The general objective of this study was to investigate the inclusive school culture from the perspective of deaf students who study in the context of regular education. Aside from the bibliographic sources recompiled and read, covered with importance by being able to provide actual and relevant informations, also was held semistructured interviews, with theoretical benchmark in Pierre Bourdieu (2013). The interviews happened in one of the classrooms of the school that has as proposal the bilingual education for deaf. The questions were made in Brazilian signals language (Libras) by the researcher – who has a degree in Mathematics as well as of Translator and Interpreter of Libras/Portuguese -.The interviews were made at the end of June, during July and beginning of August 2016. It is emphasized that in the moment of the interview only the researcher and the interviewed person remained in the room, in order to preserve the anonymity. The participants of this research were deaf students who studied from kindergarten until the elementary school in a school with a proposal of bilingual education for the deaf and that nowadays attend to an inclusive regular school. The participants of this research were deaf students who studied from kindergarten until the elementary school in a school with a proposal of bilingual education for the deaf and that nowadays attend to an inclusive regular school. Therefore, the results obtained along the research presented difficulty in the participants’ inclusion development based on the respect for their cultural and linguistic differences, in the inclusive state school, since the school did not reach to overcome the tendency of a homogenization culture present in the “school culture”. Thus, for inclusion of deaf students in the school environment, it is fundamental to adapt this environment so that the individuals in question feel part of a whole. It is necessary to elaborate the inclusion as a broad process, with ideological, social, cultural, political and economic dimensions, involving all the interpersonal relationship existing in the school and outside it. It is considered necessary to be cautious so that school inclusion is not caught in the trap of standardization, or rather, in the deaf student’s inclusion in the mainstream education being the sign language seen as a set of facilitating codes of communication, as teaching instrument, disregarding the cultural nature present in Libras / La educación inclusiva ha sido tema de discusión mundial desde la década de 1990, provocando el inicio de perspectivas y enfrentamientos de obstáculos en su proceso de concreción.

Linda Derviche Blaj 18 November 2008 (has links)
The dissertation Sukot and Purim Festivities in Childrens Education: a gathering of infancy and the Jewish Culture, corresponds to a parcel of the Childrens Education curriculum in the Jewish schools of the city of Sao Paulo. / This research is study about a school with approximately 256 students, that meets the Initial Years of the Basic Schoolings and belongs to the State Education System of Minas Gerais, in the outskirts of a medium-sized town of about fifty-six thousand inhabitants in “Zona da Mata Mineira”. As problem, falling school educational results; unruly pupils, violent and not yet literate in the 5th year and; apparently unmotivated teachers. In the analysis of this work was considered: the development of Pedagogical Intervention Literacy Program in a timely manner (PIP/ATC) of the Education Office of the State of Minas Gerais – which is a follow-up action and direct intervention on the schools; the inseparability of teaching and care – under the guidelines of the CNE/CEB 7/2010; school climate and culture; the results of the students’ performance in external evaluations and; the performance of school management. As proposed action to improve the results of student learning, the paper presents a mediation in which are considered the contextual factors - within and outside school. Among the factors that prompted the research include: the restlessness of the researcher after the change of its function in education; the perception that the school still reproducing social inequality in inequality of access to learning conditions; the questioning of the effectiveness of policies in the top/down model (DYE 2009); external intervention in the daily school to ensure institutional goals and; the apparent omission by the educational system of the influence of contextual factors on learning outcomes. The research objectives are: (i) Analyze how the school deals with the fall of educational outcomes in their day to day, in the midst of violence and indiscipline of students and an apparent lack of motivation among school personnel; (ii) Reveal the impediments for schooling quality for all students; (iii) Reflect on the nature and action of pedagogical interventions, considering the conceptions of school culture, educational climate and effectiveness in education management; (iv) Propose a mediating action, to consider the contextual factors and contribute to the equitable development of students and a school climate more favourable for learning.

School library: a tool for developing the school’s operating culture

Kurttila-Matero, E. (Eeva) 09 December 2011 (has links)
Abstract The aim of this study was to increase understanding of the dimensions of the school’s operating culture in general and pedagogical practices in particular in the context of the School Library of the Information Society project (SLI). The purpose was to describe development in the school’s operating culture as perceived by teachers and principals. The background for the study was the historical basis of Finnish school libraries and the starting point and aims of the SLI project. The analysis of the complex concept of the school’s operating culture was inspired by the Activity Theoretical Model put forth by Yrjö Engeström. The operating culture consists of 1) tools, which are the school library and teaching methods, 2) rules, consisting of different statutes and the curriculum, 3) the school community, including teachers, pupils, and parents, and 4) a division of labor, including resources for librarianship. Teachers and principals are the subjects who work together to improve pedagogical practices. The shared metatheories of Information Studies and Educational Sciences were scrutinized from the viewpoint of learning literacies. The impact of the SLI project was evaluated through all these factors. This was a qualitative case study. The follow-up time was seven years. The data are comprised of the yearly reports of eleven elementary schools collected during the SLI project in 2002–2004 and group interviews conducted in 2009. The use of methodological triangulation and the follow-up design add to the validity of the study. QSRNVivo software facilitated management and analysis of the data. Application of the activity theoretical model gives external validity to the study. All eleven elementary schools developed their library space and collection, which was given a more central role in relation to the curriculum and the pupils’ work. An information literacy curriculum was developed in some schools. Library teachers’ resources could not be increased. Collaboration increased between the teachers and the pupils, and with other schools, the public library, and the Education Department. Teaching information literacy and pedagogical use of information technology were developed. The limitation of this study is the fact that the researcher acted as the project coordinator in the SLI project and knew the interviewees, who probably for this reason wanted to give positive statements. However, the researcher’s familiarity with the research subject helped in recognizing significant aspects of the data. The model of the school’s operating culture can be used and further tested in different school and school library development projects. The activity theoretical Learning Commons Model developed in this study connects education authorities and the public library to the school’s collaborative network. This model should be examined, as it may serve as an analytical tool for developing learning environments and an instrument of developmental work research. / Tiivistelmä Tämän tutkimuksen päämääränä on lisätä ymmärrystä koulun toimintakulttuurin ulottuvuuksista yleensä ja erityisesti pedagogisista käytännöistä Oulussa toteutetun Tietoyhteiskunnan koulukirjasto -hankkeen (TKK) yhteydessä. Toimintakulttuurin kehitystä kuvataan opettajien ja rehtoreiden näkökulmasta. Tarkastelua taustoitetaan kuvaamalla suomalaisten koulukirjastojen historialliset lähtökohdat sekä tutkimuskohteena olevien oululaisten koulujen TKK-hankkeen lähtökohdat ja tavoitteet. Teoreettisessa tarkastelussa koulun toimintakulttuurin määrittelyn pohjana on Yrjö Engeströmin toiminnan teorian malli. Tutkimus on laadullinen tapaustutkimus. Aineisto käsittää yhdentoista alakoulun projektiraportit vuosilta 2002–2004 ja ryhmähaastattelut vuodelta 2009. Aineistotriangulaatiolla ja seitsemän vuoden seurannalla pyrittiin tutkimuksen luotettavuuden lisäämiseen. QSRNVivo-ohjelma helpotti aineiston hallintaa ja analysointia. Toiminnan teorian käyttö toimintakulttuurin mallintamiseen systematisoi analyysiä ja lisäsi ulkoista validiteettia. Koulukirjastot kehittyivät tiloiltaan ja aineistoiltaan ja niiden rooli vahvistui opetussuunnitelmassa ja oppilaiden työskentelyssä. Tiedonhankinnan opetussuunnitelma kehittyi osassa kouluja. Toisaalta tutkijan perehtyneisyys tutkimuskohteeseen helpotti merkityksellisten näkökohtien tunnistamista. Koulun toimintakulttuurin mallia voidaan käyttää ja testata edelleen koulun ja koulukirjastojen kehittämishankkeissa. Tutkimuksen pohjalta syntyi toiminnanteoreettinen learning commons -malli, joka liittää koulun yhteistyöverkostoon opetustoimen ja yleisen kirjaston. Tätä mallia voidaan käyttää ja edelleen kehittää oppimisympäristöjen tutkimuksessa ja kehittävässä työntutkimuksessa.

School climate of adult basic education centres

Nkosi, Monde Eustice Gideon 12 September 2008 (has links)
This study explored the school climate of adult basic education centres by investigating the extent to which these education centres showed evidence of control, staff cohesiveness, physical resources, and safe and orderly environment. The study was inspired by a lack of school climate studies that focused on adult basic education centres as many school climate studies had concentrated on investigating the school climate of primary and secondary schools. The broad research question which was addressed in the research study was: ‘What is the nature of the school climate of adult basic education centres as perceived by educators?’ The participating educators were randomly selected and a survey – in the form of a questionnaire – was administered. The questionnaire comprised the four scales mentioned above. The items from the four scales were validated through the use of both face and content-related validity procedures. Face validity was ensured through pre-testing. Content validity was achieved through expert review of the items used. The extent to which these items could be included as part of a scale was further explored by means of reliability analysis whose acceptable coefficient alpha was benchmarked at 0.65 and above. Reliability was used to explore the reliability of the questionnaire. The aspect of reliability used for this purpose was analysis of internal consistency. The main purpose was to ascertain whether all the items used in the four scales collectively measured the construct school climate. For example, the reliability analysis for the variable control had 0.79 as its coefficient alpha whilst the reliability analysis for the variable staff cohesiveness, physical resources and safe and orderly environment had 0.76, 0.89, 0.84 as corresponding coefficient alpha respectively. This implied that most items within the four scales measured the construct control, staff cohesiveness, physical resources, safe and orderly environment as part of the construct school climate. Furthermore, the coefficient alphas of these four scales compared well with the overall coefficient alpha of 0.84 for this study, which further implied that each of the scales had an immense contribution in the measurement of the construct school climate. Based on the scale rubric designed for the variable control (high score 28-21: moderate score 20-14; low score 13-0), the results from the analysis indicated that the centres under review had a fair level of control mechanisms in place as in all these centres the mean score varied between 23 and 25. On the basis of the scale rubric devised for staff cohesiveness (high score 32-24; moderate score 23-16; low score 15-0), it was also revealed that the majority of the centres had evidence of staff cohesiveness, as no low score was recorded for in most cases the mean score revolved between 22 and 25. Although, the results further indicated that there was an average degree of physical resources in most centres, it also became clear that not all centres had the same level of physical resources at their disposal as the majority of the centres had a mean score that fluctuated between 18 and 33. The scale rubric for physical resources was: between 40-30 for high score; between 29-20 for moderate score and between 19-0 for low score. Finally, the mean score for the variable safe and orderly environment alternated between the minimum mean score of 17 and the maximum mean score of 21. Based on the latter mean scores, it became clear that the majority of the centres had a safe and orderly environment level that fell within the moderate score category (between 20-14) whilst the remaining two centres had a high score category (between 28-21) and no centre had a low score category (between 13-0). / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted
