The main goal of this study is to reflect upon the shapes and representations of madness in their intricate networks of social and historical relationships. An analysis will be developed to approach the dynamics and the effects of institutional practices on the patients, especially concerning exclusion processes and the reinsertion into society. Initially following a few reflections developed by Michel Foucault to think of madness historically and from the many practices enabled by the emergence and institutionalization of psychiatric knowledge, the discussion then turns towards the Brazilian context in order to briefly approach the beginning of psychiatry in the country and the unfolding of its Psychiatric Reform. As a complementary resource, the study presents results obtained by the application of questionnaires to the students graduating in 2015/1 from the Psychology course of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. With social representations as the background, the idea is to approach these future professionals who will relate directly to the theme of madness, acting in a privileged matter in the area of the discussion proposed here. Thus, this study intends to comprehend and problematize madness, as well as the possibilities opened to the difference encompassed by it in its social interactions.

This relation is questioned by Michel Foucault in the book The Order of Things, in the terms of an incompatibility, in which the reappearance of the "self" of language that shines in our landscape from the emergence of literature is understood to threaten the sovereign status granted by the modern thoughts to the man-form. From this clipping, we intend to explain the terms of this incompatibility considering that, facing this new space of language, a heterotopic space that provokes the fading of the figure that until then was central to the ordering of modern knowledge, it provokes the fading of the main figure to the ordination of modern knowledge, opening up species of gaps in our thoughts that makes it possible to think differently.

Segundo Niklas Luhmann, a confiança é importante porque reduz a complexidade social.

Kanni, Ali January 2017 (has links)
The present study deals with the institution in which many children spend a large part of their daily lives and thus their childhood. In preschool, the child is at the center of schooling and a part of a scheme with specific requirements, expectations and hopes.   The aim is to highlight how children are referred to and created as subjects when their behavior challenges or puzzles staff at preschool as a discursive practice.   The understanding that form the basis of this study is preschool staff’s experiences from professional practice and the difficulties that may exist when dealing with children that are challenging.   Through interviews with 4 pedagogues and after elucidating different discourses when it comes to children that are challenging on the ground that they relate to how pedagogues talks about children in different context. I´ve noticed four different discourses, children that upsets the natural order, children and situations of transition, children that puzzles and children and early interventions.  The result of the present study insinuated that it seems to be a discrepancy between the discourses about children that are challenging and the governing that control action and thinking in practice. For this a discourse analytic perspective with focus on power, mainly inspired by Michel Foucault has been used and Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis inspired by Gramsci and his use of hegemony.

Démons du crime : les pouvoirs du truand et son instrumentalisation idéologique dans la littérature et le cinéma de l’entre-deux-guerres (Allemagne, États-Unis, France) / Crime Devils : the power(s) of the mobster figure and its ideological use in the literature and cinema of the interwar period (Germany, France, United States)

Platini, Vincent 11 December 2010 (has links)
The cultural productions of the interwar years were marked by the proliferation of representations of the mobster figure. Historically, the socio-economic context facilitated the emergence of a certain criminality which started being widely depicted in mass culture including films, crimen ovels and drama. The mobster figure depicted in these productions turns out to be all the more versatile since power relations were going through profound changes at that time : the official authorities were being contested, the limits of legality were redefined and with the advent of the Third Reich, those who had once challenged power eventually acceded to it. The representations of mobsters therefore acquired ambiguous meanings. These characters could very well support social control by imposing norms and justifying measures of surveillance orembody resistance against the establishment, pointing out loopholes in control systems and promoting new life styles. Based on Michel Foucault’s works, this dissertation examines the social, scientific and political discourses featured in the cultural productions of that periodas well as the ideological, esthetical and practical instrumentalisation of these characters. This dissertation argues that mobsters may appear as participants of punitive and disciplinary systems which subdue the people, but may also be questioning the powers and discourses that shape their representations. This work further demonstrates that, because mass culture usually adapts itself to its consumers, the mobsters may also be taken on by the audience, being the promoters of new cultural practices and new social bonds.

La psychanalyse lacanienne et l'envers des normes : réponses à Michel Foucault / Lacanian psychoanalysis and the nether side of normalcy : responses to Michel Foucault

Pfauwadel, Aurélie 06 December 2016 (has links)
Diagnosing at a very early stage the decline in the traditional symbolic order, Lacan developed in the 1970s the conceptual tools that would be appropriate for grasping the modern deregulation of different forms of enjoyment and the new normative regimes that seek to keep them in check. Psychoanalysis’s contribution to the philosophical enquiry into norms hinges on how such experience lies radically beyond norms, allowing for a theorization not only of the processes of normalization by the Other, but also of subjective and subversive normalcy. This study demonstrates the specific irreducibility of psychoanalysis, where Foucauldian genealogies constantly downscale it to other discourses (medical, psychiatric, familial, legal, spiritual). We show: i. that Lacan’s structural theses of the 1950s promoting the Law of the Nameof-the-Father as a founding Norm, take aim at the normalizing drift of Ego Psychology; ii. that psychoanalysis targets, beyond the norms of life and society, a singular treatment of enjoyment through the letter; iii. that it is not, therefore, a technique that establishes categories, but rather ana-normative ethics; iv. that the Lacan of the 1970s, having offered an in-depth critique of his ownaxioms, proceeded to the nether side of his own teaching via a pluralisation of the Names-of-the-Father and a generalization of the symptom; v., that his thought culminated in a purely immanent conception of normative processes, while steering clear of historicism or Foucauldian relativism.Indeed, Lacan maintains the ex-sistence of an impossible and a real that puncture the plane of practice, whose economy alone is not sufficient for an intelligibility of norms.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Confronts the Death of the Author

Mayerchak, Justin Philip 01 April 2016 (has links)
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s literary style transforms from his first novel, "Player’s Piano" (1952), to his final book, "Timequake" (1997). Most of his novels adhere to a similar style – the narrators face a puzzling societal fault that is exaggerated in their dystopian societies, which hides Vonnegut’s humanistic leanings. This thesis, however, focuses on Vonnegut’s authorial identity, his use of the alter ego, and eventual entrance into the novel. His authorial role challenges the literary theory expressed in “The Death of the Author”(1967) by Roland Barthes and further discussed in “What is an Author”(1969) by Michel Foucault. Barthes explains an author metaphorically dies after his book is published and Foucault questions the author’s role and importance to his novel. Vonnegut juxtaposes fictional and nonfictional material whereby his character is paramount to his work. Therefore, Vonnegut challenges Barthes and Foucault’s notion that an author restricts his work; rather, Vonnegut’s identity empowers his novels.

Globalizing Governmentality: Sites of Neoliberal Assemblage in the Americas

Weidner, Jason R 03 June 2010 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes processes of globalization, through a critical examination of the dynamics of neoliberalism in the Americas. It employs and also develops a Foucauldian governmentality analytical framework, demonstrating how such a framework contributes to our understanding of world politics. This dissertation also develops the concept of a liberal political imaginary—consisting of the market, society, and the state—and utilizes this as an analytical framework for understanding the globalization of neoliberal forms of governance. The research suggests that discourses and practices of globalization, global civil society, and global governance represent a fundamental transformation in the way that contemporary social and political reality is understood, and that this has significant consequences for the kinds of political practices and relations that are possible. Moreover, the research suggests the globalization of a neoliberal form of competitive subjectivity that can be applied to a broad range of actors—from individuals to nation-states and international organizations—is reshaping contemporary world politics. The dissertation concludes by suggesting how Foucauldian IR can move forward by incorporating studies of contemporary transformations in capitalism into their analyses.

Andersson, Gustav Adolfo January 2019 (has links)
