The artist discusses the process of discovery that led to her Master of Fine Arts exhibition at Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, from March 19 to 23, 2007. Investigations in printmaking, mixed media, and symbol are highlighted. The work for the thesis show consists of nineteen, 30" hand pulled works on paper. All works are oriented vertically and floated in the frame. Of this collection, thirteen are monotypes, four are collographs, and one is a collage. Insertions include intaglio, brayer marking, encaustic wax, paper, oil paint, pen, and sumi ink. Topics included are the artist's thinking into the nature of creativity and the potential for art to speak into culture. The artist discusses some of her own process in this discovery exploring landscape, symbol, and abstraction. Included are a few contextual earlier landscapes of the artist's, some examples of discovery, and a catalogue of the final thesis show.

[pt] DA GRADUAÇÃO À PROFISSÃO: A PRÁTICA DE PROJETO EM DESIGN GRÁFICO ENTRE OS AMBIENTES ACADÊMICOS E PROFISSIONAIS / [en] FROM GRADUATION TO PROFESSION: THE GRAPHIC DESIGN PRACTICE BETWEEN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENTSLUCAS FERREIRA LUCCAS 08 May 2023 (has links)
[en] The design field was historically shaped by epistemological and cultural
gaps that separated academic education and professional practice. To
investigate the transition between graduation and career in design, the research
main objective was to understand how design practice compares in both
environments through the perspectives of graduated professionals. From
literature research, the concept of project in the field of design, its paradigms in
higher education, its relations with professional practice and the social issues
that permeate them were discussed. In addition, in-depth semi structured
interviews and an open question survey were applied to professionals designers
with distinct profiles and experiences. It was possible to conclude from
comparing the data analysis with literature that one of the biggest challenges for
designers in training is the alignment between their personal profiles with the
universities and companies profiles.

Educational Handheld Video: Examining Shot Composition, Graphic Design, And Their Impact On LearningHutchens, Jason 01 January 2008 (has links)
Formal features of video such as shot composition and graphic design can weigh heavily on the success or failure of educational videos. Many studies have assessed the proper use of these techniques given the psychological expectations that viewers have for video programming (Hawkins et al., 2002; Kenny, 2002; Lang, Zhou, Schwardtz, Bolls, & Potter, 2000; McCain, Chilberg, & Wakshlag, 1977; McCain & Repensky, 1972; Miller, 2005; Morris, 1984; Roe, 1998; Schmitt, Anderson, & Collins, 1999; Sherman & Etling, 1991; Tannenbaum & Fosdick, 1960; Wagner, 1953). This study examined formal features within the context of the newly emerging distribution method of viewing video productions on mobile handheld devices. Shot composition and graphic design were examined in the context of an educational video to measure whether or not they had any influence on user perceptions of learning and learning outcomes. The two formal features were modified for display on 24 inch screens and on 3.5 inch or smaller screens. Participants were shown one of the four modified treatments, then presented with a test to measure whether or not the modified formal features had any impact or influence on learning outcomes from a sample of 132 undergraduate college students. No significant differences were found to occur as a result of manipulation of formal features between the treatment groups.

Bilderböcker för färgblinda barn : En studie i tillgänglig design / Picturebooks for colorblind children : A study in accessible designLundqvist, Fanny January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate accessibility in visual paratexts of picturebooks in relation to color blindness, to identify qualities that fulfill criterias for accessibility and functionality. The number of children with color blindness is greater than shown in statistics. Color is widely used in preschools and not percieving color correctly can be misinterpreted as difficulties in learning or concentration, indicating the importance of accessible use of color in media that children interact with. The study is conducted within a theoretical framework in which the concepts of design-for-all and visual paratext are central. Previous research on picturebooks as a medium for teaching as well as children’s development provides an additional theoretical foundation for answering the research questions: how do contemporary picturebooks correspond to criterias for color accessibility and functionality – and how can picturebooks be made accessible for colorblind children without losing functional qualities? The study is carried out with qualitative research methods in two case studies, based on analysis and systematic observations of the visual paratexts in four picturebooks, two of which are explicitly marketed as ‘accessible’ whilst the remaining two are not. Having identified and assessed qualities of the visual paratexts, results show that the ‘accessible’ picturebooks overall did not fulfill accessibility nor functionality criterias, while the other two had significantly higher qualities in functionality. In conclusion, beneficial qualities were use of high contrast, tactile and graphic textures, expressive faces, as well as the use of blues and yellows.

Designers Krav på Midjourney : En Studie om Integrationen av Bildgenererande AI i Grafiska Formgivares Arbetsprocess / Designers Requirements for Midjourney : A Study about the Integration of Image-Generating AI in Graphic Designers Work ProcessBruhn, Lukas, Algelin, Max January 2024 (has links)
Text-to-image generation is one of the most significant technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) during recent years, with the software Midjourney being amongst the most popular tools for this purpose. There is however some uncertainty about how tools like Midjourney will impact and integrate with creative professions, such as graphic design. To successfully integrate graphic designers with image-generating software, it is necessary for the tools to be designed according to the needs of their design process. This study, therefore, examines the requirements graphic designers have for Midjourney to be integrated into the idea generation phase of their design process. Requirements were gathered through interviews, which were then prioritized through surveys. A comprehensive list of requirements was formulated based on these findings. An analysis of the results was also conducted to analyze the prioritization of each individual requirement. The results highlight areas of improvement in Midjourney, with a focus on control and usability. The discussion explores factors that could have influenced the validity of the results, along with a reflection on the study's implementation. Finally, the conclusion of the study outlines the key improvements needed for Midjourney according to the results and suggests directions for future research within the research area.

The Bad Design Anthology : Ett arbete om vitt privilegium / The Bad Design Anthology : A thesis project about white privilegeBorg, Emilia January 2022 (has links)
We all grow up in different conditions, with differentiatingexperiences in a society founded upon the samerules, guidelines, and standards that are still exercised todayand which we as people are more or less forced to liveby. With social structures so tightly wound around theseguidelines it can sometimes be difficult to know how onemight behave and relate when those same guidelines onone hand serve as an advantage for some while beingdetrimental and harmful to others. This was something I was not fully aware of until the BlackLives Matter movement called for justice following themurder of George Floyd during the summer of 2020. TheBLM-movement spread, protests ensued on a global scale, and social media exploded showcasing black squaresand people expressing themselves regarding both pastand ongoing racism. My work has focused on observing the role graphic designplays in the continued establishment of the guidelinesand rules making the elimination of racism impossible. In an attempt to also demonstrate it’s no longerenough to say: "I am not racist".
