Secret city : creating a living urban landscape in Pretoria’s CBD

Visser, Dominique 05 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation explores the potential of new public landscapes developed in small scale lost, or latent spaces within the urban fabric of Pretoria, in order to change the CBD into a living city that encourages urban regeneration through tactical intervention. The urban voids of Pretoria will be mapped and a site developed using a series of tactical interventions. The exploration of current pop-up trends and guerilla urbanism as a vehicle for urban renewal provides the basis for the phasing process. Pop-up public spaces : Explore, experiment, expand / Temporära allmänna platser : utforska, undersök, utveckla

Modén, Erick January 2015 (has links)
The 21st century presents the urban environments with challenges in the form of demo- graphic changes, new urban economies and international and culturally diverse cities. These challenges exist within a globalized context that together with digital technology has created rapidly shifting environments. As a result there is a need for constant innovation in a constantly shifting environment. There is a need for temporary exploratory solutions in the built environment in order to highlight tendencies, visualize unseen conflicts and explore new urban forms in order for cities to grow with their residents and users. By analyzing current local regulation in Stockholm regarding public space, temporary structures, usage as well as social factors and an in-depth analysis of three case studies, this project explores and outlines how temporary user projects can act as a compliment to traditional planning practices. The project also explores the role and the limitations of urban entrepreneurship and examines a clear set of values for urban entrepreneurship within temporary spaces. The final synthesis is a framework that seeks to ensure equal access and achieving solutions that are flexible and local.

From Vacant to Vibrant (?) : Towards an Implementation of Tactical and Temporary Urbanism Initiatives in Nacka Municipality, Sweden / Från ledig till levande (?)

Magnusson, Thomas January 2015 (has links)
A trend of temporary interventions is sweeping through Western cities in the 21st century. Being anything from art on street benches or small pop-up stores to street festivals, food trucks or urban farms, these expressions have recently been given more attention by the academic world and city authorities. Such expressions are often clustered under umbrella concepts such as tactical urbanism, temporary urbanism, DIY urbanism, guerilla urbanism and pop-up urbanism. In this thesis the expressions and the way in which they are organized are called Tactical and Temporary Urbanism Initiatives (TTUI). In the Swedish municipality Nacka east of Stockholm, a small peninsula called Kvarnholmen has hosted actors with short-term commitments during the summer of 2014; a project called Under Konstruktion. Situated at the site were an art & exhibition center, a ‘magical’ garden, a food caravan, a night club and a festival. In parallel, Kvarnholmen is developing into a city district as part of a municipal aim to build almost 15000 new apartments over the next 15 years. The initiators of Under Konstruktion, Nacka municipality and the developer KUAB, have aimed to put Kvarnholmen “on the map” during the time of construction (among other intentions) and have brought in the above actors to realize this ambition. The thesis evaluates Under Konstruktion in order to answer the research question; what is the potential role and function of tactical and temporary urbanism initiatives within municipal planning and urban development processes in a Swedish context? Based on previous research and 11 interviews with project actors, it is discussed why TTUI should be implemented in municipal planning and what kind of knowledge and structures that are needed for an implementation to take place. Potential risks associated with TTUI implementation is also discussed. The evaluation shows that several ambitions have been achieved. The project was well-attended and a medial success but heavy workload and poor communication added stress and a negative touch. More involved actors and better anchoring within the municipal organization is suggested, and the cherry-picking of actors is questioned. Under Konstruktion has mainly been concerned with market strategic goals, which is not the main intention of TTUI and merely one piece of an urban development strategy. It is argued for that such a TTUI strategy in other locations in Nacka could possibly hasten gentrification processes. The thesis suggests broad TTUI implementation to recognize and adapt to global trends, basing the implementation on its advantages to rationalize land use, support creativity and diversify citizen participation processes. Such an approach have risks worth considering, for instance conflicts between actors, citizen ignorance or lack of bottom-up creativity. It would also be time-consuming, require resources and a questioning of municipal professions. Through the unique character of Under Konstruktion, Nacka has shown commitment to create vibrant districts, but not yet have TTUI become a significant part of its urban development strategy. With the current massive development in mind, implementing a short-term perspective cannot be hastened but step-by-step included to permeate the long-term strategic framework.

Language of the Book : Volume I–III Investigations of the conceptual and bodily experience of reading and making books / Bokens Språk

Bornedal, Kajsa January 2021 (has links)
The project Language of the Book Volume I-III explores the conceptual and the bodily experience of reading and making books. The essay presents the development of Volume I: Narracube consisting of three storytelling prototypes. With Narracube a format was developed that can invite stories to be told beyond single voices, linear time and fixed points of views. Narracube highlights the active role of a medium in transmission of a message. A book is never a neutral container for ink but an active space of communication in its mere contruction despite its content.

Multifaceted municipal pop-up planning : A case-study analysis of Vancouver, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden

Josephson, Britta, Ochitwa, Sarah January 2021 (has links)
This thesis is born out of a desire to better understand the intentions and implications behind a contemporary planning approach we term ‘pop-up planning’. This approach can be viewed as legitimized planning institutions borrowing aesthetic and practice from citizen-led, do-it-yourself urban initiatives which act to improve public space through often tactical or temporary means. There is a blurring of the intentionality behind pop-up planning approaches, as well as contention around the actual impacts pop-up planning approaches have. We relate the ambiguity of the intentions and impacts of pop-up planning approaches to both the diversity of terminology used by different local governments, and additionally, to the dominant economic imperative which favours exchange value over use value. Therefore, through a comparative critical analysis of pop-up planning in both Vancouver, Canada and Stockholm, Sweden, we seek to explore what implications pop-up planning has relating to democracy and social justice, and to uncover what impacts and intentionalities lay behind these approaches.

Brégeon Lalanne de Saint-Quentin, Virginie 08 June 2017 (has links)
The culinary is in everybody’s mouth without having been defined neither in marketing or in the field of consumer’s behavior. In order to limit this lack of concept, this thesis aims at exploring the ideas behind the culinary and to suggest a mix experiential design x « culinariness » for a consumer’s delightment. After the first exploration based on content analysis on the internet (NGram Viewer and Google) and semi-directive interviews that have revealed part of the concept, the research consisted in a polymorphic analysis of the dimensions and uses of the culinary. Built on a multiangulation of the research, the four empirical studies were : 1) case studies of quality restaurants ; 2) participating observation of a Mooc on food design ; 3) tests on the dimensions of the culinary at the restaurant ; 4) three experimentations as pop up restaurants enabling somes observations on spot and investigations. Thus, the results of this study lead to a definition of the culinary (Pleasure as a determinant and 4 dimensions QCKS: Q-Quality ; C-Creativty ; K-Know-how ; S-Sharing). They attest the point of an experiential design x culinary mix in order to delight the consumer and introduce a culinary marketing.

Achieving Complex Motion with Fundamental Components for Lamina Emergent Mechanisms

Winder, Brian Geoffrey 01 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Designing mechanical products in a competitive environment can present unique challenges, and designers constantly search for innovative ways to increase efficiency. One way to save space and reduce cost is to use ortho-planar compliant mechanisms which can be made from sheets of material, or lamina emergent mechanisms (LEMs). This thesis presents principles which can be used for designing LEMs. Pop-up paper mechanisms use topologies similar to LEMs, so it is advantageous to study their kinematics. This thesis outlines the use of planar and spherical kinematics to model commonly used pop-up paper mechanisms. A survey of common joint types is given, as well as an overview of common monolithic and layered mechanisms. In addition, it is shown that more complex mechanisms may be created by combining simple mechanisms in various ways. The principles presented are applied to the creation of new pop-up joints and mechanisms, which also may be used for lamina emergent mechanisms. Models of the paper mechanisms presented in Chapter 2 of the thesis are found in the appendix, and the reader is encouraged to print, cut out and assemble them. One challenge associated with spherical and spatial LEM design is creating joints with the desired motion characteristics, especially where complex spatial mechanism topologies are required. Hence, in addition to a study of paper mechanisms, some important considerations for designing joints for LEMs are presented. A technique commonly used in robotics, using serial chains of revolute and prismatic joints to approximate the motion of complex joints, is presented for use in LEMs. Important considerations such as linkage configuration and mechanism prototyping are also discussed. Another challenge in designing LEMs is creating multi-stable mechanisms with the ability to have coplanar links. A method is presented for offsetting the joint axes of a spatial compliant mechanism to introduce multi-stability. A new bistable spatial compliant linkage that uses that technique is introduced. In the interest of facilitating LEM design, the final chapter of this thesis presents a preliminary design method. While similar to traditional methods, this method includes considerations for translating the mechanism topology into a suitable configuration for use with planar layers of material.
