teachers.

Empatie učitele a žáků / The teacher's and the pupils' empathy

Kryllová, Kateřina January 2021 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the teacher's and the pupils' skill of empathy and its connection to the effectiveness of the learning process. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author defines empathy and states the issue of its definition. The author also focuses on the topic of development of empathy and how it is connected to the safe classroom environment. Also, the factors that influence the level of empathy within a person are explained. The thesis describes the role of empathy in the communication of a teacher and the pupils and how communication blocks obstruct expressions of empathy. The influence of empathy in the educational process is described on areas where emotions of the pupils play a key role. The thesis describes the possibilities of the teacher's development of empathy as well as practices that allow this development with the students of first five grades in elementary school. The aim of the empirical part is to find out how the future teachers view empathy. The research is aimed at finding out how students of education define empathy, whether they think it can be cultivated, whether teachers can influence the level of empathy of their students and if so, how. The second aim of the empirical part is to create and teach a lecture that would bring a deeper understanding of...

Teaching Outside the Box: Student and Teacher Perceptions of Flexible Learning Environments Outside the 21st Century Classroom

Allison, Chelsea B. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to ascertain student and teacher perceptions of the environment in which student learning takes place and their perceptions of how it has helped them in the cognitive and social domains. Data collected were through student and teacher perception surveys, student and teacher perception questionnaires, classroom observations, student focus group discussions, and teacher interviews. Themes that emerged from the data sources were student interactions, students' autonomy in personalizing their learning space, teacher perceptions of comfort in the classroom, and student perceptions of comfort in the classroom. The findings of this study point to four recommendations for educational leaders to ensure the effective implementation of new and dynamic learning spaces: (1) consult and support teacher and students, (2) provide professional development, (3) visit campuses and other learning spaces, and (4) add color. In order for real change to take place, teachers need to enquire about and embrace student preferences and allow for the discomfort that will be present when trying something new. Teachers must be willing to relinquish control of the learning experience for the student in order to allow for possibilities in personalized learning on the part of the student. They must risk initial failure in order to allow for greater successes in the long run.

The social status of the over-age child in a sixth grade

Unknown Date (has links)
Although there are many studies of the results of non-promotion, few sociometric studies have been made which show that the over-age child is not accepted by his younger classmates. What happens, then, when a child is older than his age group? What are the effects on the social status of the overage child? The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to investigate the social acceptance status of the over-age child in a sixth grade classroom. / Typescript. / "A Paper." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / "August, 1957." / Advisor: Sarah Lou Hammond, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references.

Vägar till ett muntligt aktivt klassrum : En systematisk litteraturöversikt med fokus på tystlåtna elever / Roads to an orally active classroom. : A systematic literature review focusing on quiet pupils.

Redin, Victor, Bilge, Dilan January 2020 (has links)

The impact of the classroom environment and working methods on students' oral ability : An empirical study from a teacher's perspective

Causevic, Mirsada, Salomonsson, Desirée January 2020 (has links)
