Stresses amongst primary school learners with learning problems in inclusive classrooms in an independent school

This study examines stresses experienced by primary school learners with learning problems in inclusive classrooms in an Independent School. Literature suggests that learners with learning problems experience more academic, emotional and social difficulties at school than do their peers without learning problems. The Transactional Model of stress was used as a point of departure for the qualitative empirical study to understand stress as it is experienced by three Grade 4 learners. Several school stresses were identified which contributed to unmet emotional and social needs. The three central sources of stress were classified as S1 (Inability to meet perceived/anticipated demand), S2 (Overload – too much expected) and S3 (Selfexpectations not met). The learners’ own suggestions regarding the relief of these stresses were examined and contributed to guidelines to assist teachers in relieving these stresses experienced by learners with learning problems in the inclusive classroom. / Psychology of Education / M. This thesis synthezises theories from intermedia studies, semiotics, Gestalt psychology, cognitive linguistics, cognitive psychology, cognitive poetics, reader response criticism, narratology and possible worlds-theories adjusted to literary studies. The aim is to provide a transdisciplinary explanatory model of the transaction between text and reader during the reading process resulting in the reader experiencing a mental, virtual world. Departing from Mitchells statement that all media are mixed media, this thesis points to Peirce’s tricotomies of different types of signs and to the relation between representamen (sign), object and interpretant, which states that the interpretant can be developed into a more complex sign, for example from a symbolic to an iconic sign. This is explained in cognitive science by the fact that our perceptions are multimodal. We can easily connect sounds and symbolic signs to images. Our brain is highly active in finding structures and patterns, matching them with structures already stored in memory. Cognitive semantics holds that such structures and schematic mental images form the basis for our understanding of concepts. In cognitive linguistics Lakoff and Johnsons theories of conceptual metaphors show that our bodily experiences are fundamental in thought and language, and that abstract thought is concretized by a metaphorical system grounded in our bodily, spatial experiences. Cognitive science has shown that we build situation models based on what the text describes. These mental models are simultaneously influenced by the reader’s personal world knowledge and earlier experiences. Reader response-theorists emphasize the number of gaps that a text leaves to the reader to fill in, using scripts. Eye tracking research reveals that people use mental imaging both when they are re-describing a previously seen picture and when their re-description is based purely on verbal information about a picture. Mental spaces are small conceptual packets constructed as we think and talk. A story is built up by a large number of such spaces and the viewpoint and focus changes constantly. There are numerous possible combinations and relations of mental spaces. For the reader it is important to separate them as well as to connect them. Mental spaces can also be blended. In their integration network model Fauconnier and Turner describe four types of blending, where the structures of the input spaces are blended in different ways. A similar act of separation and fusion is needed dealing with different diegetic levels and focalizations, the question of who tells and who sees in the text. Ryan uses possible worlds-theories from modal logic to describe fictional worlds as both possible and parallel worlds. While fictional worlds are comparable to possible worlds if seen as mental constructions created within our actual world, they must also be treated as parallel worlds, with their own actual, reference world from which their own logic stems. As readers we must recenter ourselves into this fictional world to be able to deal with states of affairs that are logically impossible in our own actual world. The principle of minimal departure states that during our recentering, we only make the adjustments necessary due to explicit statements in the text.

Text in German / Forschungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist das Bewältigungsverhalten von schwer kranken und sterbenden Menschen, die in einer Gesellschaft ihren bevorstehenden Tod bewältigen müssen, die ambivalent mit dieser Thematik umgeht. Die unterschiedlichen menschlichen Bewältigungsformen können mit den bisher gängigen Zugangswegen über Phasenmodelle nicht immer befriedigend erklärt werden. Hilfreich erscheint hier das aus der Stressforschung stammende Copingmodell von Richard S. Lazarus und seiner Forschungsgruppe, um Menschen verstehen zu lernen. In wieweit dieses Verstehensmodell aus einem säkularen Forschungszweig für die Seelsorgearbeit unterstützend sein kann, soll in dieser Arbeit geklärt werden. Als Grundlage dienen Seelsorgegespräche mit unterschiedlichen Menschen, die eine große Bandbreite an Bewältigungsverhalten demonstrierten. Die Herausforderung lag darin, Menschen in ihrem Sterben umfassend wahrzunehmen, um möglichst viele Impulse zu erkennen, die ihr Bewältigungsverhalten beeinflussten. Aus der Aufarbeitung dieses Verhaltens ergaben sich Perspektiven für die Begleitung sterbender Menschen. Dies hat gleichbedeutend Konsequenzen für den seelsorgerlichen Umgang mit Sterbenden. Das Wissen um das christlich-biblische Menschenbild und die umfassende Kenntnis der Copingforschung können sich durchaus gegenseitig befruchten, denn beide gehen auf die Individualität des Menschen ein und unterstützen ihn seinen eigenen Zugang zu seinem Leben und seinem Tod finden zu lassen. Dies führt letztlich zu einer intensiven Kommunikation zwischen Patient und Seelsorger, der den Mut und das Vertrauen haben darf, dem Sterbenden eigenständig sein Leben bewältigen zu lassen. Die Ansätze der Copingforschung bieten weitreichende Impulse für vielfältige seelsorgerliche Fragestellungen auch außerhalb der Sterbebegleitung. Object of research of this thesis is the specific behaviour of seriously ill and dying humans coping with their impending death and being members of a society having an ambivalent attitude towards death. People's different and individual ways of coping cannot always be sufficiently explained by the current use of phasing models. In this context the "Coping Model" by Richard S. Lazarus and his stress research group seems to be helpful in understanding dying humans. In how far this comprehension model from a secular branch of research can be supportive of pastoral counselling is the objective of this thesis. Counselling dialogues with different persons who show a wide range of coping form the basis of this research. The challenge of this paper was to observe and sense humans in their death experiences from a broader point of view in order to identify as much as possible kinds of impulses crucial to their coping behaviour. Analysing the behaviour of dying humans led to new perspectives on spiritual guidance. Tantamountly, this has its consequences for spiritual dealing with dying humans. The comprehension of the biblical Christian idea of man and a detailed knowledge of coping research can, by all means, be interactive and thus show positive results as both respond to a person's individuality and support them in their own ways of approach to life and death. Finally, this leads to an intensive dialogue between patient and pastor who can have the courage and the confidence in letting the person find his own way of coping. La méthodologie de l’évaluation en psychothérapie s’est longtemps limitée aux résultats issus d’essais cliniques comparatifs de groupes. L’objectif, engagé dans les années 2000, de comprendre ce qui cause son efficacité a engagé un renouvellement méthodologique. Son application concrète est peu documentée. La première partie présente, à partir d’une revue de la littérature centrée sur l’introduction de la recherche sur le processus associée aux résultats, comment le paradigme interactionnel multifactoriel de la psychothérapie a stimulé le développement de méthodes adaptées à la complexité et à l’observation en conditions naturelles. La seconde partie introduit autour de cinq axes principaux les questions méthodologiques générales et spécifiques de cette nouvelle orientation : 1. une épistémologie interactionnelle et transactionnelle ; 2. Un recentrage sur les études mixtes intensives de cas ; 3. Une investigation clinique et théorique multifocale des processus et mécanismes de changement ; 4. une forte relation clinicien-chercheur ; 5. une approche statistique innovante. La troisième partie expose l’expérience et les questions soulevées par la mise en œuvre de ce programme dans le cadre d’un réseau de recherche clinique centré sur les pratiques, du recueil des données jusqu’à l’analyse des processus et mécanismes de changement, et les résultats qui en sont issus. La quatrième partie présente une revue détaillée de la littérature. Ce travail devrait favoriser les collaborations avec les disciplines connexes et l’efficience des traitements par une meilleure connaissance des conditions et des mécanismes de changement associée au développement d’une base de données issue d’études de cas. / The methodology of assessment in psychotherapy has long been limited to results from comparative group clinical trials. The objective, expressed in the 2000s, to understand what is causing its effectiveness has involved a methodological renewal. Its concrete application is poorly documented. The first part presents, from a review of the literature focusing on the introduction of research on the process associated with outcomes, how the multifactorial interactional paradigm of psychotherapy has stimulated the development of methods adapted to the complexity and observation in natural conditions. The second part introduces the general and specific methodological questions of this new orientation around five main axes: 1. an interactional and transactional epistemology; 2. A refocusing on intensive mixed case studies; 3. A multifocal clinical and theoretical investigation of the processes and mechanisms of change; 4. a strong clinical-researcher relationship; 5. an innovative statistical approach. The third part presents the experience and issues raised by the implementation of this program as part of a practice-oriented clinical research network, from data collection to analysis of processes and mechanisms of change, and results. The fourth part presents a detailed review of the literature. This work should foster collaborations with related disciplines and treatment efficiency through a better understanding of the conditions and mechanisms of change associated with the development of a case study database.

Finansiella instrument : En rättsekonomisk analys av värdepappersmarknadens grundläggande rättshandlingar / Financial instruments : A law and economics analysis of the fundamental contracts of the capital markets

This thesis evaluates and constructs a general, product-neutral legal concept and model of financial instruments, as opposed to the product-dependent definitions currently employed in contemporary capital markets law. Through a combination of law and economics perspectives, legal history, and comparative analysis, the study examines the various types of financial instruments currently and previously in use. The legal characteristics and features of these instruments are evaluated and compared, leading to the identification of commonalities that can be used to define a product-neutral concept. The thesis argues that such a concept is more beneficial to the function of the capital markets by removing obstacles for financial innovation while also providing a consistent way to ensure that new financial products are governed by the same regulatory framework as comparable instruments.The thesis also examines the historical evolution of financial instruments and how it has been driven by the evolution of international trade and the demand and surplus of available capital. The proposed concept is applied to current financial instruments, including equity and debt, as well as pre-modern markets, and evaluated in terms of regulation, practical use, and legal characteristics such as transferability and negotiability.The research of this thesis encountered several challenges and limitations. Firstly, the historical and comparative analysis proved difficult to carry out, due to limitation in available source material and language related restrictions, respectively. These limitations were overcome by limiting the scope and by employing contacts with law firms in the respective jurisdictions. Secondly, several key issues proved to require further research to be able to provide definitive conclusions. Such research would have been out of scope and as such, simplified explanations and models were employed. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the practical implications of the proposed concept, including its application to cryptocurrencies and similar assets, and identifies potential areas for future research.
