The present work aims to investigate the influence of Sophists’ philosophical and educational principles, especially Protagoras, Gorgias and Hippias, in the educational philosophy of John Dewey. Concomitantly, we aim to analyze the Sophistical rhetoric as an instrument of formation of the democratic citizen. For reaching our goals we use a methodology of rhetorical analysis developed by Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechst-Tyteca based on the Topics of Aristotle. Through rhetorical analysis, we can identify and analyze what we call discursive frameworks, which are certain typical forms of elaboration and solution of philosophical problems expressed in peculiar argumentative forms; the localization of discursive frameworks allows us to reflect on a function of these typical forms of argument in the constitution of educational proposals. The first chapter explains the central question that rules the whole structure of work, presenting an analogy of education with agriculture, which origin is attribute to the Sophists by Jaeger. The second chapter deals with general concepts of the Sophistical Movement and Pragmatism in order to show to the reader the main characteristics of these philosophical approaches. The third chapter examines a division of reality between two realms, one low and another high; this division initiated in philosophical discussions in Classical Greece and it was characterized by opposition between physis (a condition of the order independent of human action) and nómos (the convention related to human decision). The fourth chapter is a result of the reflections elaborated in the previous chapters, and it examines the power and importance of the word/communication in the life of man and of the democratic society for the formation of the consensuses that govern the relations between men and the world which they are inserted. The arguments of the Sophists and Dewey evidence that the development of man and human intelligence through the experimental method is possible just when men integrated themselves in group activities. By becoming involved in the discussions about the homonoia, the consensus, which regulates and directs the life of society, with the resources of the power of lógos, men become active participants in the search for the common good, thus creating a society and at the same time, creating themselves as citizens. Mediated by democratic methods of persuasion, reasoning, communication, deliberation and debate, participation enables the broadest, richest, emancipatory and shared experiences. However, the scope and concretization of this participation is possible if individuals have a rhetorical education which enables them to examine diverse opinions and make a judgment about which of all is the better answer to solve the problem, and, how to be creative and have insight to create new perspectives for action / 2013/04791-2

This is how a real man should be” : A rhetorical analysis of how masculinity is produced in podcasts

Wahlström, Lisa, Allert, Terese January 2012 (has links)
This study examines how masculinity is portrayed in podcasts. Our original material consisted of four episodes of C/o Hannah & Amanda and four episodes of Filip & Fredrik's podcast. We analyzed the programs both individually and in comparison to each other. Using a rhetorical analysis, we found that the perception of men in the podcasts conforms to societal norms. The theoretical basis underlying our analysis can be expected to strengthen our findings and made us also realize that the image of masculinity is constantly evolving.

Välsignad förbannelse : En retorisk analys av bibliskt material i Black Metallyrik

Jonsäll, Hans January 2015 (has links)
This bachelor thesis offers a rhetorical analysis of the album Maranatha by Swedish Black Metal artist Funeral Mist. Its main focus is on the intertextuality between the song "Blessed Curse" and the biblical book Deuteronomy, especially Deut 28 from which it has sampled a large portion of text. In the analysis I uncover the similarities and differences between the two texts in order to explain how the biblical fragments constitute new meanings when rearranged and taken out of their original context. The analysis concludes with relating the material to its new context i.e. the album Maranatha and the Black Metal scene by explaining other intertexts and references to the Bible and discussing which genre is best suited to describe the album as a whole. The results of the study show that the biblical quotations in the lyrics convey radically different messages and meanings compared to their original content in Deut 28. This in turn acknowledge how dependent linguistic symbols are on their context. I finish off my thesis with a few reflections on the moral and ethical implications of this use of biblical material concerning the anti-christian agenda supported by members of the Black Metal scene and specifically how Daniel Rostén of Funeral Mist view his own work and agenda.

Blanc, Nicolas 08 December 2014 (has links)
This research intends on proving how constitutionalism and exclusion collide one against the other through acritique of the french gaze on a supposedly canadian model of pluralism. The negative comparison’s silencesbetween France and Canada gave birth to this question of how one is being excluded and othered based on theidentity of constitutional law. This critique, that focuses on identities, is shifting those three dialectics supportingthe aforementioned negative comparison : positivism v. pluralism, universalism v. differentialism, republicanismv. liberal pluralism. France and Canada share the issue of how legal reality is oriented toward specific identities. This research, then, is a critique of constitutionalism identities. Exclusion is defined as the gap between theorientation of law’s identities and the bodily reality of its subjects. The analytical tool developed here to tackleexclusion in law has three steps : shedding light on the orientations of constitutionalism, its identity structure, and its constitutional Others. This research purports on turning scholars’ critical gaze towards thisphenomenology of constitutional exclusion, its « constitutive outside, » by deciphering a typology ofconstitutional Others. This will be so through the collisions of freedom of religion and sexual orientation.Constitutionalism is per se oriented towards the ascendency of whiteness, patriarcalism and heteronormativity.
