The Gemological Collection of Abraham Gottlob Werner

Gao, Shijia 12 October 2021 (has links)
The gemological collection of Abraham Gottlob Werner contains 1374 sample numbers for 25 different minerals with 38 gemological varieties, including 15 newly added numbers of samples, which were not recorded in the original catalog of 1823. In total, 168 samples were recorded as lost by the later researchers, 4 samples were taken for the chain for the rector of the university, samples of 2 different numbers in the catalog were exchanged for cut stones, and 3 times’ volume requisitions happened. A total of 256 sample numbers show discrepancies and therefore are not in accordance with the original record in the catalog. In the collection, 6.8% of the numbers are rock sample with embedded crystals, 20.7% of the numbers are in the form of crystal, 30.6% of the numbers are fragments, 11.6% of the numbers are grains, and the remaining 711 samples are cut. Except for Esa. No. 644a containing four cushion cut samples, all faceted cuts were recorded in the original catalog of 1823. However, the brilliant, oval, step, emerald, scissor, and radiant cut forms were invented after the gemological collection of Werner, which means 189 samples do probably not belong to the original collection. They could be from another collection due to the requisitions, or the later researchers of the collection added or exchanged the samples with new ones. The mineral names of the catalog from 1823 refer to Werner's mineral system, some of the mineral's names are not used anymore. With the development of mineralogy and gemology, the special names of the gemstones as varieties of minerals are gradually standardized. 51 samples are wrong identifications and 8 pieces of glass have been recognized. The zircon samples of the collection provide a research resource for the study of metamictization. Both color and density of zircon could be an indicator of the metamictization degree. The metamictization has a significant influence on the gemological properties of zircon. The green tone and low density cannot be considered as an identifying characteristic of metamict zircon, although they are still a sign of metamictization. Comparing six mineralogical or geological collections at Werner’s time, the catalogs of five collections used his nomenclature of samples and only the catalog of the mineralogical collection of Adolf Traugott von Gersdorf is geographical. To his time the outstanding gemological collection of Abraham Gottlob Werner represented the broadest quantity of gemological varieties. A modern gemological database of the collection has been founded, the meta-data provides an important base for further research and development.:Acknowledgements I Abstract III Table of Contexts IV List of figures VI List of tables VII 1. Vom gedruckten zum digitalen Bestandskatalog: Ein Werkstattbericht

Rüdiger, Ralf 06 November 2019 (has links)

Cenzor a literát Jan Nepomuk Václav Zimmermann (1788-1836) / Censor and writer Jan Nepomuk Václav Zimmermann (1788-1836)

Novotná, Monika January 2018 (has links)
This work exposes, evaluates and summarises academic and professional career of Jan Nepomuk Vaclav Zimmermann (1788-1836), who worked as a scriptor and a censor. It reviews his censoring and book-examining skills across all fields of book culture. It investigates and evaluates whether contemporary critical testimonies depict Zimmermann's rather negative character rightfully and accurately or not. Zimmermann devoted his time to examining and censoring Czech books and also Hebrew books. As a scriptor at University library, he was responsible for collecting, archiving and organizing manuscripts into catalogues. These catalogues have been filed in National Library for many years. Palaeographical analysis of the catalogues will bring in new facts concerning Zimmermann's autorship. This thesis also presents a list of Zimmermann's work with its historical critical evaluation and compares it to the recent research. Keywords: Jan Zimmermann, Manuscript Catalogues, University Library, Censorship, Censoring Hebrew Literature, Censoring Czech literature, of the Cross with the Red Star, Reformation of Catholic Church under the reign of Joseph II

Návrh metodiky stanovení součinitele drsnosti otevřených koryt / Design of methodology for determining roughness coefficient of open channels

Smelík, Lukáš January 2015 (has links)
Determination of immeasurable parameter, the Manning’s roughness coefficient, is a complex problem of open channel hydraulics for more than 200 years. Now it doesn’t exists a method for determining an exact value of 1D roughness coefficient for computation water levels in watercourses. Doctoral thesis is focused for comparing different approaches to determine a roughness coefficient, especially for empirical equations. It were sought empirical equations, which are suitable for wide spectrum of water stages, types of bed material, channel shapes and channel dimensions. Selected equations were sorted on the base of two methods by the best values of medians and standard deviations of measured and computed values of roughness coefficients. Furthermore, it were compared qualities of roughness coefficient determination by tables, by photographic catalogs, CES software and by Cowan’s method, which has been extended and recalibrated. The computed values of roughness coefficients by those four methods were compared with values from own measurements in 27 locations in watercourses near of Brno and Frýdek-Místek. Also it were compared the grain size curves determined by sieving, by Wolman’s method and by Subjective estimation. Doctoral thesis is marginally focused for beginning of sediment movement, roughness coefficient of bedforms (dunes), grass and trees.

Kronberg, Tove January 2023 (has links)
This essay examines how the studentnation Smålands nation in Uppsals uses and conveys it’s collection of inspector portraits. The collection consists of twentyfour portraits with matching motives,. The portraits are examined based on both their physical and immaterial values, which has been important to understand the portraits as a collection. The physical condition of the collection was determined through a condition assessment, which showed that a majority of the portraits have serious damages in the form of tears, cracks and bulges.  The motifs and historical backgrounds have been cataloged due to a stocktaking., wich showed that only sixteen portraits actually depicted inspectors. The other eight portraits depicted instead well-known Småland-residents and meritorius role models. The essay also examined the collection as a tool for communication between the nation and it’s visitors, showing that the inspector portraits communicated messages of power and identity through  well-selected symbols, attributes and compositions.

Die königliche Modellkammer der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

Zauzig, Oliver 28 July 2022 (has links)
This research paper is about the königliche Modellkammer (Royal Model Chamber) of the University of Göttingen. This historical teaching collection has left numerous traces to this day. Despite the professionalisation of the collection's work and the constant integration of the models into the university curriculum of the Faculty of Philosophy, especially applied mathematics, appropriate conditions of use existed almost at no time. In the 1880s, the collection was dissolved, and the process of dissolution is documented in detail in the files. In addition, 24 models from the former collection have been preserved until now. The structure and scope of the Göttingen Model Chamber correspond to the universal model collections of the time, whose origins can be found in courtly, municipal and bourgeois art chambers. Models and model collections for example were used for purposes of demonstrating power, for planning and designing, as patterns, for playing and experimenting, but above all in teaching and education. In addition to researching the everyday practice of historical collection work, the focus is on investigating curricular use with the royal model chamber. To this end, some of the historical models of the collection that still exist today were examined in detail, analysed, questioned in relation to their historical curricular practice and individually contextualised. Especially through the encounter with the objects, a variety of questions emerged. Ultimately, the numerous gaps in information that inevitably open up when researching the everyday use of the historical teaching collection through written material and objects force a predominantly heuristic approach.
