Užití autobiografických motivů v dílech Edgara Dutky, Elišky Vlasákové a Antonína Bajaji / Use of Autobiographical Motifs in Works of Edgar Dutka, Eliška Vlasáková and Antonín Bajaja

The work confronts prosaic pieces with noticeable autobiographical features. It deals namely with works of Edgar Dutka, Eliška Vlasáková and Antonín Bajaja. It was not a coincidence to choose right these three Czech authors. They have quite a few features in common. They all belong to the same generation. They are born in the 40's of the 20th century, so they have spent an essential part of their lives (childhood, adolescence and substantial part of their working age) in the second half of the 20th century - in the time of political convulsions and social changes. A childhood spent during this period has become their common literary theme. They all make their memories a literary piece. Each of them does it in a different way and with a different amount of accuracy. Their inspiration comes from their real life, from their memories. The next common feature of these three authors is that they all wrote some of their texts without a vision to make them public. They wrote them for themselves. Book editions were carried out after the year 2000. Last but not least mutual fact is that all of these three authors have been nominated for a prestigious literary price. Mestrado em Arte Multimédia / Biografia e Autobiografia Universal: para um modelo de análise dos rituais de produção e consumo na arte multimédia trata do estudo e análise de formas alternativas que questionam o modo como criamos a nossa memória cultural colectiva por meio de objectos e rituais. O campo de investigação aqui exposto permanece distinto da História ou Crítica da arte. A abordagem aos rituais é realizada pelo do ponto de vista sócio-cultural, ambicionando reconhecer um modelo de profusão cultural. Inicialmente, é analisado o papel da memória na construção de conteúdos culturais. Com esse intuito, é discutida a validade de dispositivos externos, como a hermenêutica e os rituais nessa construção. Abordando temas gerais como a Memória, Cultura e Linguagem estabelecem-se dicotomias entre Hermenêutica e Rituais, Texto e Imagem, de modo a perceber uma evolução dos rituais tradicionais para rituais contemporâneos em actividades artísticas. É questionado, nos rituais contemporâneos, o seu potencial de, como manifestações performativas, que se centram no indivíduo, constituírem o formato privilegiado para uma linguagem transversal, independente de religiões, nacionalidade, ou grupo. Sendo a investigação desenvolvida no âmbito do Mestrado em Arte Multimédia, avançou-se por uma análise de propostas artísticas que discutem a amplitude dos conceitos de multimédia e performance. A presença do subtítulo Para um modelo de análise dos rituais de produção e consumo na arte multimédia representa um enquadramento da dinâmica presente nos rituais contemporâneos em manifestações de trabalho artístico de tendência biográfica e autobiográfica. A reflexão sobre o modelo de interpretação e análise é realizada perante o corpo de trabalho das artistas: Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum e Morgan O Hara, procurando indagar se os seus trabalhos têm a capacidade de se caracterizarem como dispositivos de memória. / Universal Biography and Autobiography: for a model of analysis of the rituals of production and consumption in multimedia art regards the study and analysis of alternative forms of questioning how we create our collective cultural memory through objects and rituals. The field of investigation here shown stands apart from areas of History or Art criticism. The approach to rituals is made from the Socio-cultural view point, aspiring to recognize a model of cultural profusion. Foremost, the role of memory in the construction of cultural content is here analyzed. With that intent, the validity between external devices, such as hermeneutics and rituals, is discussed on that construction. Approaching broad themes such as Memory, Culture, Language, dichotomies between Hermeneutics and Rituals, Text and Image are established to understand an evolution from traditional rituals to contemporary ones in artistic activity. It is questioned and suggested that contemporary rituals, with their potential of being performative manifestations that centre on the individual, constitute a privileged format for a transverse language, independent of religion, nationality or group. Being the investigation developed in the scope of the Master in Multimedia Art, an analysis of artistic proposals was followed, that discusses the breadth of the multimedia and performance concepts. The presence of the sub-heading For a model of analysis of the rituals of production and consumption in multimedia art , represents a framing of the dynamic which is present on contemporary rituals in biographical and autobiographical artistic work. Pondering about the model of interpretation and analyses is made in the presence of the body of work of the artist: Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum and Morgan O Hara, seeking to inquest if their work can be characterized as a memory agent.

La letteratura concentrazionaria / Literature Based on the Experiences in Concentration Camps

Affrontando lo studio della Letteratura Italiana risulta evidente l'omissione dai manuali, ad eccezione di Primo Levi, degli scritti di coloro che sono stati deportati tra il 1939 e il 1945 in seguito alle persecuzioni razziali. Il tempo trascorso dalla Shoah ha, invece, dimostrato la presenza di un ingente quantità di opere che costituiscono il corpus della Letteratura Concentrazionaria, ossia la letteratura dei campi di concentramento. Gli autori di questa letteratura sono poco conosciuti e considerati minori, ma la loro scrittura raggiunge spesso un'ineguagliabile altezza intellettuale, morale, stilistica. La narrazione dei loro ricordi traumatici è il risultato di precise decisioni: quali fatti raccontare, in che ordine cronologico, ma soprattutto attraverso quale forma. Questi testi concentrazionari, infatti, possono essere studiati da diversi punti di vista, quello più inusuale è la divisione per generi: racconto, autobiografia, saggio, romanzo, diario, lettera, poesia. Non sempre la distinzione fra questo o quel genere è netta, ma è molto significativo che a partire da una tragedia, quale l'Olocausto, si possa scegliere di raccontare la propria esperienza prestando attenzione al modo di esprimerla. È il primo segno che dimostra quanto anche di fronte al male l'uomo non perda il desiderio di ricercare il vero ed il bello. / Such a long time has passed since the end of the Shoah and it has become clear that there are a lot of works written in those years which now form the corpus of literature based on the experiences in concentration camps. The authors of these works are not very well-known and they are usually considered minor but their works have often reached highly intellectual, moral and stylistic results. The narration of their traumatic memories is the result of precise decisions, i.e. what to tell, in what chronological order, but especially in what forms. The texts based on the experiences in concentration camps can in fact be studied from different points of view. The most unusual is their study through genres: short story, autobiography, essay, novel, journal, letter, poetry. The distinction between one genre and another is not often clear-cut. What is interesting to underline is that in front of a tragedy, as the Holocaust was, it is possible to choose to tell one's own experience by paying special attention to the way of expressing it. This is evidence that in front of evil man does not ever lose the desire to look for truth and beauty.

Den ensamma sjöjungfrun : Om Carina Rydbergs jagberättande ur ett genreperspektiv / The Lonely Mermaid : On Identity Narration and Genre in the Autobiographical Works of Carina Rydberg

The focus of this study is the two autobiographical novels Den högsta kasten (1997) and Djävulsformeln (2000) by Swedish author Carina Rydberg. Both novels generated lively public debate regarding how they ought to be read and understood, what genre they belonged to, and the ontological status of the narrating “I”. The aim is to investigate why the protagonist, Carina, is perceived as unintelligible by many readers and explore how she can be understood in relation to what constitutes an intelligible identity from a literary and cultural perspective. The novels, as well as their protagonist, are approached from the perspective of genre theory, the argument being that Carina’s unintelligibility is directly dependent on what genre she is read in relation to. In the first part of the thesis the ambiguities of autobiographical texts are discussed, and the narrative and protagonist are analyzed in relation to the autobiographical genre. In the second part of the thesis the consequences of reading the texts as examples of the Gothic with emphasis on monstrosity, the uncanny and sexual transgression are examined. The two readings demonstrate how interpretations of text and character are highly influenced by the reader's expectations connected to genre. Rydberg’s transgression of the norms of genre, gender, and identity leaves the reader with a contradictory set of genre-specific expectations, which in turn makes it difficult to understand and accept the protagonist. The main theme of both novels is Carina’s unsuccessful attempts to reconcile what she sees as two separate, essentially incompatible identities: woman and author. The final chapter includes a comparative study in which Rydberg’s novels are linked to works by other Swedish female writers, both past and contemporary, to demonstrate that the conflict of woman versus author is a common problem for female writers. The thesis closes with a discussion about the possibility of placing Rydberg in a specifically female literary tradition and demonstrate how a feminist analysis can make the unintelligible intelligible.

Dynamique de l'aveu et de la dénonciation dans les récits du sida d'Hervé Guibert

RÉSUMÉ Les répercussions du sida sur la communauté intellectuelle préfiguraient un changement certain dans l’esthétique littéraire contemporaine. Le témoignage de l’expérience individuelle de l’écrivain, à cet instant de désarroi collectif et de répression sociale à l’égard de la communauté homosexuelle, cherchait à provoquer une reconfiguration de l’espace de l’aveu par la projection du sujet privé dans la sphère publique. Cette posture de mise à nu avait déjà vu le jour dans les écrits féministes des années 70, mais elle a subi dans les années 80 et 90 une transformation importante puisque c’est le sujet masculin qui s’est exposé par la médiation du corps dans le récit de la maladie à l’heure du sida. Les discours de l’intime tentaient de rapprocher les espaces social et littéraire tout en affirmant des formes définies par des éthiques et des esthétiques hétérogènes. La période d’écriture de la maladie, qui clôt l’oeuvre de Guibert, est caractérisée par l’ancrage du contexte social de l’épidémie du sida. Par conséquent, les trois récits qui la fondent, soit À l’ami qui ne m’a pas sauvé la vie (1990), Le protocole compassionnel (1991) et Cytomégalovirus (1992), constituent le triptyque sur lequel s’appuiera ma réflexion, auquel s’ajoute le journal tenu par Guibert depuis son adolescence jusqu’à sa mort, Le mausolée des amants (2001), qui a été publié dix ans après la disparition de l’auteur. Cette oeuvre s’inscrit en partie dans cette mouvance du témoignage de la maladie, qui prend place entre 1987 et 1991, période pendant laquelle l’écrivain sent sa vulnérabilité sur le plan de sa santé. Il est proposé d’étudier à travers ces écrits l’écriture de l’aveu et de la dénonciation, telle qu’elle est pensée chez Guibert. Il s’agira de réfléchir sur les stratégies et les fonctions du témoignage littéraire d’une telle expérience à travers la mise en récit du sujet. Une problématique traverse toutefois cette posture de mise en danger individuelle où la nécessité de se révéler est l’objet d’un non-consensus. Or, cette recherche d’intensité par l’aveu, qui repose sur la maladie, la sexualité et la mort, veut dépasser sa dimension apocalyptique en tentant d’inscrire l’oeuvre dans une éthique sociale. De ce fait, le dévoilement, sur le mode de la dénonciation, s’oriente sur la dimension collective en prenant à partie la société et la communauté. / ABSTRACT The impact of Aids on the intellectual community anticipates an important change in contemporary literature’s aesthetics. Testimony of the writer’s experience, in an epoch of collective disarray and social repression towards homosexuals, strived to create a new context for self-confession by prospecting the personal subject into public sphere. This mode of self-exposure was already manifest in feminine texts from the 70’s, but it underwent an important transformation in the 80’s and 90’s. In the age of Aids, it is the masculine subject that, by means of the body, unveils itself in narratives about the disease. Discourses about personal intimacy attempted to bring social and literary spaces closer by elaborating forms of heterogeneous ethics and aesthetics. The closing period of Guibert’s work, which focuses on illness is anchored in the social context of the Aids epidemic. Consequently, the three texts, À l’ami qui ne m’a pas sauvé la vie (1990), Le protocole compassionnel (1991) and Cytomégalovirus (1992) constitute the central subject of my reflection, along with the personal diary that Guibert kept from his teenage years until his death, Le mausolée des amants (2001). To a certain extent, this journal bears witness to the encroaching disease, which evolved between the years 1987 and 1991, the period during which the writer felt a growing vulnerability regarding his health. This study will focus on Guibert’s thinking about confession and denunciation. It will be a matter of reflecting on the strategies and functions of literature bearing intensity to the subjective experience of Aids. Moreover, the quest for achieving intensity by self-confession which concerns telling the story of illness, sexuality and death, seeks to go beyond an apocalyptic dimension by inscribing the work in a social and ethical context. In this way, self-exposure holds forth the collective aspect by confronting society and community.

Self, life and writing in selected South African autobiographical texts.

Autobiographical writing acquired increasing importance during the apartheid period, with greater numbers of autobiographical texts being published by a more representative range of South Africans across race, class and gender categories. This thesis analyzes the implications of shifts in autobiographical production, in English, during the years 1948-1994 through the examination of selected texts. The readings are informed by poststructuralism, modified by information about indigenous black South African cultural practices, as well as by input supplied by some of the autobiographical texts themselves. This theoretical approach may be referred to as a "pratique de metissage" (Glissant). The texts selected for close reading are from a field of over 120 autobiographical texts. They were chosen for their ability to illustrate important trends in South African autobiographical writing, specifically with regard to the three constituent parts of autobiography: autos, bios, and graphe. The chapter dealing with the depiction of self interrogates the hierarchized discourses of male-biased humanism in Roy Campbell's Light on a Dark Horse (1951). In Ellen Kuzwayo's Call Me Woman (1985) I analyze the melding of the conceptual frameworks of indigenous black cultures and Western individualism by which the autobiographical subject is defined. Breyten Breytenbach's The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist (1984) is read as an exploration of the postmodernist decentred self. In the chapter focusing on the portrayal of life experiences, I examine the ways in which the narrator of Albert Luthuli's Let My People Go (1962) seeks to secure the reader's approval of his version of recent South African history; while the analysis of the sub-genre referred to here as worker autobiography is principally concerned with the politics of life-writing. In Chapter 5, I look at how Godfrey Moloi's My Life: Volume One (1987) uses the discourses of popular American movies of the 40s and 50s in order to validate a self victimized by racism, and also at the ways in which Lyndall Gordon's Shared Lives (1992) probes the limits and possibilities of biography through autobiographical speculation. The human nature of chemistry curriculum design and development: a Canadian case study

This thesis is a case study of the design and development of one Canadian province’s intended Grade 12 Chemistry curriculum. It explores the story associated with its design and development and the lived experiences of the stakeholders involved. The goal is to highlight the dynamic human nature of the curriculum construction process. Specifically, through a case study approach this research identifies several dimensions of the nature of curriculum development considered by Pinar et al. (1995), namely: the “historical, political,…phenomenological, [and] autobiographical” (p. 847). This research determined the factors that influenced this curriculum and the lived experiences of the stakeholders involved. It examined how they reflected on the curriculum process and curriculum product, and investigated the deconstruction/reconstruction processes experienced by some participants. This research helps educators make more informed decisions about designing, developing and implementing curriculum.

Cette thèse propose une analyse de la question de la survivance – notion ayant retenu l’attention de penseurs issus de différentes disciplines tels que Janine Altounian, Jacques Derrida et Georges Didi-Huberman – dans l’œuvre de Sarah Kofman, plus particulièrement dans son récit autobiographique intitulé Rue Ordener, rue Labat, paru en 1994. Quatre grandes orientations guident ce travail dont l’approche théorique se situe à la croisée de la littérature, de la philosophie, de la psychanalyse, de l’histoire (tant sociale que de l’art) et du juridique. Premièrement, nous nous intéressons à ce qu’implique non seulement le fait d’« échapper à la mort », en observant les moyens mis en œuvre pour y parvenir, mais aussi celui de « continuer à vivre » après l’événement de la Shoah. Deuxièmement, nous étudions les différentes manifestations de « la survivance active de l’enfant en nous » (J.-B. Pontalis) de même que celle de « l’objet perdu » dans le travail de deuil impossible, encore autrement « interminable », qui a pris corps dans l’œuvre de Sarah Kofman. Troisièmement, nous abordons la « survivance » au sens du Nachleben d’Aby Warburg et repérons la trace des autres écrits de la philosophe, elliptiquement condensés dans son récit par la reprise de thèmes, le retour de sujets antérieurement évoqués. Quatrièmement, nous interrogeons la locution pronominale « se survivre » et la portée de ses compléments : « dans son œuvre », « dans son témoignage », « dans les mémoires ». Parmi les points qui sont analysés en profondeur dans les chapitres de cette thèse, notons les motifs du ressentiment, du double tragique, du pardon et de l’oubli, de la « disgrâce », de la honte et de la culpabilité, ainsi que les différentes modalités de la survivance – la capacité d’adaptation et le rôle des mères, la lecture, le rire, les arts visuels – mises en œuvre par Sarah Kofman. Dans cette « œuvre-vie » (Pleshette DeArmitt), ce corpus singulier et unique, il s’est toujours agi de ceci, quoi qu’il lui en coûta : « affirmer sans cesse la survie », selon l’expression de Derrida. / This thesis considers the notion of survival—a concept that has attracted the attention of thinkers from various disciplines, from Janine Altounian to Jacques Derrida and Georges Didi-Huberman—in the work of Sarah Kofman, and specifically in her autobiography, Rue Ordener, rue Labat, which came out in 1994. Four lines of inquiry guide this work, whose theoretical approach lies at the crossroads of literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and history (both social history and art history), and which, in the central chapter, addresses the legal sphere as well. We begin by looking not only into what it means to “escape death,” (including the attempts to achieve such a goal), but also into the drive to “live on” after the event of the Shoah. Secondly, we study various manifestations of the “active survival of the inner child” (J.-B. Pontalis), as well as the manifestations of the “lost object” in the work of impossible mourning, equally “interminable,” as it takes shape in Kofman’s works. Thirdly, we address the question of “survival” in the sense of Aby Warburg’s Nachleben (a concept studied by Georges Didi-Huberman) and find traces of other writings by Kofman, elliptically condensed in her autobiography, which takes up themes and revisits subjects previously touched upon in her writings. Fourthly, we question the pronominal French locution “se survivre” (to outlive, to outlast) and the scope of its complements: “in his/her work,” “in his/her testimonial,” “in memories”—all drawn together in Kofman’s work in an exemplary manner. Among the points analyzed in depth in the chapters of this thesis are the motifs of resentment, the tragic double, forgiveness and forgetting, “disgrace,” shame and guilt, as well as various modalities of survival—the adaptation ability and the role of mothers, reading, laughter, the visual arts—all used by Kofman. This “LifeWork” (Pleshett DeArmitt), this singular and unique corpus, has always been about “ceaselessly affirming survival,” in the words of Jacques Derrida—no matter how high the price.
