[en] This dissertation aims to analyze female prostitution in Rio de Janeiro, from the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, focusing on the role of black and brown women in this practice. The main goal is to mark a presence of these groups of women in the history of prostitution, observing how racism, based on racial theories, that were affirmed in Brazilian society throughout this period, decisively influenced the way in which they were faced by their contemporaries. Through the testimonies present in the main newspapers of the period, as well as of police and judicial records, the aim is to analyse the specific forms of repression and control that have been targeted by legal and police institutions since 1871, as well as the experiences shared by them between the final decades of the Empire and the early years of the Republic. This demonstrates the process of building networks of solidarity between these women, as well as their strategies for survival in the face of the daily persecutions that affected them.

[pt] DIREITO À SAÚDE PARA QUEM?: EXPERIÊNCIAS DE MULHERES TRANS E TRAVESTIS NEGRAS NO ACESSO AOS SERVIÇOS DE SAÚDE / [en] RIGHT TO HEALTH FOR WHOM?: EXPERIENCES OF TRANS WOMEN AND BLACK TRANSVESTITES IN ACCESSING SERVICESRENATA DE SOUZA SILVA 06 October 2022 (has links)
A discussão do
referido estudo são fundamentadas pelas correntes teóricas do feminismo
[en] Currently, Brazil is in the first places in the ranking of countries where the
LGBT population, especially transvestites and trans women - particularly black
women - suffer serious violations of human rights, for having more than one type
of colonial oppression in their bodies, mainly regarding access to health services.
The main objective of the present study is to understand, from an intersectional
point of view, how their access to health services is configured, taking into
account how these women, as people in extreme social risk, seek the effectiveness
of their rights, for through survival strategies. The discussion of the
aforementioned study is based on the theoretical currents of decolonial feminism,
intersectionality and transfeminism, by apprehending that this theoretical path
would allow us to contemplate the speeches of women so invisible by the process
of coloniality of power and gender that remains until the present day. Assuming
that the existence of a national policy for comprehensive health care for the LGBT
population is not a guarantee of access to health services for trans women and
black transvestites, it is demonstrated through the difficulty they have in accessing
health services, due to to discrimination. We used as a methodological technique
the focus group with 6 trans women and black transvestites, in order to value their
historicity, the meanings/senses they attribute to their experiences, feelings,
experiences, beliefs, etc., in the access to public health services. At the end of the
study, it was possible to see that the National Policy for Integral Health,LGBT, is
something that is not effectively present in the daily reality of these women s
lives, considering that when they try to access health services, they are not served
within the complexity of their plural experiences, but rather yes, through a
segregating reductionist logic, which reproduces more social invisibility.

[en] This dissertation entitled, Black Women and University: a reflection on the

[pt] CONSTRUÇÃO INTERSECCIONAL DAS CONDIÇÕES DE MULHERES NEGRAS NA BAIXADA FLUMINENSE E LUTA POR RECONHECIMENTO / [en] INTERSECTIONAL CONSTRUCTION OF BLACK WOMEN S CONDITIONS IN BAIXADA FLUMINENSE AND THE STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITIONYANS SUMARYANI DIPATI 11 October 2022 (has links)
negras. / [en] The central argument of this thesis focuses on the concept of disrespect in
the theory of recognition of Axel Honneth. According to the German philosopher,
the experience of disrespect of certain social groups unleashes a mobilization
toward a struggle for recognition. From this point of view, the struggle for
recognition aims at restoring relations broken by systematic practices of offense
which injures self-trust, self-respect, and self-esteem. In view of testing this
hypothesis, I opt as a field of empirical observation for the conditions of black
women who daily suffer discrimation and domination based on race, gender and
class in Baixada Fluminense, particularly in the municipalities of Duque de
Caxias and Nova Iguaçu. At the first moment, I will present a diagnosis of the
way the multiple discrimination, race, gender and class, take place in the daily life
of black women living in the region historically marked by the precariousness of
the basic conditions of life both in economic and cultural terms. Secondly, I will
demonstrate the capacity of this experience in mobilizing black women in
different spaces of social organization such as collectives, NGOs, and social
movements. At last, I will pinpoint on the relevance of political representation in
the decision-making spaces in view of the defense of basic rights which may
guarantee the integrity and the minimally worthwhile conditions of life for black
women.

internacional ampliado no pós Guerra Fria. A Resolução
estereótipos, as instituições internacionais têm destacado
a importância de fortalecer as mulheres organizadas no
[en] The dissertation discusses the work of women`s organization
for peace in Colombia, in the context of the broadening of
internationals security. Contemporary international
security studies question the monopoly of the State
as the subject of security. Gender violence is one of the
main components of a comprehensive concept of international
security, developed since the 1990`s. Security Council
Resolution 1325/2000 recognized the links between women,
war and security. The gender dimension of the culture of
violence is translated in the creation of frontiers between
protectors and protected. The vulnerability of protected
beings justifies the power of protector ones, exercised in
military and strategic capabilities. The hegemonic
masculinity is construed in opposition to a concept of
passive, politically alienated and inherently threatened
femininity. As challenge to these stereotypes,
international agencies have been highlighting the
importance of strengthening women`s groups and projects at
the local level. This is the context of creation of two
Colombian organizations, called Ruta Pacífica de Mujeres
and Iniciativa de Mujeres por la Paz. These
are networks of women`s organizations making visible the
impact of the armed conflict on the lives of Colombian
women. The dissertation asks whether and how their
political actions and discourses break with the masculine
constitution of power that justifies the militarization of
civil life in the name of the protection of feminine
vulnerable identities.

enfrentamento à violência contra as mulheres –, o trabalho estabelece a relação
[en] This work uses the sociology of social movements to describe the
contemporary Brazilian women s movement and its relation to democracy in the
democratic period begun in the 1980s. The objective of the research is to point out
elements that explain the dynamics of the Brazilian women s movement, the
characteristics of its organization along the process constructing the political
subject and its collective political action in the struggle for the conquest of rights.
In presenting three strategies of political influence of the women s movement –
namely public policies for women, domestic work and facing violence against
women –, the study establishes the direct relation of the action of this social
movement with the conquest and application of rights such as specific public
policies to increase women s citizenship, labor legislation for domestic workers,
and a specialized law to end domestic violence against women.

[en] I LL START ON MONDAY: THE CYCLIC STRUCTURE OF DIETING NARRATIVES AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF SUFFERING / [pt] SEGUNDA EU COMEÇO: A ESTRUTURA CÍCLICA DAS NARRATIVAS SOBRE DIETA E A CONSTRUÇÃO DO SOFRIMENTORAQUEL FREIRE DE SOUZA 16 August 2018 (has links)
[en] The stories about dieting seem to ordinarily circulate in our society and they are mainly tied to feelings of guilt, frustration and dissatisfaction. Based on this context, this research aims to investigate the construction of suffering in dieting narratives through semi-structured interviews conducted with university students who were under dietary assistance with a nutritionist. It seeks to understand how the discourses about eating, body and health act on the life stories of women who go on a diet and how they are made significant through their narratives. The SocioInteractionist perspective and the Narrative Analysis, which are located in the qualitative and interpretative research paradigm, are used as theoretical framework. The analysis starts from the microssocial situation, specifically narratives coconstructed during the interview, since it is a space of construction, contestation and negotiation of the meanings that go through the macrossocial sphere. The results show the narrative strategies used by interviewees to move away from physical and psychological stigmas. It also points out the cyclical structure of these narratives, relating the process of dieting to an endless journey that seeks to meet expectations about eating habits, body and health, built both individually and socially. These cyclic narratives shape the sense of imprisonment caused by the rigorous control of eating, constructing the idea of suffering. Finally, this dissertation opens space for a critical and multidisciplinary discussion, since disciplinary practices of the body and eating have been resulting on embarrassments to self-expression.

[en] MILITANT BLACK WOMAN: LIVE STORIES, IDENTITY AND RESISTANCE IN THE CONTEXTO OF AFFIRMTIVE ACTION AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] MULHER NEGRA MILITANTE: TRAJETÓRIAS DE VIDA, IDENTIDADE E RESISTÊNCIA NO CONTEXTO DA POLÍTICA DE AÇÕES AFIRMATIVAS NA UNIVERSIDADE DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIROMAGALI DA SILVA ALMEIDA 20 October 2016 (has links)
O universo
[en] This study aims at contributing to the understanding of black women s
political activism. It focuses on students that benefitted from affirmative action
programs at UERJ. My analysis posits that racist and sexist capitalism veils and
naturalizes racial and gender violence, renders invisible black women s historical
forms of resistance, but does not annihilate their resistance. Stereotypes and
negative representations of black women are both absorbed and negated by black
women. Black women s struggles throughout Brazilian history have confronted
domination patterns, thus creating, following Castells, the conditions for the
deconstruction of legitimizing identities as well as the affirmation of project
identities. This work wants to understand the meanings, limits and possibilities of
the collective construction of identities based on race and gender. It analyzes the
trajectories of five undergraduate female students who entered the university
through the racial quota system, beginning in 2003, under the following criteria:
a) that they are, or have been, students at Uerj; b) that they self-define as black
woman; c) and that they participate(d) in a Black Movement or Black woman
organization during their undergraduate years. The questions structuring field
work were: a) how does racism impact the process of the militant black women s
identity construction at Uerj? b) what aspects of their lives were considered
relevant when confronting racism at the university? Racism is an important
ideology of domination in capitalism: this is the hypothesis of the research.
Capitalism aims at annihilating the African-based cultural roots that are necessary
for the construction of a racial identity, and upon which a black identity is built.
The research utilized a series of methodological and theoretical approaches,
namely: a) based on available sources, the analysis of gender and racial
inequalities, as well as the construction of new indicators derived from Uerj data
bases; b) interviews and photographs; and c) bibliographic review on affirmative
action, racism, and black women. The work finds that the interviewee s
experiences are permeated by racial violence. However, what distinguishes them
from other black women is their choice of politics as a way to approach power
relations that structure class, race, and gender in society.

[en] INVISIBLE WOMEN: AN ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER STEREOTYPES ON INCARCERATED WOMEN S LIFE / [pt] MULHERES INVISÍVEIS: UMA ANÁLISE DA INFLUÊNCIA DOS ESTEREÓTIPOS DE GÊNERO NA VIDA DE MULHERES ENCARCERADASDEBORA CHESKYS 14 September 2018 (has links)
[en] Stereotypes are generalizations about attributes, traits and behaviors which belong to a group. Although it is accepted their usefulness in practical social life, they can create distortions and consequently lead to damage when, on failing to consider the specificities of certain persons or groups, support the denial of their rights. In a patriarchal society where woman was constructed in relation to men, gender stereotypes contribute to create and reinforce gender hierarchies that operate against women. In the case of Brazilian women prisoners, we can see how stereotypes act to criminalize them twice by observing the prisons conditions to which they are subjected. The reality of prisoners shows that the stereotype of women as weak and passive when broken generates greater social disapproval, so their criminality seems to be more severe than that of men. There are two aspects that must necessarily be regarded in the study of women s imprisonment: women s custody prior to the penal system, embodied by a policy of informal control implemented by the family, and the intersection between the multiple focuses of discrimination that women in prison suffer. Being Law an institution where gender stereotypes are reproduced, this work aims at questioning to what extent it can be an instrument of struggle for equality, recognizing the urgency in
building and enhancing some feminist criminology that can transform the practices of gender that have prevented incarcerated woman to receive adequate treatment.

[en] Social network websites, led mainly by Facebook, represent nowadays a social and communication phenomenon due to their popularization and constant use by millions of people spread all over the world. According to studies, one innovation brought by social network websites was the consolidation of web chats, meaning, public social interaction, personalized and permanent mostly used by women. The current researcher was able to confirm those studies by using Facebook chat, which indicates a greater motivation carried out by women to use cyberspace in order to develop relationships, convey affection and emotion. Within this context, the purpose of this research was to identify and describe the appropriation of Facebook by a group of urban women, economically active, in the age group ranging from 30 to 45 years-old. This group was observed in terms of sociability and exposition, in other words, in which ways those practices are carried out on Facebook by women, focusing on their characteristics and primary motivations. Furthermore, the current study also analyzed the contribution of the construction and maintenance of the symbolic identity of the modern women.
