Haglund, Valda January 2022 (has links)
Problem and purpose: The study concern what role the school library play for students reading habits, and which conditions are required to contribute to students' civic education. The purpose is to create an understanding of the school library's activities, as an institution within the Swedish school system, and its role for education through the development and establishment of high school students' reading habits. Method and theory: The study is a case study where the data material was collected via qualitative semistructured interviews. Natasha Gerolami's theory of the library as an arrangement forms the theoretical basis of this study where concepts are taken from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's posthumanist theory. Materials and results: Through qualitative semi-structured interviews with a teacher and two school librarians, it is shown that the school library plays an important role for students' knowledge development but also for a number of alternative roles. In the reading promotion developmental work, it emerged that cooperation and collaboration between different actors is important. Conclusions: In the analysis of the school library's role in students' reading habits that has been carried out, a tension emerges between considering the school library as a goal-oriented institution in relation to considering it as an assemblage. When the school library, which in this study is regarded as an institutional arrangement, the image of a creative and productive place emerges, a place for ‘becoming’, which thus highlights its social role. From this point of view, there is also a caring role that also includes care for the students' civic ‘bildung’, and that development work can be understood as focused on creation, and not primarily on finances and efficiency towards pre-defined goals.

: A qualitative study on collaboration between 3rd grade teachers and school librarians in order to advance students’ achievements in reading comprehension

Krslak, Elvir January 2019 (has links)
In this study, a total of five teachers were interviewed in grade three from four different schools in Stockholm. Three of these schools are located in different suburbs and one school is located in the central part of Stockholm. The starting point of the study is statistics that show a negative development with, in particular, the students who have Swedish as a second language. This study provides an insight into how teachers in grade three of elementary school in Stockholm work with their students to develop reading comprehension. In the study of reading comprehension, this study focuses on the Reciprocal Teaching (RT) method. RT is a well-established reading comprehension strategy designed to bridge the difference between poor readers and good readers. The study shows that not all teachers are familiar with the RT method and also that teachers do not work consistently with all parts of this method. Furthermore, the study also gives an insight into the question of whether the teachers see the librarian as a possible partner in the process. To measure the level at which the teachers collaborate with school librarians, Montiel-Overall's (2005) Teacher Librarian Collaboration (TLC) theory was chosen. TLC theory is an attempt to make practical use of Loertscher’s taxonomy by grouping the low, medium and high levels of collaboration into four models (Model A: coordination, Model B: cooperation, Model C: integrated instruction and Model D: integrated curriculum.) that help define and measure the effect of each model on students’ achievements. This study concludes that the teachers so far haven’t thought about their school librarian as a potential partner with the stated purpose of increasing the students' reading comprehension. The levels of collaboration are predominantly on the low end of the TLC models (Model A: coordination, Model B: cooperation), meaning that teachers and librarians help each other for mutual benefit but no conscious effort is made to plan, teach and evaluate together.

Stridh, Isabell, Svedlund, Evelina January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study was to, through a qualitative method, investigate students’ participation in a specific library blog to find out what motivate them to create and share digital book recommendations through videos. It also intended to describe the students’ own views of their participation. We conducted interviews with eight students in the ages 12 and 13, who all had similar experiences regarding the blog creation but diverse attitudes concerning the blog production and intentions to participate. The results showed that the strongest motivating forces behind the students' participation in the blog creation was that they enjoyed the making of the videos and also because they wanted to inspire others to read more and create resembling blogs.

Ger det själen vingar? : En studie i användningen av barnlitteratur i fritidshem / Does it give wings to the soul? : A study in the use of children’s literature in leisure centers

Ghavidel Rostami, Berit January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to investigate and shed light on how children’s literature is used in the after – school center, if there are any conversations with children’s literature as a starting point and if children’s literature and conversation from the books are used as tools to let students process issues concerning themselves, their lives and their thoughts. The servey was conducted in the form of a web-based questionnaire and the questionnaire responses were then analyzed from three different theoretical perspectives: a socio-cultural perspective, an environmental psychological perspective and Aidan Chamber’s model The Reading Circle. From the point of view of the socio-cultural perspective, communication and language are in focus and the interplay between the common thinking and the individual’s thinking is a prerequisite for development and learning. This perspective is set in relation to how conversation about read books can become tools for students’ development. The environmental psychological perspective in this work is about how noise affects students’ concentration and analytical ability, how the design of the room affects students’ views of both themselves and what the room should be used for and that the environment is also a matter of social impact. The reading circle offers a holistic perspective on the reading process, which is about choosing a book, reading the book, being able to reflect on and react to the book’s content, and then want to start over with the next book. Conclusions drawn from this study are that children’s literature is used in leisure centers to varying degrees, that the physical environment in the form of, for example, limited opportunities for quiet places affects the extent of student’s individual reading, and that books discussions and structured reflections based on children’s literature occur to a very limited extent.
