: A study of green spaces' value and place in Gothenburg

Abraham, Mimmi, Thyr, Linnea January 2022 (has links)
Green spaces in urban areas contribute with many key functions that are vital for both animals and humans, such as biodiversity, ecosystem services and positive health effects. However, the existence of green spaces and their functions are threatened by the rapid global urbanization that is causing land use changes. According to the City of Gothenburg’s local environmental goals, the city aims to become ecologically sustainable by the year of 2030 through increased biodiversity and nature conservation. Gothenburg has been named as Sweden's greenest city, although the green spaces in Gothenburg have decreased between the years 1986–2019 and will continue to decline due to exploitation. The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was thus to increase knowledge about what stimulates decisions that cause a reduction of green spaces in Gothenburg despite set conservation goals, which was a neglected research area. To achieve the purpose, an inductive qualitative method was used with semi-structured interviews. The results were analyzed through theories of environmental psychology, environmental ethics and policy, namely values, goal-framing theory, value pluralism and wicked problems. The study concluded that Gothenburg's urban planning included several wicked problems and value conflicts that were expressed through goal conflicts, which negatively affected Gothenburg’s green spaces. Furthermore, strong hedonistic and egoistic values as well as gain goals, also had a negative impact on the existence of Gothenburg's green spaces.

Kommunala lantmäterimyndighetens insats för en effektivare detaljplane- och genomförandeprocess : En undersökande fallstudie av projektet BoStad2021 i Göteborgs Stad / The municipal land surveying authority’s effort for a more efficient planning and implementation process

Kahin, Mohammed, Olsson, Jonathan January 2023 (has links)
In 2014, the City of Gothenburg decided to increase the rate of construction by streamlining the detailed planning and implementation process. Previously these processes were dealt with separately and sequentially. To meet the society's needs and be able to build in line with population growth, the streamlining of these processes needed improvement and a new strategy. This bachelor thesis aim was to examine the implications of parallel processes and its contribution to the efficiency of the detailed planning process. The study specifically focused on the role of the municipal land surveying authority in the planning process and implementation process. A case study was conducted in the City of Gothenburg to address the research questions. BoStad2021 project was established to streamline the detailed planning and implementation process, with the goal of completing 7000 units by 2021. Gothenburg was the first municipality to implement parallel processes, wherein different departments collaborated early on and worked closely together to streamline the entire detailed planning and implementation process. Data was collected through three interviews with two-unit managers and one land surveyor involved in the establishment of BoStad2021 project in the City of Gothenburg. Furthermore, Chalmers University’s follow up research on BoStad2021 was studied to support the examination of changes in the municipal land surveying authority’s work method. The result of the study indicates that the municipal land surveying authority’s work method has undergone changes. Their role and work methods have become more proactive through the improved communication strategy. By working with parallel processes and a close cooperation with the other departments they have been able to initiate early land survey proceedings and prepare decision materials promptly after the detailed plan has gained legal force. These changes have contributed to a more efficient land surveying process.

Brand equity through rollercoasters and rabbits : Understanding the role of part-time marketers in enhancing the brand equity of an amusement park

Rivera, César, Byström, Fredrik January 2015 (has links)
Relationship marketing is a marketing theory that has gathered much focus in the marketing research area lately. The core idea of relationship marketing is to retain the existing customers of a company by establishing long-time relationships with them. The theory of brand equity is a well-known theory on brand development that deals with issues such as customer’s perceptions and the brand meaning. The main purpose of this thesis is to gain deeper understanding of what kind of role the front-line employees in terms of part-time marketers, have on the enhancing of Liseberg´s brand equity. Liseberg holds a special position for the citizens of Gothenburg, and as the biggest amusement park in the Nordic are with 3.1 million visitors in 2014, we argue that theories like relationship marketing and brand equity could be of importance for Liseberg to maintain their position in the minds of their customers. We have also been able to identify a research gap. We discovered that research about the role of part-time marketers in relation to brand equity is relatively scarce. Even more specifically, we have not been able to find studies regarding the role of part-time marketers in the enhancing of the brand equity of an amusement park. We have conducted a qualitative study in order to accomplish the purpose of our thesis. In our study, we conducted nine semi-structured interviews with managers, front-line employees and customers of Liseberg. The interviews helped us gain a deeper understanding on how the role of the front-line employees as part-time marketers was perceived both internally and externally in Liseberg. Data from different customer reports were also provided to us from Liseberg. From our qualitative studies as well as from the data provided by Liseberg, we can conclude that the role of the part-time marketers was perceived differently from the customer’s point of view, compared to what managers and front-line employees thought. Nevertheless according to our findings, we can conclude that part-time marketers have a very important role in the enhancing of Liseberg´s brand equity. Finally we have also made practical recommendations for the management of Liseberg regarding on how to work with the part-time marketer’s concept in mind to improve Liseberg´s brand equity.

Towards Sustainable Phosphorus Management : Material Flow Analysis of phosphorus in Gothenburg and ways to establish nutrient recycling by improving urban wastewater systems / Mot en mer hållbar fosforhantering : Substansflödesanalys av fosfor i Göteborg och sätt att uppnå näringsåtervinning genom att förbättra urbana avloppssystem

Borgestedt, Helena, Svanäng, Ingela January 2011 (has links)
All life forms require the nutrient phosphorus and it cannot be substituted by any other element. The global cycle of phosphorus is special among the major biogeochemical cycles, since it has no significant gaseous compounds and only closes every 10-100 million years. However, human activities, as application of mineral fertilizers, conversion of natural ecosystems to arable land and releases of untreated waste, intensify remarkably thephosphorus flows. The problems with linear flows of a limited resource leading to eutrophication of aquaticenvironments, for instance, have generated national environmental quality objectives for phosphorus in Sweden. The main objective of this master thesis is to get a holistic overview of how phosphorus is moving through Gothenburg today, using Material Flow Analysis as method. The spatial system boundary is the municipality of Gothenburg and the temporal system boundary is the year of 2009. One way of dealing with the linear flows ofphosphorus might be to develop the wastewater systems used in Gothenburg today. Possible changes in phosphorus flows, if kitchen grinders or urine-diverting toilets were installed in Gothenburg, are evaluated. In order to make the phosphorus management more sustainable, the linear flows have to be closed to a larger extent than today. One way towards this ambition is to emphasize other fertilizers than the mineral ones, like urine and low-contaminated sludge. The MFA shows that the absolutely largest input of phosphorus to Gothenburg is via the food. The two large outputs of the same magnitude are the digested sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of Rya and the ashes from the waste-fuelled district heating power plant of Sävenäs. About 7% of the phosphorus input to Gothenburg continues into the aquatic environment. According to this study, urine diversion and separate collection of food seem prospective in order to decrease the phosphorus flows in digested sludge from the wastewater treatment plant, ashes and aquatic deposition. An additional advantage would be generation of recycled fertilizing products with good quality. / <p>This master thesis has also been published as a technical report at Chalmers with Report No. 2011:124.</p>

: A Comparative Study of Tenants´ Associations in Stockholm and Gothenburg 1923–1939

Rolf, Hannes January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the formative years of the Swedish tenants´ associations in Gothenburg and Stockholm and the strategies used by these organizations to alter the housing market, both on a local and on a national level. It is both a transfer analysis, examining how strategies from the labor market came to be applied to the rental market and a comparative study, comparing tenants´ associations in two Swedish cities. Hyresgästernas Centralförsamling (HCF) in Gothenburg had a more conflict-oriented approach toward both individual and collectively organized landlords. The organizational structure of HCF was similar to that of a trade union federation. This differed from Stockholms Hyresgästförening (SHG). Resembling more a political association than a militant union, SHG adopted strategies more focused on gaining legislative protection for tenants and increasing the supply of available housing. This was partly achieved through the co-operative housing society Hyresgästernas Sparkasse- och Byggnadsförening (HSB). This thesis argues that the common denominator for all these strategies was to reduce the internal competition between tenants and thus strengthening them as a collective force on the rental market. The main conclusion of the thesis is that the tenants´ associations cannot be easily categorized by standard organizational models. Shaped by local, organizational and ideological factors the tenants´ associations were hybrid organizations resembling both trade unions, cooperative societies

THE INTEGRATION PROCESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION FOR FLOOD MANAGEMENT IN SPATIAL PLANNING : DRAWING EXAMPLES FROM ÄLVSTADEN-GOTHENBURGBETWEEN 1999-2015

Agdahl, Helen January 2017 (has links)
Due to climate change and natural variations in the hydrological cycle, global mean sea levels are increasing, causing the mean sea levels in different regions of the world to increase. In Sweden, coastal cities are facing rising water levels which is increasing flooding. The coastal community of Gothenburg, Sweden was identified the 18th most vulnerable city in the country both to flooding induced by water level rise and other climate change related impacts. Its location, in proximity of Lake Vänern, and in the mouth of the Göta River and its tributaries: Säveån, Mölndalsån and Lärjeån is heightening flood risk and vulnerability in the area. This thesis aims to contribute in comprehending the integration process of natural hazard and climate change adaptation for flood management in Älvstaden- central Gothenburg between 1999 and 2015. With the main objectives being” how the municipality of Gothenburg has applied the urban land use planning theory for the integration of natural hazard and climate change adaptation, with regards to adaptation for flood management in Älvstaden between 1999 and 2015? “What climate change adaptation policies for flood management have been implemented in Gothenburg within this time frame, and how the policies have been revised to match the reality of flood issues?” And “What improvements would be made in the integration process to better address adaptation for flood management?” A desk-based research and one case study approach was adopted for this study. The findings indicate that although the city has systematically used the steps involved in the integration process of natural hazard and climate change adaptation for flood management, it does not link the policies and the measures applied to adaptation for flood management. Which is an issue as it has led to the exclusion of vital functions of the integration process. Suggestions on how the integration process could be improved are provided.

Att designa bort det oönskade : Exkluderande design i Göteborg och Västsverige / Designing away the unwanted : Unpleasant design in Gothenburg and western Sweden

Bergenfelz, Charlotte, Silverglimth, Fredrik January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore different forms of unpleasant design in public and semi-public spaces and what potential consequences such design may have on different social groups. The results are based on focused observations of the physical designs themselves, primarily in Gothenburg, Sweden, in triangulation with text analysis of official documentations of land use and zoning plans. The findings indicate that a variety of designs were used throughout the observed public and semi-public spaces, some of which can be seen as unpleasant. Most of the observed seating options were located within privatised businesses, signalling the need to be a consumer to use these semi-public spaces. Semi-public spaces that are inaccessible during the night as well as anti-skate obstacles were other observed designs that targeted a certain group or behaviour. Four social groups were found to be more of a target or sufferer of the designs: the homeless, people with disabilities, the destitute, and skateboarders. In contradiction to previous research a substantial amount of the observed designs can be perceived as inclusive rather than only exclusionary.

BLAND TEMPEL OCH SVARTA LÅDOR : En diskursanalys av ett sekel av svensk konstmuseiarkitektur / AMONGST TEMPLES AND BLACK BOXES : A discourse analysis of a century of Swedish art museum architecture

Larsson, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine the discourse regarding art museum architecture in Swedish print media, with a focus on trade press magazines and daily newspapers, in order to identify the prevailing discourse(s) over the course of roughly a century. By using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis several articles in print media have been analysed, regarding the architecture of four museums built over a period of almost one hundred years: Gothenburg Museum of Art; Kalmar konstmuseum (Kalmar Art Museum); Jönköping County Museum and Bildmuseet in Umeå (Museum of Visual Arts). Five main discourses have been identified, with one predominantly present during the entire century: the importance of the museum architecture being ”modern”, ”new” or ”contemporary”. Other discourses include one that appeared after the emergence of modernism where parts of the general public associate obvious contrast between the building and its surroundings as a negative trait, and another one with an emphasis on transparency as a positive trait focusing on light and space. Overall, the discourses concerning domestic art museum architecture has been anything but static and has evolved in conjunction with changes in general architecture discourse, the symbolic value of the art museum, and social structures in the society as a whole.

Is it an open purchase on the education? : A qualitative study of two universities' design of strategic communication to prospective students.

Arvidsson, Emelie, Arvidsson, Emma January 2021 (has links)
The education market that has developed in recent decades has meant that higher education institutions work strategically with relationship-communication in order to sell their education. The problem area targets therefore a complexity in educational communication in schools at university level. We use a theoretical framework that includes Bourdieu, Mayhew, Carlbaum and Allelin to analyze web-based texts at a state university and a private university, with the use of a qualitative text analysis. The purpose of this study is to contribute to increased attention regarding how schools actively work with strategic communication to recruit students, and to discuss how the market development has influenced strategic communication within the school area. We want to receive a deeper insight into what characterizes the communication of the selected universities of this study. The study is based on the following question: How does the strategic communication work differ between the Stockholm School of Economics and Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law regarding the recruitment of students? The result shows many similarities in the content of the texts, but we see differences in the form of tonality and what is highlighted. The two universities allude to social capital and a secure labor market after completing their studies, but in different ways where tonality is crucial. The Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law alludes to a community and freedom of choice for the student, and the Stockholm School of Economics alludes to a strong network and a successful professional career at large companies. Depending on a prospective student's preferences, he or she is attracted to various forms of strategic communication, and thus chooses a university according to this.

Understanding The Impact Of Market demand For Paper And Paperboard On Swedish Ports : A scenario planning approach

Persson, Hanna, Bodiroga, Dejan January 2023 (has links)
Background: The global marketplace is characterized by rapid and constantchange, resulting in complex logistics systems. The port industry, which is a crucial link in the supply chain, seeks to understand the complexity of market dynamics. Ports should understand the changing market dynamics to better meet the market demand and have a competitive advantage. One representative from the port industry is Swedish ports and the Port of Gothenburg, which will be the focus of this thesis. The market demand for paper and paperboard has been a significant driver of shipping activities in Swedish ports. The market demand for bulk and container shipping is also relevant due to its influence on the port’s operation. Furthermore, itis essential for port authorities to understand the demand-oriented infrastructure to develop strategies to meet the market dynamics. Purpose: This thesis has been undertaken on behalf of the PoG. The purpose of the thesis is to provide a clearer understanding of how the current and future market demand of paper and paperboard influence Swedish ports with scenario planning. Based on the future market demand for paper and paperboard, additional information of the future market demand for bulk and container will be included in the scenarios. By using the scenarios, recommendations will be given regarding investments the port authority at PoG needs to implement as a response to future paper and paperboard market demand. Methodology: The thesis has a qualitative case study with Port of Gothenburg as the study object. Data collection has been conducted through semi- and unstructuredinterviews from the Swedish forest industry, three forest companies and port authority at Port of Gothenburg. Additionally, scenario planning will be the main analysis method in this thesis. Conclusion: The current market demand for paper and paperboard indicates that demand for paper is decreasing, while demand for paperboard is increasing. The future market demand for paper and paperboard can develop in several ways. The authors of this thesis believe that the market demand for paper will have a structural fall with an exception for special paper. While paperboard will have a continuous increase. Furthermore, there is currently an increase of bulk and container shipping in the Port of Gothenburg. The authors believe that future market demand for bulk will be stable, while container will have an increased trend. However, as the market demand is hard to predict, the thesis presents four scenarios of different futureoutcomes of market demand for paper, paperboard, bulk- and container shipping. There are several investments needed for the Port of Gothenburg to respond to theestablished demand scenarios. Investments that will benefit Port of Gothenburg themost are Port Community System (PCS), Integrated Warehouse ManagementSystem (IWMS), Real-Time Location System (RTLS), development of port quays, larger quay cranes and floating islands, and cold ironing and renewable energy. Key words: Paper, Paperboard, forest industry, bulk, container, cargo shipping, seaport, Port of Gothenburg, scenario planning, port investments
