The purpose of this essay is to show the narrator’s use of the male and the queer gaze in three short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: “Berenice: A Tale” (1835), “The Man that was Used Up: A Tale of the Late Bugaboo and Kickapoo Campaign” (1839) and ”The Man of the Crowd” (1845). Through close reading of the stories, I show how the different gazes work, how they are used in the stories and what they lead to. I relate how the visual perspectives function to how narrative development in the stories depend on the gaze, suggesting that whereas the male gaze in the stories by Poe aids in creating violence and misogyny; the queer gaze on the other hand helps in creating alternative worlds, governed by curiosity, empathy and possibility. / Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att lyfta fram berättarens användning av the male och the queer gaze i tre noveller av Edgar Allan Poe: ”Berenice” (1835), ”Den förbrukade mannen” (1839) och ”Mannen i mängden” (1845). Med hjälp av närläsning belyser jag hur berättelsens utveckling och narrativ påverkas av perspektiven och dessa skilda sätt att se. Jag föreslår att medan the male gaze hos Poe bidrar till att skapa mörka och destruktiva teman, där våld och misogyni är framträdande element, the queer gaze finns konstant närvarande, skapande alternativa sätt att existera i en värld präglad av nyfikenhet, empati och möjlighet.

Homoerotisk sensibilitet : Byggandet av homosexuell identitet genom konsthistorien / Homoerotic Sensibility : The Construction of Homosexual Identity Throughout the History of Art

The question of homoerotic sensibility is, in the purpose of this thesis, a matter of visual language connected to the portrayal of male bodies. By identifying this sensibility throughout the western art canon the essay seeks to understand its origins, development and function in relation to expressions of power. With the introduction of theorists such as Alois Riegl, Laura Mulvey, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Raewyn Connell, the aim is to deconstruct homosexual masculinity. Adapting formal analysis and parts of visual semiotics, the focus lies on the visual expression of power through the homoerotic gaze, and asks what consequences it has in forming homosexual identity. Greek antiquity is home not only to the ideals that foster western art history, but is also where we find early examples of same-sex affection being portrayed in the arts. Hence classical antiquity is so important for the homoerotic: whenever the classical language of style is popular throughout history, we are sure to find homoerotic sensibility. For reasons mentioned, the main periods analyzed are the Italian Renaissance, the French Neoclassicism and then, naturally the late 20th century onwards as this is the period of gay liberation and modern homosexual identity.  By identifying classical acceptance of homosexual relations only in the form of a clear social hierarchy, we soon discover how homosexuality has appropriated the idea of binary difference within its masculinity throughout history. Accepting relationships only between erastes and eromenos, or man and ephebe, homosexuality is forced to exist only on the terms of difference of power. With classical ideals, these tendencies are recurring in the visual representation of male homosexuality, and becomes a big part of the liberation and forming of a modern identity in the late twentieth century. As a result of objectification of the male body, in combination with idealized and sexualized power, modern gay culture has in many ways embraced a destructive culture shaped by misogynist ideas of hegemonic culture, where sexual violence exists, but is not spoken of.

La représentation de la violence faite aux femmes dans 'Un dimanche à la piscine à Kigali' de Gil Courtemanche et 'Je m’appelle Bosnia' de Madeleine Gagnon

La violence faite aux femmes est une réalité encore très présente, surtout dans les sociétés patriarcales, même après des décennies de lutte féministe. C’est aussi un thème privilégié en littérature. La présente thèse propose justement une analyse de ce thème à travers deux romans assez récents qui mettent tous deux de l’avant des aspects particuliers de la question : Un dimanche à la piscine à Kigali de Gil Courtemanche et Je m’appelle Bosnia de Madeleine Gagnon. Nous tenterons de cerner les différentes formes de violences à l’œuvre dans les deux narrations : la violence faite aux filles, celle faite aux femmes, et enfin la violence spécifique qu’engendrent les conflits armés avec le viol comme arme de guerre. Nous proposerons une analyse intersectionnelle de ces formes de violences afin de mesurer les représentations et les répercussions des notions de classe et de race eu égard aux toiles de fond différentes des deux romans : le génocide chez Courtemanche, le nettoyage ethnique chez Gagnon. Nous aborderons aussi les narrations sous l’angle de l’agentivité. Dans des sociétés fondamentalement patriarcales, quel pouvoir peuvent espérer avoir les personnages féminins sur leur destin personnel et collectif? Y a-t-il pour ces femmes fictives des stratégies possibles pour atteindre une liberté d’action, si mince soit-elle?
