The content of the corpus encompasses profiles and avatars of 6 to 12-year-old users in simulation environments, specifically Penguin Club, Dragon City and CityVille. The research objective is to understand the intrinsic relationship between subjectivity and media visibility, considering the transformations of the child s identity and imagination in face of the hyper-spectacle of the dissolution of the individual in social networks. The main problem translates into two questions: (a) how to see the development of the child s self in its avatars, with its multiple identities in relationship platforms; and (b) how the child s imaginary is articulated in this context. Accordingly, the search process is guided by the following hypotheses: (a) the ongoing construction of profiles requires various identities, resignifying the very self of the child; (b) the projection of its real self in the network transforms its constitution into verbal/imagistic production, which dereferences its identity; and (c) this conjuncture leads to a reconfiguration of the child s imaginary. The methodology included a literature review and observation of behavior in virtual environments according to netnography, based on which, by means of noninvasive admission to the cited platforms, an exploratory analysis of profiles and avatars was performed. The theoretical framework of reference was based on theoretical postmodernism (ANDERSON; BAUDRILLARD; HARVEY; LYOTARD), on the concepts of cyberculture (LEMOS; TRIVINHO), and on reflections about the formation of identity (BAUMAN; GIDDENS; HALL; LIPOVETSKY; CHARLES), of childhood and of the imaginary (CASTORIADIS; FELINTO; TRIVINHO) / A pesquisa tem como objeto as manifestações subjetivas e as alterações de identidade e do imaginário de crianças que acessam plataformas ciberculturais de comunicação e relacionamento.

Bello, Cíntia Dal 22 June 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:18:03Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Cintia Dal Bello.pdf: 2102446 bytes, checksum: d37a54dc5783ceccb4d37e83be38d1f4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-06-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This Master s Dissertation discusses the relation between cyberculture and subjectivity. Its main study objective is the identity projected in the Orkut profile, a virtual platform that enables the user to publicize his self in a social/community network of friends. The practice of building profiles that confer singularities and visibility to the subjectivities acting in cyberspace, establishing boundaries for who I am , is marked by the problem of articulation between representation and simulation, in the permeable interface between the real, the virtual and the hyper-real, and also involves concepts in crisis such as identity and subject. Starting from the discovery that cyberspace comprises new processes of subjectivation by engendering the virtualization and glocalization of existence, and that social networks, particularly Orkut, enable new forms of experimenting the dimensions of being and of relating to others, this study, insofar as it concerns the aforementioned problem, established the following questions: (1) Does the profile of an Orkut user correspond to his identity?, and (2) What are the implications of the congruence between profile, identity and subject in cyberculture? These questions led to the formulation of three hypotheses: (1) Orkut constitutes and interesting discursive space for the enunciation and circumscription of the self in informational flows; (2) in cyberspace, identities/profiles hold a status equivalent to the user s own body as a dynamic instrument of individuation; and (3) the daily experience in signic bodies leads to the dissolution of the concrete spaces of living and promotes the strategies of cybercultural management of existence, producing a direct impact on the physical and biological reality of the body and the territory. With the purpose of observing, describing and analyzing the strategies of construction and projection of identity in virtuality, of reflecting upon the congruence or superposition between identity, subject, and profile in the processes of hyper-spectacularization of the self, and of presenting the resulting cyberspatial management correlated to the invisible phenomenon of signic indexation of content identities, the terms of the commissioning and use of the free services rendered by Orkut, as well as pages for the registration, construction, maintenance and presentation of profiles and communities, were selected as the corpus of this work. The plan underpinning this research into post-modernism, into the semiotics of culture, into sociodromology and into cultural states, among other compatible theories, provided the theoretical and epistemiological references necessary for the analysis of the object (identity/profile), for checking the hypotheses, and for solving the research problem. The set of methodological strategies adopted during the process of this work also incorporated the netnographic method to guide the exploratory survey in the virtual environment, the collection and interpretation of data, the participatory observation and the realization of interviews. With these characteristics, which insert this Master s Dissertation, in an interdisciplinary manner, into the area of Communication, the aim is to contribute toward the development of studies on cyberculture in Brazil / A presente Dissertação de Mestrado aborda a relação entre cibercultura e subjetividade.

Hermida, Denis Domingues 10 August 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T20:21:05Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Denis Domingues Hermida.pdf: 8446847 bytes, checksum: 8056c52cc4f1b810717f8365e1494a66 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-08-10 / Technologies based on mobile devices, telematics wireless networks and sensors have given rise to changes in the regime of visibility which is the way people see and are seen in society. At present the regime of visibility is based not only on the physical space or on the limits of human vision, but also on cyber space, the so-called enlarged space . The concept of enlarged space includes representations in the form of images, sounds and even tactile sensations relating to a reality that may be physically far from the individual. Despite the physical distance, the enlarged space allows individuals not only to have access to this reality but also to interact with it. The regime of visibility is a value appreciated by society in factual realities and therefore is part of the juridical experience and it should, in the light of 'ethicity', govern normatized facts when the legal norm is construed. Changes in the regime of visibility in a society may give rise to a change in the norm, which is to be understood as a change in the content of a norm despite the fact that the statute (the legal text) may remain unchanged. This is so especially for those legal rules which constitutive elements are based on visibility. Automatic Vehicle Location systems are an assembly of technologies and pieces of equipment which allow the position of a vehicle to be known. These systems also allow related operations to take place such as transmission of information available on board, and at their current stage, these systems also allow their users to have access to reliable and highly accurate information in real time. The systems managers therefore have access to an enlarged space of the work environment which goes well beyond the limited physical space of the company s headquarters. This new space is limitless and managers are able to monitor the vehicle and the driver as they travel, and to monitor the driver s behavior during work activities outside the headquarters. The Automatic Vehicle Location systems available in the Brazilian market allow employers to control the work hours, compliance with orders and the quality of service of driver employees who work on the road. It is no longer justifiable to rule out the right to overtime pay of this type of employees based on Item I of Article 62 of CLT, Consolidation of Labor Laws. The change in the regime of visibility has given rise to a change in the legal norm construed based on Item I of Article 62 of CLT, Consolidation of Labor Laws / As tecnologias fundadas em dispositivos móveis, redes telemáticas sem fio e sensores geraram mudança no regime de visibilidade, que é a forma como os indivíduos vêem e são vistos na sociedade.

Tradução juramentada e as modalidades de tradução: o caso dos históricos escolares / Sworn translation and translation modalities: the case of school transcripts

Goedert, Alessandra Otero 14 October 2015 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the topic of sworn translation, which has been increasingly researched in the field of Translation Studies by virtue of its relevant presence, whether in the academic or corporate areas. Sworn translation, which differs from other kinds of translations particularly for the power vested by the full faith and credit, having an effect on the attitude and view adopted by Brazilian Sworn Translators and Commercial Interpreters, led us to the hypothesis that the translators visibility is emphasized by the vesting of such power, the main purpose of which is to ensure legal certainty in business relations in society. From a Brazilian secondary school transcript translated by twelve sworn translators of the State of São Paulo into Canadian English, this work aims, with the support of Auberts translation modalities (2006), to map the translation strategies and profiles of such various professionals, from two different generations, who passed the last two public examinations held by the Board of Trade of the State of São Paulo (in 1978 and 1998), taking into account their visibility by the full faith and credit. The text typology school document and the gender school transcript were chosen because of their great frequency in sworn translation, motivated by the increasing academic and cultural exchange between Brazil and Canada, the United States, and other English-speaking countries. Therefore, we briefly reflected on Berman (1985), Rei (1971, 1976) and Bakers (1996) models and their application to sworn translation and particularly to the study of the subject matter hereof. Then, we described Vinay and Darbelnets (1958) translation procedures, which were the basis for the conception of Auberts (1984, 1998, 2006) translation modalities model. In addition, we outlined the evolution of the translation modalities model, with an emphasis on changes made and possible contributions. Thus, we adopted a two-stage methodology in this study. First, we compiled the data for the dispersion of the translation solutions, and then, classified the data into lexical units to apply the translation modalities model. Finally, we described the profile of each translator and the general results by group, as well as a comparison between the two generations, presented in graphical form. The hypothesis of high visibility was proven to be valid and necessary as a legal guarantee of the proper application of full faith and credit in fulfilling the office of sworn translator and commercial interpreter.

When CSR meets the stock market : the role of investor attention / Responsabilité sociale de l'entreprise et performance financière : quel rôle pour l'attention des investisseurs

El aouadi, Amal 23 November 2016 (has links)
[...] / This thesis consists of three empirical essays investigating the role of investor attention as a determinant of the relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and financial performance. Our aim is to rethink the controversial literature on the financial implications of CSR activities by exploring a new premise – investor attention may shape the financial returns on corporate social impact. Since a growing stream of literature has highlighted the role of firm visibility as well as stakeholder attention to connect CSP to financial performance in addition to the complementary literature of investor attention and stock prices, we expect that controlling for firm-specific investor attention would provide novel insights to the literature on the potential financial effects of CSP.A consistent strand of literature has provided interesting evidence of a strong relationship between the firm CSP and its stakeholders such as consumers, employees, suppliers, investors, analysts, activists and communities, and regulators, with the benefits being stronger, the greater the attention to and salience of social activities among stakeholders. We complement and extend this literature by implementing a more granular analysis and particularly we focus on the relevance of investors’ attention, a scarce and limited cognitive resource. This research is divided in four chapters. The first chapter is a survey of prior theoretical and empirical literature on the controversial debate of the relation between CSR and financial outcomes. We have particularly reviewed potential mechanisms that allow CSP to translate into CFP. Most importantly, we rely on studies claiming that firm visibility is a crucial factor to connect social impact to financial performance. Another argument of great appeal is the stakeholder attention theory as proposed by Madsen and Rodgers (2015) from which our research question draws its full legitimacy. Then, we have connected the literatures on attention, information, decision making and CSR to remake the CSP-CFP puzzle and highlight potential research hypotheses. A more readable view is provided by Figure 1 (later in this document) which integrates and synthesizes key predictors, outcomes, mediators, and moderators of the CSP-CFP relation by focusing on studies related to CSR and firm visibility thereby introducing the role of investor attention. Figure 1 is not an exhaustive conceptualization of all the intervening variables in this relationship but rather meant as a multilevel lens and guiding framework to which other variables can be added in the future. However, despite all the advancements in assessing the returns on CSR investments, this debate remains unsettled and has yielded conflicting results. Thus, we conducted three empirical essays on the relation between CSP and financial performance and particularly provide new and unique evidence on the role of investor attention to shape this controversial empirical issue. Therefore, in the first essay, we conduct a multi-country event study and investigate the impact of environmental, social and governance (ESG) news headlines on the shareholder wealth. We find that investors do not value positive ESG news headlines but negatively react to negative ESG news headlines. This result is consistent with the idea that social responsibility and irresponsibility are not the two sides of the same coin. Furthermore, evidence reveals that shareholders only react to negative corporate governance related headlines. This suggests that investors may be especially prone to attend to corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that directly impact their own interests as previously suggested by T. M. Jones et al. (2007). Most importantly, investor attention was found to shape the punishment and reward of CSP, after controlling for the additional role of firm’s internal moderators such as firm size and advertising expenditure. Kärleken utan namn : Identitet och (o)synlighet i svenska lesbiska romaner

Bergdahl, Liv Saga January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study representations of identity and (in)visibility in Swedish lesbian novels written in the 1930s, and to provide a summary of Swedish lesbian literature up to the early 21st century. This study has been done through a close reading primarily of Charlie by Margareta Suber (1932), Fröknarna von Pahlen by Agnes von Krusenstjerna (1930–1935) and Kris by Karin Boye (1934). Lesbian literature is discussed as a loose category, a construction which can be used as an analytical tool in a conscious and reflexive way, with its basis in the categories of author, text and reader. In short, I define lesbian literature as novels written by women, about lesbian figures and/or relationships, and for lesbian readers in the sense that the literature depicts lesbians from an insider’s perspective. As regards the period before 1930, the focus is on romantic friendship and the excitement zone when the romantic friendship becomes a sexual one, as seen in the fictitious case of Sin fars dotter (1920) by Lydia Wahlström. Sexological theories, the image of “the new woman” and changes to the law all colour the first half of the 20th century. This is seen in Charlie by Margareta Suber, where the author makes use of many such explanations in her creation of a lesbian figure. A reading of Fröknarna von Pahlen by Agnes von Krusenstjerna shows an intricate pattern of relationships at its heart. My analysis charts several same-sex couples, a lesbian single woman and two collectives; that is to say, the female collective and the male homosexual collective. The relationships between women are many-faceted and include everything from romantic friendship, kinship and sensualism to eroticism and shared parenthood. In my analysis of Kris by Karin Boye, I focus on Malin, the main character, and the development of her sense of identity, in which the struggle between the language of the world around her and her own emotional experience of love for a woman is a central theme. After the 1930s, the historical context changed in terms of everything from decriminalisation in 1944 via the homophobic panic of the 1950s to the impact of queer theory in the 1990s. Swedish lesbian literature addresses everything from crime of passion (murder) to the coming out process of young women. There exists in all novels from the 1930s an interplay that is (in)visible: the characters or lesbian relationships depicted are both visible and invisible at the same time. The characters are more or less aware of the potential risks attached to being visible as a lesbian, and often they do not notice themselves when this occurs. During the course of the 20th century, (in)visibility becomes replaced by openness and secrecy, and the visibility of the lesbian characters is politicised. / The abstract is translated by Janet French.

"Before Our Eyes: Les mots, non les choses. Jean-Luc Godard's "Ici et ailleurs" (1970-74) and "Notre musique" (2004)"

Emmelhainz, Irmgard 05 March 2010 (has links)
Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin made in 1970 a “political film politically” about the Palestinian Revolution, Jusqu’à la victoire, which remained unfinished. Under the framework of their audio-visual research project, Sonimage, Godard edited the Palestinian footage with Anne-Marie Miéville. Working through the collapse of the revolutionary project, imaging the Palestinian resistance became a matter of the restitution of speech to the absent and to the dead Palestinians – to whom, as Godard laments self-critically in the film, they had not listened to. Godard’s and Miéville’s compass for action was reconfigured as “audiovisual journalism,” addressing the changing conditions in political engagement, challenging the mediatization of mediation prompted by the Leftist utopian belief in the emancipatory potential of the media. The hegemonic discourse circulating within Leftist intellectual culture abandoned the iconic referent of “The Revolution,” which became the fatal harbinger of totalitarianism. Since then, Third World subjects have been figured as terrorists or victims who are incapable of determining themselves politically, or to “develop” economically. Such a turn has given leeway to new models of engagement and emancipation that account for the real of reality, embedded in the non-discourse of rights or counter-memory, while beckoning for a politics of infinite restitution. Godard returned to the Palestine Question thirty years later in Notre musique, by stopping-over in post-war Sarajevo, a place where it became possible for Godard to host a gathering of the Trojan poets and storytellers of sorts. Reconciliation and rehabilitation are the reverse-shot of a world of violent ethnic strife evidencing the futility of the politization of forgiveness. By way of a montage, Godard vouches for the mobilization of the powers of the false in order to save the real. The beautiful becomes necessary to “cover” memories of catastrophe. The aesthetico-political task is the regulation of the distance between the viewer and the screen. The conditions are the belief in images, faith and the desire to see as our links to the world. Within the pervasiveness of the hyperreal and culture, which Godard equates to ruins, the exiles and vanquished call for the exception, which is art.

Distributed Mobile Robot Localization and Communication System for Special Interventions

Sales Gil, Jorge 28 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the development of a distributed mobile robot localization and communication system for special interventions like those carried out by fire-fighters in fire ground search and rescue. The use case scenario is related to the one described for the GUARDIANS EU project, where a swarm formation of mobile robots accompany a fire fighter during a rescue intervention in a warehouse. In this line, localizing the robots and the fire fighter during an indoor intervention with the presence of smoke is one of the more interesting challenges in this scenario. Several localization techniques have been developed using ultrasonic sensors, radio frequency signals and visual information. It has also been studied several communication protocols that can help to improve the efficiency of the system in such scenario and a proposal for designing a cross-layer communication platform that improves the connectivity of the mobile nodes during an intervention and reduces the number of lost data packets.
