Will I Ever Be Enough? : A Marxist Analysis of Women Protesting Obligatory Veiling in the Islamic Republic of Iran

Ahmadi, Sanaz January 2018 (has links)
The My Stealthy Freedom (MSF) movement on social media has garnered over 1 million likes on Facebook and continues to make headlines in major media outlets. The founder Masih Alinejad routinely speaks out against obligatory veiling in the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). This study analyses hijab and the MSF movement from a Marxist feminist perspective, evaluating the emancipatory potential for women. The study attempts to untangle Islam from the discourses around the oppression of women to find the material roots of oppression upon which the discourse has been built. The legislation of women’s clothing and women’s bodies has a long history, with just the hijab having been made compulsory and forbidden three times in Iran within the previous century. Through the use of Multimodal Critical Discourse analysis, photographs and videos from the MSF movement are compared to hijab propaganda by the IRI to identify whether the concern of the MSF movement is limited to obligatory hijab, or if it places within the broader movement for women’s emancipation. The results show that despite the visual emphasis on the hijab, the MSF movement has a broader aim emancipating women as expressed by the activists of the movement.

Karel Kosík v kontextu marxistického myšlení (osobnost a rozbor díla) / Karel Kosík in the context of Marxism (personality and analysis of work)

ADAM, Marek January 2010 (has links)
This diploma thesis brings the description of life and work one of the foremost intellectuals of twentieth century, philosopher Karel Kosík (1926-2003). Karel Kosík was a philosopher, who holds an idea of ``Open Marxism``. This intellectual trend was practically one and only system, which could in time of communism totality ask for dialogue with other intellectual movements. Except philosophy of history Kosík´s work go beyond to the areas of history, sociology, philosophical anthropology and literature. Kosík became the front ideological representative of Prague Spring. Kosík abid his ideals of ``socialism with human face`` even in the totalitarian times during years 1970-1989, when he was as enemy of regime removed from the academical world. After year 1989, when he returned for short at Charles University (1990-1992) he stayed devoted for the ``Open Marxism`` as a leading left-wing philosopher. He was forced to leave his position at university in 1992, allegedly because of his age. Diploma thesis is divided in five chapters. The first chapter describes Kosík´s philosophy in the contemporary context of marxism, the second one gives facts about Kosík´s life story, the third is focused on analysis of Kosík´s work, the fourth inquires into contemporary reception of the Kosík´s person and fifth chapter is intent on Kosík´s relevance and legacy for our presence and future. In Appendix are added copies of some archival materials provided by Literature archive of Museum of Czech Literature in Prague and Archive of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague.

A sociological study on the availability of foundations and its correlation to norms of whiteness

Jonsson, Linnea January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this sociological study is to understand whiteness in relation to available selections of makeup products. The research was made in a small town in Sweden. Data has been gathered from local stores and their selection of makeup with availability of makeup that resembles and matches ones own skin color. The theory includes earlier studies that are considered relevant for the study and also historical background. This is used to explain how whiteness is produced and reproduced and the notion of Swedes as white and discoures therein. The result show that 99 percent of makeup available is for white skin not for dark skin. The reproduction of whiteness directly dictates the available selection of makeup. This confirms the aim of the study that dark skin is excluded and that whiteness in relation to available makeup.

Hétu, Arnaud 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to offer a new conceptual framework within which to study Marxism and, a fortiori, its Leninist interpretation. We retrace in the works of Karl Marx (1818-1883) two paradigms elaborated consecutively: anthropo-metaphysical paradigm, understood as both in continuity and in rupture with German classical philosophy, and economico-historical paradigm, which conveys the theory of historical materialism. We demonstrate how economico-historical paradigm consolidates itself on the basis of anthropo-metaphysical paradigm in order that the latter yield scientific systematicity. To grasp the foundations of Leninism, we restrain our investigation to three key notions from which to evaluate Lenin’s original contribution to the writings of Marx: (1) the alliance of the proletariat and the peasantry, (2) the vanguard role of the party, and (3) the dictatorship of the proletariat and political violence. We note that the Leninist interpretation of each of these notions rests on a certain amount of concepts or positions present in the Marxist corpus. From this ascertainment, our task is to establish from which paradigmatic framework Leninism has established itself as a doctrine.

Den nakna kvinnan på hyllan : En studie kring kvinnokroppen som inredningsobjekt / The Naked Woman on the Shelf : The female body as interior design

Clinton Svensson, Molly January 2022 (has links)
The intent of this paper is to study the growing trend of depicting the female body in interior design and the creators behind them. The naked female body is a recurring subject in western european art, often depicted as an object of desire in line with the conventions and ideas of the time. A rising interest in interior design along with feminisms body positivity movement has led to a wide range of products on the market depicting the female body. However these products may not always be aligned with feminist values and could instead be seen as objectifying and upholding old art traditions. By looking at different categories of producers, the study analyzes the creators intention and how this affects the meaning and interpretation of the piece. The analysis is done using feminism, marxism, and semiotic theory as theoretical frameworks. Smaller creators operating on instagram, have used the naked female body as an expression against patriarchal views with an intention to portray the female body as naked instead of nude for the male gaze. The intention is clear as well as the presence  of the creator in the handmade objects. In contrast, for big companies that massproduce through factory manufacturing the intention gets lost and the hands that create are left anonymous. This results in a different interpretation of the female body and a higher risk of objectification.

Marx est-il individualiste?

Champagne, Pier-Yves 30 August 2016 (has links)
Of the many possible readings of Marx's work, those of Michel Henry and Serge Cantin have the advantage, when compared side by side, to bring out certain tensions that exist between the communitarian and libertarian dimensions of Marx's thought. On the one hand, Michel Henry emphasizes the individualistic aspect of Marxian ontology. Cantin, on the other hand, shows how Marx tends to deny this individuality in favor of an objective process that underlies this individuality, namely, that of life itself. The purpose of this thesis is to present these two opposing views individually and then to have them interact with each other. The guiding question is whether, despite their apparent opposition, some form of reconciliation is possible. It turns out that, apart from a few common point that are brought to light, these two readings do not lend themselves to any significant rapprochement.

Bocquet, Karine 08 November 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to rethink Michel Foucault's writings in the light of a notion - the notion of practice - whose strenght and interest will be emphasized. More specifically as an intensive and plastic notion and in contrast with a unifying concept. Indeed, at a time when practice emerges as a concept which has been philosophically, sociologically and politically overdetermined, Foucault follows his own path, both refusing to ascribe a synthetic function and a theoretical reach to practice. This approach particularly arose at the height of a central and decisive turning-point in his writings - in the early 70's - a practical moment this work aims at redifining and making stand out. Such a refusal of the theoretical synthesis is precisely linked with Foucault's original approach and with the specificity of the fields he explores. Since then, as regards this hypothesis, a new light is likely to be thrown on the genesis of his works. Given the first works are definitely characterized by a prominence of experience, a movement gradually comes into view making practice stand out from experience so as to reach the critical moment of the collapse of theory into practice, this one finally turning into the "practices of the self". Thanks to this process which points out the meaningful elements devoted to practice, it can then be seen that in the wake of the two major moments of Foucault's works - The Order of things ont he one hand, Discipline and punish, The Will to knowledge on the other hand - all the critical stakes are focused on the status given to practice which proves its importance in order to grasp Foucault's gesture.

Critical thinking produces lasting knowledge : A litterateur study on why critical thinking is necessary for student’s development, Illustrated through the high school subject religion and science in religion studies

Annis, Nicole January 2019 (has links)
This essay will present a discussion about why critical thinking is crucial for student’s long-term development with the subject religion and science in high school religion as an example of how this can be fulfilled. Three different theories will be applied in this essay in order to form a comprehensive discussion. The three different theories presented in the theoretical framework are, John Dewey ‘s pragmatism, Hannah Arendt’s Natality and Paulo Freire’s Marxist theory. The subject religion and science was only recently added to the most updated curriculum, which has led to teachers taking it more seriously. Prior to that it was only a topic, which could or could not have been excluded. Now that it is included in the curriculum, new teaching approaches and learning strategies are necessary because of its density. The relationship between religion and science has several different perspectives and attitudes meaning that student’s can freely adapt their own because basically, no opinion or answer is wrong. Student’s can analyze, think critically and then develop his or her own understandings of the topic. The teacher must remain unbiased when teaching this topic so student’s can eventually develop his or her own creative views and opinions on the subject being studied. The schools curriculum emphasizes the fact that student’s are to develop his or her own creative opinions in life that will eventually contribute to society. The curriculum also stresses the importance of developing critical thinking and the ability to reflect. Critical thinking is a useful skill for all subject and matter and life however, it is not something that can develop on its own. Through reflection, and sufficient amount of guidance, the student’s ability to think critically will develop and progress into life long knowledge. Moreover, new knowledge that is reflected upon and critically analyzed will be memorized competently.

O cinema de Ken Loach e a refuncionalização de materiais estético-políticos / The cinema of Ken Loach and the refunctionalization of aesthetic-political materials

Maria, Cristiane Toledo 05 November 2010 (has links)
This research aims at understanding the aesthetical-political project of the English filmmaker Ken Loach in the course of the history of political art, and as a result of the historical process of crisis of the Left and fragmentation of the working class, intensified throughout the second half of the 20th century. We observe the ways in which the work of Ken Loach establishes relations between the making of a form which possesses a rescue of formal elements (such as melodrama, naturalism, Italian neorealism and Czech New Wave) that have a utopian potential in their origin, and the search for themes that make the class struggle explicit. The refunctionalization of those aesthetical materials brings him closer to the Benjaminian conception of History and the political assumptions of the epic theater of Bertolt Brecht. The movies used as basis for the analysis are Land and Freedom (1995) and Carlas Song (1996), movies whose themes emphasize moments of real states of exception, such as the Spanish civil war and the Nicaraguan revolution. Besides, both films bring about the discussion over the role of political cinema, its possibilities and limitations inside the cultural industry and the socio-historical conjuncture of the end of the 20th century
