This work attempt to investigate how the body modifications done by the subjects of the transsexualities can give a different meaning to the correspondence among sex, gender, sexual orientacion and desire, being able to generate new matrixes of intelligibility from the identities and multiple strategies used by crossdressers, drag queens, travestities and transexuals. For this, the we made the research using the participant observation and semi-structured interview technique in spaces of sociability of transexualities on downtown Recife. Moreover, we collate some medical, psychoanalytical, and human sciences theories with empirical data collected. After that we have a brief theorical passage through the sex, gender, body, sexuality, speech and subjectivity's conceptions that take us to discussions about representations and performance, setting up the basis of a transexualities experience.

The investigation is instigated by two assumptions: 1) understanding the mainstream media as an institution integrated, and originated, in the capitalist system, it is the focus of complex struggles of/for power to influence the production of meanings and social representations – i.e., its a privileged space for the recognition of (in)existence and (in)visibility of voices, themes and worlds, thus collaborating in the reconstruction of reality; 2) in Brazilian society, transgender people are one of the political/identity groups that, on daily bases, experience social marginalization – structural, many of the transphobic/ cissexists violence they face are the result, and result, from / in the deletion of their voices, historically pathologized/ criminalized by 'official' knowledge (mostly built by medicine and psychological sciences, reproduced in various public and private spaces). Our hypothesis is that the media is, also, space of (re)production of violence and exclusion of transgender people - a hypothesis that at the end we found to be true. Thus, the work has three main objectives: 1) to analyze the discourses produced (jan.2014 - jan.2015) on Aqui PE and Jornal do Commercio (printed versions) about transsexuality(s); 2) through semi-structured interviews with some of those involved in news production (publishers of the analyzed books), provide clues about some of the conceptions of transsexuality circulating in newsroom and newspapers, as well as other variables that condition the construction of news topics; 3) tacking theories derived mainly from Journalism Theories, Critical Discourse Studies and Queer Studies, reflect on the possibilities of discursive change, therefore social changes, about transgenderity and, necessary- simultaneously, cisgenderity.

O Vilão Desviante: ideologia e heteronormatividade em filmes de animação longa-metragem dos Estúdios Disney / The Deviant Villain: ideology and heteronormativity in Disney animated feature films

Caynnã de Camargo Santos 24 August 2015 (has links)
Por fim, procuramos compreender as identidades de gênero desviantes dos vilões em questão sob a luz de alguns elementos da Teoria Queer / The relevance of childrens animated films in the process of teaching specific roles, values and ideals is widely recognized by culture scholars. The present work aims to unveil and critically analyze the subtle discursive strategy present in some of these media artifacts primarily addressed to children, which consists in reiterating the normality status of hegemonic forms of gender identification by attaching negativity content to devious identities in relation to socio-historic rules of \"masculinity\" and \"femininity\". Therefore, we make use of the Greimasian semiotics approach in order to analyze the presence of transgression elements of \"natural\" conceived gender roles in the representation of the villains Ursula, Jafar and Scar, from the Disney animation movies \"The Little Mermaid\" (1989), \"Alladin\" (1992) and \"The Lion King\" (1994), respectively. We emphasize the analysis of the elements present on the text discursive level, namely the characters costumes, their body language codes and physical conformations. Together with semiotics, we use some of the concepts from the research line generically known as \"Discursive Analysis\", aiming to discuss the dialogical relation established among the \"corpus\" of analysis and the political and social conflicting speeches, proper to the socio-historic contexts from which the movies emerged. Furthermore, we aim to propose discussions over the roles that this association between deviation of gender norms and the antagonists figure play on the support of heteronormativity and pre-concepts regarding certain social groups, problematizing the animation films as non-formal education teaching tools. We conclude that the representation patterns of the studied villains, on their gender performances, comply with the ideological function of implicitly and negatively evaluate ways of being and acting which frustrate traditional expectations of \"masculinity and femininity\", unequivocally associating them to evil, cruelty, selfishness and greed. Finally, we attempt to understand the devious gender identities from the studied villains under some Queer Theory elements.

From the life histories of three transsexual men, we sought to contribute to an anthropological listening about transsexuality, understanding it as a complex socio-historical phenomenon. Through the accounts presented, we tried to analyze different forms of social interaction that these subjects go through and the ways they face them. In order to do so, we have observed the individual experiences of self-construction and self-understanding, as well as that of the comprehension of social norms, on which such experiences are forged, starting from a notion of a subject formed in the relationships and which cannot exist outside the normative frameworks that establish the terms of their recognition and the conditions to intersubjective recognition. A subject whose reflexive and action ability is understood as possible in negotiation with the norms. It was prioritized a textual and theoretical elaboration that departed from the accounts given by the interviewees and, together with them, the main themes addressed in this research were elaborated: the recognition of self as a trans person; the disputes arising in the fields of family, love and work relations, among others; and how transsexuality fits in a larger picture of gender studies. Another important point, whose debate proved fruitful from the analyzed accounts, was the suggestion of “ceding” as a form of agency - in view of the conceptualization proposed by Saba Mahmood (2006) -, which would occur in a gradation variable according to with each social situation.

Estilo e marcadores sociais da diferença em contexto urbano: uma análise da desconstrução de diferenças entre jovens em São Paulo / Style and social markers of difference in the urban context: an analysis of the deconstruction of differences between young people in Sao Paulo

Alexandre Paulino Vega 06 March 2009 (has links)
This work presents an ethnography on young frequenters of Augusta street and the nearby locations in the city of São Paulo. It analyzes the negotiations these youngsters carry in relation to the presence of different styles in that area. The manner in which difference is transformed into inequality through the use of social markers of difference is analyzed based on a bibliography on sexuality, heteronormativity and style. The fieldwork is presented as well as the contingencies of doing participating observation in an environment of flirting. Then there are comments on the theoretical perspectives used to analyze the obtained data. It also presents a depiction of the people present in the field during the time of the research and lastly the final considerations on the data from the other chapters are presented.

An exploratory study of identity construction amongst married gay men in same-sex marriage: a discourse analysis

Laing, Bruce 20 May 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in South Africa and thereby casting gay men as acceptable sexual citizens. Gay men who choose not to marry are subject to further sexual discrimination. To explore the constructions and social meanings of gay men in same-sex marriage, four self-identified gay men who had been married for at least a year were interviewed. Guided by a social constructionist epistemology, discourse analysis of these interviews exposed the effects of language in the shaping of identities. The analysis found that the married gay man positions himself as a ‘decent’ sexual subject and assumes the heterosexist ideology of marriage, which discriminates the single gay man as amoral and ‘deviant’. The married gay men used the discourses of healing, othering, protection, rights and playing straight that entrenched heteronormativity as a moral and sexual authority thereby reinforcing homophobic prejudice. Policy and socio-political recommendations were made to address the legal concept of equality from a Queer Theoretical perspective and for the training of psychologists to include critical engagement with gay subjectivity and the gay cultural world.

Another Conscious Other

Callum, Harper January 2017 (has links)
Throughout the past 18 months I have adopted a construct for creating art in regards to what will be presented in this text. Research and statistics about LGBT legislation and societal attitudes inform perceptions of citizens and values within specific cities. Perceptions of these attitudes inform my experiences within these cities. The experiences within these cities inform the creation of text I write. The text I write informs the art, whether it be text, video or performance, that I create. This methodology has been applied before, during and after travelling to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Lappeenranta, Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Vilnius, during 2015 and 2016. As an Australian, as an other.

Åhman, Kat January 2017 (has links)

The Media Representation of Fictional Gay and Lesbian Characters on Television : A Qualitative Analysis of U.S. TV-series regarding Heteronormativity

Seif, Ray January 2017 (has links)
There has been an increase in the portrayal of gay characters in several television series during the last decades, however they are still depicted in an odd way, derived from the heteronormative approach. Television programs constantly show that heterosexuality is the prevailing standard and that people that do not adapt to this heteronormative morale are regarded as eccentric and do not fit in American society. This study aims to contribute to an understanding of how the media representation of fictional gay and lesbian characters in U.S. TV-series persists heteronormativity. The theory explores different influencing factors and characteristics of heteronormativity related concepts coming from gender and sex theories. Consequently, these characteristics and elements of the literature will be identified and set side by side. As a method a theoretical conceptual framework, in the context of a qualitative content analysis, is conducted in order to investigate the characteristics and elements of the gays and lesbians in the selected TV-series. Hereby analytical tools were used of this conceptual framework in order to understand the characteristics and elements of gendered stereotype, sexual aspects, villain/victim and life-style in scene dialog texts. The findings suggest that the four series have different ways of depicting the characteristics and elements of how the gay and lesbian characters are represented. Regarding the findings within characteristics: life-style aspects, gendered stereotypes and sexual depiction the heteronormativity is still persisting the American series. Some findings are supporting the arguments of the research review, however several findings are challenging the arguments of the previous research.

Att leva i marginalen : En litteraturöversikt om HBTQ-personers upplevelser av mötet med vårdpersonal / To live in the margin : A literature review of LGBTQ-persons’ experiences of the encounters with healthcare professionals

Lidholm, Karolina, Lindgren, Mollie January 2017 (has links)
Background: LGBTQ is a collective term for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer and is a current issue in today’s society. The perception of LGBTQ-persons has changed through history, where laws have been developed and organizations have been formed in order to promote living conditions and are working for equal rights. LGBTQ-persons are still subject to hate crimes and discrimination. The occurrence of health issues, such as somatic disease, mental illness and various forms of substance abuse are more common in this minority group than among the rest of the population. Communication is a determining factor for the experience of the encounter. Aim: To describe LGBTQ-persons’ experiences of the encounters with healthcare professionals. Method: A literature review was conducted, where ten science articles were examined and analyzed based on similarities and differences, to answer the aim. Results: The result is presented through two themes and three subthemes: The varying knowledge of health care professionals includes Being a reference and The health care professionals’ attitudes and approach, as well as the theme To disclose or not to disclose includes Internalized stigma. Discussion: The discussion highlights the importance of an open approach and awareness to promote equal care in which all people will feel safe and welcome. Two phenomena are discussed, Discrimination as a result of the disclosure of sexual identity and Heteronormativity as a result of social structures, in relation to Joyce Travelbee's theory of interpersonal relationships.
