Physical activity from adolescence to adulthood and health-related fitness at age 31:cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the Northern Finland birth cohort of 1966

Tammelin, T. (Tuija) 13 December 2003 (has links)
Abstract Regular physical activity, a high level of cardiorespiratory fitness and the maintenance of normal weight are strongly associated with several positive health outcomes across the lifespan. The aim of this study was to evaluate how physical activity and social status in adolescence are associated with physical activity in adulthood, and how a change in the level of physical activity from adolescence to adulthood is associated with overall and abdominal obesity in adulthood. This study also evaluated the relationship between occupational physical activity and physical fitness and produced reference values of cardiorespiratory fitness for males and females aged 31 years. The study population consisted of the Northern Finland birth cohort of 1966 (N = 12,058). Data on physical activity and social situation at 14 and 31 years were collected by postal inquiries in 1980 and in 1997–1998, respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness and obesity were measured at medical examination at age 31. Participation in sports twice a week or more after school hours, being a member in a sports club and a high grade in school sports at age 14 were associated with a high level of physical activity at age 31. Adolescent participation in rather intensive endurance sports, and some sports that require or encourage diversified sports skills appeared to be the most beneficial with respect to the enhancement of adult physical activity. Low social class and poor school achievements were associated with physical inactivity at age 14. Poor school achievements at age 14 were also associated with physical inactivity at age 31. Becoming inactive during the transition from adolescence to adulthood was associated with overall obesity in both genders and abdominal obesity in females at 31 years. A linear dose-response relationship was observed between the frequency of participation in brisk exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness. The mean peak oxygen uptake was 43 ml·kg-1·min-1 in males and 34 ml·kg-1·min-1 in females. Very low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with a combination of infrequent participation in brisk exercise and increased body mass index. High level of occupational physical activity was associated with a high level of physical fitness, but low level of leisure-time physical activity at age 31. The enhancement of regular participation in physical activity across the lifespan is an important challenge for public health promotion. The present results that define the predictors and correlates of physical activity can be used to identify the target groups for interventions to enhance continuous participation in physical activities. New information on physical fitness of young adults is useful in physical activity counseling when fitness test results are interpreted and the need for health-enhancing or fitness-improving physical activity is evaluated. Liikunta-aktiivisuuden tukeminen elämänkulun eri vaiheissa on tärkeä haaste terveyden edistämisessä. Tämän tutkimuksen tuloksia liikkumattomuuteen liittyvistä nuoruusiän ja aikuisiän tekijöistä voidaan hyödyntää, kun määritellään kohderyhmiä interventioihin elinikäisen liikunnan edistämiseksi. Tuloksia nuorten aikuisten fyysiseen kuntoon liittyvistä tekijöistä voidaan hyödyntää käytännön liikuntaneuvonnassa, kun tulkitaan kuntotestien tuloksia ja määritellään tarvetta terveyttä edistävän ja fyysistä kuntoa kohottavan liikunnan lisäämiseksi.

The emergence of class concept formation in preschool children

Fryer, Margo 11 1900 (has links)
The ability to classify complex visual forms was studied in three, four, and five year old children. Each subject performed two tasks based on two classes of computer-generated stimuli. The oddity task required the identification of the odd form in a set of three eight-sided polygons. The sequential task required the assignment of each sequentially presented single polygon to one of two classes. No feedback was given. The results revealed a marked developmental change in classification ability occurring between about 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 years of age. The oddity task appeared to be a more sensitive test of class concept formation. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

Os que relataram escovar os dentes três vezes ao dia apresentaram CPO-D, de 0,96; duas vezes, 2,23; uma vez, 4,67 e nenhuma vez 5,35 / Abstract: The aim of this study was to realize and epidemiologic survey in São Paulo ¿ SP, Brazil, in 137 street young of both sexus, to evoluate the conditions of oral health, the oral inspections, were done following who¿s criterion. Soares, Nara Michelle Moura 24 February 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa e à Inovação Tecnológica do Estado de Sergipe - FAPITEC/SE / Objective: To estimate the prevalence of risk behaviors to health and its association with sociodemographic characteristics among adolescents in Aracaju and the metropolitan area, Sergipe, Brazil to the investigation and present evidence regarding the existence of intervention programs in physical activity for adolescents through of a systematic review. Methods: For the survey research, the sample consisted of 2207 adolescents (13 to 18 years) enrolled in public schools of the municipalities that make up the observed region. The survey information was held electing the following behaviors: "low levels of physical activity" and "watching time TV/day", through the PAQ-C, "drinking", "consumption of more than five doses of alcohol on a single occasion", "involvement in fights", "cigarette smoking", "bear arms" and "marijuana use", identified by YRBS instrument and "economic class" accessed for ABEP. For the systematic review, surveys were conducted in PubMed, SportDiscus, Lilacs and SciELO from keywords to population identification, intervention and outcome, with the DeCS and MeSH terms in English, Portuguese and Spanish. They included observational studies with minimal intervention six months, minimum sample size of 100 teenagers, written in any language and have reached the score STROBE ≥ 70%. Results: The highest prevalence was found for "low levels of physical activity" (88.1%), followed by "watch more than two hours of TV a day" (66.2%) and "alcoholic beverages" (38.0%). There are different patterns of risk behaviors sexes. female is associated with "low levels of physical activity" and "more than two hours watching TV." Male gender was associated with "weapons of transport", "involvement in fights" and "marijuana use". The largest age group of 16 years was associated with the "cigarette smoking", "drinking", "consuming more than five drinks of alcohol during" and "marijuana use." The highest socioeconomic status was associated with "weapons of transport", "involvement in fights", "drinking" and "more than five doses of alcohol on the occasion". In the systematic review, only seven studies met all inclusion criteria. Five studies presented different approaches to measure the physical activity intervention using the school environment only for sample recruitment, with strategies favorable to physical activity levels, and effective in promoting an active lifestyle outside of school. Conclusion: In the survey study, the most prevalent variables were: low levels of physical activity, more than two hours watching TV and drinking. The behaviors were less prevalent marijuana use, transport of weapons, cigarette smoking and involvement in fights. Associations were observed in the studied population with three risk groups that should be highlighted: male, from 17 years and with high socioeconomic status. A Systematic Review found that, among the analyzed studies, most presented experimental study design, with follow-up up to one year, with interventions that linked physical activity to diet/nutrition, with different implementation strategy and implemented in extracurricular environments, able to promote change in health risk behavior in adolescents.

A Marxist Reading Of Things Fall Apart In The Esl Classrom : Exploring Colonial Socio-economic Exploitation in the Nigerian Context

Nkalubo, Arthur E. January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore how a critical reading of the novel Things Fall Apart (1958) can provide valuable perspective for educators and students when examining socio-economic issues in  a colonial context in the ESL classroom. The main issues being analysed are how the novel reveals and explores socio-economic forms of exploitation under colonialism, and how a critical reading of the novel can be used in teaching to inform and persuade learners about social injustices. To show this, the essay examines the novel from a marxist perspective, and more specifically by drawing on the concept of primitive accumulation to understand and explain the changes brought about by the introduction of colonial rule. The changes in this context include the Igbo community's relation to land, its socio-economic and cultural aspects as well as the introduction of trade. The discussion and analysis of the novel centre on social injustices due to land expropriation, breakdown of traditional values and customs, and economic changes brought about by the arrival of Europeans in the context of colonialism. Expanding on this, the essay also reflects on the pedagogical implications of its arguments by showing how a critical reading of Things Fall Apart might provide an opportunity for teachers to underline issues of social injustice, material, and economic forms of exploitation under colonialism and beyond. This literary analysis also discusses and reflects on the practical challenges and possibilities of teaching such issues in the ESL classroom by using the concept of critical literacy.

Social constructions of whiteness and africaness through tourist mobility and migrations to Senegal

Quashie, Hélène 17 September 2018 (has links)
Based on six fieldworks conducted in several regions of Senegal (Petite Côte, Saloum, Saint-Louis, Oriental Senegal and Dakar), this thesis explores the social mechanisms which articulate class and race issues in different contexts of mobility and migration from Europe and North America. The trajectories, practices and ways of socializing investigated are related to seaside and cultural tourism, individual entrepreneurship in post-tourist contexts, study abroad programs and professional flows of voluntary service and expatriation. These social and globalized settings, often addressed in distinct fields of research, underlie a cross analysis of the constructions of two ethnicity – whiteness and africaness – considered as emic and etic notions. The social identities they produce respond to one another and reveal recurring patterns in social hierarchy and racial confrontation throughout individual interactions and collective dynamics. They also echo logics of social stratification and selection within the Senegalese society, which are combined with culturalist and ethnic representations, beyond color markers. The contexts of mobility and migration investigated are embedded into specific socio-historical backgrounds, transnational asymmetry of class and process of identification based on religion, phenotype and gender. They all reflect the heuristic value of whiteness and its production of identity in social, racialized and ethnicized categorization, regarding multiple meanings of africaness. Analyzing these mechanisms of social distinction in an African society such as Senegal leads to face postcolonial thinking with the ambiguities of social spheres. It also questions the positionality of researchers through ethnography and in the production of knowledge about Africa.

Berentsen, Alva, Christensson, Caroline January 2020 (has links)
The human resources field has changed and the responsibility for employability has been transferred to the individual himself. In this study, we have been interested in the extent to which individuals with a HR-degree from Örebro University have an employment in the field of competence after graduation and if we could identify what have affected their employment. Previous research in the field of employment gives us various factors that have been reported to affect an individual's opportunity for employment. In our study, we have verified whether these factors remain for the HR-students with a degree from Örebro University or if they disappear. Through a survey, we found that two-thirds of the respondents had employment in the area of expertise. We also detected that part-time job in the area of expertise and gender had a positive impact on employment within the area of expertise. The remaining factors had a negative impact.

Péndola Vargas, María Isabel 26 January 2021 (has links)
The main objective of this research work is to analyze how violence is constructed in director Park Chan Wook's cinema as a critique of contemporary South Korean society. To achieve this objective, in the first place, the cinematographic treatment of violence will be identified in the South Korean director's revenge trilogy, which is made up of: Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003) and Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005). Second, the forms of violence in these films will be recognized in relation to the consequences of the capitalist system of South Korean society. The introduction presents the study whose general objective is to present the context in which the South Korean director and the revenge trilogy emerge. In the theoretical framework, it is intended to make a journey through the ways in which fiction cinema has represented violence throughout history, this framework will allow me to contextualize Park Chan Wook's proposal within the evolution of the South Korean film industry. Likewise, the concept of violence in general and how it is represented in cinema will be deepened; as well as the relationship between violence and capitalism. In the analysis chapter, sequences from each film will be used divided into three criteria in relation to the presence of violence: revelation, action and conclusion. Afterwards, an audiovisual analysis of each sequence linked to the socio-historical context of South Korea and the consequences of contemporary capitalism facing this society will be offered. Finally, in the conclusions there will be a reflection on how Park Chan Wook manages to create an aesthetic of the particular violence of a capitalist world and shapes it through audiovisual resources to create a critique of his own society. / Tesis
