The book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, written by the prolific author J.K.Rowling, is a popular piece of fiction that has been adapted into a film as well as severalvideogames. The book has also been translated from its original English into dozens oflanguages, including Japanese. Translations can differ from their original counterparts,especially when the languages in question differ in their syntax and cultural norms. Thesedifferences can potentially alter the original author’s intended character portrayals.This project aimed to evaluate the effect of gendered language and yakuwarigo on charactervoices in the Japanese translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Fourcharacters – Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledore, and McGonagall – were evaluated bymeans of their spoken dialogue in the book. The English lines of dialogue and their Japanesecounterparts were extracted from the book and analysed.The results of the dialogue-analysis show that the dialogue in the Japanese version of thebook was more gendered, and exhibited typical signs of role language. These findingswere corroborated through the use of separate questionnaires for Japanese and Englishparticipants. The questionnaires asked participants to determine the gender and role ofcharacters purely on the basis of certain lines in the book, with no external contextprovided. Japanese participants managed to identify both the gender and role of charactersmore accurately.

This thesis examines the study of national character through the work of the psychologist Erich Fromm, the sociologist David Riesman, and the historian David Potter. Above all Intend to provide a critical exegesis of the three thinkers will relate them to one another by discussing the Interconnections In their thought, beginning with Fromm's social psychological theory of character, turning to Riesman's theory of sociology and, finally, Potter's theory of American history. Each, I argue, must be studied in the context his time--above all the climate of horror and uncertainty at mid-century.

Studies shows that youths today read books less frequently than before. This is, in my opinion problematic. This study aims towards an understanding in how the Harry Potter novels can enrich the teaching in upper secondary school in Sweden in the education of religions and ethics, for students to reflect, and discuss different topics of value. The novels are incorporated with lots of good options for values, including the equal value of people, feminism and masculism and cultural racism. The study is made with help of narrative analysis. The results show that this book offers a lot of value in teaching situations and therefore the conclusion is that fantasy novels can be used to discuss problematic issues in society by using the different examples in the books as allegories.

Vi vuxna känner igen en hel del schablonbilder i Harry Potter-böckerna; vi har stött på namnen och företeelserna förut i myter, religion och i symbolvärlden. Men de yngre läsarna med föga eller ingen tidigare läsvana, som troligtvis aldrig har stött på ”de gamla litterära motiven” tidigare, attraheras ändå av böckerna. Frågan jag därför ställer är om de unga läsarna enbart fascineras av äventyren, spänningen och humorn i böckerna. Eller om det finns något i människans inre som tilltalas av den dolda innebörden i texterna, som förmedlas av symbolerna och myterna i berättelserna. Finns det sålunda något i vårt gemensamma undermedvetna, i enlighet med Jungs teorier och tankemodeller om bl.a. det kollektivt undermedvetna, som tillfredsställs och som därmed kan förklara varför Harry Potter-böckerna gjort sådan succé? Mitt syfte är alltså att försöka upptäcka om det finns något i Jungs sätt att beskriva det mänskliga psyket som kan appliceras på Harry Potter-böckerna och som kan klargöra varför dessa tilltalar så många. Jag kommer fram till att det tydligt framgår hur C. G. Jungs förklaringsmodeller kan tillämpas i analys av Rowlings verk. Jag finner att de arketypiska strukturerna föreligger som grundmönster i romanernas komposition och struktur. De arketypiska tolkningarna bidrar till en ökad förståelse och en fördjupad upplevelse av berättelserna om Harry Potter. Det som från början verkade vara ren underhållning för barn visade sig ha ett psykologiskt djup som har rötter till mytologi, sagor och religion. Jag ställer mig därför tveksam till om Harry Potter-böckerna i själva verket är tänkta som barn och ungdomsböcker, strukturen verkar alltför komplicerad för att så vara fallet. Jag har upptäckt att det finns likheter och samband mellan Rowlings romaner och ett flertal mytologiska och religiösa motiv. Till stor del har alltså Jungs teorier visat sig vara tillämpliga på litteratur som utkommit mycket länge efter hans död, vilket kan bekräfta hans teorier.

Nadie puede negar que Harry Potter es un fenómeno de las comunicaciones y la nueva era digital, por ello ha sido constante objeto de estudio de muchas personas que se han preguntado ¿cómo ha sido tan exitoso? Las personas han intentado replicar ese modelo, incluso a partir de Harry Potter han tomado patrones para hacer campañas, marketing u otros. Uno de los ejemplos más interesantes que se ha imitado a partir de Harry Potter es dividir un libro (finalmente una historia) en una película de dos partes, que sucedió con ‘Harry Potter y las reliquias de la muerte’ y que ha funcionado para otras películas como ‘Los juegos del hambre’ y ‘El hobbit’. Algo que no deja de sorprender a la mayoría de investigadores del fenómeno Potter es cómo Harry ha tenido tanto éxito a lo largo del periodo en que se ha estado publicando, y al mismo tiempo se ha enraizado en la mente de los consumidores, generando algo totalmente sin precedentes en cuanto a literatura infantil. Alohomora es un encantamiento que permite abrir puertas, ventanas u otros. Una apertura nos permite observar dentro de algo y éste precisamente es el objetivo del presente trabajo, el ser una pequeña ventana que nos da acceso a atisbar desde una perspectiva escogida el inmenso mundo Potter. Hay muchas más cosas que se pueden analizar del universo Harry, que es tan rico y tan variado que desborda temas como la política, la simbología, la lucha de poderes, el feminismo y otro tipo de categorías que se ven en la historia y podría seguir enumerando. A pesar de que el libro es tan hondo que podría tener varias tesis sobre un millón de temas, éstos no son objeto del presente estudio.Lo que intento analizar, que empieza en el capítulo uno con la delimitación y planteamiento del problema, es especificar y verificar al objeto de estudio del presente trabajo, que es Harry Potter, en tres aristas distintas que sustentan su transmediaticidad: tribus urbanas, prosumerismo y web 2.0 Durante el segundo capítulo recojo las teorías pertinentes para que éste estudio pueda estar fundamentado. La base teórica va desde revistas, documentos pdf, videos en YouTube, artículos online, y sobre todo libros. Todo esto enriquece el estudio de una manera significativa y también lo sostienen. En el capítulo tres hablo sobre la metodología utilizada para el estudio y las herramientas principales con las que se analiza a Harry Potter, a partir de varias técnicas como la observación participante, las entrevistas, el focus group, el análisis del musical y de Pottermore. Todas estas herramientas potencian los datos recogidos y fortalecen el estudio, puesto que la teoría por sí sola no se sostiene si no hay una praxis que la respalde. En el capítulo cuatro se analiza todo lo que las herramientas han obtenido, entrando en asuntos tan sustanciales sobre cómo era la dinámica entre los agentes de la tribu urbana Orden del Sol, cómo es que Pottermore era un ejemplo de web 2.0 y cómo evolucionó, cómo así el musical es un caso de prosumerismo. Analizo cada una de estas vertientes en favor de entender un poco más el fenómeno, no sólo examinarlo de manera descriptiva sino el poder contraponerlo con la teoría. Finalmente, en el capítulo cinco apunto las conclusiones finales del estudio, asegurando si es que la hipótesis con la cual partí es correcta o no, al igual que plantear algunas recomendaciones para lo que podría ser el futuro de la web Pottermore, puesto que para los otros dos objetos de estudio se esboza escuetamente durante el capítulo tres. La présente thèse porte sur l’improvisation jazz, et plus particulièrement sur sa pratique sans accompagnement au saxophone. Cette pratique est efficace surtout pour les musiciens qui jouent des instruments monodiques, comme le saxophone. L’objectif est d’analyser la compétence de certains saxophonistes en ce qui concerne surtout l’habileté de bien utiliser mélodiquement le contenu harmonique présent dans l’ensemble des standards qui font partie intégrante du répertoire jazz. La démarche de recherche adoptée est constituée, dans un premier temps, d’une recherche de plusieurs points de vue chez différents musiciens de jazz reconnus mondialement qui ont intégré la pratique sans accompagnement systématiquement dans leur routine. Dans un deuxième temps, des transcriptions d’extraits d’improvisations sans accompagnement ont été réalisées, avec un approfondissement quant à la pratique du saxophoniste Chris Potter. Ces transcriptions, qui ont été faites au saxophone ténor (donc sur un instrument transpositeur en si bémol), ont été analysées théoriquement afin d’identifier la manière dont le saxophoniste intègre le concept d’improvisation harmonique. Après ces analyses théoriques, l’auteur présente son point de vue concernant les moyens utilisés par Chris Potter pour faire ressortir l’harmonie à travers la mélodie improvisée. L’étape suivante a consisté à l’appropriation des moyens liés à la pratique sans accompagnement en tant que saxophoniste, permettant de mieux intégrer les aspects harmoniques des standards étudiés pour améliorer la qualité des improvisations lors du jeu en groupe. Finalement, les résultats obtenus permettent d’observer que la pratique de l’improvisation jazz sans accompagnement à travers le concept d’improvisation harmonique améliore la performance dans une situation réelle de concert.

The thesis looks at fan translation of fiction, a phenomenon that, unlike fan translation of anime and videogames, has been mostly overlooked by translation studies until recently. More specifically, we examine fan translations of Harry Potter books. The thesis aims to address a wide range of aspects pertaining to fan translation of fiction. In the opening chapters, it gives a brief overview of the history of fan translation in general and of research papers dedicated to the subject. Based on comparison with fan translations of anime and videogames, the thesis defines functions of fan translations of fiction in relation to official translations. The phenomenon of fan translation of fiction is then set in a wider context, one chapter detailing its relation to fan communities and one addressing the question of copyright. The nature of fan translations of fiction is further explored through comparison with official translations, which in this particular case focuses on Czech translations of Harry Potter books. First, we compare the translation process in case of both official and fan translations and then chosen extracts from the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
