The aim of this study is to examine the formation and consolidation of the Pamiri people in Tajikistan. The research focuses on two topics. The first is to compare the primordialist and constructionist schools over the question of the features individuating ethnic groups. The formation of Pamiri ethnic identity during the Soviet rule was selected as a case study of this thesis. The second topic of this study is to examine the formation of Pamiri ethnic identity and the factors that contributed for its consolidation during the Soviet period. While the first topic is gathered around contemporary issues about ethnicity, the second one is based on the Soviet period with a focus on the policies about the nationality question.

A investigação orienta-se sob o prisma da História Cultural e é operacionalizada fundamentalmente com base nas fontes orais. Ao longo da sua trajetória, o grupo integrou-se ao cortejo cívico e passou a encenar o singular Auto A Roubada da Rainha. Através da participação de Os Guaranys nos festejos é possível perceber uma reconfiguração da tradição que remete à memória das batalhas de 1822-23 e ao Caboclo. A análise desse corpo coletivo promove a compreensão das condições de possibilidade para as permanências e transformações nos referencias identitários híbridos, em especial as que se reportam à figura do Caboclo. O objeto é parte de um fenômeno mais amplo de construção da nacionalidade brasileira em que se remeteu à pluralidade étnica elaborada enquanto mestiçagem. Em outro sentido, Os Guaranys desenvolveram-se no campo dos festejos e manipularam melhor os recursos disponíveis, o que permitiu sua permanência até a atualidade a despeito do desaparecimento de outros grupos. Este processo foi viabilizado pela sua institucionalização, no qual foram acionados referenciais cívicos, religiosos e étnicos que remetiam à figura do Caboclo. Isto deu ocasião a que o grupo assumisse a centralidade nas comemorações compreendidas entre os dias Seis e Nove de Janeiro de cada ano e forjassem um discurso da nacionalidade brasileira. This study investigates the performance of the popular group Os Guaranys in the festivities of the Independence of Itaparica in Brazil, between 1939 and 2003. The research is guided through the perspective of Cultural History and it is run essentially based on oral sources. Throughout its career, the group joined the civic parade and started out staging the unique outdoor popular theatrical performance A Roubada da Rainha. By the participation of Os Guaranys in the festivities it is possible to identify a reconfiguration of the tradition that refers to the memory of the battles of 1822-23 and to the Caboclo.The analysis of this collective body promotes the understanding of the conditions of possibility for permanence and change in the hybrid identity references, especially those that relate to the figure of Caboclo. The object of study is part of a broader phenomenon of construction of Brazilian nationality that refers to the elaborated ethnic plurality as miscegenation. In another way, Os Guaranys developed in the field of festivities and manipulated better the resources available, which allowed its permanence until today, despite the disappearance of other groups. This process was enabled by its institutionalization, in which civic, religious and ethnic references that referred to the figure of Caboclo were driven. It gave opportunity to the group take the centrality of the commemorations between Six and Nine on January every year and forge a discourse of Brazilian nationality.

Este trabalho analisa a construção literária da idéia de nacionalidade brasileira, sob a inspiração predominante da história das idéias. Esse objetivo será levado a efeito mediante o estudo de dois momentos históricos distintos, o século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX. O principal foco da análise é a obra de dois intelectuais que podem ser considerados como representativos de suas épocas, José de Alencar (1829-1877) e Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954). No universo da extensa produção intelectual desses escritores, este trabalho discute especialmente textos críticos e teóricos, o que não impede incursões tópicas em sua produção ficcional. / This work examines the literary construction of the idea of Brazilian nationality, under the predominant inspiration of history of ideas. This goal will be carried out through the study of two distinct historical moments, nineteenth century and the first decades of twentieth century. The main focus of analysis is the work of two intellectuals considered representative of their times, José de Alencar (1829-1877) and Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954). In the universe of the extensive intellectual production of these writers, this work discusses especially critical and theoretical texts, and that does not prejudice topical incursions into their fictional production.

During the decade of 1930 and the beginning of 1940 the advancement of industrial capitalism was translated in quite subtle ways of domination, where one could find even the control of the subjectivity, the character and the personality of the persons. Formulated by intellectuals, militaries and studious of this subject and assumed by the state from 1937 on, Physical Education admitted the status of a discipline that could be able to make Brazilian people prepared to follow the development of the country. It was granted to this discipline the hole of helping to construct a strong nation. It would be achieved with the investment on body, through the physical and moral regeneration of Brazilian people, making them strong, healthy, eugenicist, useful and productive. At the same time, it would be possible to insert inside the persons some values such as order, discipline, respect and obedience. The Army, which activated the Physical Education at that moment, tried to lead the national construction and it involved this practice in its goals of the society militarization. With the consolidation of the political authoritarianism since 1937, the state integrated the Physical Education and its regenerating act with the ideology of the national construction that was formulated, bringing to the project of nationality construction from this practice on, a new outline of a fascist orientation.(AU) / O presente estudo propõe analisar qual o papel exercido pela Educação Física na Era Vargas. Durante a década de 1930 e o início de 1940 o avanço do capitalismo industrial traduzia-se em formas bastante sutis de dominação, no qual, projetava-se o controle até mesmo da subjetividade, do caráter e da personalidade dos indivíduos. Formulada por intelectuais, militares e estudiosos do assunto e assumida pelo Estado a partir de 1937, a Educação Física assumiu o status de disciplina capaz de tornar o povo brasileiro preparado para acompanhar o desenvolvimento do país. Conferiu-se a essa disciplina o papel de auxiliar na construção de uma nação forte. Isto seria alcançado a partir do investimento sobre o corpo, pela regeneração física e moral do povo brasileiro, tornando-o forte, sadio, eugenizado, útil e produtivo. Ao mesmo tempo, seria possível introjetar nos indivíduos valores como ordem, disciplina, respeito e obediência. O Exército, grande ativador da Educação Física naquele momento, procurava liderar a construção nacional e envolvia essa prática em seus objetivos de militarização da sociedade. Cette recherche doctorale est consacrée à l'analyse des perceptions de la citoyenneté française chez les immigrés originaires de Turquie et leurs enfants en lien avec leurs parcours migratoires. S'appuyant sur les différentes appartenances identitaires de ces immigrés, elle propose une analyse de l'articulation des appartenances particulières et de l'appartenance citoyenne qui se produit pendant les parcours migratoires. Cette analyse révèle les modes de compositions identitaires qui se réalisent d'une manière variée par rapport à des appartenances culturelles et politiques dans le cas des immigrés originaires de Turquie et leurs enfants. Les perceptions de la citoyenneté des enquêtés sont affectées, à la fois pour les immigrés et leurs enfants, non seulement par le lien établi avec la France du point de vue juridique, économique, social, culturel et identitaire mais aussi avec leur pays et leur culture d'origine via les activités associatives. Ce qui nous montre que l'appartenance citoyenne dans le parcours migratoire doit être analysée comme un processus qui débute en Turquie et qui continue en France, provoquant parfois des ruptures identitaires. / This doctoral research tried to analyze the perceptions of French citizenship among immigrants from Turkey and their children in relation with their migratory paths. Based on the different identities belonging, it studies the articulation of particular belongings and the citizenship belonging during the migratory paths. In the example of immigrants originated from Turkey, this analysis reveals the patterns of identity compositions that are realized in different ways in relation with cultural and political affiliations. The immigrant's perceptions of the citizenship are affected, for both the immigrants and their children, not only by the legal, economic, social, cultural and identity link with France but also with their country of origin and their native culture through associative activities. So that, citizenship belonging in the migratory process must be taken as a process that is beginning in Turkey and continuing in France, and sometimes causes identity disruption.

Notre objet d‘étude s‘articule autour de la naturalisation des étrangers en France. Ainsi notre objectif dans cette recherche vise à expliciter et rendre intelligible le phénomène des acquisitions de la nationalité française au sein de l‘immigration algérienne. Notre analyse consiste à mettre en rapport l‘évolution des perception, motivations, stratégies et des désirs de ces « nouveaux » français , en même temps citoyens d‘un autre pays, avec leurs parcours, leurs situations socioprofessionnelles et leurs origine géographique. Cela soulève la question du renouvellement des modes d‘adaptation à la société d‘accueil. Ainsi le rapport à la société d‘accueil dépend de la place que prend la société d‘origine à la fois dans la vie quotidienne et dans les représentations des ces « anciens migrants ». La double nationalité d‘une manière générale se détermine par l‘ambivalence des rapports aux deux sociétés, d‘une part la société d‘origine à laquelle on reste rattaché, d‘autre part avec la société d‘accueille dans laquelle on a choisi de vivre. Ce qui marque cette double appartenance, habituellement, par certaines formes d‘ambigüité voir de suspicion. A partir de là, un questionnement sur la pertinence de la question des allégeances citoyennes chez ces « franco-algériens » s‘impose à nous. Basé sur un travail empirique, notre étude s‘alimente donc des questionnements sur le rapport entre multiplicité des allégeances ou/et appartenances et citoyenneté moderne. Nous cherchons ainsi à répondre à cette question en se centrant et problématisant la question de l‘allégeance à l‘état nation du pays d‘accueil et la confronter à la conception moderne de la citoyenneté qui a émergé dans les pays industrialisés ces dernières décennies. Dans cette perspective, ce croisement entre citoyenneté moderne et « multiplicité des allégeances », nous permet de mettre au jour quelques interrogations essentielles dans ce domaine de recherche comme la signification et la perception de la participation politique dans la société d‘accueil ainsi que la problématique de la pratique religieuse, l‘islam en l‘occurrence. / Our object of study is based on the naturalization of foreigners in France. Thus our goal in this research is to explain and make intelligible the phenomenon of acquisition of French nationality within the Algerian immigration. Our analysis is to relate changes in perceptions, motivations, strategies and desires of these "new" French, being also citizens of another country, with their backgrounds, their socio-professional status and their geographical origin. This raises the question of renewal of the modes of adaptation to the host society. Thus the relationship within the host society depends on the place the original society has in both daily life and in the representations of these "old migrants". Dual citizenship is generally determined by the ambivalent relationship between the two societies, first the original society to which we are attached, second with the host society in which we chose to live. This usually marks this dual identity by some forms of ambiguity and worse, suspicion. From there, questioning the relevance of the issue of civic allegiances in these "Franco-Algerian" is imposed on us. Based on empirical work, our study therefore fuels questions about the relationship between multiple allegiances and / or affiliations and modern citizenship. We are trying to answer this question by focusing and problematizing the question of allegiance to the nation state of the host country and confront it to the modern conception of citizenship that has emerged in recent decades within industrialized countries. In this perspective, this cross between modern citizenship and "multiple allegiances" allows us to reveal some essential questions in this research area as to the meaning and understanding of political participation in the host society and the issue of religious practice of Islam in this case.

Postgraduate international students as globalised lifelong learners : an exploratory study

This study provides a theoretical and methodological contribution to ongoing debates relating to the purpose and nature of international higher education. It does so by examining globalisation, lifelong learning and postgraduate international study through the voice of the individual student. The voice of the student is under represented in the literature and this research contributes by providing an in-depth, longitudinal study focusing on the student voice. The experiences of international postgraduate students within one English university from 2009-2014 provide the research context. Their experience is explored through a number of integrated and interactive narrative based research methods: written narratives, interview narratives and narratives as conversations in action. There is a dearth of empirical research which integrates these methods. It is not an intention of this study to make generalisation claims or to claim universal applicability. However, the findings do add to knowledge relating to internationalisation, globalisation, lifelong learning and identity construction within higher education programmes. The neoliberal economic view of motivation to become an international student is contested. This study suggests that motivation to take on a period of international study may be more complex and more heavily weighted towards passion, rather than towards an economic or employment based rationale. Participants do demonstrate many of the qualities identified for the international or globalised learner. However, international experience and international learning is largely brought about the agency of the international student, often in spite of, rather than as an outcome of their formal university programme of study. The study confirms that culture and identity are permeable and are influenced by the postgraduate student experience. However, nationality rather than being reduced is reinforced during the period of international study. The findings confirm that narrative research approaches such as those used in this research, can provide a rich learning experience for both participant and researcher. Such approaches may be of particular importance to individuals in transition stages, such as the international student.
