Ostracism and social vulnerability : impact on cognitive control, emotions and fundamental needs / Ostracisme et vulnérabilité sociale : impact sur le contrôle cognitif, les émotions et les besoins fondamentaux

L'exclusion sociale est considérée comme l'une des situations les plus douloureuses pour les êtres humains. Les travaux dans ce domaine montrent que même de brefs épisodes d’ostracisme (paradigme du Cyberball) ont des effets importants aux niveaux neurophysiologique, émotionnel et comportemental, l’impact de cet ostracisme au niveau cognitif néanmoins n'a pas reçu beaucoup d'attention. Des résultats récents mettent en évidence une influence négative de l'ostracisme sur les marqueurs électrophysiologiques du contrôle cognitif, il n'y a cependant à ce jour aucune preuve directe d’une réduction de contrôle cognitif sous l’effet d’une exclusion sociale. Dans nos travaux nous avons étudié l'impact de l'ostracisme (Cyberball) sur le contrôle cognitif avec la tâche standard de Simon couplée à des analyses distributionnelles des temps de réaction auprès de populations caractérisées ou non par des expériences chroniques d’ostracisme (i.e., des étudiants ordinaires dans l’Étude 1, des personnes illettrées dans l'Étude 2 et des chômeurs de longue durée dans l'Étude 3). Dans les trois études, de brefs épisodes d'exclusion sociale suffisent à dégrader le niveau de satisfaction exprimé par les participants à l’égard des besoins fondamentaux (appartenance sociale, existence significative, estime de soi, contrôle des événements). Ces effets, cependant, s’avèrent réduits dans les populations chroniquement frappées d'ostracisme, suggérant leur moindre sensibilité à l'exclusion sociale en jeu dans le Cyberball. Plus important encore, cet ostracisme provoque chez les participants non stigmatisés une diminution du contrôle cognitif (Étude 1), mise en évidence dans nos travaux par un effet Simon stable (plutôt que réduit) sur les temps de réaction les plus longs pourtant les plus sensibles à l’expression d’un processus d'inhibition. Cependant, nos résultats ne montrent aucune différence de sensibilité entre les participants chroniquement ostracisés et leurs groupes contrôle (les Études 2 et 3), suggérant une certaine faiblesse du paradigme Cyberball auprès des personnes en situation d'exclusion sociale dans leur vie quotidienne. Nos résultats remettent donc en question la prédominance de ce paradigme pour la compréhension des effets cognitifs de l’exclusion sociale, au moins chez les individus caractérisés par un ostracisme chronique. / Impact on cognitive control, emotions and fundamental needsRésumé : Social exclusion is considered as one of the most painful situations for human beings. Past research showed that even brief episodes of ostracism (the Cyberball paradigm) have strong effects at the neurophysiological, emotional, and behavioral levels, its impact at the cognitive level however did not receive much attention. Recent findings revealed a negative influence of ostracism on electrophysiological markers of cognitive control, yet there is no direct evidence that being socially excluded reduces cognitive control. Here, we investigated the impact of ostracism (using the Cyberball) on cognitive control using a standard Simon task and distributional reaction time analyses with non-chronically-ostracized and chronically-ostracized populations (regular students in Study 1, illiterate people in Study 2, and long-term unemployed people in Study 3). In the three studies, brief episodes of social exclusion had negative effects on participants’ self-reports of fundamental needs' satisfaction (belonging, meaningful existence, self-esteem, and control). These effects, however, were substantially reduced in chronically-ostracized populations, suggesting that ostracism based on the Cyberball is a bit less meaningful for those populations. More importantly, this ostracism caused a transitory reduction in cognitive control in the non-chronically-ostracized participants (Study 1), as indicated by a stable (rather than decreased) Simon effect on longer reaction times where inhibition yet is more likely. However, we found no evidence of a differential sensitivity between the chronically-ostracized participants and their control groups (Study 2 and Study 3), suggesting that the Cyberball paradigm is not powerful enough with people experiencing social exclusion in their ordinary life. Our findings therefore call into question the predominance of the Cyberball paradigm for our understanding of the cognitive effects of ostracism, at least in chronically ostracized-individuals.

Syftet med denna examensuppsats var att kvalitativt undersöka upplevelsen av minoritetsstress samt dess påverkan och hantering hos homosexuella i Sverige. Detta gjordes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med tio personer i åldern 22 till 44 år, vars berättelser analyserades med hjälp av en tematisk analys. Resultatet visar på en utbredd upplevelse av minoritetsstress inom flera områden i samhället och livet. Minoritetsstressen berodde på alltifrån hat och avståndstagande, diskriminering, utanförskap, heteronormativt bemötande, exotifiering och internaliserad homofobi till problem vid kontakt med myndigheter, vård och juridik. Minoritetsstressen upplevdes ge en sämre psykisk hälsa, ge upphov till komplexa negativa känslor, begränsa livsutrymmet, dränera energi samt ge upphov till en förhöjd rädsla och vaksamhet för potentiellt ofarliga situationer. Strategier för hantering av minoritetsstressen omfattade allt från socialt stöd, arbete med sin självbild och gränssättning till engagemang för hbtq+- frågor. Informanternas vittnesmål gick i linje med internationell forskning på samma område och kunde vidare förstås när de ställdes bredvid tidigare fynd och teorier kring minoritetsstress och hanteringsstrategier. Vittnesmålen visade även på minoritetsstressens komplexa verkan och genes. Resultatet indikerar ett stort behov av kunskap om homosexuellas utsatthet och livsvillkor inom samhällets alla arenor. Economic abuse does not always appear in the context of domestic abuse,there are other forms of abuse that are more mentioned in politics and inmedia, for example physical and psychological abuse. Previous researchshows that economic violence is often linked to psychological and physicalviolence and that it is mainly women who are overrepresented in terms ofvulnerability to violence. The consequences of economic violence have provento be many and big, in some terms even life-long for the women who havebeen exposed to the violence.The purpose of the study is to gain an increased understanding of socialworkers' experiences in working with women who have been exposed toeconomic violence by men they have a relationship with, as well as the socialand economic consequences the exposed women are left with. The theoriesused in the study are Yvonne Hirdman's theory of gender, as well as Goffman'stheory of stigmatization and social exclusion.Eight interviews of social workers have been conducted to get a picture ofwhat consequences women who are exposed to economic violence have andwhat obstacles and opportunities the social workers see in their work withwomen exposed to violence. The results show that men's economic violenceagainst women has major consequences for women's lives. The results alsoshow that social workers see both obstacles and opportunities in their work tohelp women exposed to economic violence.

Att ha ett lönearbete är centralt för individens tillvaro och identitet. En av grupperna i samhället som har det svårast att etablera sig på arbetsmarknaden är individer med funktionsnedsättning. Syftet med denna littraturöversikt är att öka förståelsen och kunskapen kring hinder och möjligheter på arbetsmarknaden för unga vuxna med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning. Artiklarna som belyser utanförskap, stigmatisering, hinder, lagstiftning, stödinsater och möjligheter kommer att undersökas för att beskriva deras samband till unga vuxna med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning. Vägen till arbete för individer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning påverkas av olika faktorer. I Sverige har unga vuxna med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning en låg etableringsgrad på arbetsmarknaden. Trots stödinsatser kan personer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning känna sig exkluderade från arbetsmarknaden vilket beror på arbetsgivarna synsätt, stigmatisering på arbetsmarknaden och låga förväntningar. Resultaten i denna stuide har analyserats utifrån teorier om KASAM (känsla av sammanhang) och stigma. Resultatet visar på att individer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning kan trots stödinsatser uppleva exkludering av kollegor och arbetsgivare på arbetsmarknaden. Sammanfattningsvis diskuterades hinder och möjligheter som unga med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning upplever på arbetsmarknaden. / Having a paid job is central to the individual´s existence and identity. One of the groups in society that has the hardest time establishing themselves in the labor market are individuals with disabilities. The purpose of this litrature review is to increase understanding and knowledge about obstacles and opportunities in the labor market for young adults with intellectual disabilities. The path to work for individuals with intellectual disabilities is influenced by various factors. In Sweden, young adult with intellectual disabilities have a low rate of establishment in the labor market. Despite support efforts, people with intellectual disabilites can feel excluded from the labor market, witch is due to employers´attitudes, stigmatization in the workplace and low expectations. The results of this study have been analyzed based on theories of KASAM (sense og context) and stigma from Goffman. The results show that individuals with intellectual disabilites can experiece exclusion from colleagues and employers in the labor market, despite support. In summary, obstacles and opportunities that young adults with intellectual disabilities experience in the labor market were discussed.

Anticipated and enacted stigma among female outpatients living with HIV : the case of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, South Africa

Three years into the human territory, the fight against HIV/AIDS still prevails. According to Fuller (2008), it is estimated that by 2025, 80 million Africans will have been killed by this pandemic, while 90 million are estimated to be infected by HIV. Close to 3 thousand women are infected with HIV daily. In the beginning of 2008, some 22,5 million sub-Saharan Africans were living with HIV (Fuller 2008). In South Africa, 5 million people are estimated to be infected with HIV, 250 thousand die each year due to AIDS-related deaths, while a thousand people die daily and 17 hundred get infected daily. South African women are the hardest hit population group, compared to their male counterparts (Fuller 2008; Zuberi 2004). In South Africa this epidemic crawled under the shadow of denial, fear, ignorance, stigma and discrimination, which disrupted efforts to prevent further spread and care for the infected and the affected individuals and groups. South African women are subjected to gender inequality, sexual violence and rape, and in the presence of HIV/AIDS their plight became exacerbated. They became subjected to blame and rejection because people do not want to associate themselves with this group, who possess the deadly infectious disease which is associated with commercial sex workers, intravenous drug users and homosexuals. The aim of this research was to investigate the plight of anticipated and enacted stigma among the South African women who receive treatment as outpatients in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The study was conducted among six women who are living with HIV/AIDS over a period of four weeks, with a qualitative research design adopted as research method. In-depth interviews were used as the primary tool for data collection. This study was conducted in order for the researcher to obtain insight into the subject of HIV- and AIDS-related stigma and to highlight the experiences of participants for policy and programme designing and development purposes.

The lived experiences of HIV/AIDS related stigma reduction programmes on young females in rural Hlabisa District

The phenomenon of stigmatisation in the transmission of HIV/AIDS was highlighted in this study, and considered from a social constructionist perspective. The lived experiences of 20 participants were explored in the context of a stigma reduction programme. Perceived meanings attached to stigma, and its influence on participant behaviour was revealed through narratives. The influence of the programme on participant meaning making and perceptions was also revealed, and found that the meaning of stigma remained unchanged, and therefore stigma was not reduced. Not discounting the therapeutic platform of the programme in enabling co-construction of new perspectives which enabled coping mechanisms for participants in dealing with their circumstances. It is recommended that studies such as this be used to assist future stigma reduction programmes to identify their roles in meaning making regarding stigma, with the premise in mind that if meaning shifts, experiences will shift. / Psychology / M.A (Psychology)
