My goal with this thesis was to investigate how educational material in the subjects of history, geography and social studies relate to the fact that Sweden has a history marked by prejudice and racism.I have chosen to focus on four areas in the Swedish history that I think deserves some special attention, these four areas have been: the Swedish slave trade on the island of Saint Barthelemy in the eighteenth century, Swedish eugenics and oppression of the Sami people, forced sterilization services during the twentieth century and Sweden's aid and concessions to Nazi Germany during World War II. With these areas in focus I’ve studied three textbooks in the courses Geography A, Civics A and History A to se how they deal with prejudice and racism in the Swedish history. The result I have come to is that none of the books addresses all four of the areas I’ve focused on. Even if the books are taken as a whole the image that they convey is not adequate. In the event that the four areas that I’ve focused on been mentioned the information have been scant and rarely, if ever, has Sweden been paired with phenomenons like racism, slavery, colonialism, eugenics, forced sterilization, etc. All these concepts (apart from racism) are treated in comparison to other countries and in some cases, even moral advice, or condemnations occurred in connection therewith. Racism as a phenomenon is not discussed in any of the books, creating a further gap in the history these books create. The consequence of this would be that the teaching teachers need to compensate for the shortcomings of these books to meet the guidelines and objectives governing documents set up. If such compensatory education does not take place there is a risk that the areas I have chosen to focus on will fall into oblivion and the lessons we can learn from history could be lost.

從組織發展探討國立臺灣圖書館百年歷史 / Study on History of the National Taiwan Library in the Past One Hundred Years From perspective of Organization Development

國立臺灣圖書館,其前身為日據時期的臺灣總督府圖書館,營運迄今已屆滿百年。走過政權轉變,經歷多次的組織變革,直到今日仍然為臺灣眾多讀者提供服務,影響其發展的因素值得探討。本研究將以組織發展做為研究主軸,探討國立臺灣圖書館的百年歷史發展,希冀可以從中獲得其成功發展的原因。根據此研究動機,研究目的為:(1)探討從臺灣總督府圖書館到國立臺灣圖書館組織結構的百年歷史發展與重要事件;(2)歸納國立臺灣圖書館的價值以及影響其發展的重要因素;(3)探討從臺灣總督府圖書館到國立臺灣圖書館的歷史發展與重要事件;(4)探討組織發展對國立臺灣圖書館百年歷史之影響;(5)探討國立臺灣圖書館百年歷史發展中的館藏建設。 本研究透過歷史研究法,以組織發展為研究主軸,並以國立臺灣圖書館歷史發展中的五大組織變革,作為歷史發展階段的分段依據,透過史料蒐集分析,探討國立臺灣圖書館的百年歷史發展。另外使用訪談法,透過與館員、學者的訪談,瞭解國立臺灣圖書館的組織與館藏現況,以及國立臺灣圖書館百年歷史發展過程中的重大歷史事件。經過歷史研究法的史料分析與訪談結果分析,獲得以下幾點結論:(1)國立臺灣圖書館是代表臺灣研究的圖書館,各個階段的組織因從隸屬不同,而有不同的發展;(2)組織功能隨著歷史發展而有所差異,組織功能也受到組織規程或相關條例的規範;(3)國立臺灣圖書館發展過程中的重大歷史事件也影響了國立臺灣圖書館的歷史發展;(4)國立臺灣圖書館的組織與歷史發展,亦受到館長成就事蹟的影響而有所改變;(5)國立臺灣圖書館組織的變革與發展,同時也影響了國立臺灣圖書館的歷史發展;(6)不同時期的組織發展,會因為所屬機關的變化而改變;(7)組織定位與組織發展息息相關,國立臺灣圖書館的研究型圖書館功能受到質疑;(8)圖書館上級機關的政策,影響了國立臺灣圖書館之館藏發展政策的制定與發展;(9)館舍的有無,影響圖書館的歷史與館藏發展;(10)1945年之後的館藏目錄出版不如日據時期編製的完善;(11)臺灣學研究中心與資訊中心為任務編組,業務推展上有其困難之處。 針對以上所獲得之結論,本研究提出下列幾點建議:(1)在組織結構上,應建立臺灣圖書館學的相關研究單位;(2)在人員編制上,應編制臺灣圖書館學的相關研究人員;(3)館藏特色的建立上,應區別出與其他典藏單位的差異;(4)數位典藏系統中的資料並不完整,應盡量將資料建置完善;(5)相關史料典藏單位不同,使得資料取得不易,可建立統一的查詢平台或是合作典藏目錄;(6)針對館藏特色,出版館藏目錄等。 / National Taiwan Library, as Taiwan Governor’s Library in Japanese ruled period, has been operated for a century. Going through the changes of political power and experiencing several organizational changes, it still provides services for numerous readers in Taiwan. The factors in the development are worth discussion. Aiming at organizational development, the historical development of National Taiwan Library in the past century is explored in this study, expecting to acquire the key success factors in the development. According to the research motivation, this study aims to (1)discuss the historical development and important events of the organizational structure from Imperial Taiwan Library to National Taiwan Library in the past century, (2)induce the value of National Taiwan Library and the factors in the development, (3)explore the historical development and important events from Imperial Taiwan Library to National Taiwan Library, (4)investigate the effects of organizational development on the history of National Taiwan Library in the past century, and (5)discuss the collection building in the historical development of National Taiwan Library in the past century. Aiming at organizational development, five major organizational changes in the historical development of National Taiwan Library are regarded as the stages; and, with Historical Research, the historical development of National Taiwan Library in the past century are explored through historical data collection and analyses. Furthermore, with Interview Survey, librarians and scholars are interviewed to understand the organization of National Taiwan Library and the current situation of collection as well as the major historical events in the historical development process of National Taiwan Library in the past century. Based on historical data analyses with Historical Research and interview analyses, the following conclusions are summarized. (1) National Taiwan Library is a library representing Taiwan studies. The levels of organizations reveal distinct development because of different subjection. (2) Organizational functions change with historical development and are regulated by the regulations of organization or relative rules. (3) Major historical events in the development process of National Taiwan Library also affect the historical development of National Taiwan Library. (4) The organization and historical development of National Taiwan Library also change with chief librarians’ achievement deeds. (5) The organizational change and development of National Taiwan Library also influence the historical development of National Taiwan Library. (6) The organizational development at different phases would change with changing subsidiary organizations. (7) Organizational positioning closely associates with organizational development that the research library function of National Taiwan Library is questioned. (8) The policies of the library supervising agency affect the formulation and development of collection development policies of National Taiwan Library. (9) The plan of premises influences the library history and collection development. (10) The publication of collection catalogues after 1945 is not as complete as those edited in Japanese ruled period. (11) Taiwan Study Research Center and Information Center are task force that the business promotion is rather difficult. Aiming at above conclusions, the following suggestions are proposed in this study. (1) In terms of organizational structure, research units for Taiwan library science should be established. (2) In regard to staffing, researchers on Taiwan library science should be appointed. (3) Regarding the establishment of collection characteristics, the difference from other archive units should be discriminated. (4) Incomplete data in digital archives should be established the data as complete as possible. (5) Relevant historical data cannot be easily accessed because of different archive units. A uniform enquiry platform or cooperative collection catalogues could be established. (6) Collection catalogues could be published according to the collection characteristics.

Abstract The aim of the study is to indicate the role of fiction in the institutionalisation and subsequent developments of the Finnish public library in view of the traditions of literary sociology and organisation studies. To indicate and open this connection, the study depicts the relationship of professional librarianship in the public library to the literary system, and scrutinises the options this cultural and historical connection could provide to both the public library and other agents of the literary system today and in the future. The public library acquires, stores, intermediates, and advances fiction, using methods developed as a kind of innovation, and spread from one country to another as a result of the institutional isomorphic change. The public library emerged in the 19th century to fulfil informational-educational aims, but it developed quickly into the library or the readers. In view of this study, the questions of book selection of fiction in particular became a challenge for the public libraries that had to make compromises demanded by their environments. Later, in the 1960s, the challenges related to fiction in public libraries became more typically social. The library’s functions and tasks started to widen, and fiction became only one type of material among others—though still one favoured by the users of the library. Within the public library too, as well as within the literary field, one still discussed the criteria of fiction selection in the 1980s. The role of the public library as a cultural agency further weakened in the 1990s, when new tasks based on the objectives of the information society were posed to the library. In light of this and in view of the modern hybrid library, fiction and all printed material started to seem old-fashioned. In the 2000s, one indeed started to build the public library as a modern service agency where the significance of the space was emphasised at the expense of the collection. The study indicates that by emphasising the particular role of the public library as an agent of the literary system, one perhaps could enrich the whole literary system and its concept as well as affect the legitimacy and sufficiency of the resources of small libraries especially. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on osoittaa kirjallisuussosiologisen ja organisaatiotutkimuksen tutkimusperinteitä hyödyntäen, minkälainen rooli kaunokirjallisuudella on erityisesti suomalaisen yleisen kirjaston institutionalisoitumisessa sekä myöhemmässä kehityksessä. Yhteyden osoittamiseksi ja avaamiseksi kuvaillaan yleisen kirjaston ja kirjastoammatillisuuden suhdetta kaunokirjalliseen järjestelmään, sekä tarkastellaan mahdollisuuksia, joita tämä kulttuurinen ja historiallinen sidos voi tarjota tänä päivänä ja tulevaisuudessa sekä yleiselle kirjastolle että kirjallisen järjestelmän muille toimijoille. Yleinen kirjasto hankkii, säilyttää, välittää ja edistää kaunokirjallisuutta käyttäen eräänlaisina innovaatioina kehittyneitä erityisiä menetelmiä, jotka ovat levinneet maasta toiseen yleisen kirjaston ja kirjastoammatillisuuden institutionaalisen samankaltaistumisen seurauksena. Yleinen kirjasto syntyi 1800-luvulla toteuttamaan tiedollis-sivistyksellisiä päämääriä, mutta nopeasti siitä kehittyi lukijoiden kirjasto. Tämän tutkimuksen näkökulmasta erityisesti kertomakirjallisuuden kirjavalinnan kysymyksistä tulikin yleiselle kirjastolle haaste, jossa jouduttiin tekemään toimintaympäristöstä johtuvia kompromisseja. Myöhemmin 1960-luvulla yleisen kirjaston kaunokirjallisuuteen liittyvät haasteet muuttuivat enemmän yhteiskunnallisiksi. Sen toimintoja ja tehtäväkenttää alettiin laajentaa, ja kaunokirjallisuudesta tuli kirjastossa vain yksi – tosin kirjastonkäyttäjien edelleen suosima – aineisto. Tosin sekä yleisen kirjaston sisällä että kirjallisella kentällä keskusteltiin vielä 1980-luvullakin kaunokirjallisen kokoelman valintakriteereistä. Yleisen kirjaston asema kulttuurilaitoksena heikkeni edelleen, kun 1990-luvulla kirjastolle asetettiin tietoyhteiskunnan tavoitteiden mukaisia uusia tehtäviä. Kaunokirjallisuus ja koko painettu kirjallisuus aineistona alkoivat tässä valossa ja modernin hybridikirjaston näkökulmasta näyttäytyä vanhanaikaisina. Yleisestä kirjastosta alettiinkin 2000-luvulla rakentaa modernia palvelulaitosta, jossa tilan merkitys korostui kokoelman kustannuksella. Tutkimuksessa osoitetaan, että korostamalla yleisen kirjaston erityislaatuista roolia kirjallisen järjestelmän toimijana voitaisiin rikastuttaa koko kirjallista järjestelmää ja sen käsitettä sekä mahdollisesti lisätä erityisesti pienten kirjastojen legitimiteettiä ja resurssien riittävyyttä.

LULEÅS FOLKBIBLIOTEKSUTVECKLING UR ETT GENUSPERSPEKTIV : - med fokus på centralbibliotekarien Olga Bardh

Uppsatsen syftar till att synliggöra folkbiblioteksutvecklingen i Luleå, samt att lyfta fram fler kvinnor som bidragit till folkbiblioteksutvecklingen i Sverige. Studien undersöker vilka faktorer som påverkat progressionen av Luleå kommuns folkbibliotek, samtidigt som dessa sätts i relation till Sveriges biblioteksutveckling. Trots att Valfrid Palmgren beundrade och framhävde Luleås folkbibliotek i sin skrift år 1911, är Norrbottens bibliotekshistoria tämligen dold för omvärlden. Luleås bibliotek var bland de första biblioteken i Sverige som utsågs till centralbibliotek, där bibliotekarien Olga Bardh anställdes som chef. Olga Bardh var en välutbildad kvinna med stora visioner om att skapa ett modernt och framstående bibliotek i Luleå och Norrbotten. Denna studie ämnar undersöka vilken betydelse hennes arbete hade för biblioteksutvecklingen, och på vilket sätt detta i så fall yttrade sig. Uppsatsens teoretiska utgångspunkter utgår från Christina Florins (1987) teorier om den svenska folkskolans feminiserings- och professionaliseringsprocess i början på 1900-talet, Yvonne Hirdmans (2004) teorier om genussystemet, samt Hanna Westberg-Wohlgemuths (1996) teorier om könsmärkning. Med hjälp av kritisk diskursanalys har det empiriska materialet analyserats i hopp om att verka för social förändring, där undertryckta samhällsgrupper synliggörs.

Ein Unternehmer stiftet Bildung: Jacob Georg Bodemer und die Bibliotheken in Sachsen

Der Zschopauer Unternehmer Jacob Georg Bodemer, ein großer Förderer der Volksbildung, erkannte, dass Bibliotheken Investitionen in die Zukunft seien. Er initiierte die Gründung der Chemnitzer Stadtbibliothek, welche dank seiner Hilfe 1869 eröffnen konnte. Darauf gründete er die Georg-Bodemer-Stiftung. Auch die Zschopauer und Wolkensteiner Stadtbibliotheken erhielten seine Zuwendungen. Bodemer unterstützte auch Vereine, Schulen und Lehrerseminare. Bodemer, der zahlreiche Ehrenbürgerwürden sächsischer Städte erhielt, zählt zu den Pionieren des Volksbüchereiwesens.

Syftet med studien är att med intresse för könssegregering undersöka diskurser om bibliotek, bibliotekarier ochkvinnors roll inom arbetslivet. Empirin för studien är dokument publicerade inom tidsperioden 1850-talet till 1910-talet och som berör uppsatsens teman. Dessa analyseras utifrån en diskurspsykologisk samt en kompletterandeidéanalytisk ansats för att synliggöra tolkningsrepertoarer och maktrelationer. Studiens resultat visar på två förhållningssätt till och tolkningsrepertoarer baserat på traditionella normer inom de empiriska dokumenten. Dels den upprätthållande tolkningsrepertoaren, dels den utmanande tolkningsrepertoaren. Vidare synliggjordes genussystemets och det ostabila genuskontraktets inverkan på bibliotekarieyrkets status. / The aim of the study is to, with an interest in gender segregation, examine discourses about libraries, librarians and the role of women in working life. The empirical material for the study is documents published within the time period from the 1850s to the 1910s that touch on the themes of the essay. These are analyzed based on a discourse-psychological and a complementary idea-analytical approach to make interpretation repertoires and power relations visible. The results of the study show two approaches to, and interpretation repertoires based on traditional norms within the empirical documents. Partly the maintaining interpretation repertoire, partly the challenging interpretation repertoire. Furthermore, the impact of the gender system and the unstable gender contract on the status of librarianship was made visible

Democratising Libraries : Virginia Carini Dainotti and Public Librarianship in Italy

This master’s thesis is a case study investigating the career and ideology of Virginia Carini Dainotti, a librarian working in twentieth-century Italy who played a significant role in Italian librarianship. This study has been carried out through textual analysis and is primarily based on the material written by Carini Dainotti herself, including both articles and monographs. These documents were extensively used to understand her contribution to the establishment of the American public library model in Italy. This master’s thesis finds that Virginia Carini Dainotti has played a significant role in the Italian library field. Her particular attention to the needs of young adults and adults, her openness to international experiences and her view of the public library as a socio-educational tool marked her out as an innovator compared to the 20th-century Italian state of the field.

This was the first comprehensive doctoral dissertation on the George Bush Presidential Library Center at Texas A&M University. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum was the focal point. The purpose was to describe the global significance, work and educational contributions of the Bush Presidential Library while exploring its partnership with Texas A&M University. The primary data sources were: archival records, museum exhibits, interviews and my field work experiences. Beyond being a descriptive dissertation, this study offered unique hypotheses and conclusions. It examined the higher educational aspects of the Bush Presidential Library Center's operating context within Texas A&M University. These included the educational value of George Bush's career, the Bush Presidential Library's contents, and its benefits and technology use in educational programming. This study answered two unique hypotheses: how President Bush's liberation of Kuwait increased the Middle Eastern funding of presidential libraries and the Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University. George Bush's global presidency, distinguished international public service career and his world-changing, historical presidential achievements gave the Bush Presidential Library and Museum an extraordinary educational value. The data showed the educational value of, benefits of and technology's role in educational programming at the Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The global changes mirrored President Bush's career and his effort to combat terrorism. China's emergence as a world power was attributed to President Bush's career. The Bush Presidential Library and Museum is the core asset of the center. The data showed President Bush's liberation of Kuwait directly influenced the funding of his presidential library and the subsequent ones. The data showed the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets' influence on President Bush's selection of Texas A&M University as the site for his presidential library. Texas A&M University is the best place for the George Bush Presidential Library Center. A university environment is the best place to host a presidential library.

Lignes, an intellectual revue : twenty-five years of politics, philosophy, art and literature

The thesis takes the French revue Lignes (1987-present) as its object of study to provide a new account of French intellectual culture over the last twenty-five years. Whilst there are now many studies covering the role of such revues throughout the twentieth-century, the majority of such monographs extend no further than the mid-1980s: the major novelty of this thesis is extending these accounts up until the present moment. It is largely assumed that a reaction against the Marxist and structuralist theories of the 1960s and 1970s led to embrace of liberalism and an intellectual drift to the right in France from the 1980s onwards: whilst largely supporting this account, the thesis attempts to nuance this narrative of the fate of the intellectual left in the following years by showing the persistence of what can be called a politicised 'French theory' in Lignes, and a returning left-wing militancy in recent years. In doing so, it will both reveal under-studied aspects of well-known thinkers, such as Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière and Alain Badiou, as their thought develops through their participation in a collaborative, periodical publication, and introduce lesser known thinkers who have not received an extended readership in Anglophone spheres. Lignes also argues for the continued persistence and relevance of the thought of a previous generation of thinkers, notably Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot and Dionys Mascolo, and the thesis concludes by examining the potential role 'French Theory' could still have in France. Furthermore, as revues provide a unique nexus of intellectual, cultural, social and political concerns, the thesis also provides a unique history of France from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the 2007 financial crisis and the Arab Spring. Much of the thesis is concerned with contextualising intellectual debates within a period characterised by the moralisation of discourses, a return of religion, the global installation of neo-liberalism and the eruption of immigration as a controversial European issue. From a relatively theoretical and politically stable position to the left of the Parti socialiste, Lignes therefore provides a privileged vantage point for the mutations in French social and cultural life throughout the period.
