The power of news media to shape public opinion has been widely researched and acknowledged. In the globalized world of today, media representations of different ethnic groups therefore contribute to social segregation or desegregation. This thesis investigates how Spanish news media frame Spain’s most numerous minority of non-European ethnicity: the Moroccans. Using a quantitative content analysis, we have analysed about 200 news articles in the two most read Spanish online newspapers, El País and El Mundo, published during a two-year period, 2010-2012. Our results show that the newspapers produce a negative image of the Moroccan minority, mainly by associating Moroccans with crime and violence, which, to a certain extent, also applies to other minority groups in Spain. This conclusion shows that today, prominent European newspapers mediate a discriminative image of Moroccans and other ethnic minorities, although more through a subtle negative associative pattern than through the use of depreciatory terms or words.

This bachelor's purpose is to examine different types of library work directed at theSwedish national Jewish and Romani minorities. The thesis will begin with accounting for thepolitics of Swedish national minorities and of today’s situation for Jews and Romanis in Sweden. We will, to accomplish this purpose, use a three-piece question formulation regarding therespective works of the libraries, as well as the possible benefits that cooperation betweendifferent libraries could bring. The questions are answered in the analysis of four qualitativeinterviews through a model based on Dorte Skot-Hansen's thoughts on the library's different rolesin different understandings of society. The analysis will lead us to a final discussion, in which wewill present our results: that distinct guidelines regarding the national minorities for the publiclibraries are a necessity for Sweden’s fulfilling of the responsibility towards these groups; thatthere is a need for a coordination of the propositions and conventions regarding the nationalminorities in the shape of a substantial legislation; and that this field in the future needs to bethoroughly observed and examined in order to evaluate how the Swedish public libraries meet the needs of the national minorities.

A disappearing indigenous language : a study concerning the role of the Swedish public libraries in revitalizing the South Sami languageBjörkman, Peter, Liljedahl, Helena January 2009 (has links)
The year 2000 the Sami languages were recognized as official minority languages in Sweden, which among other things mean that there is a government decision to provide the means for their further existence. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the role of the Swedish public libraries in revitalizing the South Sami language. This is an important topic to address, since the South Sami language faces serious threats today. Furthermore, the role of the public libraries in revitalizing the minority languages due to the Swedish engagement is not yet defined. The study focuses on Jämtlands läns bibliotek, a choice based on the fact that this library is located in a region with a large South Sami population. In the light of existing policy documents, and up-to-date research results dealing with the South Sami language situation, we made an interview study based on three distinct questions at issue. These deals with the responsibility of the library, the present work at the library, and the future work of the library. In answering these questions at issue, we made eight interviews with strategically selected persons; four librarians and four Samis. Since there is no established library praxis regarding the routines to revitalize threatened languages in Sweden, the purpose was to let the informants themselves contribute to the definition of the phenomenon’s at hand. Our conceptual frameworks were Kenneth Hyltenstam´s theories on language processes, Dorte Skot-Hansen´s & Marianne Andersen´s categorization of the different functions of the library, and Mikael Stigendal´s perspective on the librarian’s role in integration. Our results show that there is a gap between what the librarians perceived as immediate demand, and the real needs of the South Sami group; a gap which the library in the light of it´s educating commission has a responsibility to bridge. The results also show that the library´s work today concerning this matter is inadequate, and that the library receives a low level of trust from the Sami informants. However, the results also show a mutual interest in cooperation, in order to investigate possible and constructive ways forward. Crucial to successful results showed to be the integration of South Sami competence in the overall resources of the library, and to contribute to the normalization of the Sami presence in the region in other ways.

SO

Anjou, Charlotta January 2020 (has links)

This study highlights the experiences of minority individuals who have attended the Swedish primary and/or secondary school. The aim has been to describe their situated experiences with regards to intercultural sensitivity and solidarity. Previous research presents different findings that are related to the social and value-based aspect of schools. One study found that integration and respect among a diverse student group is achieved through intended strategies that seek to promote student interactions and collaborative inquiry across various types of boundaries. Another study found that children with minority backgrounds generally have poorer experiences of school climates. Through narrative interviewing, six women told stories of their school experiences. The stories were then analysed through Schütze’s methodology for narrative data analysis, explained by Jovchelovitch and Martin (2000). Theories of interculturality, transculturality and different conceptions of solidarity were used as frameworks for a thematic analysis. The results show that the majority of the interviewees experienced a general lack of intercultural sensitivity and solidarity in interaction with both peers and adults, and that their ethnic backgrounds made them targets for racial ostracism or prejudiced understanding. The interviewees also told stories of the individuals who made a difference in their lives because of the intercultural sensitivity and solidarity they had cultivated and the care they had for making the students feel respected as they are. This study shows that more awareness and understanding of intercultural sensitivity and solidarity in schools is needed and that the goals of inter- and transculturality are useful paradigms in multiple ways. One of them is that it can be used to create a deeper understanding of the unique ways that individuals interpret intercultural sensitivity and solidarity with regards to their intersectional experiences and perspectives in the world.

Uppdrag: Nationella minoriteter : Bibliotekarier på fyra folkbibliotek i södra Sverige berättar / Assignment: National minorities : Librarians at four public libraries in South of Sweden recount.Jansson, Josefin January 2021 (has links)
The study examines the recountings of the work of five librarians at four public libraries in smaller municipalities in southern Sweden with their assignment of national minorities. Reports have shown that there are shortcomings in many libraries with regard to the fulfillment of goals described in the Library Act’s writing about national minorities. The study aims to investigate what activities representatives of libraries recount they work with, how they reason about national minorities’ visibility in the library space and how they view the library’s minority policy role. The method used is semi-structured interviews. The material is analyzed thematically. The theory guiding the study is R. Audunson et. als theory of libraries as a meeting place and its ability to bridge gaps in society. In the librarians’ recountings it appears that they primarily work with libraries as being low intensive meeting places which includes collections, expositions and visibility in the library space. Some of them work with events that can be described as high intensive activities. The results of the study cautiously suggests that it may not be sufficient to solely serve as low intensive meeting places in same ways as before in order to break old traditions of not having prioritized national minorities in the past. The study contributes with descriptions of librairians’ experiences of and thoughts on the subject at a time when national minority policies are being raised and the results may provide insights on how additional incentives for public libraries can be designed.
