Tillfälliga öar : – tillsammans med havet i materiell-diskursiva praktiker / Temporary Islands

Krohn, Anton, Petersson, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
In this Bachelor thesis we aim to establish a conversation with the sea. With Karen Barads posthumanist performativity, agential realism, as our companion we aim to challenge the anthropocentric role of the designer. In doing this we question the view of materiality as passive and the designer as the sole creator of meaning in the design process.  With Barads onto-epistemological standpoint we explore how the process of design is enacted in a performance of human and non-human actors, where meaning is negotiated through relations within phenomena. By putting this posthumanist notion into practice through playful experiments together-with-the-sea, we can understand how meaning is situated and shaped within the material-discursive phenomenas and apparatuses that is, and is part of, the design process.  We understand the design process as an intervening in the world’s becoming. An intervening where an assemblage of actors stands as co-creators and where meaning, bodies, subject and object is enacted and co-shaped through intra-action. This perspective gives us an awareness of our responsibility to intervene in the world’s becoming and our accountability for the bodies produced, an ethics in action.

“That will be your home” : Resettlement preparations for children and youth from the Horn of Africa

Muftee, Mehek January 2014 (has links)
This thesis analyzes how children and youth being resettled from Kenya and Sudan were prepared for their upcoming resettlement to Sweden, through cultural orientation programs (COPs). COPs are held for refugees who have been granted permanent Swedish residence and are undergoing resettlement to Sweden. The Swedish Migration Board, in charge of resettlement, carries out COPs as a means to inform and prepare refugees for the move to Sweden. This thesis is based on ethnographic work carried out during COPs held in Kenya and Sudan in 2011. Through video-based observation of the meetings between the Swedish delegations and children and youth, current thesis examines what notions of resettlement and refugeeness inform the delegations work, and how does the children’s agency come about during these meetings? The thesis includes three articles. Article 1 examines how the delegations make use of images in order to establish certain ideas of Sweden and the ideal citizen specifically tailored for the group being resettled. Article 2 explores children’s agency within the COPs, focusing on how the children and youth manage the meetings and sometimes resisting being positioned in certain ways by the delegations. Article 3 analyzes how notions of gender equality are drawn upon by the delegations during their work, a topic frequently highlighted by the delegations in various implicit and dilemmatic ways. The thesis shows how the delegations’ work is carried out in paradoxical ways. Their quest to bring forth the ideal future as a means to instill hope among the children simultaneously ends up categorizing them as different and as others. The representatives draw  n ideas that the children need to be socialized in order to be incorporated into another “us”.

Safety in the making : studies on the discursive construction of risk and safety in the chemical industry

Rasmussen, Joel January 2010 (has links)
This compilation thesis aims to analyse how risk and safety are constructed, reproduced, and negotiated by communicative means in safety-critical workplaces. It conceptualizes these communicative moments of shaping and reshaping risk and safety as enmeshed in multiple forms of governing. That is, the management of risk and safety may not only be an employer’s responsibility delegated by the State, in a welfarist fashion, but may take different forms through a variety of institutional practices and communicative means. These defining practices seem particularly urgent to study, since it is through them that the locus of risk may be moved from one type of area or object to another, that attention is or is not paid to certain conditions of human exposure, and that parties are appointed responsible for safety measures. The thesis centres on three safety-critical factories located in Sweden that handle corrosive and/or explosive chemicals. It analyses interviews with various employees as well as recorded talk at a safety committee meeting. Previous research has addressed the existence of a tension between a strategy of individual responsibility and one of collective protection. This study makes a further contribution by demonstrating how these traditions are advocated and negotiated in discourse, and the dilemmas that emerge in the process. Although the study demonstrates that a discourse of collective prevention is reflected and reproduced in some narratives, it also makes evident that a great deal of responsibility is placed on the individual worker to avoid risk. The analysis has been able to show that this is due to the co-presence of traditional, hierarchical advice-giving and self-reproach, which amplify the importance of workers conducting themselves with greater caution, and of those newer concepts and technologies for worker involvement and responsibilization which are implemented in line with neoliberal ideas of human resources utilization.  Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates how employees’ risk and safety discourse exposes dilemmas, especially when, consciously or not, egalitarian norms are taken into account. For instance, the moralizing elements of behavioural discourse are regularly supplemented by mitigating, pronominal, or entirely agentless discursive choices, and thus by an anticipatory display of awareness of egalitarian norms. It is argued that this discoursal softening of workers’ risk responsibilities helps condition the sustained prevalence of a behavioural approach to risk and safety. It also exposes some of its fragility.

Understanding the Role of Mathematical Anxiety, Disaffect and Emotion in Learning and Teaching the Subject of Mathematics : A Qualitative Study of Swedish Student Teachers’ Experiences and Feelings towards Mathematics Education

Shamoon, Stephanie January 2014 (has links)
Alongside the international consensus about the importance of mathematical competencies in today’s knowledge society, the awareness about children’s and adult’s mathematical anxiety has increased. Within this, relatively limited, field of research it has moreover been revealed that the level of mathematical anxiety is considerably higher among students within teacher education programs compared to other university students. Furthermore, the studies suggest that the anxiety of prospective teachers may influence their performance in the classroom and in turn their pupils’ perception of mathematics. In the case of Sweden, the PISA 2012 revealed a significant increase of mathematical anxiety among Swedish 15 year old pupils in the past ten years. With this background, the purpose of this study is to investigate prospective teachers’ feelings and experiences towards the subject of mathematics where the aim is to gain a deeper understanding about negative feelings, such as mathematical anxiety. Based on a qualitative research approach, including a survey with around 100 Swedish student teachers, interviews and a focus group session with a smaller group, the findings of the study have shown that the majority of the participants have in different ways experienced negative feelings towards mathematics. With support in poststructuralist theories, where emotions are viewed as a social construction, the study indicates that feelings emerge when students position themselves, or become positioned, within discursive practices. The concept of subjectivity was further used to gain a deeper understanding of students’ process in becoming a teacher.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DissRRC.pdf: 3194270 bytes, checksum: e97f735d0326fb94dcbca5e58a470045 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-24 / Não recebi financiamento / The way new discursive materialities work in advertising media is our focus in this work, being our main objective to analyze how these materialities reflect in discursive practices that are constructed and reinforced in the scope of media texts, specifically in commercials. To that end, we based our theoretical-methodological approach in the Franco-Brazilian Discourse Analysis, especially with the contributions of Michel Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi, also using the theoretical contribution of the studies of Michel Foucault and Debord, in order to understand the exercise of power through the mediatic discourse, in which we understand that there is the control of the speech due to economic, social and political ends that reinforce the relations of force inside the social practices, affecting ideologically the subjects, who are immersed in the symbolic and spectacular representations in advertising speech. Our object of study consists of seven commercials, two of them of women‟s underwear by the brand Duloren, three of them of beer by the brands Antarctica and Devassa and the remaining two of the Motel Lemon. Our analysis was made from four discursive sequences, in which we analyzed the slogans, the images (color and layout), the physical and ideological positioning of the female image and the title. We understand that these elements, common in the construction of advertising, constitute the ideological, social and historical mark that inscribes the subject in different discursive formations, retake forgotten discourses in the imaginary and reconstruct them under other conditions of production, questioning the subjects and making them identify with the ideological formation that is conveyed by the product / service being sold. The considerations derived from this research led us to reflect on these effects of meanings, which tend to represent women, through certain discursive practices that evidence a confrontation of discourses and accentuate other discourses that are reconstructed and reformulated in an apparent new discursive event. Thus, it is necessary to consider the media not only as a means of information, but as a strong ideological instrument that reproduces recurrent discursive practices that are the reflection of the devaluation of the female figure, due to a socio-historical condition and reinforced by the market industry. However, there is resistance in the effects of meanings that are reproduced in commercials, since there is no single meaning that stabilizes in this object.

Analyse des échanges en ligne dans un groupe de pratique du français sur Facebook / Analysis of online exchanges in a French practice group on Facebook

Aljerbi Asad, Nahla 09 March 2018 (has links)
This study focuses on French as a Foreign Language (FFL) and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). It investigates the natural exchanges of Libyan learners practicing French in a Facebook group. The situation that we are exploring is informal because the group was created by the participants themselves without any intervention neither from teachers nor from ourselves. Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has already been well studied in formal contexts but very little in informal contexts, which is why we think a descriptive study aimed at gaining an understanding of particular experience is suitable. Our data is on-line exchanges corpora covering five months with 947 posts and 3408 comments, as well as 11 interviews conducted with some of the participants in the observed group. The research is based on an ecological analysis to study exchanges in a wider environment where several factors interact (linguistic, social, cultural, political factors). In order to examine what happens in this informal space dedicated to the practice of French, we first provideda broad description of learners’ discursive practices in order to get a general sense of their activities. The languages used, the functions of the language used by the messages, the way in which the messages and comments respond (or do not respond) to each other and finally the semio-linguistic characteristics of the exchanges were examined. We then explored how these practices contribute to the establishment of social ties, whether a virtual community emerges and what kind of community it is. Finally, we looked at the value that participants attach to their exchanges and experience as members of this group.

In it, I propose, in general terms, to analyze the discursive practices present in narratives of black male and female teachers when they look for their social insertion into different social contexts, identifying outbreaks of resistance that are present in their process of ethnicracial identities. The fundamental issue that permeates the survey investigates: how can black male and female teachers behave discursively in the construction of ethnicracial identities in multiple distinct contexts? The theoretical foundations that support this research work come from theoretical fields that complement each other; among them, French Discourse Analysis, Foucault s Theory and cultural studies. These, even with their singularities, are being interlaced by the conception that conceives language as social practice. Methodologically, I adopt an interpretative and qualitative paradigm to examine not only the linguistic repertoires that compose these teachers written narratives written but also the data that were generated by semi-structured interviews. The results show that the subjects, realizing contrary forces that interfere in their process of social inclusion, make use of acetic techniques to (re)signify the history of their lives / Nessa pesquisa em que discuto a constitui??o discursiva de identidades ?tnicorraciais de docentes negros e negras, parto da compreens?o de que o processo de forma??o identit?ria do sujeito abrange tanto a ?rea pessoal/familiar quanto ? social/profissional.

Problematizes how the teacher s subjectivities are produced facing the discourse of truth, which effects establishes a program for autonomist professional development in a perspective of neo-liberal governmentality. Then from this uneasiness arises some requisite questions: in the new century how teacher s subjectivities are discursively produced in magazine s sections Nova Escola during those five years of governmentality? In which perspective the discourses throughout government documents in related with professional development reflect in the linguistic-discursive repertories adopted by Nova Escola? How the experts belonging to the cadre from and/or guests from the magazine, seeking equip discursive the teacher s subjectivities for the XXI Century? Therefore, this paper objective is to examine the linguistics strategies used to produce these subjectivities at magazine s sections, what it admittedly teaches another method how to be teacher; and also it analyzes the discursive practices that compound and set boundaries to the autonomist professional development proposed by sections the magazine; describe technologies used by experts to equip and conduct of conduct the teacher to govern the self. This research is inserted theoretically in the field of Applied Linguistis, to the Cultural Studies and about the contribution of Michel Foucault s theories and methodologically in the perspective discursive interpretative. The results seek to show that the teacher s subjectivities are produced by many technologies of the self, traversed by government discourses and ratified by discursive practices of the magazine s experts. That discourse, without any oppressing or authoritarian connotation, opens space for practice of Freedom and self guiding to both constitute the subjectivity process of the teacher in the XXI Century s path / Esta tese toma como objeto de estudo a constitui??o discursiva de subjetividades do professor em pr?ticas que permeiam se??es da Revista Nova Escola entre os anos 2000 e 2005.

Much more than just a sport, so this game is a cultural phenomenon par excellence, bearing a communicational and aesthetic dimension whose occurrence has been spotted in various fields of scientific and cultural. Therefore, it is as game and as a phenomenon of culture, we intend to focus on football here as an object of study. Our aim is to investigate the sport in Brazil taking the Literature and Journalism as privileged instances of their representation in the media. Thus, the central idea of this research is to show when and how football has become a recurrent theme in Brazilian literature, starting with its journalistic approach until we get an overview of the aesthetic representation of the game, Literature as the main focus of attention and taking the genre of fiction story as material fact of their representation. With this approach, we intend to develop an overall view, overview of the literature about football in our country and at the same time, particularize this vision in some representative authors of it, like the writer-journalist Mario Filho (the historian, essayist on the modernization of chronic specific theme), Jos? Lins do Rego (writer passionate about the game), Nelson Rodrigues (the esthetician that elevated the sport to the status of art by chronic), Lima Barreto (who along with Antonio de Alcantara Machado pioneered the formalized within the fiction) and the storytellers of the topic itself. In the end, we intend to infer the results of evaluations and reviews of books and authors listed, we have examined a wide sense, but also vertical (and which were focused on a socio-historical perspective and critical-aesthetic) within the assumption that seems be a homology between the way football practice amongst us will historically winning characteristics as to form a Brazilian school of football, and how our writers, journalists will be addressing the topic, which also would focus on creating a "Brazilian way" of telling literary football. The proof of this hypothesis operational work together with the development of historiography and the necessity arising from it, creating a "Guide to Reading football theme in fictional tale of Brazil" shut the focal perspective of this study / O futebol, entendido como um fen?meno esportivo de pr?tica e abrang?ncia quase universais, pode tamb?m ser visto como um jogo cujo funcionamento contorna o universo cultural dos povos que o praticam.

As conclusÃes apresentadas evidenciam disputas travadas em torno da legitimidade dos sentidos atribuÃdos Ãs manifestaÃÃes culturais afro-brasileiras, configurando assim, lutas de representaÃÃes entre os movimentos negros e os agentes que operam tais prÃticas de apropriaÃÃo / This research aims to understand the discussion about cultural appropriation and black aesthetics in the brazilian context and how it is expressed in the articles published by GeledÃs â Instituto da Mulher Negra, on the cyberspace. These investigations are guided by the attempt to understand the notion of cultural appropriation used in the discussions, indentify agents that operate appropriation practices and constitutive elements of these debates. The research corpus is made of a collection and analysis of eighteen articles published by the Instituto, trying to rebuild the perception about the observed phenomenon. Hence, it is a qualitative research because of itâs goals of exploring discursive practices and meanings shared in each one of the selected articles, identifying the construction of social representations around the idea of cultural appropriation from black aesthetics. The general hypothesis is that the appropriation practices here investigated are associated to the emptying of the original meaning assigned to some afro-brazilian cultural manifestations. This empyting is performed by Stateâs actions, that converts ethnic elements in national symbols, by marketâs action, that turns these elements in exotic goods, and by peopleâs actions, that rework, among different perceptions, the original meanings of such cultural manifestations. From this, it was inferred that there are conflicts around the legitimacy of meanings assigned to afro-brazilian cultural manifestations, setting representation disputes between the black movements and agents that operate these appropriation practices.
