Investigating the awareness of Decolonial perspectives among undergraduate Sport Science students in the Netherlands

Kunert, Jakob, Skvarnavics, Janis January 2021 (has links)
In the world of research, the decolonial perspective is not a field to study but a way of thinking and to exist in the world. This perspective sees the current form of "research" as something linked to European imperialism and colonialism in history that, until this day, still overshadows other ways of knowing and creating information (Liebel, 2017).In this qualitative research, we explored how aware of coloniality are international sports students in the Dutch context since Europe was the epicenter of colonialism. What do students know about colonialism and the decolonial perspective? Moreover, do these students consider it necessary to reflect their own knowledge through decolonial perspectives if they have a concept of it? This research aims to investigate the level of awareness among international undergraduate Sport studies science students regarding colonialism and its effects on their education. It further explores to what extent these students are being taught decolonial approaches and critical thinking skills to unbiasedly scrutinize the current world of academia. The research uses an exploratory research design employing a qualitative research method, in-depth semi-structured interviews to collect the data. Semi-structured interviews use a blend of closed and open-ended questions, leaving room for follow-up and how questions and through that can reveal unexpected insights and information throughout the interview (Adams, 2015). The collected data is analyzed by adapting the composite narratives approach by mapping similar information together from various interviews and creating two different story narratives using fictional characters (John and Nicol). The stories are then interpreted based on the theoretical framework of the research, which draws upon a critical perspective on the house of modernity, and epistemological violence. The results revealed that students lack the basic understanding and awareness of the concept of colonialism and its effects on their current education. The Sport studies Bachelors' level education program under investigation is not inclined to go outside the borders of the status quo and does not encourage their students to explore other ways of interpreting information such as the Decolonial perspective and others.

Digital Timespace Friction / The Tempo-spatial Conflicts of Platform Mediation

Repenning, Alica 22 March 2024 (has links)
Current digital and labor geography debates reveal that daily spaces represent a web of interconnected online and offline spaces. This implies that not only has the web become platformized, but work practices and daily tempo-spatial relations have also been structured by the spaces of digital platforms and their models of value capture. Therefore, digital platforms are not merely asset-light matchmakers operating in distant digital cyberspace. They are deeply embedded in the fabric of daily life. The dissertation aims to uncover the platform mediation of time and space and its frictions. The concept of platform-mediated timespace suggests that platform interfaces, human practices, and socio-material relations intricately and seamlessly shape the configuration of space and the perception of time. Platform-mediated time and space are negotiated and contested between platform capitalism and platform labor. This contested production of digitally mediated timespace is defined as timespace friction. Methodologically, a digital ethnography is employed to investigate the interplay between platform interfaces, user practices, and experiences in a specific case of platform mediation. The study analyzes independent fashion entrepreneurs in Berlin who work between offline spaces and the digital platform Instagram. Against this backdrop, the dissertation urges the field of digital geography to move beyond notions of augmented digital space. Instead, in combination with a labor geography perspective, it suggests gaining more critical insights into the daily work, negotiations, and power relations underlying the creation of platform-mediated timespace in digital capitalism. Finally, the dissertation advocates for the application of mediated methods in researching mediated timespaces. It demonstrates how a detailed, case-specific digital ethnography can provide insights into the production of digitally mediated spacetime and its struggles.

Metodval för att stötta elever med språkångest : En jämförelse mellan lärares metodval i årskurs 3 och 4 / Methods for supporting pupils with language anxiety

Jones, Micaela, Sundström, Moa January 2024 (has links)
In today’s society, well-developed communication skills within the English language are important, placing a responsibility on second language teachers to provide pupils with the ora lcommunications skills they need. Language anxiety is a well-known phenomenon that mainly manifests itself on oral activities in a learning context. This phenomenon can be described as a complexity of self-perceptions, emotions and behaviors that are linked to language learning in the classroom. Previous research into the phenomenon has highlighted the impotence of the teacher’s role and identified several factors that can trigger language anxiety. The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers in grades 3 and 4 plan their teaching to reduce language anxiety during oral activities and to analyze the differences and similarities in the method choices of teaches in these grades. To achieve this aim, semi-structured interviews were used as the date collection instrument with teachers who have experience teaching English in grades 3 and 4. The results of this study show that teachers use several different methods to reduce language anxiety in pupils. Through the interviews, it could be established that there are both similarities and differences in the methods choices of the teachers how teach grades 3 and 4. Despite this result, no marked differences in the methods choice for the two grades could be identified.

”Ungdomskriminell för en jacka” : En kvalitativ studie av professionellas uppfattningar om ungdomskriminalitetens riskfaktorer / “Youth criminal for a jacket” : A qualitative study on professionals' perceptions of risk factors in juvenile delinquency

Ruppel, Josefine, Wladysiuk-Repelewicz, Sebastian January 2024 (has links)
Young people all over the country find themselves year after year in a dangerous and destructive spiral of violence characterized by norm-breaking behaviors. Understanding the phenomenon of youth crime and the path leading to it is crucial to break this destructive spiral of violence. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore, through the perspectives of professionals, common factors contributing to the involvement of children and young people in youth crime. The study employed a qualitative approach, conducting ten semi-structured interviews. All interviews were conducted with professional individuals actively working with children and young people on behalf of social services. Nine of the study's interviews were conducted with one respondent per interview, while one interview was conducted with two respondents. The study's results revealed the perspectives of the professionals on the issue. They highlighted the importance of the environment, where a young person's tendency towards conformity and the risks of negative exposure served as strong risk factors. The next identified risk factor was social norms, where the individual's group membership and social networks emerged as strong risk factors. The final risk factor identified in the study was identity, where a lack of well-being in a young person, neurodevelopmental disorders, and a young person's personal circumstances emerged as significant risk factors. All risk factors were found to be extensive based on the responses in the study.

Al-Meliya, Atyaf, Messo, Lilian January 2024 (has links)
