The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the collaboration between school librarians and teachers in primary school, in order to illustrate how the two professions can work together, how they see their own roles and how they look at the other professionals´ roles. We also discuss earlier studies in LIS concerning collaboration between teachers and librarians. The method of investigation is qualitative interviews with practicing school librarians and teachers, we interviewed three school librarians and three teachers from three different schools in the same county.  As a basis of the discussion and analysis Andrew Abbott's theory of professions is used. The thesis shows that collaboration differs between the schools. The difference in itself depends on the schools principal views of the school library. The professions need to develop their understanding for each other´s roles and competences in order to develop the best possible collaboration.

Denna kandidatuppsats består av en kvalitativ studie riktad mot barn i bokslukaråldern. Studien syftar på att undersöka barns attityd till läsning och biblioteket och vad som i barns liv kan konkurrera med deras rekreationella läsning. Studien genomfördes med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer tillsammans med elever i årskurs 5 vid en skola med tillgång till skolbibliotek och skolbibliotekarie. Studiens resultat visar på att samtliga av de tillfrågade eleverna anser att biblioteket är en viktig inrättning i samhället för att alla ska ha tillgång till en lugn plats att öva sin läsning. Resultatet tyder även på att barn stimuleras till läsning med hjälp av en engagerande bibliotekarie i deras närhet och att det påverkar barnen starkt om de har någon läsande förebild i sin vardag eller inte. Studiens resultat ger även en bild av att rekreationell läsning är en aktivitet som stimulerar på ett sätt som andra rekreationella aktiviteter inte gör och därför inte går att säga att barn kommer att sluta läsa i och med den teknologiska utvecklingen, utan att den rekreationella läsningen istället tar sig en annan form.

The self-image of the school librarian: and how it affects the perceived status in a school environment. This paper examines the role of the school librarian and how they perceive themselves and how they think other actors in the school environment perceive them. The purpose of this study is to highlight how the school librarian’s professional identity and the teachers understanding of it correlates to form the impact on the school librarian position. Semistructured interviews were conducted with five school librarians. The theoretical framework used to analyze the result was Montiel-Overall’s TLC theory, Centerwall’s performativity theory derived from Judith Butler’s feminist theory on performativity, and Örom’s theory on librarian identities. In conclusion, the results show that all of the interviewed acknowledged that they’re all in a position of power to define their own role, and that at the same time the teachers do not have enough information to know what that role is supposed to be. This means that the school librarians liken themselves to other school employees in more practical roles instead of an educational one.

During 2021 the Swedish government released a public inquiry with the purpose of strengthening the school library, to achieve this one of the propositions was to implement the concept media and information literacy into the curriculum. Today it's stated that a school librarian shall work towards strengthening the student’s digital literacy, this is the reason why this concept is used in this thesis. The aim of this study is to gain new knowledge regarding school librarians understanding of the concept digital literacy, how they describe their prerequisites and how they legitimize their work based on their profession. The data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with five high school librarians. The data was then analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The theoretical framework used in this study was profession theory and new institutional theory. The outcome of the interviews showed that a high school librarian prefers the use of media and information literacy comparative to digital literacy because it describes their qualification more clearly. The conclusion reached was that the governing documents released by the state gives the high school librarian legitimacy and prerequisite in their educational work, this is the reason why interpretations of concepts become significant for their profession.

Denna systematiska litteraturstudie presenterar, diskuterar och analyserar tidigare forskning om skolbibliotekets påverkan på elevers studieresultat och läsutveckling. Syftet med studien är att undersöka skolbibliotek och skolbibliotekariens arbete och den eventuella påverkan de har på elevers studieresultat och läsutveckling. Frågeställningarna fokuserar på samarbete mellan bibliotekarier och lärare, men även på betydelsen av skolbiblioteket som plats. Materialet som har använts är tio publikationer varav sju är forskningsöversikter och tre är empiriska studier. Publikationerna söktes fram via databaser och genom manuell läsning av litteraturlistor. Urvalet gjordes ut ifrån att materialet skulle vara publicerat tidigast 1990, skulle vara inriktat på skolbibliotek inom grundskolan och fokusera på bibliotekariens roll för elevernas studieresultat och läsutveckling samt samarbete med lärare. Materialet kategoriserades sedan in i ett sökschema. I resultatet framgår det att bibliotekariens roll är viktig i undervisningen och bidrar till elevers studieresultat. Majoriteten av forskningen säger att samarbete mellan bibliotekarie och lärare är en vital grund för att främja elevernas studieresultat. Hur skolbibliotekarier bidrar till elevers studieresultat framkom dock inte lika tydligt i de valda publikationerna.

Denna uppsats handlar om skolbibliotek samt skolbibliotekariers roll och litteraturfrämjande arbete. Skyltning av böcker i skolbibliotek undersöks också då denna anses vara nära sammankopplad med litteraturfrämjande verksamhet. Detta undersöks utifrån frågeställningarna: Vilka syften har skolbiblioteken och dess litteraturfrämjande arbete? Vad ingår i skolbibliotekariens arbete? På vilka olika sätt exponeras böcker i skolbibliotek? Vilka syften finns med särskild exponering av vissa utvalda böcker? De som intervjuats har varit skolbibliotekarier eller personer som tidigare varit skolbibliotekarier. Observationerna har gjorts på olika typer av skolbibliotek. Skolbibliotekens huvudsakliga syfte har framkommit vara det läsfrämjande uppdraget där bland annat särskild exponering av olika typer av litteratur ingår. Många av de intervjuade kopplar även detta till att eleverna ges förutsättningar till att bli en del av samhället, där demokrati och yttrandefrihet är nära sammankopplat med individers läsförmåga. Skolbibliotekariens uppdrag består av många olika komponenter och mycket är upp till individen bakom titeln. Särskild exponering används inom majoriteten av skolbiblioteken och alla intervjuade nämner detta som ett viktigt och effektivt sätt att presentera böcker. Syftet med denna typ av skyltning är att främja elevernas intresse av böcker. Till detta hör även att rekommendera olika typer av litteratur, där främst nyheter och böcker personalen vill rekommendera blir placerad. In the political climate of 2019 in Sweden, school librarians became a controversial topic. The discussion regarded the absence of fully qualified librarians with a bachelor degree in Library- and Information Science in school libraries. The purpose of the study is to identify the qualifications and professions of those who dominates the workplace and organization today; school librarians lacking a bachelor degree in Library- and Information Science.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explore the reasons fifteen-year-old students give for not using their school library. One of the objectives of this study is to contribute to increasing the relevance of school libraries for as many students as possible by investigating what non-users think of their school library. The questions posed are: Why do some students not visit their school library? What are the non-users’ perceptions of their school library? What value do the non-users’ attach to their school library? The theoretical framework used to analyze the results is the theory on economies of worth developed by Boltanski and Thévenot (2006). The empirical material consists of transcripts from group interviews at four different schools. The results of the thesis show that students have a wide range of reasons for not visiting the school library. Some of the students didn’t particularly enjoy reading and therefore didn’t feel that the library was a place for them. Other reasons given were that their school library was closed most of the time, was uninviting, didn’t have a great selection of books or that the students forgot that it existed. In conclusion, in order for the school library to be relevant to more students, clearer communication about what the library has to offer to students and school staff alike is needed. The school library needs to be reevaluated and adapted in order to include all students.

This bachelor's thesis is an investigation of how four principals at communal upper secondary schools in Gothenburg implements the school librarian in the school activities and how they perceive the school librarian as a pedagogical resource. Since 2018 it is specified in the curriculum (Lgy11) that the principal is responsible for the usage of the library. The principal is to make sure that teachers and students have the opportunity to work with the school library in an educative way. However, none of the laws or curriculums state that the school library needs to be staffed with a qualified librarian. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the principals view the profession of the school librarian, how the principals view the school librarian as a pedagogical resource and how they ensure the collaboration between school librarian and teacher. To gather the empirical material for this study I used qualitative semistructured interviews and to analyze the results I have used Loertschers taxonomy for school leaders. The results of the interviews show that the principals have a very positive attitude towards the school librarian and are unanimously convinced of their value as a pedagogical resource. However, only one of them purposefully enables collaboration between librarians and teachers as well as engaging them in school activities. Obstacles mentioned are lack of time, strict schedule and that the librarians do not promote themselves enough at the schools.

Genom en kvalitativ studie via semistrukturerade intervjuer med rektorer och observationer av skolbibliotek har vi jämfört två skolors skolbibliotek i Mellansverige. Genom att kategorisera och tolka kunde vi analysera resultatet. Det som skilde sig från respektive skola var synen på skollagens utformning gällande skolbibliotek då en rektor ansåg att den var tillräcklig och den andra kunde se fördelar med ett förtydligande av skollagen. En annan aspekt var organisation och ansvar där en rektor hade mer översikt och var mer involverad i skolbibliotekets verksamhet än den andra rektorn. Den tredje aspekten var den pedagogiska verksamheten hos skolbiblioteket. Där visade en skola större ambitioner och tydliga visioner för framtiden med fler pedagogiska aktiviteter utanför skolbibliotekets väggar. Den andra skolan visade en mer traditionell syn på skolbibliotek som en lokal man endast hade högläsning i och lånade böcker från.
