Diskursanalys av autonoma vapensystem : Med Sverige i fokus / Discourse analysis of autonomous weapons systems : - with Sweden in focus

Andersson, Ellen January 2022 (has links)
Military developments suggest that autonomous weapons systems will be the future ofwarfare. Therefore, it is important to understand how to define the concept and how peopleexpress themselves around it. This paper will analyze how important actors in Sweden talkabout autonomous weapon systems. The concept of how autonomous weapons is constructedand what diversities and similarities there are in the expressions of autonomous weapons willbe examined in this paper. The question is if there is a hegemonic status in any discourse?Actors' expressions, such as political parties and researchers as FOI, SIPRI and The SwedishPeace and Arbitration Society, will be investigated. Social constructivism and discourseanalysis provide theoretical tools for the analysis. The discourses are organized byoperational and financial, human involvement, legal field and political discourses. The analysis shows how important characters try to give meaning to the phenomenon, forexample economic, human involvement and fear, which affect the different discourses. Theconclusions indicate that the juridical discourse has reached a hegemonic status, because allactors connect autonomous weapons to juridical frameworks.

Skolchefens makt och inflytande / The power and influence of the superintendent

Weståker, Maria January 2023 (has links)
Abstract  The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceived power and influence of superintendents in relation to their state-appointed role in the Education Act, and the autonomy it provides. This qualitative study uses Foucault’s analysis of power as its theoretical framework. The empirical data collects through semi-structured interviews with in total thirteen superintendents employed by municipals or independent schoolboards. Superintendents employed by independent schoolboards have generally been under-researched previously and this makes this study an important contribution. The empirical data is analysed using three of Foucault’s concepts of power: governance, power and counter-power, and power and knowledge. The results indicate a notable variation in the perceptions of superintendents regarding their power and influence. The context in which they operate, as well as the ownership or operation of the schools, also plays a role for the superintendents´ perceptions of power and influence. The results indicates that superintendents have power and highlight a significant difference between the role of a superintendent in an independent organization compared to a superintendent working in a municipal organization. The superintendent employed by an independent schoolboard has a more defined and distinct role compared to a superintendent in a municipal schoolboard. Furthermore, the results indicates that the superintendent’s perception of their power and influence depends due to several factors in the surrounding society for example, voter groups, conservation interests, skills shortage, and unemployment.

Problematising war: Towards a reconstructive critique of war as a problem of deviance

Andrä, Christine 02 February 2024 (has links)
This article redirects extant critiques of the modern problem of war at this problem’s underlying logic of deviance. According to this logic, war constitutes a kind of international conduct that contravenes behavioural norms and that can be corrected through diagnostic and didactic means. Thereby, war is rendered into a problem falling within the scope of human agency. However, this agency rests on and reproduces this logic’s constitutive blind spots. Therefore, it seems imperative to develop ways of problematising war otherwise. The article provides two starting points for (critical) IR scholarship seeking to undertake such a project. Firstly, it combines two Foucaultian tools, the concept of problematisation and the method of genealogy, to direct critique at the logics underlying our evaluative – analytical, ethical, and political –judgements. Secondly, it uses these tools to trace the contingent emergence of the logic of deviance in a crucial example within the wider genealogy of the problem of war: the Carnegie Endowment’s commission of inquiry into the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913. Based on original archival research, I highlight different elements of this inquiry’s problematisation of war – its frames, assumptions, ways of knowing, and subjects of knowledge – to make them available for reconstruction.

[en] NARRATE THE OTHER: NOTES ON VIOLENCE AND ETHICS IN MICHEL FOUCAULT AND JUDITH BUTLER S THOUGHT / [pt] RELATAR O OUTRO: NOTAS SOBRE VIOLÊNCIA E ÉTICA NO PENSAMENTO DE MICHEL FOUCAULT E JUDITH BUTLER

GABRIELA TEIXEIRA CUNHA 21 January 2020 (has links)
[en] This paper aims to conduct to reflect on the violence perpetrated in the name of ethics from a critical perspective based on the thinking of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. At first, it is pointed out the normative-social frameworks that define which lives matter and which lives are not even mournable. Then, recovering the ethical problematizations of the authors in reference, it is argued that the processes of subjectivation are a mean of opening to alterity. The Greek concept of ascesis - self-practices - investigated by Foucault is the key concept through which one tries to think of forms of resistance to subjectivating powers and a way of finding the other in the exercise of oneself, of recognizing it in its proximity and in their absolute strangeness. Butler s theory is fundamental at this point, since it explicitly proposes the question of you in the dialogue with several thinkers, among which, this paper highlights the issues of Emmanuel Lévinas philosophy. Finally, the proposal for an ethics of non-violence is based on Foucault s conception of the ethics of friendship and in Butler s point of view about responsibility. Both can work under the heading of an empty program, in the sense of not prescribing rules of conduct. Without giving up normativity completely, they indicate ethical possibilities that are not based on judgments.

The distributed power in the living room: : An critical discourse analysis of how PR-consultants talk about social media as a communication channel.

Westman, Jacob January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was set against the background that social media today are used as an platform for companies to communicate with their customers, as well as communicate their brand. Therefore it was interesting to examine this phenomenenon through a critical point of view and try to put light on the different forms of power that is produced on this arena. The overall aim of this study was to examine how PR-consultants talk about social media as a communication channel. The empirical data consisted of five interviews with PR-consultants on five different PR-agencies. The theoretical framework was based on a social constructional perspective and Foucault’s theory of power. A critical discourse analysis was used for analysing the data. The analysis resulted in two different discourses; the friendly relationship in the social livingroom and the professional relationship on the homeparty. These two discourses showed that social media is a platform that allows companies to create different and more personalized relations with their followers. The result also showed that the power relations between company and follower is distributed between them both, and that the power, in some ways, tend to be more invisible when the dividing line between commercial and private is blurred. Furthermore, due to result, the followers, the potential consumer, in some ways, are constructed in ways of how to be and how to act on the social media arena.

: A discourse analysis of the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's descriptions of parents of young offenders

Sundberg, Angelina, Sundqvist, Matilda January 2024 (has links)
The public and media are paying more attention to youth offending today and reform proposals that call for more parental responsibility as a means of preventing crime have taken note of this trend. The purpose of the study is to examine discursive descriptions on parenting as they are articulated in relation to parents of young offenders in a selection of publications published by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. Based on Foucauldian discourse analysis and Foucault’s theorizations on power, knowledge and subject, the study identifies four discursive representations of parents within the material. We found that parents of young offenders are portrayed as ignorant, immature, morally responsible or risky. It is assumed that the parent is both the cause of unlawful behavior and its solution. The study concludes that in the publications and their underpinning knowledge base, the accountability for societal problems is attributed to the parents.

Gagnon, Simon-Olivier 15 March 2024 (has links)
We propose a study on the culture of the care of the self in Antiquity, as it is exposed and interpreted by Michel Foucault in his course Herméneutique du sujet at the Collège de France. Based on the interpretation of the texts of the principal Latin philosophers of imperial Stoicism (Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius), the dissertation brings together the elements of a Foucaldian theory of the subject. The first part deals with Foucault’s perspective on the "genesis" of the subject, with regard to the "techniques of the self " through which one rationalizes oneself. The second part situates the subject that is elaborated in the practical experience of the relation to oneself, in asceticism and discipline, with regard to the relation to the other, to the body, to knowledge and to language. The last part presents the historical context in which the injunction to self-care has become an ethical imperative. It is then suggested that the crisis of Athenian democracy at the end of the 5th century played a significant role in the emergence of the Socratic injunction, and that the latter echoes the ruling classes on the political incompetence of the masses. The care of the self and the constant exercise of self-control then appear as prerequisites for participation in political life and common decisions. The culture of the self slowly change with the decline of the City- State, Roman domination, and the Hellenization of Rome, while reaching its peak in the High Empire. The culture of the self ends in the Christian construction of a culture of renunciation. It is asserted then that in each of these historical configurations, the culture of the self has fulfilled an important social function, but each time different.

Soares Jorge, Cíntia Maura 04 1900 (has links)
There is a discourse, gaining in popularity every day in academic and professional environment, which is reproduced in family and socio-cultural day-to-day life, regarding an adolescence perceived as problematic, a stage of crisis with which it is difficult to negotiate. Based on the writings of Foucault (1976), it is possible to think that this concern enters into the western construct of apparatus of sexuality. Based on this concept, the objective of this research project was to identify the possible constructs of one or more apparatus of sexuality in adolescents living in poverty in Brazil (Belém, Pará). The research methodology selected was a qualitative assessment using an ethnographic approach consisting in describing and interpreting a socio-cultural system or group (Creswell, 1998). The principal data collection technique, in addition to ethnographic observation and documentary analysis, was face-to-face in-depth interviews based on open questions. Fourteen adolescents living in the same underprivileged Belém neighbourhood were observed and interviewed, as well as their parents. The data analysis, carried out using Bardin’s content analysis (1977), revealed a apparatus of sexuality among the adolescents, parents and teachers interviewed based on the school, the church, the media and the State, which was described as a apparatus of safe sex whereas a apparatus of alliance, within the meaning of Foucault, was described after analysis and confirmation of the data as an alliance of the powerful. These results, with new information on an Amazonian sexuality arising from local Boto and Iara legends, cast new light on the question of the social construct of sexuality among adolescents living in poverty in Belém in the Brazilian state of Pará and led to specific recommendations to improve research and professional practices.

For that, we will work predominantly with Michel Foucault s work, using systematic analysis of this outstanding author, pioneer in showing that the body is in the center of the relations of power. Despite bearing an important contribution to the subject, Foucault s work presents some problems, among which we point out embracing the concept of the body as excessively abstract. Echoing a difficult relationship that the human sciences have kept with the body in modern days, by either simply ignoring it or considering it only as a symbolic object, Foucault ultimately detaches the body from its biological traces; the body which, when assuming its materiality, does so under an exceedingly mechanicist perspective. We repute that this view of the body devitalizes the subject and weakens the very idea of resistance that the French philosopher sustains in his work, reason why we propose, through an interdisciplinary dialogue, the adoption of another view of the body. It is in the work of Wilhelm Reich, as well as in some contemporary biologists and neurobiologists, that we will find the elements to think of the body not as a mere compilation of inert, malleable parts, as proposed by biomedical knowledge, but as an especial materiality, alive and dynamic, which remits to a long evolutionary process, occupying a central spot in our so called superior life. Our hypothesis is that this living body, capable of contemplating both symbolic and social aspects, as well as biological and material aspects, can intensify Foucault s idea of resistance, making the work of composing the self more efficient in its task of elaborating internalized means, capable of eluding the modern mechanisms of power: the body as an important ally against the methods of domination / Tendo em vista a crescente importância que o corpo vem assumindo no mundo contemporâneo, nosso objetivo nesta tese é problematizar a relação entre corpo e poder, tema ainda pouco explorado do ponto de vista da ciência política.
