Evaluation of Network Comparison ApproachesLakew Teshome, Hailelul January 2013 (has links)
Network visualizations have been used for quit long time. Different disciplines use this visualization to compare a given dataset. Identifying better comparison approach that is used for information visualization is indispensable both for the people who are using it and for developers who are looking for a better way of visualizing huge data. In this thesis a task based approach has been used to analyze two different network comparison approaches namely Juxtaposition (showing different objects compared in separate space or time) and Superposition (overlaying objects in the same space). Thirty students at Linnaeus University have participated in the questionnaire to evaluate the usability of the two approaches. SPSS tool is used to analyze the data collected from the participants and the result explicitly indicates that there is no significant variation between Juxtaposition and Superposition comparison approaches. The result can be used as a recommendation for domain specific professionals and developers in their quest for better network comparison for their audience.

Filmklippningens inverkan : För att konstruera overklighet / Film Cutting : To construct fantasyOlofsson, Emil January 2021 (has links)
I´m thinking of ending things by Charlie Kaufman premiered on Netflix in the fall of 2020. The featurefilm is a surrealistic thriller who´s narrative is played out like a fantasy containing several elements deviating from reality. The purpose of the essay was to investigate how unreality is portrayled trough the film editing and how camera work is used to create a fantasy perspective. Editing methods discussed by Bordwell and Thompson, Karen Pearlman and Walter Murch, among others, form the basis for an audiovisual analysis. The result shows that several of the selected sequences violate conventional editing to generate conflict of expectations. The use of temporal distortions works as a tool for illusion and to portray dream/fantasy.

If you don't push them, they will push you : A qualitative study on how six satirical journalists relate to the Moroccan majority mediaHedenmo, Fanny January 2017 (has links)
The present thesis is constructed upon the findings of a two month long field research, a Minor Field Study (MFS), in Casablanca, Morocco between February and April 2017. The aim is to understand how Moroccan satirical journalists can be understood in relation to the Moroccan media, and seeks out to answer the following research questions: 1) how can the relationship between Moroccan satirists and the majority media be theorized, and 2) how do the satirists relate to journalistic ideals in regard to the truth? The thesis was conducted by applying semi-structured interviews with six satirical journalists. The analysis is based on theories on public spheres, counterpublics, juxtaposition and journalistic ideals, and evolves as a discussion that intertwines the Moroccan and global media arena and the rise of a subjective narrative in global journalism. This thesis concludes that the Moroccan satirists are driven by ideals that are substantially in line with that which we connect to journalism. And while there are reasons to believe that the satirists of this thesis are countering the Moroccan media – a conclusion supported by factors such as hegemony, expression and content – I argue that it is more accurate to define the relationship between satirist and the dominant media as a juxtaposition. This is supported by the way the satirists view their work – accentuating the need to be truthful, responsible, and by acting as the public's surrogate when interrogating and questioning the power elite.

Problem dependent metaheuristic performance in Bayesian network structure learningWu, Yanghui January 2012 (has links)
Bayesian network (BN) structure learning from data has been an active research area in the machine learning field in recent decades. Much of the research has considered BN structure learning as an optimization problem. However, the finding of optimal BN from data is NP-hard. This fact has driven the use of heuristic algorithms for solving this kind of problem. Amajor recent focus in BN structure learning is on search and score algorithms. In these algorithms, a scoring function is introduced and a heuristic search algorithm is used to evaluate each network with respect to the training data. The optimal network is produced according to the best score evaluated. This thesis investigates a range of search and score algorithms to understand the relationship between technique performance and structure features of the problems. The main contributions of this thesis include (a) Two novel Ant Colony Optimization based search and score algorithms for BN structure learning; (b) Node juxtaposition distribution for studying the relationship between the best node ordering and the optimal BN structure; (c) Fitness landscape analysis for investigating the di erent performances of both chain score function and the CH score function; (d) A classifier method is constructed by utilizing receiver operating characteristic curve with the results on fitness landscape analysis; and finally (e) a selective o -line hyperheuristic algorithm is built for unseen BN structure learning with search and score algorithms. In this thesis, we also construct a new algorithm for producing BN benchmark structures and apply our novel approaches to a range of benchmark problems and real world problem.

The Aesthetics of Movement : Variations on Gilles Deleuze and Merce CunninghamDamkjaer, Camilla January 2005 (has links)
This thesis is an interdisciplinary study of the aesthetics of movement in Gilles Deleuze’s writings and in Merce Cunningham’s choreographies. But it is also a study of the movement that arises when the two meet in a series of variations, where also their respective working partners Félix Guattari and John Cage enter. It is a textual happening where the random juxtaposition between seemingly unrelated areas, philosophy and dance, gives rise to arbitrary connections. It is a textual machine, composed of seven parts. First, the methodological architecture of the juxtaposition is introduced and it is shown how this relates to the materials (the philosophy of Deleuze and the aesthetics of Cunningham), the relation between the materials, and the respective contexts of the materials. The presence of movement in Deleuze’s thinking is then presented and the figure of immobile movement is defined. This figure is a leitmotif of the analyses. It is argued that this figure of immobile movement is not only a stylistic element but has implications on a philosophical level, implications that materialise in Deleuze’s texts. Then follow four parts that build a heterogeneous whole. The analysis of movement is continued through four juxtapositions of particular texts and particular choreographies. Through these juxtapositions, different aspects of movement appear and are discussed: the relation between movement and sensation, movement in interaction with other arts, movement as a means of taking the body to its limit, movement as transformation. Through these analyses, the aesthetics of Cunningham is put into new contexts. The analyses also put into relief Deleuze’s use of figures of movement, and these suddenly acquire another kind of importance. In the seventh and concluding part, all this is brought into play.

ON THE STRUCTURE OF GAMES AND THEIR POSETSSiegel, Angela Annette 21 April 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the structure of games, including both the internal structure of various games and also the structure of classes of games as partially ordered sets. Internal structure is explored through consideration of juxtapositions of game positions and how the underlying games interact. We look at ordinal sums and introduce side-sums as a means of understanding this interaction, giving a full solution to a Toppling Dominoes variant through its application. Loopy games in which only one player is allowed a pass move, referred to as Oslo games, are introduced and their game structure explored. The poset of Oslo games is shown to form a distributive lattice. The Oslo forms of Wythoff’s game, Grundy’s game and octal .007 are introduced and full solutions given. Finally, the poset of option-closed games is given up to day 3 and all are shown to form a planar lattice. The option-closed game of Cricket Pitch is also fully analyzed.

Att lita till läsaren : Om impressionistiskt berättande i Stig Claessons författarskap med utgångspunkt i romanen Brev till en hembygdsgård / Trusting the reader : On impressionistic narrating in Stig Claesson's writings with the novel Brev till en hembygdsgård as starting pointMalmsborg, Thomas January 2014 (has links)
The objective of this paper – Trusting the reader: On impressionistic narrating in Stig Claesson's writings with the novel Brev till en hembygdsgård as starting point – is to examine narrative techniques used by the Swedish author Stig Claesson, specifically some which fall within the broad field known as literary impressionism: e.g. omission, repetition, juxtaposition, episodic narration and how access to the narrator’s as well as individual characters' consciousness is handled. The method used for the study will be that of illustrative comparison. The analysis will seek its theoretical grounds in the works by Gerard Genette and Jonathan Culler. In the major parts of the study, narrative techniques used by Claesson in the novel Brev till en hembygdsgård (1974), is examined with the help of Robert Paul Lamb and James Nagel, and their studies concerning the crafts of Ernest Hemingway and Stephen Crane. In addition, other novels by Claesson are used in order to find, illustrate and then compare his craftsmanship with techniques already studied and described by scholars and critics. The main result from the analysis is that a need to trust the reader follows from Claesson’s choice of narrative techniques; by having the narrating instance mainly represent perception – without allowing the narrator, or the characters of the narrative, to interpret what’s rendered – the reader is left to experience sensation on her own. To assist the reader, Claesson binds together his episodic narration with a frequent use of juxtaposition, in which colors, objects and scenes already used, are re-used – hence having one scene charge the next, and so on, with previously evoked emotions. Furthermore, Claesson frequently uses omission in conjunction with repetition as a narrative technique; often when the narrator returns to an already used scene, she is excluding some of the information given to the reader earlier in exchange for some previously omitted information or for elements belonging to other scenes. The study finds that a consequence of Claesson’s combination of the above mentioned techniques, is that his texts calls for a reader to take an active part in creating meaning both from the text and from their own experience. Finally, the study suggests that Claesson, like any craftsman, recognized that once the work is done and delivered, it is up to the recipient to use it according to their own ability, imagination and discretion.

A Systematic Evaluation of Fault Seal Integrity in the southern Pletmos Basin, offshore South Africa: A 3D Multidisciplinary Modelling ApproachMhlambi, Sanelisiwe January 2017 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Earth Science) / The syn-rift succession encompasses the primary exploration target in the southern
Pletmos Basin. Several fault-bounded structural traps that contain gas accumulations
have been discovered within this succession. Likewise, ubiquitous residual gas shows have
been encountered in most drilled wells. Yet, the impact of faults on fluid flow is poorly
understood. Therefore, this study aspires to predict, and where possible, quantify fault seal
integrity and sealing capacities of some of the major prospect-bounding faults.
A multi-disciplinary research strategy was employed in order to fulfil the study
objectives. Fault mapping and geo-cellular modelling using geostatistical algorithms were
undertaken to provide the basic geometric and structural input for more advanced fault seal
analysis applications. Juxtaposition analysis was carried out to identify zones with a high
probability to seal (or leak) and as the first-order tool for predicting fault seal potential.
Threshold pressures, hydrocarbon column heights, cross-fault permeability and transmissibility
were used to estimate the sealing capacities of the faults. In addition to juxtaposition and
customary fault-rock properties, the study also analysed parameters that can be deemed to be
representative of cross-fault fluid flow (i.e. effective cross-fault permeability and
transmissibility; ECFP and ECFT). Finally, modelling of the geo-history facilitated the
validation of the properties that underpinned fault seal analysis studies.
The Ga-Q and proposed Ga-K prospects along with their main bounding faults formed
the foci of the fault seal analysis results. The analysed faults showed excellent initial sealing
potential due to either favourable juxtaposition or shale gouge development. Nonetheless,
predicted hydrocarbon column heights and threshold pressures were low suggesting that the
seal integrity of the analysed faults is predisposed to failure. In addition, high predicted fault
permeability and transmissibility values signify the presence of open and permeable fracture
networks within the fault zones. Thus, it is proposed that the faults are very likely to have
leaked during hydrocarbon migration and filling of traps resulting in empty or under-filled
hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Unstable acts : a practitioner's case study of the poetics of postdramatic theatre and intermedialityFenton, David Raymond January 2007 (has links)
This practice-led research enquiry examines the form and experience of postdramatic theatre and intermediality. Through three practice-led enquiry cycles, the performance, Unstable Acts, was created. The study was designed to introduce the practitioner to a new process of practice within a postmodern aesthetic and to investigate the theory and practice of intermedial performance. Accordingly, Unstable Acts generated moments of praxis concerning postdramatic theatre and intermediality. By analysing this praxis an increasingly complex understanding of de-representational performance, the liminal experience, percipience, reflection and intermediality in postdramatic theatre was developed. In responding to Unstable Acts, the study proposes a working model for the poetics of postdramatic theatre which places intermediality as a formal recurrence of the postdramatic form. The model also proposes that the postdramaturgical strategy of de-representational performance is a central stylistic quality of postdramatic form, and that the liminal experience is central to the postdramatic theatre experience. Connecting de-representation and liminality through queer theory, the model contends that reflection is an important aspect of both the form and experience of postdramatic theatre. In so doing, the study provides a clearer understanding for theorists and practitioners of the poetics of postdramatic theatre and the position of intermediality in postdramatic practice.
